The Fujifilm 200mm F2 shoots planes, cranes and hydroplanes

As autumn rolls in in the northern hemisphere I always find myself wishing that summer would stick around just a little bit longer. So, in the spirit of summer, I’m going to take you for a voyage in the wayback machine all the way to August, when the sun was bright and the temperatures warm.

One of the highlights of the warm(ish) season here in Seattle is Seafair, a summer-long festival that culminates with an airshow featuring the US Navy’s Blue Angels and hydroplane races on Lake Washington. Not familiar with hydroplanes? Imagine strapping a turbine engine from a helicopter onto the back of a boat and racing it around an oval loop at up to 320 kph (200 mph). Wild stuff.

It’s a fun event to photograph, but a challenging one as well; your subjects are typically far away and moving very fast. I had been looking for an opportunity to use Fujifilm’s 200mm F2 telephoto and Seafair seemed like just the right event. I paired the lens with a X-T3 body and headed out for two days to shoot in the hot summer sun.

Fujifilm isn’t the first brand I think of when it comes to shooting fast action, but I was dying to try the lens and Fujifilm’s AF system has been getting really good on recent models, so I decided to give it a go. TL;DR – I wasn’t disappointed.

I spent my first day at Seattle’s Boeing Field where the Blue Angels are based during the airshow. I had planned to shoot planes in flight (hmmm… maybe not the best way to phrase that), but I was pleasantly surprised at all the shooting opportunities on the ground. The 200mm F2 came through for me big time here.

Photos of the Blue Angels in flight abound, but the 200mm F2 also allowed me to focus on the ground crews to show the people who make these airshows possible.

With a bit of creative positioning I was able to shoot above, around and, in a few cases, straight through the crowd to get some close photos of the planes, pilots and ground crews before takeoff and after landing. I love these types of photos because they add a human element to the story that’s often missing from Blue Angels photos.

Image quality was outstanding. In my opinion, this lens performs as well as any similarly specced optic I’ve tried (comparable to a 300mm F3.0 on full frame). Images were consistently sharp with excellent contrast and looked great straight out of the camera.

The following day I headed out to Lake Washington to shoot the hydros. I quickly discovered what experienced hydroplane photographers already know: the hydros are a lot farther from shore than you think and the lens didn’t provide enough reach to get a tight shot on the boats. Fortunately, I had the lens’s companion 1.4x teleconverter which quickly transformed it into a 280mm F2.8 (420mm equivalent) to get a bit closer to the action.

Hydroplanes skim across the water at speeds in excess of 300 kph. Even with the Fujifilm 1.4x teleconverter attached the boats were a bit far away for a tight frame.

I was impressed with shots using the teleconverter as well, though you do give up a bit of absolute sharpness when it’s used. However, unless you’re pixel peeping or printing very large the difference won’t be apparent to most viewers. It’s also worth noting that I was shooting distant objects on a very hot day, so heat haze likely had some impact on absolute sharpness in these images. Overall, I really enjoyed shooting with the teleconverter attached and didn’t notice any compromises in performance other than a slight loss in sharpness.

And the X-T3? It exceeded my expectations. I mostly used zone focus and the AF was fast and precise. Did it miss some shots here or there? Definitely. But no more than I’d expect from any other camera this side of a Nikon D5 or Canon EOS-1D X Mark II.

I have to give props to Fujifilm for one other thing as well. I almost always make adjustments to Raw files, but I didn’t need to make adjustments to any of the photos I shot over the course of two days. The entire sample gallery was created by opening Raw images in Lightroom and immediately exporting them as Jpeg images using Fujifilm’s Astia film profile, which did the best job of rendering the blue color of the planes. Fujifilm just gets this part right, and it’s one of the reasons I keep getting drawn to Fujifilm cameras.

My verdict on the lens? Fantastic. I just need an excuse to go use it again.

Meet the Insta360 EVO, a foldable camera that shoots 3D 180º video and 360º 5.7K video

Insta360 has launched EVO, a cube-style camera that shoots 360-degree and stereoscopic 3D 180-degree video footage and stills thanks to its unique folding design.

The camera features the same 5.7K video resolution and 18-megapixel still resolution as the Insta360 One X, as well as Insta360’s six-axis FlowState stabilization technology. In fact, the camera as a whole has similar specs to the One X as a whole, including F2.2 apertures on both lenses, various exposure modes in video and stills, Bluetooth 4.0, 5Ghz Wi-Fi and a microSD card slot with a maximum storage of 128GB.

But the internal specs are where the similarities end. Unlike the One X, the EVO doesn’t have any integrated LCD display. Instead, the camera features a hinged design that enables the cameras to capture a full 360-degree image when the lenses are facing opposite directions or stereoscopic 3D 180-degree images when the EVO is folded out with the lenses facing the same direction.

The camera itself has only a few buttons and ports on it, including a power button and a button for switching between various shooting modes and settings. On the side of the camera is the microSD card slot and a micro USB slot (unusual Insta360 didn’t opt for a USB Type-C port instead).

Since the EVO doesn’t have a screen of its own, the camera is dependent on an Insta360 EVO app to compose the images, change the settings and overall control the camera with more finesse than the limited on-device controls. The app will be available in the iOS App Store and Google Play Store.

The EVO is currently available for order on Insta360’s website and B&H for $ 419.99.

Insta360 has also announced Insta360 VR, a new app for Oculus Go, HTC Vive Focus and Samsung Gear VR that will allow users to connect an EVO camera to a headset for simple wireless playback of the stereoscopic 3D 180-degree video or 360-degree video.

For phones that don’t have stereoscopic playback capabilities, Insta360 has also announced Holoframe, a specialized phone display cover that will enable standard smartphones to view photos and videos in 3D with the naked eye. In its press release, Insta360 says ‘It’s simple, mind-blowing and feels like magic.’

The HoloFrame is available for iPhone X/Xs, iPhone X Max and iPhone XR for $ 29.99 from Insta360’s online shop.

DJI announces the Osmo Pocket, ‘the world’s smallest 3-axis gimbal’ that shoots 4K60p video

DJI has announced the DJI Osmo Pocket, the world’s smallest three-axis stabilized camera system.

The Osmo Pocket features a 1/2.3″ sensor that captures 12-megapixel photographs and 4K60p video at 100Mbps. It also captures slow-motion footage at 120 fps when shooting 1080p. Audio is recorded with two buiilt-in microphones (one on the bottom of the camera and one on the rear of the camera) that feature noise-cancelling technology for reducing unwanted background noise.

To compose shots, review media, navigate the menu, and select the various shooting modes DJI included a 1″ integrated touchscreen onboard the Osmo Pocket. The integrated shooting modes include ActiveTrack, which tracks a subject within the frame; FaceTrack, a more advanced version of ActiveTrack that will follow a particularly persons face when visible; Timelapse & Motionlapse, modes that speed up time and integrate motion into timelapse videos; FPV Mode, a locked shooting mode that follows the movement of the users hand while keeping the footage steady; and Panorama modes, which enables the capture of multiple images for stitching together in post-production.

For times when the onboard screen isn’t enough — and to unlock a slew of other features — users can also attach a mobile device using the onboard USB Type-C port. Using the included adapters, Android and iOS mobile devices can be connected to the DJI Osmo and operated with the dedicated DJI Mimo app. In addition to live-view and image review, DJI Mimo also adds Story Mode and Pro mode.

Story Mode simplifies the entire video creation process by offering ten templates that automatically control the camera movement and include music, transitions and color grading presets in post-production. After shooting is finished, the DJI Mimo app constructs an entire video that’s ready to share.

Pro Mode, which is available on numerous other DJI products, gives complete control of almost every camera setting imaginable. As its name suggest, it’s oriented more towards professionals, but when auto modes just aren’t enough, Pro Mode is there to fill in the gaps.

The DJI Osmo Pocket battery life is rated for two hours when shooting 4K30p video. The battery is built-in, so there’s no swapping out batteries on the fly, but it’s possible to charge on-the-go with an external battery pack.

DJI has also announced a range of nine accessories for the Osmo Pocket to expand creative possibilities, including an accessory mount, wireless module, controller wheel, expansion kit, ND filter set, waterproof case, extension rod, charging case, and a 3.5mm adapter.

The DJI Osmo Pocket retails for $ 349 and is available for pre-order at DJI.com and through other DJI Authorized Retailers, including B&H.

SiOnyx Aurora camera shoots color video even by moonlight

US-based night vision tech company SiOnyx has introduced an action cam that it claims can shoot color footage and stills in the dark as well as in normal daylight conditions. The Aurora uses infrared technology and a specially developed sensor with large pixels to shoot in conditions as dim as 0.001lux.

SiOnxy says the camera’s performance compares to night vision optics that cost ‘tens of thousands of dollars’ and that this is the first time such night-vision capabilities have been available to the consumer.

The Aurora uses a 1in sensor with 0.9 million large pixels that are created using what the company describes as a proprietary laser process. The process creates ‘the ultimate light-trapping pixels’ that have increased quantum efficiency and so avoid excessive noise and restricted dynamic range while producing images 10x brighter than a standard CMOS sensor. The sensor design is based on military-grade IR sensors that the company usually makes only for the defence market.

The Aurora can produce viewable images even in what would appear to the human eye to be darkness

The pixels have extended sensitivity to light between 850 and 940nm in the near-infrared area of the spectrum, and a maximum ANSI of 820,000 – and so can produce viewable images even in what would appear to the human eye to be darkness. The camera can also shoot still images (albeit it obviously at a very low resolution), as well as timelapse sequences and 720p video.

The camera is also fitted with GPS, an accelerometer and a compass for adventurers, and can be used underwater for 30 minutes to a depth of 3ft.

The HumanEyes Vuze XR shoots both 360° and 180° (3D) video

HumanEyes Technology has announced the Vuze XR camera, a product the company describes as a ‘dual camera’ since it can be used for two distinctly different applications.

The Vuze XR captures standard 360° spherical video in 5.7K resolution. Like the Rylo Camera or the GoPro Fusion, it appears to provide editing tools that will allow users to create 16:9 videos from the 360° footage or zoom out to a ‘tiny planet’ view, allowing for a lot of creative choices to be made after video is recorded.

By flipping both of its cameras outward, the Vuze XR transforms into a camera that captures 180° stereoscopic video similar to the Lucid VR or Yi Horizon VR180 camera, providing an immersive 3D experience to viewers when used with VR goggles.

While the Vuze XR doesn’t appear to break significant ground in either area, it presents an interesting option for 360°/VR content creators. Instead of having to purchase and carry two separate cameras, each of which may require different software and workflows, the Vuze XR promises to wrap both capabilities into a single camera.

Additionally, the camera will support live streaming to social media, which may make it an attractive choice for activities such as travel where you want to keep things light but retain the flexibility to share your adventure in different ways.

HumanEyes did not provide a specific release date, but says the Vuze XR will be available in the coming months at a price in the ‘$ 400 range’.

If the 24-2000mm equivalent lens on the Nikon Coolpix P900 wasn’t enough for you, then we bring good news: Nikon has announced its Coolpix P1000, which brings the telephoto end up to a once unthinkable 3000mm equiv. The lens has a maximum aperture of F2.8-8, compared to F2.8-6.5 on the P900, and has both ED and Super ED elements. This monster of a lens accepts 77mm filters and has two zoom speeds.

If you use Nikon’s ‘Dynamic Fine Zoom’ feature, the equivalent focal length rises to 6000mm (with some loss in image quality). Still not enough? If, for some reason, you need 12000mm of reach and don’t mind a substantial loss in image quality, you can use the camera’s 4X digital zoom. If you’re wondering just how large this camera is, it’s roughly 360mm / 14″ long with the lens extended and weighs in at a whopping 1.4kg / 3.1lbs.

As with its predecessor, the P1000 has a 16MP, 1/2.3″ sensor that offers an ISO range of 100-6400, along with Raw support, which wasn’t found on the P900 and represents a welcome addition. It can shoot continuously at 7 fps, but only for 7 shots. In a nod to its potential use cases, the P1000 has dedicated moon and bird positions on the mode dial. Photos and movies can be compared on a fully articulating LCD (which is not touch-enabled) or an 2.36M-dot OLED viewfinder.

The P1000 can also capture 4K/UHD video at 30p or 25p as well as 1080p from 60 fps down to 25 fps. The camera has a external mic input and offers manual exposure controls and clean HDMI output.

Wireless features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and the camera can be controlled via your smartphone, the new ML-L7 Bluetooth remote or the MC-DC2 wired shutter release. Battery life is rated at 250 shots per charge.

The Nikon Coolpix P1000 will be available in September for $ 999.

Parrot launches Anafi, a foldable 4K drone that shoots HDR video

Parrot, a French drone company known for its Bebop drones, has unveiled its latest consumer drone, the Anafi. Both on paper and in photos, this consumer-centric drone appears to be a direct competitor to DJI’s Mavic Air.

Its fold-out design is almost identical to the Mavic Air. It weighs just 0.7 pounds (320 grams) and folds up nice for slim packing in your bag. At the core of the drone is a 21-megapixel camera on a 180-degree tilt gimbal that shoots 4K HDR video at 30 fps or 1080p HDR video at 60 fps. For image stabilization, the Anafi features two-axis optical stabilization, while software compensates for the third axis.

The battery life of the Anafi is rated for 25 minutes, which seems par for course in the compact drone market. For comparison, the Mavic Air is also rated for a 25-minute fly time. Additional batteries, which are charged via USB-C, can be purchased for $ 99. The compact drone features a 2.5 mile range and has a top speed of 32 mph.

The Anafi comes with a physical controller alongside an all-new smartphone application to control the drone—FreeFlight 6. The updated app includes a slew of new shooting modes, including AI-based tracking, selfie capture, slow-mo capture, hyperlapse video and automated video modes for capturing landscapes. One downfall is your smartphone will need to be tethered via USB-A cable to the controller—apparently it’s needed to stream the full-quality video to your device.

The Anafi will retail for $ 699 and will be available starting on July 1st, although you can pre-order one now to secure your spot.. $ 700 is still a lot for a consumer drone, but compared to the $ 800 Mavic Air, it’s a slightly better value, if you don’t mind a few inconveniences.

Canon shows off full-frame sensor that shoots 100fps Full HD in ‘exceptionally low-light’

At CES 2018, Canon unveiled three specialized CMOS sensors: an ultra-high resolution 120MP APS-H sensor, a 5MP Global Shutter sensor, and a 19?m Full HD sensor capable of shooting 100fps Full HD in extremely low light. Each does something special—offering high resolution, global shutter, and high-sensitivity, respectively—and now, a few months later, Canon is showing off these sensors in a series of demo videos.

The first video featured the 120MXS sensor, which can shoot a mind-boggling 9.4fps at 120MP resolution. Now Canon USA has released the second video in the series, demoing its full-frame 19?m Full HD sensor made for shooting slow motion in extremely low light:

The sensor is called the 35MMFHDXS, and in many ways it’s the polar opposite of the 120MXS. It only contains 2.2 effective megapixels, but each of those pixels is a whopping 19?m x 19?m in size, allowing them to capture a lot of light. This, combined with new pixel and readout circuitry that helps reduce noise, is what allows this full-frame sensor to capture Full HD at 100fps even when shooting in very little light.

The 35MMFHDXS CMOS sensor delivers high-sensitivity, low-noise imaging performance, enabling the capture of Full HD video even in exceptionally low-light environments. The sensor’s pixels and readout circuitry employ new technologies that reduce noise, which tends to increase as pixel size increases. High sensitivity and increased well depth have been achieved through a larger pixel size of 19?m x 19?m (square) with proprietary device design technologies. The 35MMFHDXS CMOS sensor is available in RGB, RGB+IR or Monochrome.

As with the 120MXS, we probably won’t see this 35MMFHDXS sensor in standard, consumer-facing Canon cameras anytime soon; however, the technology Canon is developing to create these “advanced CMOS sensors with state-of-the-art technologies” will no doubt trickle down into the sensors the company will use in its DSLR and mirrorless cameras of tomorrow.

Pentax K-1 Mark II shoots up to ISO 819,200, offers updated Pixel Shift

Almost exactly two years after its predecessor’s introduction, Ricoh is debuting the Pentax K-1 Mark II. It’s the company’s latest full-frame DSLR and uses the same AA-filterless 36.4MP sensor used by the Mark I, but adds a new ‘accelerator’ to the imaging pipeline. This addition makes it possible to shoot at up to ISO 819,200, according to Ricoh. The company also says updated image processing parameters offer better color reproduction, especially blues and greens.

The K-1 II’s Pixel Shift Resolution System II adds the ability to use this high-res mode without a tripod by measuring the movements that come from hand shake, then capturing and combining four frames into one high-resolution image. The company calls this feature Dynamic Pixel Shift Resolution mode.

The camera’s hardware specs are otherwise unchanged from the K-1: it still offers a sturdy, weather-resistant construction and a flexible, articulated 3.2″ 1.04 million dot LCD complemented by a nearly 100% optical viewfinder (0.7x magnification). It continues to offer 33 AF points (25 cross-type), with an updated tracking algorithm that claims to improve accuracy while photographing moving subjects in AF-C mode. In-body 5-axis image stabilization is included, claiming up to 5 stops of correction.

Burst shooting tops out at 4.4 fps (up to 17 Raw images or 70 JPEGs) in regular shooting, or 6.4 fps in APS-C crop mode. The camera’s maximum video resolution of 1080/30p is starting to look a bit dated, though it does offer a 4K resolution interval mode that turns a series of stills into a time-lapse video. Headphone and microphone ports are offered, with a new wind-reduction audio recording option.

The Pentax K-1 Mark II will go on sale in April for $ 1999.95 body-only, or bundled with the HD Pentax-D FA 28-105mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR zoom for $ 2399.95.

Ricoh announces the PENTAX K-1 Mark II full-frame digital SLR camera

Flagship model in the PENTAX K series camera line updated to deliver even higher image quality and enhanced performance in challenging shooting conditions

WEST CALDWELL, NJ, February 21, 2018?Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation today announced the PENTAX K-1 Mark II 35mm full-frame digital SLR (DSLR) camera. Developed as the successor to the PENTAX K-1 full-frame DSLR camera launched in April 2016, the compact, rugged and weather-resistant PENTAX K-1 Mark II now becomes the flagship camera in the acclaimed PENTAX K-series lineup. The camera incorporates new technologies that allow it to deliver outstanding image quality and improved operability in a broader range of shooting conditions.

The PENTAX K-1 Mark II uses the same full-frame Anti-aliasing (AA)-filterless CMOS sensor with 36.4 effective megapixels as its predecessor model. However, Ricoh has added a new accelerator unit to the PENTAX K-1 Mark II that—along with the camera’s PRIME IV image processor—enables it to produce high-resolution images with minimal noise in even in the most challenging low-light conditions, up to ISO 819200. This makes the new camera ideal for low-light photography where higher shutter speeds are required.

The camera also incorporates Pixel Shift Resolution System II. This new, PENTAX-developed technology uses the same in-camera shake-reduction (SR) mechanism and sensor-shift capabilities as the original Pixel Shift Resolution System found in the PENTAX K-1, which captures four images of the same scene, and then synthesizes them into a single, super-high-resolution composite image. With the Pixel Shift Resolution System II, the camera also obtains RGB color data, resulting in images with significantly finer details and truer colors than those produced by typical full-frame sensors.

A new feature in the Pixel Shift Resolution System II is Dynamic Pixel Shift Resolution mode. This mode allows photographers to produce crisp, ultra-high pixel shift resolution images without the need of a tripod, extending the camera’s use to a wider variety of subjects and scenes.

The PENTAX K-1 Mark II also comes equipped with many unique features and functions designed to facilitate creativity and ensure operational comfort that have become the hallmark of PENTAX cameras. The PENTAX K-1 Mark II features a 35mm-format full-frame CMOS image sensor with an AA (anti-aliasing) filter–free design to produce high-resolution images with approximately 36.4 effective megapixels. It also features a new accelerator unit, which optimizes the image data obtained by the full-frame image sensor before delivering it to the high-performance PRIME IV imaging engine. This technology comes from the reverse thinking of pixel shift technology to utilize the minute camera shake itself to product the composite images. Therefore, by detecting the camera shake in three dimensions, the continuously captured four images are analyzed based on the detected camera shake information and combined into a single file to produce one super high resolution image.

3. High-performance five-axis, five-step SR II system

(1) In-body SR mechanism delivers optimal shake-reduction performance with all compatible lenses The PENTAX K-1 Mark II comes equipped with the PENTAX-developed SR II (Shake Reduction II) five-axis mechanism, which provides accurate control of the large full-frame image sensor with all compatible PENTAX interchangeable lenses.* In addition to camera shake caused by pitch and yaw, this advanced system also compensates for camera shake caused by horizontal and vertical shift (often generated in macro photography) and camera shake caused by roll, which is difficult for lens-installed shake-reduction mechanisms to handle. It has a compensation range up to five steps (measured in conformity with CIPA standards, using the HD PENTAX-D FA 28-105mm F3.5-5, 6ED DC WR at a 105mm focal length). When taking a panning shot, this system automatically detects the direction of the camera’s movement, and efficiently controls the SR unit to produce the best image possible without requiring any mode switching operation.

(2) Innovative AA filter simulator to minimize moiré and inaccurate color rendition By applying microscopic vibrations to the image sensor unit at the sub-pixel level during image exposure, the camera’s anti-aliasing (AA) filter simulator** provides the same level of moiré reduction as an optical AA filter. Unlike an optical filter, which always creates the identical result, this innovative simulator not only lets the user switch the AA filter effect on and off, but also adjust the level of the effect. This means that the ideal effect can be set for a particular scene or subject based on given photographic conditions.

(3) Additional shooting functions enabled by the SR II system Since the camera’s SR unit has a flexible design that tilts the image sensor unit in all directions, additional shooting functions are enabled, including auto level compensation, image-composition fine-adjustment, and Astro Tracer, a feature that works along with the built-in GPS, to produce super-sharp images of the night sky.

* Lenses compatible with this mechanism: K-, KA-, KAF-, KAF2-, KAF3- and K AF4-mount lenses; screw-mount lenses (with an adapter); and 645- and 67-system lenses (with an adapter). Some functions may not be available with certain lenses.
** This function works most effectively with a shutter speed of 1/1000 second or slower. This function may not be combined with some shooting modes, including the Pixel Shift Resolution system.

4. Flexible, tilting LCD monitor facilitates shooting in the dark On its back panel, the PENTAX K-1 Mark II features a flexible, tilting LCD monitor, which can be adjusted to the desired angle horizontally, vertically or diagonally with a single adjustment, without deviating from the lens’s optical axis. The user can not only tilt it approximately 35 degrees horizontally and approximately 44 degrees vertically, but also pull it out from its base to view the on-screen image from above for waist-level photography. This large, 3.2-inch LCD monitor has approximately 1,037,000 dots and a 3:2 aspect ratio, and provides a protective tempered-glass front panel for added durability. In addition to its wide-view design, it also features a unique air-gapless construction, in which the air space between LCD layers is eliminated to effectively reduce the reflection and dispersion of light for improved visibility during outdoor shooting. Its outdoor monitor function, which allows instant adjustment of the monitor’s brightness to the desired level, has also been improved to provide greater visibility in dark locations. Its red-lit monitor display function facilitates monitor viewing when the photographer’s eyes have become accustomed to a dark location during nighttime photography.

5. SAFOX 12 with 33 sensor points and full-frame-proportioned AF frame Using a SAFOX 12 AF sensor module with 33 AF sensors (25 cross-type sensors positioned in the middle), the PENTAX K-1 Mark II optimizes the autofocus process, and assures high-speed autofocus operation in the AF.S (AF Single) mode. The center sensor and two sensors located just above and below it are designed to detect the light flux of an F2.8 lens, making it easy to obtain pinpoint focus on a subject when using a large-aperture lens. Its AF Tracking algorithm has also been revised to improve tracking accuracy of fast-moving subjects in the AF.C (AF Continuous) mode.

6. PENTAX Real-Time Scene-Analysis System, developed using artificial intelligence technology By combining an approximately 86,000-pixel RGB metering sensor with the high-performance PRIME IV imaging engine, the PENTAX K-1 Mark II’s advanced PENTAX Real-Time Scene Analysis System performs real-time analysis of the brightness distribution over the image field and the subject’s colors and movement. Based on this data, it then measures the subject’s lighting conditions with great accuracy and optimizes the exposure. By adopting a breakthrough artificial intelligence technology, deep learning, to its algorithm,* it assesses each individual scene more accurately, and optimizes the exposure settings for a given scene or composition.

* Effective when the AUTO exposure mode is set to Scene Analyze Auto and the Custom Image mode is set to Auto Select.

7. Easy-to-focus optical viewfinder with nearly 100-percent field of view Optimized for a 35mm full-frame digital SLR design, the camera’s optical viewfinder provides a nearly 100-percent field of view and an approximately 0.7-times magnification. Using a combination of a condenser lens and aspherical lens, it provides a wide field of view and a clear, undistorted image of the subject. It comes with a Natural Bright Matt III focusing screen, acclaimed for ease of focusing during manual-focus operation, and true-to-life rendition of defocused areas in the viewfinder image. In addition, its transparent viewfinder display makes it possible to superimpose a wide range of photographic data over the viewfinder image.

8. High-speed continuous shooting The PENTAX K-1 Mark II allows continuous recording of as many as 17 images in the RAW format (or a maximum of 70 images in the JPEG Best format) in a single sequence, at a top speed of approximately 4.4 images per second. This is made possible by the combination of advanced mechanisms including a damper mechanism that effectively minimizes mirror shock; high-speed, high-precision control of the shutter and mirror units; and a high-speed data transmission system incorporated in the PRIME IV imaging engine. In the APS-C Crop mode, the drive speed can be boosted to as high as approximately 6.4 images per second, and as many as 50 images in a single sequence in the RAW format (or 100 images in the JPEG Best format) to assure quick response to fast-moving subjects.

9. Supportive shooting functions to improve picture-taking efficiency and operational comfort

  • Operation-assist light function, which sets LED lights at four different spots around the camera body — above the lens mount, behind the LCD monitor, at the memory car slot, and at the cable switch terminal — to facilitate lens and memory card changes, attachment and removal of the cable switch, and control button operation at night and in poorly lit settings.
  • Key lock function, which prevents erroneous operation of the four-way controller and other exposure-related control buttons.
  • Smart Function, which allows the user to swiftly choose and set desired functions using just the function dial and the set dial on the camera’s upper panel, without referring to the menu screen on the LCD monitor.
  • Control panel customize function, which allows the user to change a listing and/or position of the on-screen menu.

10. Compact, rugged body with dustproof, weather-resistant construction The camera’s bottom panel and front and back frames are all made of sturdy yet lightweight magnesium alloy. Although the camera features a dependable, durable shutter unit that can withstand 300,000 shutter releases (measured under actual shooting conditions) for professional use, its body has been downsized to the minimum possible, thanks to the incorporation of a unique floating mirror structure. With the inclusion of 87 sealing parts in the body, the camera also boasts a dustproof, weather-resistant and cold-resistant construction, assuring solid operation at temperatures as low as -10°C. All these features make the PENTAX K-1 Mark II a dependable, all-purpose performer, even under demanding shooting conditions.

11. Full HD movie recording with an array of creative tools The PENTAX K-1 Mark II captures Full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels; 60i/30p frame rate) in the H.264 recording format, and comes equipped with a stereo mic terminal for external microphone connection, and a headphone terminal. The user can also adjust the audio recording level manually, monitor sound pressure levels during microphone recording, and cut down wind noise using a new wind-noise reduction mode. In addition to a host of distinctive visual effects for movie recording,* the camera also provides the interval movie mode, which captures a series of 4K-resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) movie clips at a fixed interval.

* When special image processing is required, the frame rate may vary depending on the selected special-effect mode.

12. Built-in GPS module The PENTAX K-1 Mark II provides a variety of advanced GPS functions, including the recording of location, latitude, longitude, altitude and UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) and direction at the time of shooting. The user can easily access images containing GPS data using a computer, to browse them, check on shooting locations and position data on the screen, or save them. The camera also provides a set of other unique tools, including: Electronic Compass, which displays the camera’s direction on its LCD monitor; GPS log, which keeps track of the photographer’s movement; and Astro Tracer, which simplifies the tracing and photographing of celestial bodies by coupling GPS data with the camera’s SR mechanism.

Yuneec’s new Typhoon H Plus drone boasts a 1-inch sensor camera that shoots 4K 60p

Hong Kong drone manufacturer Yuneec has announced three new drones at CES, including an update to the popular Typhoon H that boasts a bigger sensor with more resolution and the ability to shoot 4K at 60fps.

The company is also preparing to move into the fixed-wing category with its Firebird FPV, and take on the racing drone sector with the compact HD Racer.

Yuneec Typhoon H Plus

The Typhon H Plus now uses a 1-inch, 20MP sensor along with a wide aperture lens that results in better low light performance. The company doesn’t specify what the aperture is, but it does say that the lens has a focal length equivalent to that of a 23mm lens on a full frame body. The ISO range runs from 100 to 6400, and shutter speeds of between 4-1/8000sec are possible.

The drone has a flight time of up to 25 minutes and can reach speeds of 13.5 meters per second (just over 30 miles per hour). With six large rotors the hexcopter provides stable flight in winds of up to 30mph, while a new design sees the machine producing 40% less noise.

Yuneec Firebird FPV

For a completely different experience, the fixed-wing Firebird FPV, “enables the user to fly just as if they were in the cockpit of a real airplane.”

The airplane has a 13MP-sensor camera and can also shoot 4K video. It uses a ‘short-latency’ digital video link to stream footage back to Earth in high-definition. The craft is simple to fly and, according to Yuneec, can remain in the air for up to 30 minutes on a single charge.

Yuneec HD Racer

The HD Racer is designed to be a fun, portable quadcopter for use in indoor racing. It has a 13MP camera that can record 1080p video at 60fps, and it has a handy flip-over feature that allows the user to right the craft remotely should it land upside down at any stage.


The Typhon H Plus and Firebird FPV will ship in the first half of 2018 and will cost $ 1,800 and $ 700, respectively. The HD Racer will come out later in the year, and should cost $ 180. For more information on any of these drones, visit the Yuneec website.
