Olympus patent points at sensors with built-in polarizing filter

04 Aug

Olympus has patented a technology that records polarization information on the sensor itself, giving the effect of a polarizing filter but without the light cost. The patent is for a two-layer sensor that records color and brightness information on the top layer, just like a conventional sensor, but then has a second layer that captures information about the polarization of the light arriving at the camera. Samsung working on slimmer RWB camera sensors

29 May

Photos from a Samsung presentation have emerged online, providing some insight about the company’s upcoming image sensors for mobile devices. It appears Samsung is working on chips that use a RWB (red, white, blue) color filter instead of the conventional RGB pattern. This allegedly improves color fidelity and light sensitivity, allowing for smaller pixels. In turn, this could mean smaller camera modules in future smartphones. Read more

Samsung Galaxy S6 units found to be using different image sensors

07 May

When the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were launched earlier this year there was no talk of the ISOCELL technology previously used by the Galaxy S5’s and Note 4’s in-house image sensors, so it was believed the 16MP 1/2.6 CMOS chip in the S6 was provided by Sony. However, rumors have emerged that in some units Samsung sensors are used instead of the Sony variant, and a company spokesperson has confirmed that different sensors are used. Read more

Sony’s Curved Sensors May Allow for Simpler Lenses and Better Images

18 Jun

sony-curved-sensor.jpg

The sensors inside digital cameras are – generally – flat. But curved sensors promise greater sensitivity, better image quality, and provide scope for simpler lenses. Recently, Sony showed off some examples of curved image sensors, including (tantalizingly) a full-frame chip. Device manager Kazuichiro Itonaga claims: “The team has made somewhere in the vicinity of 100 full-size sensors with their bending machine. We are ready.” Read on to learn more about this exciting new tech, how it imitates the human eye, and how it may find it’s way into consumer products.

Panasonic promises high sensitivity sensors using ‘Micro Color Splitters’

04 Feb

mcsthumb.jpg

Panasonic has devised a method to increase the sensitivity of image sensors, by replacing the near-universal colour filter array with prism-like ‘Micro Color Splitters’ to generate colour information. The key advantage is that all of the incoming light is directed to the sensor, instead of half or more being absorbed by the color filter dyes. This promises to deliver images with less noise in low light. The development is published in the journal Nature Photonics, and outlined in a press release on Panasonic’s website.
