Video: How one photographer turned his backyard shed into a camera and darkroom

29 Apr

Photographer and DIY camera extraordinaire Brendan Barry has used his time in lockdown to create a camera and darkroom out of a shed in his yard.

Throughout the above 22-minute video, Barry summarizes the build process, showing what was required to turn his compact shed into an all-in-one photo room and the process required to capture the image and make the resulting prints. As you might expect from such an ambitious project, it took a good bit of time to get everything sorted out and even more time to dial in the capture and printing process.

A close-up screenshot from the video showing off the massive 1016mm (40″) F5.4 aerial reconnaissance lens used in the build.

‘In [the video] I talk through the build and operation of the shed camera, bring together a number of the processes I experiment with and shares some of the materials and approaches I use in my practice,’ says Barry in an email to DPReview. Barry specifically notes he used ‘RA4 colour reversal, B&W paper negs contacted to positives and shooting with direct positive paper, both with normal chemistry and with caffenol’ to capture and make prints of the images captured with the ridiculous rig.

While this is technically possible to do at home, it will require plenty of power tools, spare wood you might have sitting around, a generous amount of gaff tape and an insanely large lens (a 1016mm [40”] F5.4 aerial reconnaissance lens in Barry’s case).

We’ve featured Barry’s previous projects before, including his 101 Park Avenue skyscraper camera, his shipping container camera and his guide to turning any room in your home into a camera. This shed project might not be his most grandiose project to date, but it certainly required a healthy dose of elbow grease and equal amounts of patience.

You can find more of Barry’s work on his website and keep up with his latest endeavors on his Instagram profile.

Video: How Lewis Hine’s photos helped shed light on child labor in the US

24 Feb

As part of its ongoing series ‘Darkroom,’ Vox has published a video showing how the work of photographer Lewis Hine helped bring to light the injustice of child labor across the United States.

The roughly seven-minute video not only shows the meticulous work of Hine, but also contextualizes the significance of his photography, which was captured at a time when 1.75 million children aged 10–15 were at work in factories, mines, plantations and other dangerous work environments. In total, more than 5,000 photographs were captured, each of which is accompanied by a detailed caption of its subject(s).

It’s a brilliant breakdown and well worth a watch. You can find more videos from Vox’s ‘Darkroom’ series on Vox’s YouTube channel.

Video: Taking natural light portraits in a backyard shed

11 Aug

Photographer Irene Rudnyk has published a new video demonstrating how she captured portraits in her backyard using a garden shed and natural light. The process was fairly simple, involving a backdrop, large circular reflector, and two-step ladder, the total cost of which was minimal, camera gear aside.

The portraits were captured using a Mamiya 645 camera with a Mamiya 80mm F1.9 lens and Porta 400 film, as well as on digital using a Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon 85mm F1.2 lens. Two of the portraits captured during the photoshoot are available on Rudnyk’s Instagram account. Rudnyk’s other work can be found on 500px.

Flickr may be up for sale as Yahoo Board of Directors looks to shed web properties

30 Mar

The future of Yahoo and its many operations, including the photo sharing behemoth Flickr, is uncertain. According to reports, the company’s board is now accepting bids for its web properties, with a deadline of two weeks to submit proposals.

While Yahoo has not specifically said which operations are up for sale, they have given hints to what a new, slimmed-down Yahoo might look like. According to Reuters, if the board’s restructure goes through as planned, Yahoo will center around Yahoo Search, Mail and Tumblr, as well as four ‘digital content strongholds,’ which include News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle.

This seems to indicate that at least according the company’s board, Flickr has no place in the future of Yahoo. But not so fast – there are several other factors at play that could put the kibosh on a sale altogether.

One of these factors is an attempted hostile takeover of Yahoo’s board by activist investor Starboard Value. Many shareholders, unhappy with financial results, have run out of patience with the current boards plan to turn Yahoo around. This is where Starboard Value comes in. Last Thursday, they announced their intent to overthrow CEO Marissa Mayer, and presented a list of nine alternative board members to replace the current board at the annual shareholder meeting in June.

If Yahoo is unable to get the ball rolling on sales of its assets before June, there’s a chance that a new board will be ushered in, and move the company in a different direction entirely.

On the other hand, more than 40 companies have expressed interest in owning a piece of Yahoo, including Microsoft, Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, Time and many more. Whether or not any of those companies specifically have an interest in Flickr is difficult to say. As of June 2015, Flickr had a formidable 112 million active users. That’s not quite the 400 million users Instagram claims to have, but its still a sizable community. For the record, Flickr was first purchased by Yahoo back in 2005, for $ 25 million.

All the while, Mayer is sticking to her plan for turning around the company, which includes laying off 15 percent of the company’s workforce, closing unprofitable ventures, all while spinning off Yahoo’s stake in Alibaba Group as well as Yahoo Japan into a separate company.

Needless to say, if you’re in the market for a photo sharing site, now’s the time to bust out the checkbook and make an offer. We just hope if Flickr does make its way into new hands that it goes to a good home.

Best snake SHED video. Baby corn snake. AMAZING detail (full shed)

08 Nov

My pet corn snake Leeroy was due to shed. When he started pressing his face against the corner of the tank, I ran for my video camera. Usually he sheds in the middle of the night… was he actually going to do this in front of us?? Leeroy is the best and never ceases to amaze me. Last week he swallows a baby mouse while hanging and now this!! Here is a super high quality video of him shedding, from start to finish. Video was taken with a DSLR Nikon D90… sorry, I still need work on manual focusing with shallow depth of field 🙂

In this video, I will show you how to use speedlights indoors in various configurations. Keep in mind that this is a simple bounce with a single flash for beginners in a very dim room. Examples of other more advanced indoors and outdoors lighting can be found on photographylife.com and http
