Like the A1000, it has a 16MP, 1/2.3″ BSI-CMOS sensor. Unlike that camera, its LCD is fixed and not touch-sensitive, there’s no EVF and Raw isn’t an option. The B600 can capture 1080/30p video (as well as 60i/50i) and also includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The MSRP of the camera is $ 329.

book tunnel interior

Paired to fantastic effect, a series of arch-forming shelving units and a black-mirrored floor create a wraparound tunnel in a Chinese bookstore, punctuated by a fracture leading visitors through the resulting passageway.

Designed by Shanghai studio XL-Muse (images Shao Feng), these floor-to-ceiling shelves in the Yangzhou Zhongshuge bookshop drew inspiration from the winding and reflective Zhen Yuan river nearby, as well as the area’s arched bridges.

“In the past, guided by water, many literati and poets visited and gathered here,” said XL-Muse, and these regional infrastructural icons were “used to be the guiding factor of culture and commerce, and they represent that the bookstore is the bond between humans and books at the same time.”

The tunnel opens up into a vast library-worth realm of further reading in the cavernous interior, with architectural elements echoing the arches of the entry corridor. The rounded-and-arched theme is carried through in thin pillars and sloping displays.

Additional interior design dimensions come into play in themed reading spaces for children and adults, with starry ceilings and other humanizing elements. Here, furniture colors and shapes soften these spaces and make them more comfortable and inviting for longer-term occupation.

Bracket All the Things: Reclaimed-Surface Tables & Shelves

16 Nov

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Furniture & Decor. ]

What started as a set of infinitely-flexible table legs has now spawned a second but equally stellar sibling design: a series of wall brackets that let you turn scraps into shelving and switch out surfaces whenever you find something neat and new (or old).

floyd table bracket set

Made in Detroit, the Floyd Leg system allows users to choose what kind of material they want to create anything from desks to dining, coffee, side or even ping-pong tables.

The owner simply splices the desired surface between the colorful and variable-height brackets, be it reused lumber and scraps or new off-the-shelf boards – as a bonus, the bracket system means the surfaces can also be uneven.

Using the same design strategies, the Floyd Shelf mounts to walls and will let you swap in and out whatever you want to use With its industrial aesthetic, the adjustable bracket set lends itself particularly well to rugged or worn found materials.

“I was moving frequently between cities and constantly disposing of furniture. The legs were born out of this circumstance and the idea also resonated with our friends. We decided to launch a Kickstarter to gauge what the public reaction would be to the legs,” says Kyle Hoff, creator and co-founder. With an initial goal of producing 100 sets, the pair raised funds for an initial run of over 1,500 sets and shipped to 33 countries.

“Backers sent in photographs of their creations. It was exciting to see people employ the legs in ways that reflected their own living spaces,” says Alex O’Dell, co-founder. The Floyd Legs are produced in Detroit utilizing the existing manufacturing infrastructure. “We appreciate having our production facility only a 10 minute drive away. It allows us to more close- ly integrate the manufacturing and design processes, while also ensuring the quality of our prod-ucts,” says Hoff.

The Floyd Leg serves as a pilot piece for a greater line of products that the company will be launching in September 2014. “We’re committed to producing simple, flexible furniture made for denser living in cities. High design furniture is inaccessible and mass produced often means disposable,” says O’Dell. “One of our goals is to really rethink the way people buy and engage with furniture—from the purchasing experience to shipping and assembly,” says Hoff.

Modular Shelf Compact Living Rooms 1
Does maintaining a sizable amount of your living space for a single purpose that’s only required for a short period each day really make sense? What if you could simply switch out the function? ‘Elastic Living’ by Italian furniture maker CLEI makes it possible to do just that with sliding shelving units for different purposes that can be moved out of the way when you don’t need them.

The modular spaces all fit together into one big rectangular box when not in use. Need the kitchen? Slide it out, cook, and then put it back up when you’re done. The same goes for the living room, bedroom, bathroom, home office, gym and closets.

Inspired by library wall racks, the series contains seven different room functions that can easily be ‘filed away.’ It’s meant for a large, open space, like a loft or warehouse, and would be less practical for a home that’s already divided into different rooms.

Stop Shops: Virtual Store Shelves in Subway & Bus Stations

20 Mar

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

virtual shopping

If you are going to have to wait for a ride anyway, why not do some shopping? No, not on your laptop or that tiny screen of your smartphone – right there on the wall, via virtual aisles on a life-scaled billboard full of products.

First in South Korea thanks to Tesco, and now popping up in Australia and other countries, it works something like this: a range of popular everyday products is displayed on the wall; scan the QR codes of the ones you want and your purchase will be added to a digital shopping cart.

In many cases, your purchases will arrive the next day – in some, they will be waiting for you when you get home, saving you that side trip to the corner store or local supermarket.

If nothing else, this presents an interesting technology-bridging mechanism for those reluctant to shop online. They choose from real products, presented at actual size, in a potentially more familiar mode of browsing than via the internet.
