The Sony ZV-E10 will ship on August 24th

Next week, Sony will release its distinctive new vlogging camera, the ZV-E10, which features a compact build, APS-C image quality, and interchangeable lenses.

Sony’s new camera is “designed from the ground up for vlogging and vloggers,” and aims to provide content creators with a blend of beginner-friendliness, top-notch video, and compactness for a uniquely effective shooting experience. 

While Sony already offers a vlogging camera, the ZV-1, the ZV-E10 aims to keep the best of the former model while improving upon it in a number of ways. Most notably, the ZV-1 is a fixed-lens camera, while the ZV-E10 is compatible with Sony’s range of E-mount glass. The ZV-E10 also outperforms the ZV-1 in terms of image quality, thanks to its powerful APS-C, 24 MP sensor.

And when it comes to video, the ZV-E10 brings the goods. You get 4K/24p shooting with no crop and no pixel binning (4K/30p with a crop factor), not to mention 1080p up to 120 fps, mic and headphone jacks, an excellent inbuilt mic, S-Log recording, and top-notch autofocus. Plus, the high-resolution LCD swivels to the side, so you can preview your video while vlogging:

Sony has even packed in several video-focused features designed for vloggers and other video beginners, such as a “Background Defocus” option, which instantly widens the lens aperture for a beautiful background blur effect. You also get a “Product Showcase Setting,” which tells the camera to focus on products rather than faces.

In other words, if you’re a beginner vlogger, you can get started with pro-looking videos from the get-go. 

The ZV-E10 will also perform well as a beginner stills (or hybrid) camera. The 24 MP sensor comes straight from the highly regarded a6100 and works alongside Sony’s class-leading Real-Time Eye AF and Real-Time Tracking. You can expect an impressive 11 frames-per-second continuous shooting, plus touchscreen autofocusing – making the ZV-E10 an excellent option for action photography, fast-paced walkaround shooting, and more.

The ZV-E10 will begin shipping on August 24th, though it is currently available for preorder. Prices start at $ 698 USD (body only), though you can also grab the ZV-E10 as part of a camera-lens kit.

Two Nikon DSLRs Will Ship Next Year (Plus New F-Mount Lenses)

With major camera companies dedicating themselves more fully to mirrorless technology, it might surprise you to learn that Nikon isn’t giving up on their DSLRs just yet.

Despite the recent launch of the Z6 II and the Z7 II, and despite the handful of Z-mount cameras and lenses in the works, Nikon still plans to debut two DSLRs sometime in 2021, according to an “internal presentation” reported on by Nikon Rumors.

While the internal presentation discussed many items, some of which merely confirmed that which we already knew, the highlights include various interesting tidbits about Nikon mirrorless cameras versus DSLRs; up until now, Nikon DSLRs have actually performed better than their mirrorless counterparts in terms of sales, though Nikon predicts “within 60 days that mirrorless will outsell [the] F-mount.”

But presumably as a consequence of the still-significant DSLR sales, Nikon aims to launch two DSLRs next year, along with “several new F-mount lenses.”

What DSLRs will these be?

A safe bet is that at least one will be a mid-level or entry-level Nikon model, especially because this is one area where Nikon lacks mirrorless counterparts. We might see a Nikon D3600, for instance, which should be a relatively low-priced option aimed at beginners (though bear in mind that it was rumored over a year ago that Nikon was canceling its Nikon D3500 lineup). Alternatively, we might get a more midrange option: a Nikon D7600, which is long overdue and should offer higher-end capabilities, such as fast autofocusing and strong low-light performance.

In fact, these models would correspond pretty closely to two of Canon’s few DSLR releases in the past year or so: the entry-level Canon EOS 850D (also known as the Rebel T8i) and the mid-level Canon 90D.

The second new DSLR is likely a Nikon D850 replacement; this would be a high-resolution professional model, designed for landscape and commercial shooters in particular (but with the potential to work as a wildlife or event camera, as well!).

As for the new lenses, it’s anybody’s guess, but I suspect they’ll cater more toward beginners (assuming the new cameras are entry-level models) and professional sports photography, which is one area where DSLRs are still the overwhelming choice.

Ultimately, I’m not sure Nikon’s DSLR lineup can withstand the next five or so years; it’s very possible these 2021 cameras will be some of the last DSLRs that Nikon releases. Regardless, for DSLR shooters, it’ll be nice to look forward to a couple more cameras and lenses over the coming year!

Tokina’s new 400mm F8 mirror lens for full-frame, APS-C mounts will ship in August

Tokina has announced the upcoming release of its new SZX Super Tele 400mm F8 Reflex MF, a mirror (or reflex) lens for select full-frame and APS-C camera systems.

The 400mm F8 lens manages to pack an impressive focal length into a relatively compact frame thanks to its catadioptric design. Usually reserved for telescopes, this design choice makes the smaller design possible, but at the cost of having the signature ‘donut’ bokeh, the lack of autofocus and having a fixed aperture.

The lens is constructed of six elements in five groups, offers a 1:2.5 magnification ratio and measures in at just 355g (11.82oz). It’s 74mm (2.91”) diameter and 77mm (3.03”) in length.

To make the lens as versatile as possible, the SZX Super Tele 400mm F8 Reflex MF has a 0.75mm pitch and 42mm thread mount that can be used with adapters to work with nearly any camera system. In addition to offering the base lens without an adapter, Tokina is also selling versions with included adapters for Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, Fujifilm X and Micro Four Thirds camera systems.

Canon Japan warns R5, R6 and accessories could ship later than expected due to demand

Canon Japan has warned consumers that pre-orders for its R5 and R6 mirrorless cameras — as well as some accessories — might ship later than expected due to pre-orders ‘exceed[ing] expectations.

The machine-translated statement reads:

Information About Product Supply Status

We have received orders for the following products announced on July 9, 2020 that exceeded expectations, and it may take some time before the products are delivered.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this kind of announcement following the launch of new and exciting camera gear: Nikon, Panasonic, Sony and others have done it in the past.

While there’s reasonable suspicion in these instances whether it’s purely a PR move to further drum up interest or a genuine warning that units might ship later than expected, it’s worth noting Canon specifically suggests shipments could be delayed. So, it’s worth keeping tabs on your order progress if you’ve pre-ordered one of the affected cameras or accessories.

Olympus to ship 150-400mm F4.5 this winter, adds 8-25mm F4 Pro to lens roadmap

Olympus has released a little more detail about its upcoming 150-400mm F4.5 with built-in 1.25x teleconverter. The lens’ development was first announced in January 2019, and Olympus says it will arrive on the market in winter of 2020. A couple of images of the final lens have also been shared.

Additionally, two more M.Zuiko Pro lenses have been added to the roadmap: an ED 8-25mm F4 Pro and an ‘unspecified’ macro lens which appears around the 100mm equiv., focal length on the chart.

OM-D E-M1X owners can also look forward to a firmware update in winter 2020 adding bird detection to the camera’s Intelligent Subject Tracking Autofocus.

The upcoming M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO lens, for which development was announced in January 2019, continues with an estimated scheduled release of winter 2020. This is the first Olympus® interchangeable lens with a built-in 1.25x teleconverter, extending the maximum focal length to 1000mm1 (35mm equivalent). Final images of the lens are now available.

Furthermore, to make super telephoto shooting more convenient and to fulfill the growing needs of birding and wildlife photographers, development is underway to newly add Bird Detection capability to Olympus’ Intelligent Subject Detection Autofocus on the OM-D E-M1X camera. This new feature will be available for the E-M1X via a firmware update that is scheduled for release in Winter 2020.

Fujifilm’s GF 30mm F3.5 R WR lens to ship in late July

Fujifilm has announced that its GF 30mm F3.5 R WR wide-angle lens will ship in late July or early August for $ 1699. The lens, which has been on the G-mount roadmap for several months, is equivalent to a 24mm lens when mounted on a GFX body.

The GF 30mm F3.5 has a total of 16 elements, including aspherical and extra-low dispersion glass. Focusing is internal and the lens has been designed to minimize focus breathing. It’s lightweight and compact (relatively speaking), weighing in at 0.5kg (1.1lbs). The ‘WR’ in the product name indicates weather-resistance, and Fujifilm says that the lens can operate at temperatures as low is -10°C (+14°F).

Fujifilm Launches FUJINON GF30mmF3.5 R WR Lightweight, High Resolution Lens

Valhalla, N.Y., June 30, 2020 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced the launch of the FUJINON GF30mmF3.5 R WR (GF30mmF3.5 R WR), a wide-angle prime lens with a focal length equivalent of 24mm (in the 35mm film format) for the FUJIFILM GFX System of large format*1 digital cameras.

With its dust and weather-resistant design, the GF30mmF3.5 R WR caters to a variety of shooting styles including landscapes, architecture, as well as casual snapshots on the move. “This lens is a great compliment to our existing series of GF lenses and gives image-makers a great wide-angle option for landscapes, architecture, or wide environmental portraits,” said Victor Ha, senior director, marketing and product management with the Electronic Imaging Division of FUJIFILM North America Corporation. “We are really excited to see the images our community will make with this lens.”

Image quality

The lens consists of thirteen lens elements in ten groups, including two aspherical elements and two extra-low dispersion (ED) elements. The high-performance lens groups are positioned to control various aberrations, especially distortion to which wide- angle lenses are prone, to achieve edge-to-edge sharpness. The lens is able to resolve an impressive amount of detail, compatible with 100MP sensors — “enabling the photographer to re-create the atmosphere of each scene with a sense of visual honesty and feeling,” said Ha.

Portability

This compact lens weighs approximately 18 ounces (510g) and measures 3.9 inches (99.4mm) with a maximum diameter of 3.3 inches (84mm). In addition, the slim design balances well on a GFX System camera, making it a perfect lens to carry on-the-go.

Performance

The new GF30mmF3.5 R WR lens uses an internal focusing system, offering fast and quiet autofocus (AF). Focus breathing is just 0.05%, making it a great lens for recording video. Like all of Fujifilm’s lenses in the GF family, the GF30mmF3.5 R WR incorporates Fujifilm’s optical design and production technology processes to achieve a sub-micron level precision lens surface. This allows the lens to bring out the full potential of the FUJIFILM GFX 50S and GFX 50R mirrorless digital cameras, as well as the 100MP image sensor of the FUJIFILM GFX 100.

Durability

The lens is sealed at nine locations to make it dust and weather-resistant. It can also be used in temperatures as low as 14°F (-10°C), offering photographers peace-of-mind when shooting in inclement weather or dusty environments.

ProRes Raw video capture delayed for Lumix S1H, but firmware v2.0 still set to ship next week

Videographers waiting to be able to record 5.9K ProRes Raw video footage from the Lumix S1H to their Atomos Ninja V will have to wait a bit longer as statements from both camera and recorder manufacturers have confirmed that while the expected firmware release will go ahead on Monday, May 25, Raw video won’t be included.

Atomos says a technical issue is the cause and that the delay will be ‘slight,’ while Panasonic concentrates on the other new features firmware v2.0 will bring to users. Both companies say they’re working together to rectify the problem.

There’s no indication what the problem is, but only that it cropped up in beta testing and that both companies want to ensure recording quality is at its best before the firmware is released. A new release date for the raw video feature will be announced ‘shortly.’

Firmware V2.0 for the Panasonic S1H adds ProRes Raw video capture capability when paired with an Atomos Ninja V recorder.

While the v2.0 firmware won’t have its headline feature when released on Monday, it will still offer these new features:

LUMIX S1H Firmware Version 2.0 (*RAW video data output function is not included.)

  • Down converted output over HDMI during [6K]/[5.9K]/[5.4K] video recording is available.
  • In Creative Video mode, it is now possible to disable the operation of starting/stopping video recording by pressing a shutter button.
  • In Creative Video mode, it is now possible to set [Rec Quality (My List)] from the control panel.
  • The value of noise reduction in [V-Log] in Photo Style has been expanded to [-1], designed to suppress ghosting or afterimages that could have previously occurred in some situations.
  • It is possible to prevent the enlarged view window of MF Assist to be output over HDMI.
  • There were cases where colour banding appeared in 4:2:0/10-bit video recording in some situations. This bug has been minimised.
  • There were cases where the REC RUN time code did not count up when the video was not recorded on an SD Memory Card but was recorded on an external device over HDMI. This bug has been fixed.
  • It is now possible to set [AF+MF] in AFC mode.
  • It is now possible to assign functions to the lens’ Fn buttons when the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200) is mounted.
  • It is now possible to assign function to the Fn buttons of Sigma L-Mount interchangeable lenses.
  • When attaching a lens using the Sigma MC-21 mount converter and [Image Stabilizer] > [Lens] is set to ON , Body I.S. (Image Stabiliser) suppresses roll movement.
  • [Backlight Illumination Period] has been added to the menu of Status LCD. [ON1] prevents the LCD backlight to be turned off.
  • It is now possible to select the card slot to save the JPEG images developed by in-camera RAW processing.
  • [0.5 SEC] has been added for an option of [Duration Time (photo)] in [Auto Review].
  • [Off (Disable Press and Hold)] can be assigned to the Fn button. It disables operation when the button is long-pressed.
  • The Fn button can be used for checking aperture effect while the button is pressed.
  • To prevent improper operation, touch-control is disabled for [Delete All] operation in playback mode. Only cursor buttons can be used for [Delete All] operation.
  • There were rare cases where the camera froze during [Segmented File Recording] or during recording at 400 Mbps under a particular set of conditions including the type of SD Card used. This phenomenon has been improved.
  • Aperture and shutter speed can be controlled using front/rear dials when the rear monitor is set to OFF.
  • There were cases where F stop value control failed depending on the maximum F stop value when non-Panasonic L-Mount lens is mounted. This bug has been fixed.

The new firmware will be downloadable for free via the Panasonic Japan support pages.

Atomos press release:

Atomos Ninja V and LUMIX S1H RAW firmware delay

The firmware updates enabling the much-anticipated Atomos Ninja V and Panasonic LUMIX S1H RAW over HDMI combination have unfortunately been slightly delayed from the original 25th May release schedule, to ensure the highest possible level of RAW recording.

An unforeseen technical issue has come to light in the final rounds of beta testing that needs rectification prior to shipping. The companies are working together to complete the development as soon as possible. We apologise to our mutual customers waiting for the functions this release enables.

Please note that Panasonic will be releasing Ver 2.0 firmware on May 25th with various improvements to camera functions, however will not include the planned RAW HDMI output feature. Atomos will release its Ninja V AtomOS for LUMIX S1H HDMI RAW in-line with Panasonic’s RAW output firmware.

Nikon confirms first D6 units will ship out by end of May, after a brief delay

At the time of its announcement on February 12 this year, Nikon said its flagship D6 DSLR was expected to ship in April 2020, with pre-orders starting the day of its announcement. However, due to component supply issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nikon was forced to issue a ‘notice of delay’ on March 9 stating the first units wouldn’t be shipping until May.

Nikon has held true on that promise, confirming in a press release today that the first D6 units will start shipping to customers on May 21. In addition to the new shipping date, Nikon also shared a few images captured with the new DSLR as a teaser of sorts to tide over customers (and pixel-peepers alike):

Tamron’s 70-180mm F2.8 lens should ship in mid-May for $1,199

Last October, Tamron revealed it was working on a compact 70–180mm F2.8 telephoto lens for full-frame Sony E-mount camera systems. Now, we officially have availability and pricing information for the 70–180mm F2.8 Di III VXD.

As promised, the lens is small despite its focal length range, measuring in at 149mm (5.9″) long and 81mm (3.2″) diameter, with a weight of 810g (28.6oz). The lens is constructed of 19 elements in 14 groups, including one molded aspherical element, one hybrid aspherical lens, one ‘eXtra Low Dispersion’ (XLD) element, five Low Dispersion (LD) elements and fluorine coatings. The lens is ‘moisture-resistant,’ but Tamron doesn’t elaborate on what exactly it can endure.

Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s ‘Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive’ (VXD) linear focus motor. At 70mm, the minimum focusing distance is just 27cm (10.6″) in manual focus and the aperture diaphragm features a nine-blade design. As with other lenses in Tamron’s lineup, the 70–180mm F2.8 features a 68mm front filter thread.

Tamron Announces the Launch of Lightest and Most Compact Large Aperture Telephoto Zoom Lens in Its Class for Sony Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

Third model in Tamron’s series of fast F/2.8 zoom lenses for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras delivers quiet, fast focus and superb performance

April 6, 2020, Commack, NY – Tamron announces the launch date of the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056), a large aperture telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras that is the lightest and most compact in its class. The lens will be available in the U.S. on May 14th at $ 1199. However, due to the spread of COVID-19, the release date or the product supply schedule could be delayed.

The 70-180mm F/2.8 features a compact and lightweight design with a 67mm filter diameter, the same as Tamron’s highly esteemed 17-28mm F/2.8 (Model A046) and the 28-75mm F/2.8 (Model A036). The optical construction includes several special lens elements that contribute to the lens’s overall superb imaging performance. Its very short 33.5” MOD (Minimum Object Distance) expands overall versatility. The lens utilizes Tamron’s newly developed VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism that produces an autofocus drive that’s quieter and quicker than ever before. Additionally, a floating system is used to achieve excellent optical performance at all shooting distances. By simultaneously operating two VXD units via electronic control, the system produces clear and sharp images of all objects near and far. Other features that support a great shooting experience include Moisture-Resistant Construction for added weather protection and Fluorine Coating for easy maintenance. In addition, the 70-180mm F/2.8 is fully compatible with various camera-specific features including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF. Developed under the concept of “making large aperture zoom lenses user-friendly,” the 70-180mm F/2.8 provides users with complete portrait-to-telephoto lens range coverage. 1. Compact size maximizes the mobility advantages of mirrorless cameras

A true marvel of portability and utility, the 70-180mm F/2.8 incorporates an innovative zoom mechanism and 180mm telephoto power. It was possible to maintain extreme light weight and compactness even while attaining a fast F/2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range by leveraging camera-based image stabilization. It is small: filter diameter 67mm, maximum diameter 81mm, length 5.9” at the 70mm setting, and also light weight: 28.6 oz. The super-compact size helps make handheld shooting a breeze. 2. Newly developed VXD linear motor focus mechanism delivers high-speed and high precision autofocus performance

Tamron developed its first-ever linear motor AF drive focus mechanism, VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), especially for the 70-180mm F/2.8. While operating faster than ever before, the drive also maintains positional accuracy down to 0.005mm (0.0002”), less than one tenth the width of a human hair! This provides unprecedented fast and precise AF performance. A floating system that uses two high-speed, high-precision VXD units with advanced electronic control is also used. This innovative design produces clear and beautiful images of all objects from near to far and at the same time helps reduce size and weight. In addition, its exceptional quietness enables low noise shooting in silent settings. Active athletes and moving vehicles are among the subjects commonly photographed with telephoto zoom lenses. The enhanced, highly responsive focus features of the 70-180mm F/2.8 enable following a subject’s movements to provide users with a whisper-quiet, high-precision shooting experience, not just for still images but also video.

3. Superior design for uncompromised image quality

The 70-180mm F/2.8 has an optical construction of 19 elements in 14 groups. It includes a total of six XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements combined, and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) and hybrid aspherical lens elements combined. Special lens elements are generously and optimally arranged to correct chromatic aberration and maintain very high-resolution performance from edge-to-edge. This model also features BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating, which minimizes ghosting and flare and produces stunning, clear images with brilliant, sharp subject detail. Furthermore, excellent high image quality across the entire zoom range is enhanced by camera-based distortion and shading correction. Additionally, the bokeh effect obtained using the fast F/2.8 aperture delivers beautifully smooth and soft transition from the subject to the background. The images created with this lens are emblematic of Tamron’s pursuit to combine supreme compactness with superb image quality.

4. 67mm filter diameter for system convenience

The 70-180mm F/2.8 features the same 67mm filter diameter as Tamron’s other lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras including the 17-28mm F/2.8 (Model A046), a fast ultra-wideangle zoom, and the 28-75mm F/2.8 (Model A036), a fast standard zoom, as well as the close-focusing prime lens series (20mm, 24mm and 35mm). This uniformity significantly reduces cost and trouble when working with PL, ND and other filters. Even the front lens caps are the same size, eliminating the hassle of sorting caps when switching lenses. These features combine to produce a highly convenient and mobile system that adds more fun to photography.

5. Close focusing to a mere 33.5 inches

The new 70-180mm F/2.8 lens has a MOD of 33.5” throughout the entire zoom range. This is astonishingly close for a large aperture telephoto zoom lens. The short MOD paves the way for impressive telephoto shooting at a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.6 at the 180mm telephoto end. Moreover, a floating component equipped with two VXD linear focus mechanisms maintains high image quality while effectively controlling aberrations so that the 70-180mm F/2.8 ensures great image quality even at close-up. To effectively suppress optical aberrations, this lens features a floating mechanism that ensures great image quality at distances as short as 33.5”.

Note: At the 70mm setting only, it is possible to shoot closer than the specified MOD of 33.5” (as close as 10.6”) when manual focus (MF) is set on the camera. 6. Moisture-Resistant Construction, Fluorine Coating, and Zoom Lock switch

Seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to deter infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops and afford Moisture-Resistant Construction. This feature provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Also, the front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance. Additionally, the conventional Zoom Lock switch prevents unwanted barrel extension during transportation.

7. Compatible with main camera-specific features and functions

ON1 announces upcoming Android, iOS mobile app set to ship ‘in the first half of 2020’

ON1 has announced it’s currently working on ON1 Photo Mobile 2020, a mobile app for Android and iOS that will be able to both capture and edit Raw images. The app will also sync with ON1 Photo RAW for desktop computers, with the ability to view, edit and sync images across devices.

Not much information is given on the teaser page, but from what information is available, it seems the app is part mobile camera app, part editing tool, with many features taken from ON1 Photo RAW. ON1 says the capture component of ON1 Photo Mobile 2020 will offer ‘pro-level controls you are familiar with on your interchangeable-lens camera’ and ‘is packed full of advanced features.’

As for editing on-the-go, ON1 says the app will offer ‘ the same power as […] in ON1 Photo RAW.’ Specifically, ON1 mentions the ability to enhance shadows, remove distractions, lighten/darken areas ‘and more.’ Put in more parallel terms, it sounds like ON1 Photo Mobile 2020 will offer highlight/shadow controls as well as a healing brush-style tool. Presets and local adjustments will also be available within the app.

The app will also sync with ON1 Photo RAW on your computer to ‘push edits […] back to ON1 Photo Mobile using ON1 Sync,’ a process that provides ‘a complete, open, photo editing and organizing system,’ according to ON1

ON1 says ‘ON1 Photo Mobile 2020 will be available in the first half of 2020’ for Android and iOS devices. No pricing information has been given at this time.
