Dressed in garments from centuries long past, figures from classical paintings peer out the windows of metro cars, vend souvenirs, browse comics and otherwise interact with unlikely scenes in modern-day Naples, Italy. Artist Alexey Kondakov is back with another round of ‘Art History in Contemporary Life,’ his mash-up series that gives the world a new perspective on paintings from the distant past.

The Ukrainian artist is known for relocating angels, royals, knights, the Virgin Mary and other subjects from classical works by artists like Hans Holbein and William Bouguereau into modern-day scenes with careful attention to light and shadow for a convincing result.

Though the subjects remain painterly and the backdrops are crisp photographs of everyday city environments, the blended images read less like Photoshopped collages and more like finished works ready to be hung on museum walls.

Given this new context, the figures suddenly seem more real than they ever did before, as if we really could come across them playing harps in subway stations or hanging out in grungy bars.

Naples is a fitting choice for the latest series, simultaneously giving a nod to Italy’s history as birthplace of High Renaissance Art and illustrating how much the city has changed over the past 500 years. Previous iterations of ‘Art History in Contemporary Life’ were set in the artist’s hometown of Kiev, Ukraine. Check out more images from the Napoli Project at Kondakov’s website or Facebook.

Change of scenery: How a photographer’s trip to Idaho inspired a big move

What could convince a California native to leave the state’s famously beautiful coasts and sunshine behind? For photographer and Resource Travel editor Michael Bonocore, a visit to Idaho’s pristine wilderness and towering mountains was enough. He recently spent some time traveling and photographing the state, from bustling Boise to the untouched powder of the Selkirk Mountains.

The photographic opportunities were so rich and the possibilities for outdoor adventure so abundant, Bonocore decided to make a full-time move to the Gem State. See some of his photos here and read the full account of his trip on Resource Travel.

Real Life Photoshop: Giant Eraser Takes Out Urban Scenery

Real Life Photoshop Eraser 1

In another case of Photoshop invading the real world in three dimensions, giant erasers are appearing all over urban surfaces in London. Murals, street signs, billboards and trash bins are among the objects getting the Photoshop treatment with ‘Street Eraser,’ a joint project by artists Guus Ter Beek and Tayfun Sarier.

The installation consists of a series of handmade stickers plastered all over the city, featuring the gray and white checkered pattern that appears when you erase something in Adobe Photoshop.

A similar project used cardboard props to recreate the look of a photoshopped image in progress, with the photographer using the eraser tool on himself. Another photographer takes Photoshop tools literally with humorous interpretations of commands like ‘convert to smart object’, ‘smudge’ and ‘puppet warp.’

Riverbend Ponds Natural Area

October 24 2012. One of seven lakes in Riverbend Ponds Natural Area from a morning photowalk. Camera: Canon EOS 5D.

Riverbend Ponds is one of City of Fort Collins Natural Area created along the Cache la Poudre River from former gravel mines. It is a popular area for walking, jogging, birdwatching and photography. I am adding to those activities some paddling here using my packraft or SUP (stand up paddleboard).

I added this picture together with a few others to stock photography portfolio. There are available for immediate download and licensing as royalty free pictures.
