Ricoh shares 360º photos, videos from space captured in partnership with JAXA

Ricoh has published photos and video captured with a specialized version of its Ricoh Theta 360-degree spherical camera developed in partnership with with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

‘The camera was installed to monitor the operation of the biaxial gimbal of the SOLISS (Small Optical Link for International Space Station),’ says Ricoh in its press release. ‘It was carried aboard the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV8) “KOUNOTORI-8”, the cargo transporter to the International Space Station (ISS), which was launched on September 25 , 2019.’

The specialized Ricoh Theta camera was modified so it could withstand the heat and radiation in space. The images and video from the camera were captured from the Exposed Facility of the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), nicknamed ‘Kibo,’ and subsequently sent back to ground stations on Earth.

In addition to the images in this article, Ricoh has also posted the photos and videos on the JAXA Digital Archives and on its Theta Lab website, where the content can be viewed interactively in 360-degrees.

Atomos shares info on S1H ProRes Raw update, to offer 16-bit Raw capture with Sony FX9

Atomos has made two announcements that will bring improved video recording capabilities to two recently-released cameras: the Panasonic Lumix S1H and the Sony FX9.

First up, Atomos has shared more information regarding a previous announcement that it was working alongside Panasonic to co-develop a means to capture Raw video for the Lumix S1H. Atomos has now provided both a timeframe (albeit a rough one) and official specifications for the impending firmware update.

Atomos says the S1H firmware update will make it possible to record 5.9K/29.97p Raw and C4K/59.94p video on the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder over HDMI. Currently, the Lumix S1H can record 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/29.97p (16:9 aspect ratio) and 59.94p 4K/C4K, so this update will be a substantial bump in recording capabilities.

In its announcement, Panasonic also revealed that ProRes Raw would be the codec supported for Raw recording. The firmware is scheduled to be launched in early 2020.

Atomos has also announced that it’s Neon 8K MCU (Adorama, B&H) will support 4K 16-bit Raw recording from Sony’s recently-unveiled FX9 camera. Details are scarce, but Atomos’ press release, embedded below, implies the functionality will be available when the FX9 ships later this year in December 2019.

It seems Atomos is adamant on working alongside camera manufacturers to get the most from the sensors inside the manufacturers’ latest cameras. In January 2019, Atomos said it was working with Nikon to bring 4K Raw video capture over HDMI to its Ninja V external recorder.

We’ve since learned this update won’t be free and will require cameras to be sent into Nikon service centers to perform an ‘internal upgrade’ to the camera, but the promise still remains. According to the latest information, the 4K Raw video update is still scheduled to be released before the end of the year.

LUMIX S1H Firmware Development Underway for 5.9K/29.97p and C4K/59.94p RAW Video Data Output to Atomos Ninja V

Newark, NJ (September 13, 2019) – Panasonic is proud to announce the development of firmware for the LUMIX S1H full-frame mirrorless camera which enables the output of 5.9K/29.97p RAW and C4K/59.94p video data to the Atomos Ninja V monitor-recorder. The firmware is scheduled to be launched in early 2020.

The LUMIX S1H is the world’s first camera to combine professional-level video quality, the high mobility of a mirrorless camera and a Full-Frame sensor. It is currently capable of video recording at 6K/24p*1 (3:2 aspect ratio), 5.9K/29.97p (16:9 aspect ratio), and 59.94p 4K/C4K.*2 *3 The LUMIX S1H will be introduced in late September 2019.

Panasonic has a long history of collaboration with Atomos. This relationship will deliver new RAW video functionality for the S1H. 5.9K up to 29.97p and C4K*3 up to 59.94p in RAW delivered over HDMI is in development. With this firmware Apple ProRes RAW can be recorded on the Atomos Ninja V.

A LUMIX S1H prototype with this firmware will be exhibited along with the Atomos Ninja V in the Panasonic booth (Booth No. C45, Hall 11) at the IBC2019 (International Broadcasting Convention) to be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from September 13-17, 2019.

Nikon shares D6 development teasers on social media before taking them down

Earlier today, Nikon Europe published a number of posts to social media teasing the development of its D6 camera, the not-yet-official next generation flagship DSLR from Nikon.

The posts, which were shared on Nikon Europe’s official Twitter and a Facebook account called ‘NikonLifeEU’, all teased the arrival of the D6 in text and included an attached video as well. As seen in the screenshots, shared with permission from Nikon Rumors, the two Twitter posts read:

The Facebook post also shared a video, but read:

The newly announced #D6 development will reinforce Nikon’s DSLR’s advantage in sports photo journalism. Top Pro and #D5 user Joel Maryland talks about how Nikon’s cutting edge technology has helped him stay ahead of the game. Stay tuned for more from #Nikon!

As noted by Nikon Rumors reader br0xibear, the video posted alongside the text wasn’t new footage, but a video of Nikon Europe ambassador Joel Marklund talking about shooting with the Nikon D5 at the Olympics. So, while there was no explicit mention of the D6 in the video, the text is very clear a Nikon D6 DSLR is on the way.

We have contacted Nikon to confirm whether or not the ‘NikonLifeEU’ Facebook page is its official account, but considering it too removed the development teasers and the rest of its post history mirrors the official Nikon Europe Twitter account, it seems likely to be the case.

Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel shares his wisdom on focal length choices

Vanity Fair has published an interview on its YouTube channel with American cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel – who was director of photography for Bohemian Rhapsody, X-Men: Apocalypse and The Usual Suspects amoung many others. He talks about the way different focal lengths make people and objects in the scene feel closer together or further apart, and how the sense of perspective is altered depending on the camera position and the amount of background included in the shot.

During the interview Sigel talks us through clips from Three Kings, Drive and Bohemian Rhapsody explaining what he hoped to achieve in that particular shot and the lenses he used to do it. It’s a fantastic watch with an experienced and well-spoken artist.

NASA shares new portrait of Jupiter captured by Hubble Space Telescope

The aging Hubble Space Telescope has produced a new full portrait image of Jupiter, our Solar System’s stormy gas giant. NASA shared the image earlier this month, though it was captured by the space telescope on June 27. The portrait features Jupiter’s colorful bands, as well as its iconic Giant Red Spot, a massive storm that has been raging on the planet for hundreds of years.

According to NASA, the new image features ‘a more intense color palette’ related to the clouds visible in Jupiter’s atmosphere, exceeding that of past portraits. The space agency explains that this new image was captured in visible light using Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.

NASA describes the importance of the image in a post, pointing out various bands and colors that hint at changes in the gas giant’s atmosphere. The two cloud bands visible below and above the Great Red Spot, for example, are moving in opposite directions, NASA explains, each separated by winds moving up to 644km/h (400mph).

The portrait comes amid ongoing work with the James Webb Space Telescope, which will eventually replace Hubble, offering newer technology and improved camera capabilities, among other things. The new space telescope is scheduled to launch in 2021.

Woodstock photographer shares what it was like to photograph the 1969 music festival

Henry Diltz, an official photographer of the Woodstock music festival held in August 1969, has detailed his experience in a new six-minute video produced by Keeper and directed by Scott Hanson. Diltz captured thousands of photos during the three-day festival, which was attended by nearly half a million people.

‘It’s almost every day now, people are asking me to interviews, about Woodstock, to use my photos, and my remembrance of it,’ Diltz says in the new short film. The photographer explains how he landed the job, revealing that he was only able to attend the event thanks to lighting director Chip Monck, who sent Diltz a plane ticket and $ 500.

Unlike other photographers who attended the music festival, Diltz explains that he was allowed to shoot from a walkway built for the film crew, putting him directly in front of the concert stage. It’s from this position that Diltz was able to capture iconic photos of renowned artists, including one he says he managed to capture with all four members of The Who in the same image, something that was difficult using his widest lens.

Canon Australia shares accidental ‘first look’ at EOS M6 Mark II, EOS 90D cameras

Canon Australia appears to have leaked two upcoming cameras – the EOS M6 Mark II and the EOS 90D, in a pair of videos posted on its YouTube channel (which have been taken down in the minutes since we started drafting this article). The two videos gave a ‘first look’ at what appear to be forthcoming mirrorless and DSLR APS-C products.

Canon Australia has since removed the videos, but Canon Rumors downloaded them before they were taken down and uploaded the videos to its YouTube channel.

Canon M6 Mark II

According to the video, the Canon EOS M6 Mark II will feature major improvements over its predecessor, the EOS M6, both in terms of ergonomics and specifications.

Most notably, it looks like the EOS M6 Mark II will feature a 32.5-megapixel CMOS sensor powered by a Digic 8 processor. It will have a continuous shooting speed up to 14 fps with autofocus, Eye Detection, Dual Pixel AF and a dedicated MF/AF Focus Mode Switch button on the rear of the camera.

Canon Australia notes in the video’s description that the M6 Mark II will be able to shoot 4K/30p video and 1080p at 120 fps. Also shown in the video is a removable OLED viewfinder that works with the Touch & Drag AF on the rear camera display and a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth transfer option, although the specifics of the transfer technology remain unknown.

Canon EOS 90D

Also leaked by Canon Australia was what we presume to be the promo video for the EOS 90D, Canon’s next-generation APS-C DSLR.

According to the video, the 90D will feature a 32.5-megapixel sensor with a Digic 8 processor behind it (presumably the same combination found in the EOS M6 Mark II). IThe 90D appears to be limited to 10 fps continuous shooting, but it too has Dual Pixel AF, Eye Detection AF and a 45-point all-cross-type autofocus sensor with a joystick for navigating through the AF points.

The optical viewfinder inside the 90D features 100-percent coverage and includes a 220K-dot RGB + IR metering sensor that features Canon’s iTR AF (face-detection).

On the video front, the video doesn’t share much, but notes the 90D will shoot 4K 30p video and up to 120 fps when shooting in 1080. The video also says the 90D is dust- and water-resistant and can be paired with Canon’s BG-E14 battery grip, the same one used for Canon’s 70D and 80D cameras.

No pricing information or definitive release date was mentioned in the videos, but given both were posted on an official Canon channel, and have since been removed from YouTube, we assume that the EOS M6 II and EOS 90D are real, and coming soon.

Video: Cinema5D shares more exclusive BTS video of the Fujifilm GFX 100 being built, launched

Earlier this month, we shared with you the first part of Cinema5D’s two-part documentary that shares a behind-the-scenes look at how Fujifilm is bringing its medium-format GFX 100 mirrorless camera to life. Now, Cinema5D has dropped part two, which further dives into the intricacies of creating, testing and launching the world’s first 100-megapixel mirrorless camera.

The 12-minute video shares exclusive footage of how Fujifilm meticulously pieces together GFX 100 units inside its Taiwa, Japan factory, which was opened in September 2018 and designed specifically for the creation of Fujifilm GFX and X-series cameras and lenses. The video also shares a collection of footage captured with a pre-production model of the GFX 100 and takes a behind-the-scenes look at what it took to get the official launch presentation in order.

Voigtländer shares new information on its 75mm F1.5 Nokton for Leica M

Optics manufacturer Cosina has released more details of its forthcoming 75mm F1.5 Nokton lens in its Voigtländer Vintage Line for rangefinder cameras using the Leica M mount. Cosina’s intension to make the lens was first announced in February, but now the company has revealed more detailed specifications.

The Vintage Line lenses have a classic-style exterior, with an all-metal barrel and a design to suit more traditional cameras. Voigtländer says though that the optical design is thoroughly modern with the aim of excellent image quality in that matches today’s camera standards. The coupled rangefinder system will suit Leica M and Voigtländer’s own Bessa cameras, and allows focusing distances from 0.7m (2.25ft). The lens uses 7 elements in 6 groups, including aspherical correction and the iris features 12 blades.

Measuring 63.3mm (2.5in) long and 62.8mm (2.47in) in diameter, the lens weighs 350g (12.35oz) and will use a 58mm filter. A slit-style lens hood is included, and will match the black or chrome finish of the lens itself. Below is a small sample gallery of images provided by Voigtländer:

Kipon shares new details of upcoming 12mm F2.8 lens for Fujifilm X-mount cameras

Kipon has shared new details about an upcoming 12mm F2.8 manual wide angle lens for APS-C camera systems.

The Ibegon 12mm F2.8 lens is being sold under the Kipon name, but its optical formula was designed by the German IB/E Optics. Its optical construction consists of 12 elements in nine groups and it features a seven-blade aperture diaphragm. It has a minimum focusing distance of 15cm (approximately 6in) and an aperture range between F2.8 and F22.

Currently, the product page only mentions availability for Fujifilm X mount camera systems, but Kipon previously teased at CP+ 2014 that it would be available for MFT, Sony E and EOS M mounts as well. Kipon hasn’t shared specific pricing information, but says it plans to ship the lens starting September 2019.
