Risk-Taking Russian Rooftopper: Woman Takes Terrifying Skyscraper Selfies

09 May

[ By SA Rogers in Travel & Urban Exploration. ]

If you’re afraid of heights, a mere glance at these photos taken by Russian daredevil photographer Angela Nikolau might be enough to give you the heebie-jeebies. The 23-year-old scales some of the tallest skyscrapers in Russia and Asia, either using a selfie stick, a drone, or bringing her boyfriend Ivan Kuzenetsov along to take the photos. And as if perching on the edges of structures at such extreme heights isn’t enough, she often does yoga poses or wears stilettos while doing so.

The self-taught climber is not too concerned about bypassing security and breaking trespassing laws to capture these incredible images, and virtually no building is too tall. Angela and Ivan climbed all 2,000 feet of the Golden Finance 117 building in Tianjin, China last fall.

Other illegal conquests include the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the Shanghai Tower in China, the Tsing Ma bridge in Hong Kong and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Unsurprisingly, many of the photos have to be taken late at night to avoid being caught.

Angela’s casual poses might be the most disconcerting aspect of the photos, especially for those of us who imagine death-gripping the edge if we managed to make it up that high. She’s often lounging dangerously close to certain death, holding on to a ladder with just one hand or hanging barefoot off cranes. In some images, she’s held aloft by her boyfriend, dangling hundreds of feet off the ground.

Study: people don’t actually like looking at selfies

11 Feb

A couple of weeks ago a Sony-sponsored study found that consumers are ready to embrace selfies as a tool. Now a research paper, published by Sarah Diefenbach and Lara Christoforakos of Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich published in Frontiers in Psychology in January suggests that a majority of smartphone users enjoys taking selfies, but very few people like looking at selfies of others.

The paper is titled ‘The Selfie Paradox: Nobody Seems to Like Them Yet Everyone Has Reasons to Take Them’ and is based on a study that surveyed 238 people from Austria; Germany and Switzerland. Of those who responded, 77% said they take selfies at least once a month and 49% said they receive selfies from others at least once a week. While respondents thought of their own selfies as somewhat ironic and playful, they had less favorable views on others’ selfies.

‘Altogether, participants expressed a distanced attitude toward selfies, with stronger agreement for potential negative consequences (threats to self-esteem, illusionary world) than for positive consequences (e.g., relatedness, independence), and a clear preference (82%) for viewing more usual pictures instead of selfies in social media.’

Many respondents also thought selfies could have an adverse effect on self-esteem and create a superficial and inauthentic image of the person taking and sending them. 90% of participants regarded others’ selfies as self-promotion. However, only 46% of respondents said the same about their own selfies. The research team acknowledges that the results are potentially biased towards the surveyed regions, and that other cultures have more accepting attitudes towards selfies. As so often in science, further study is required.

Study finds consumers are ready to embrace selfies as a tool

27 Jan

For some, selfies are a form of self-expression. Others find them annoying. But one thing is certain: they won’t go away anytime soon. A Sony-commissioned study has found that the top ten future uses for smartphone cameras will include banking, shopping, healthcare and dating. The study finds that over a third of consumers would feel more secure if banks used selfies as passwords and a quarter would prefer to see their general practitioner via a selfie or video call than in-person.

The study was undertaken by futurologist organization Futurizon with the market research company OnePoll who conducted data research and surveyed 6500 people across the UK, Germany, France and Spain.

The report identified the top ten ways consumers believe selfies could be used in the next five years:

  1. Dating: Taking a selfie with your date to find out what they really think
  2. Medical: Over a quarter of people would prefer to see their GP via a selfie or video call, in the first instance
  3. Banking for the selfie generation: Nearly half of 25-34 year olds would feel more secure if accessing their bank through a ‘selfie password’
  4. In leisure: Around half of thrill-seekers would like to try a ‘selfiecoaster’ – a rollercoaster that puts you in control of capturing your experience on the ride
  5. In a gym / fitness: selfies that work with AI (Artificial Intelligence) to capture body monitoring e.g. testing heart rates and even suggesting how to improve on technique and how accurately a move is being performed
  6. Made to measure clothes: taking a 3D body image for made-to-measure clothes
  7. In retail: using your smartphone camera to try on different outfits suited to your body shape, at the touch of a button
  8. Social currency: paying for entry to the cinema or a tourist attraction through a selfie
  9. Robots: Using your smartphone to control drones or robots to take selfies from other or extreme locations
  10. Home: Using selfies to secure and access our homes and cars

Dr Ian Pearson, Futurologist and creator of the Future of Selfies report said, “The results clearly show that selfies are well on their way to transitioning from frivolous fad to technological phenomenon, and provide food for thought to a number of industries. The potential is huge, and it will be exciting to watch this unfold over the coming years.”

Most of the selfie applications described above seem technologically possible today. So, if there’s a market for them, we’ll probably be able to use them at some point in the short to medium term.

Would you be interested in using selfies in any of the ways listed above? Let us know in the comments.

New technology alters perspective in selfies, generates 3D images, and more

31 Jul

A team of researchers from Princeton University and Adobe Research have detailed a new project in which they use a 3D computer model of a head and a virtual ‘full perspective’ camera to manipulate the perspective of a single portrait. The manipulations simulate various shooting distances and the warps typically seen at those depths, potentially allowing software adjustments that create selfies with corrected perspective distortion.

A demo system (currently in beta) on lead researcher Ohad Fried’s website allows you to upload your own images to explore the technology.

The front-facing lenses found in smartphones cameras are often wide-angle, fixed focal length, to make them as flexible as possible, but the close-up nature of selfies tends to show distortions such as large noses or sloping foreheads. Interestingly, these distortions can change how the individuals are perceived; the subjects in portraits taken at close distances are often described in ways that include ‘approachable’ and ‘peaceful’ while subjects in portraits taken at longer distances are more often described as ‘smart,’ ‘strong,’ and ‘attractive.’

While it might be beneficial to take selfies at longer distances and longer focal lengths to eliminate the distortion, there is no practical way to do so with present phone technology. This newly developed technology could change that, however, with the researchers explaining: ‘our framework allows one to simulate a distant camera when the original shot was a selfie, and vice versa, in order to achieve various artistic goals.’

The researchers based their method on existing approaches to manipulating images, including the type of technology used in face-swapping apps. The key difference was using a ‘full perspective’ virtual camera model rather than a more simplistic, ‘weak perspective’ model, enabling them to compensate for the wider range of perspective adjustments needed for portraits taken at very close distances. This new method is able to estimate the camera distance and edit the perceived camera distance. Its modeling of depth also allows slight changes in the position of the virtual camera, allowing the photos to be slightly ‘re-posed’.

The technology promises than just correcting selfie perspective. The ability to slightly correct perspective and map facial features to a 3D model allows the creation of stereo pairs of images (3D anaglyphs) from a single image, or could make it possible to animate changes in facial expressions.

Beauty-centric Panasonic Lumix GF8 is all about the selfies

Skyscraper Selfies Shanghai 3

Your stomach will drop just looking at the stunning photos captured by some of the world’s most daring urban explorers, who scale insanely high towers all the way to the top and take casual selfies like it’s no big deal. Whether illegally base-jumping off One World Trade Center in New York or climbing to the apex of a 2300-foot-tall skyscraper in Shanghai, these daredevils clearly have no fear of heights.

Hong Kong Trio Scale Skyscraper, Snack on Bananas

Skyscraper Selfies Hong Kong 1

If this picture alone gives you a little bit of vertigo, wait until you watch the video. A trio of teenage photographers – Danuel Lau, Andrew Tso and A.S. – climbed a 1,135-foot-tall skyscraper in Hong Kong. Casually snacking on bananas, they make the whole task of getting to the top and photographing themselves with a wide-angle camera on a stick seem like it’s no big deal at all.

19-year-old Alexander Remnev of Russia went on a trip to Dubai with a bunch of friends, and rather than just stick to the typical tourist activities, he decided to go on a little adventure. The daring photographer and his crew climbed many of the city’s tallest and most intimidating buildings and photographed themselves at the top, including the world’s tallest residential building, the 1,350-foot-tall Princess Tower.

Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov got so high into Shanghai’s sky, they were literally above the clouds. The Russian duo sneakily and meticulously planned their stunt to avoid getting busted by China’s notoriously tough law enforcement, waiting until the Chinese New Year day when there would likely be few people around. They spent nearly 18 hours at the top of China’s Shanghai Tower, which reaches an incredible 2,130 feet into the air when you count the extra length of the crane at the top.

Few people get quite the same dramatic city views that Tom Ryaboi is able to take in, daring to climb onto the rooftops of the tallest buildings in any given city to take photos while dangling over the edge. The pioneering Vancouver-based ‘rooftopper’ and photographer told Resource Mag, “Rooftopping is something I do whether I have a camera or not. Being in high places is just something I need to do to keep a balanced head.”

Giant faces measuring 25 feet in height emerge in three dimensions from an ‘architectural Mount Rushmore’ at the entrance of Sochi’s Olympic Park. ‘MegaFaces’ is an interactive installation by architect Asif Khan consisting of a fabric pavilion that is manipulated into the shape of visitors’ faces by 11,000 actuators located just under the cube’s stretchy membrane.

Three visitors at a time enter a booth located inside the pavilion to have their faces digitally scanned and displayed on a massive scale for everyone outside to marvel at. Each face is magnified by 3500%. The effect is that of a giant pinscreen, but it’s technically the world’s first “three dimensionally actuated large-scale LED screen.”

The 11,000 actuators that create the images are tipped with translucent spheres containing RGB-LED lights, so a combination of physical movement and light intensity creates the pinscreen effect. The idea is that anyone can “become a hero,” reflected to the world on a large scale.

“Whether we are taking a self-portrait and posting it for our friends to see, or texting an emoticon to show how we feel, we’ve translated a fundamental means of self-expression into a new medium,” says Khan. “That is why I think of this pavilion as a synergy between architecture and digital platform. At the same time it’s a monument to all of us. The concept is to make people the face of the Olympics.”
