The ShiftCam ProGrip wants to turn your smartphone into the ultimate camera rig

19 Jun

Shiftcam is a maker of smartphone imaging accessories best known for its 6-in-1 lens slider cases and ‘Pro’ line of accessory lenses which were all launched via successful crowdfunding campaigns.

Now the company has returned to Kickstarter with a new project: the ShiftCam ProGrip. The ProGrip is a smartphone grip designed to emulate the ergonomics of a larger camera, like a DSLR or mirrorless model. Shiftcam says it wanted to create a product that combines the accessibility and convenience of mobile phones with the familiarity and control of a traditional camera.

Landscape orientation

In addition to a quite substantial hand grip the ProGrip features a Bluetooth shutter button and a pivot construction that allows for quick rotation of the phone from landscape to portrait orientation or vice versa. This means you can shoot photos or video in any orientation without altering your hand position on the grip.

Portrait orientation

Other camera-like features include a cold shoe mount that allows you to attach lighting accessories or external microphones, and a 1/4″ tripod mount. The ProGrip also comes with a built-in battery and can charge your device wirelessly using the Qi standard. ShiftCam says the battery’s 5200 mAh capacity roughly doubles your phone’s battery life.

ProGrip with accessories

Unlike previous ShiftCam cases the ProGrip is not meant to be used with a specific smartphone model but designed to work with a long list of devices including most recent Apple, Samsung, Google, LG, Huawei and Xiaomi high-end models. ShiftCam also says that ‘based on market intelligence from our case manufacturer’ the new grip will be compatible with the yet to be launched Apple iPhone 12 series.

The ProGrip doubles as a hands-free dock with charging capability when not used for image or video capture. Thanks to the pivot design it can adjusted for content consumption or video calls.

The ProGrip doubles as a charging stand.

The ProGrip will be available in two colors, Charcoal and Putty, and backers can choose from a range of pledging options on the project’s Kickstarter page. $ 99 secures you a basic grip. The $ 119 version includes some basic accessories, like a strap or pouch. For those who have more money to spend there are also dedicated photo, video, macro and ultra-wide kits that come with accessory lenses, with pricing around the $ 200 mark. The $ 399 Pro kit includes pretty much all available accessories and a total of seven lenses.

Shipping expected for November 2020. More information is available on the ShiftCam website.

To stay ahead of the game, the designers of ShiftCam went back to their photography roots and asked themselves what is missing from the picture.

The designers recognized that one of the major differences experienced when it comes to
shooting on their phones is that it just doesn’t provide the security and balance of a traditional DSLR camera, especially while shooting for long periods of time across different locations. That is why during product development, the ShiftCam team focused on creating something that focuses on comfort and functionality to further optimize the mobile photography and videography experience. They wanted to create a product that can close the gap by combining the accessibility and convenience of mobile phones, along with the familiarity and control of a traditional camera. Thus, the creation of the ProGrip, an innovative reassuring ergonomic battery grip for your mobiles.

ProGrip is designed as a camera-like grip that allows users to securely and comfortably carry and shoot on their mobile phones. With a built in Bluetooth shutter button, you even can click and photograph like you would with a traditional camera. ProGrip also doubles as a Qi wireless battery bank which can charge your mobile phones as you shoot so you are ready to take on your next adventure. With a universal fit and a built-in pivot rotation, ProGrip can be seamlessly snapped onto most of the mobile phones and rotated to take the perfect shot. In addition, the designers also incorporated features such as cold shoe mount and 1/4″ tripod screw to the ProGrip, so you can attach your favorite accessories to complete the ultimate mobile photography and videography experience. As a bonus feature, ProGrip can also be used as a charging hands free dock for those Netflix marathons or video calls.

“We started ShiftCam with the idea to provide the tools to help safeguard the ophisticated
emotion called life and the memories that make us who we are,” said KL, founder and CEO of ShiftCam. “It is our passion for ShiftCam to be your help with the making of memories. After all, the best part of memories is making them, which is why we strive to create the best possible tool for our customers to do so, with their mobiles on the go.”

Over the last three years, the ShiftCam team has worked diligently to perfect their products. Their previous campaigns include the MultiLens cases for iPhones, as well as the ProLens Series which feature 6 distinct professional grade lenses that can be attached to mobile phones. Also, ShiftCam was notified as an honoree of the 2020 CES Innovation Awards. Prior to that, the company was honored as a recipient of the 2018 Red Dot Design Award winner and CES innovation Awards winner. ShiftCam has also been recognized by well-known media such as Mashable, CNET, Forbes, Tom’s Guide and D Preview etc. With the launch of ProGrip, ShiftCam will establish itself as one of the industry’s top players.

Shiftcam add-on lens cases are now available for Apple’s iPhone 11 models

08 Jan

Most current high-end smartphones come with ultra-wide and/or dedicated tele lenses, offering wider focal length ranges than older devices. However, add-on lenses are still a popular way to expand the creative potential of smartphone cameras even further.

ShiftCam has been supplying its add-on lens cases since the iPhone 7 generation. Now the company has announced the latest versions for the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The Shiftcam model for the iPhone 11 model adds a 180-degree fisheye lens, 10x macro, and a circular polarizer to your arsenal. The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max models get four lenses in addition to a circular polarizer:

  • 180-degree fisheye
  • 4x telephoto
  • 10x macro
  • 20x macro
  • Circular Polarizer

Like for previous Shiftcam cases, operation is easy. You move the required lens into place on a slider and select the corresponding lens of the built-in camera in the Apple camera app. This also means all your add-lenses are always with you and on the phone, so you don’t have to carry spare lenses in a bag like for more conventional add-on systems.

On the downside, your phone is bulkier than usual and you cannot use any other cases.

The new Shiftcam cases are available now. The iPhone 11 version is $ 64.99, while the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max cases will each set you back $ 74.99. More information is available on the Shiftcam website.

Shiftcam returns to Kickstarter with a 12mm aspherical smartphone lens

13 Jun

Most current high-end smartphones come with multi-camera modules with integrated ultra-wide-angles that typically offer an equivalent focal length of approximately 16mm, but if you need something even wider, or are using an older single-camera phone, Shiftcam’s latest offering could be worth a closer look.

The company, which has previously completed several successful smartphone lenses on Kickstarter, is back on the crowdfunding platform, this time with a 12mm ultra wide aspherical lens.

Like other lenses in the Shiftcam Pro line, the 12mm can be attached to iPhones via a specific case or to all other phones with a universal lens mount. The company also offers a counterweight for use on gimbals and a filter adapter.

The lens itself features six elements in four groups. The body is made from aluminum, the front element comes with a nano-coating to reduce flare and Shiftcam says the lens is practically distortion-free.

Pledges start at $ 89 for the early-bird lens and mount and go up all the way to $ 299 for the entire Shiftcam Pro lens kit. The funding goal has already been exceeded multiple times, so the project will go ahead. Delivery is estimated for August 2019. You can find more information including a full list of compatible device’s on the project’s Kickstarter page.

Shiftcam 2.0 iPhone add-on offers 6-in-1 lens-slider and ‘Pro’ lens options

13 Mar

The makers of the Shiftcam lens slider case for the iPhone have returned to Kickstarter to fund mass production of their latest development: the ShiftCam 2.0, an iPhone lens case that offers six integrated lenses in a single easy-to-use package, as well as a set of ‘pro’ lenses that slide into the same rail system.

Depending on the shooting requirements of a scene, Shiftcam users can pick a lens and slide it into place over the phone’s built-in camera, using a sliding mechanism and magnetic lens cap. Shiftcam 2.0 comes with a 2x tele lens, a 20x macro, a 10x macro, a 120-degree wide-angle lens, and a 180-degree fish-eye for the rear camera. There is also a 120-degree wide-angle adapter for the front-facing selfie camera.

The system is available in versions for the iPhones 7/Plus and 8/Plus, as well as the iPhone X.

If you want to move past the 6-in-1 slider, the ShiftCam ProLens expansion set adds that option to the Shiftcam product lineup. This series of individual interchangeable lenses includes a telephoto, wide-angle, 238-degree fisheye, “traditional” macro, and “long-range” macro options.

The lenses slot into the same rails on the Shiftcam case as the multi-lens slider, but offer what Shiftcam is characterizing as “pro level image quality.”

Pledging at least $ 50 on the Shiftcam 2.0 Kickstarter page gets you the basic 6-in-1 lens slider and case, but prices go up all the way to $ 350 for the slider, a full set of Pro lenses, and accessories. Delivery is estimated for May of 2018.

If you are interested in Shiftcam 2.0, check out the introduction video above for a quick overview. And before you put down your pledge, you might also want to have a look at our review of the original Shiftcam to get a better idea of how (and how well) the system works.

Shiftcam for iPhone 7 Plus review

07 Jun

The selection of accessory lenses for most iPhone models is pretty overwhelming. However, there is one exception: the iPhone 7 Plus dual-cam with its new 28 and 56mm equivalent lenses makes design and engineering of accessory lens solutions somewhat more complex than on the standard models. As a result, there still aren’t a lot of add-on lenses to choose from. Some time ago we tested the Kamerar attachment which adds more tele reach, macro capability and a fish-eye lens to the 7 Plus camera.

Now, you can get behind a new option on the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform. The Shiftcam camera lens case offers a similar concept to the Kamerar but aims to take things one step further by adding even more lens options. The current prototype design includes the following three lens pairs that slide over the iPhone’s dual-camera lenses:

  • 120-degree Wide-angle / 2X Telephoto
  • 10X Macro / 20X Macro
  • 180 Degree Fisheye Lens / 2X Telephoto

The makers of the Shiftcam are currently collecting funds for finalization of the design and mass production on the Shiftcam Kickstarter page, but got ahold of a prototype unit. Read on to find out how it performed in our testing.

Operation and build quality

The Shiftcam system consists of two parts: a protective case and the lens module that slides into a guide rail on the case. The module can be removed if you aren’t planning to use the lenses for a while and want to keep them in a safe place. The build quality is a far cry from the premium look and feel of the iPhone, but the Shiftcam’s plastic material feels solid and the design is functional. The lens module moves noticeably smoother than on the Kamerar, but still slots into place with reassurance. A small camera grip allows for comfortable holding and the corrugated surface ensures a safe grip. You can also attach a camera strap.

As with the Kamerar, it is advisable to use a camera app that allows you to force the camera to use the tele-lens in lower light, such as Camera+ or Manual Camera for example. In dimmer conditions, the iPhone 7 Plus stock camera app will digitally zoom the wide-angle rather than using the telephoto lens, which means the Shiftcam lenses don’t line up properly with the iPhone’s camera modules anymore.

Image quality

As you can see in the samples below the add-on lenses only have a minimal impact on color response and exposure. Both wide-angle and fisheye are sharp at the center of the frame but fall off towards the edges. As you would expect, this fall-off is more drastic on the fisheye. Some vignetting is noticeable when photographing bright scenes on the wide-angle but the effect is within acceptable limits.

Overall the optical quality of the Shiftcam wide-angle and fisheye is not outstanding, but decent for smartphone add-on lenses in this price range. Both lenses are useful for those situations when you want to squeeze more of a scene into your frame.

iPhone 7 Plus wide-angle, ISO 20, 1/754 sec
Shiftcam wide-angle, ISO 20, 1/2037 sec
Shiftcam fisheye, ISO 20, 1/2179 sec

The Shiftcam comes with two tele lenses, one combined with the wide-angle, the other comes in a pair with the fisheye. The two lenses offer an identical focal length multiplier but having two of them simply means you don’t have to change the position of the Shiftcam lens slider so often.

However, on our prototype unit the image results of the two tele lenses were quite different. One lens showed a very noticeable softness across the frame while the other was much sharper. If Shiftcam manages to get the optical quality for both tele lenses on the same high level as our second telephoto sample shot below, it offers a great way of getting closer to your subject when shooting with an iPhone.

iPhone 7 Plus tele lens, ISO 20, 1/2128 sec
Shiftcam telephoto lens 1, ISO 20, 1/643 sec
Shiftcam telephoto lens 2, ISO 20, 1/736 sec

The Shiftcam case also comes with 10x and 20x macro lenses which are located next to each other on the lens slider. The 10x uses the iPhone’s wide-angle lens, the 20x is in front of the tele. Both lenses are capable of producing good sharpness in the focal plane and very useful levels of magnification.

That said, depth-of-field is minimal and putting the focus where you want it is a real challenge. As you can see in the sample below, shooting handheld I did not quite manage to do so with the 10x lens, despite several attempts. My hit rate with the 20x was better and with the right subject it’s possible to capture very nice macro images. You’ll have to get very close to the subject though, so living creatures might be scared away. You also have to be careful to not shade the scene with your phone.

Shiftcam 10x Macro, ISO 20, 1/1140 sec
Shiftcam 20x Macro, ISO 20, 1/479 sec

Conclusion

The optical quality of the Shiftcam lenses is pretty much in line with typical add-on lenses in the lower price bracket. The wide-angle and fisheye are fine at the center of the frame but get pretty bad towards the edges. One of the tele lenses is pretty sharp, but the other one on our test unit appears to be slightly misaligned. The macro lenses can produce decent quality if focused correctly.

However, the Shiftcam’s unique selling proposition is not optical quality but the fact that it combines all those lenses in a very easy-to-use lens case. Switching lenses is really quick and much less fiddly than with individual add-ons or even the Kamerar, which, despite a similar concept to the Shiftcam, uses 2 lens sliders instead just one.

If you own an iPhone 7 Plus, the Shiftcam is a very affordable and convenient way of experimenting with add-on lenses and expanding the focal range of your built-in camera. Given that we were using a prototype unit, there is also a chance that optical quality will be further improved for production lenses. You’ve still got a few more hours to secure a Shiftcam case by pledging $ 59 on Kickstarter. The Shiftcam makers have also modified the original August shipping date and are now envisaging the first units to ship by the end of June.

What we like:

  • Easy operation
  • Useful hand grip and good ergonomics
  • Good selection of lenses

What we don’t like:

  • Strong corner softness on fisheye and wide-angle
  • One of the tele lenses is soft
  • Macro lenses difficult to focus

Shiftcam is a 6-in-1 lens case for the iPhone 7 Plus

15 May

The dual-camera of the iPhone 7 Plus with its 28 and 56mm equivalent lenses, offers more flexibility in terms of focal length and framing than most smartphones. The Kamerar attachment we tested some time ago increases this flexibility even further by adding more tele reach, macro capability and a fish-eye lens.

The new Shiftcam camera lens case that is now on Kickstarter takes things one step further by adding even more lens options. The concept it similar to the Kamerar, with a system that is built around a shock-proof case that comes with a camera grip and an optional wrist strap. A snap mechanism and sliding lens module allow for quickly switching between telephoto, wide-angle, fisheye and macro options. The current prototype design includes the following lenses:

  • 120 Degree Wide-angle
  • 10X Macro
  • 20X Macro
  • 180 Degree Fisheye Lens
  • 2X Telepho

The makers of the Shiftcam are currently collecting funds for finalization of the design and mass production on the Shiftcam Kickstarter page where you can also secure a Shiftcam case by pledging $ 59. Shipping is planned for August 2017. We are hoping to get our hands on a review unit soon for a more in-depth look.
