CAMERADACTYL Mongoose Automated 35mm film scanner goes live on Kickstarter

Product designer Ethan Moses of CAMERADACTYL has launched a new film scanning product on Kickstarter called Mongoose. This device can be used with ‘just about any camera’ that has cable release support, according to Moses; it has three scanning modes, including a Fast Mode that can scan a roll of standard-sized exposures in less than one minute.

Mongoose is an automated 35mm film carrier that can be used with most cameras to digitize black & white and color negatives, as well as slide film. The Mongoose features a 27mm x 68mm film gate, enabling it to scan anywhere from half-frame images at 24mm x 20mm up to Hasselblad Xpan-sized panoramic images at 24mm x 65mm. Each scanned image includes a ‘full black border,’ but Mongoose doesn’t support scanning the film’s sprocket holes.

According to Moses, Mongoose was designed in such a way that it only touches the portion of the film where the sprocket holes are located, ensuring the film lies flat for scanning even if it is a cupped or curly film.

Mongoose is designed to be used with a third-party lightbox or some other source of light, such as a strobe with a diffuser, as well as a stand for holding the camera above the film and a lens that can focus close enough to digitize the content.

The film scanner is fully automated with a number of features that give users a fair amount of control over the process, including offering Fast and Manual modes in addition to the Automatic mode. Manual mode gives users full control over the process, including enabling them to manually advance and retract the film strips and to manually trigger the camera using Mongoose’s control box.

Automatic mode is more accurate than Fast mode, according to Moses, who explains on Kickstarter that Automatic can be used with rolls of film that have unevenly spaced frames because it uses edge detection to capture each image. ‘This mode has very high positional accuracy, and can scan a full roll of 36 frames in under a minute and a half,’ he says.

That’s nearly double the 40-second capture time of Fast mode, which can only be used with film that has evenly spaced frames. The big advantage of Fast mode is that it can rapidly scan a roll of film, but the downside is that it has less positional accuracy when compared to Automatic mode.

Users are able to adjust Mongoose’s edge detection sensitivity for use with underdeveloped/exposed film. Likewise, users are able to adjust the delay between each film frame; it can be turned off so that the scanning takes place very quickly or it can be slowed down so that the scanner accommodates other aspects of the overall setup, such as strobe light recycling time.

Finally, Moses notes that Mongoose can be used with strips of film that have as few as four frames, though it’s better when used with an entire roll. Likewise, Mongoose was designed with a separate control box so that users who are manually triggering shots aren’t at risk of bumping the scan module. Moses also says that Mongoose is not a silent device, and that it is, in fact, quite loud when in use.

Moses is seeking funding for his latest CAMERADACTYL product on Kickstarter, where Mongoose has already exceeded the funding goal. The product will ship to backers with the scan module and control box, connection cord, power supply, and an electronic shutter release cable. Kickstarter users have the option of backing the campaign at $ 500 or more with estimated delivery of this third batch (the first two are sold out) starting in February 2021.

Video: Fotodiox tutorial transforms portable scanner into a 4×5 digital camera back

Photography gear company Fotodiox has published a new video showing viewers how to turn a portable scanner into a 4×5 digital scanner back for use with large format cameras. The video tutorial is based on a concept published by Randy Sarafan on Instructables.

In Fotodiox’s version of the project, the team uses a Flip-Pal Mobile Scanner, which costs around $ 180 on Amazon; other models could also be used, video host Sean notes in the tutorial. The scanner is paired with a CameraDactyl 4×5 camera ($ 200) and a 5×7 Fresnel sheet ($ 5).

Sean notes that the digital back cannot provide the same level of quality as 4×5 film, but he says that it’s ‘such a cool idea, I had to try it.’

The project kicks off with Sean grinding the scanner’s glass using 600 grit silicon carbide and a small piece of glass. This transforms the panel into ground glass, which is then paired with the sheet of Fresnel glass for more even light distribution. The ground glass is reattached to the projector and the Fresnel is attached to it using ordinary duct tape.

The camera was then duct-taped to the projector, as well, with Sean noting that he used the CameraDactyl model partly because it is very lightweight.

After opening the aperture and focusing the image, Sean covered the back of the camera with a dark object to keep light out, then hit the ‘scan’ button on the digital back. The scanning process took about 20 seconds and the result was a ‘4×5 film look’ from a digital scanner.

As far as downsides go, Sean notes that this scanner arrangement can’t capture color images and that the image is captured off the ground glass, which means the texture from the glass results in grainy images. Photographers may also have to deal with scan lines in some images.

Ultimately, though, Sean explains: ‘I get a really shallow depth of field. It just has this really nice vintage 4×5 film look.’

Review: Kodak Scanza film scanner is easy-to-use, but overpriced

The Kodak Scanza is a simple, non-professional film scanner. It wears the Kodak logo, but has no affiliation with Kodak Alaris, the company bringing back Kodak T-Max P3200 and Ektachrome.

What’s included

Opening the box you’re greeted with HDMI, USB and video out cables, an AC adapter, user manual, the scanner itself (in bubble wrap below), a toothbrush shaped surface cleaner and a handful of plastic film holders. Pretty much everything is plastic and feels a little cheap in its construction quality.

Format compatibility

In terms of film format flexibility, the Scanza is… okay. There’s no option for medium format, though you can scan 35mm, 110, and 126 formats as well as 8mm/Super 8. The 8mm/Super 8 option is misleading, though. This is not for scanning a whole reel of 8mm film, this is specifically for scanning individual frames of 8mm or Super 8 slides.

In use

The biggest thing the Scanza has going for it is ease-of-use. Even if you’ve never scanned film before, you can expect to be up and running in around 10 minutes.

To operate it, plug in the power (the scanner uses a widely available micro-USB to USB cable for power) either to an AC outlet or your computer, insert an SD card (this is where scans are saved), press the power button, select your film type, load the holder with your film, insert it and press the capture button. Done. Scanning takes only a couple of seconds per negative/slide.

Despite some gripes with the Scanza, the usability of this thing is awesome and for those intimidated by the more technical conundrums of photography/scanning, it is super freeing.

If you’re plugged into the wall and the 3.5″ LCD feels too small to view your images, don’t fear: In addition to the Micro-USB, you’ve got Video-out and HDMI-mini ports (cables included for both) so you can view your scans on a TV or monitor screen. This additional connectivity feels like a bit of an unnecessary feature, but I’m not going to count it against the Scanza because connecting it to a TV reminded me of using a slide projector and that is the most Kodak thing about this product.

The scanner is 14MP but offers a 22MP scan option that interpolates the images and ups the resolution from 4320×2880 pixels to 5728×3824 pixels. In use, we found the 22MP mode entirely unnecessary. There’s no option for TIFFs or DNG, only JPEG. (Prosumer scanners like the Nikon CoolScan 9000 and Epson V-series accommodate TIFF and DNG workflows, giving your film scans a lot of editing flexibility). Also, the scanning area ends up slightly cropping your photos, mostly horizontally – if you’re a perfectionist, this may bother you.

The biggest thing the Scanza has going for it is ease-of-use

When scanning you’ve got the option to perform color adjustments which includes Brightness, Red, Green, and Blue levels, all on an arbitrary scale of -3 to +3. In testing, just +1/-1 on any of these scales was too drastic a change to be used effectively. Unless your film is severely expired and has a significant color shift, I’d stay away from these settings to keep your scans as accurate as possible.

The scans in the gallery above are from a 35mm roll of Fujifilm Natura 1600. Below is an example of an image scanned using the Scanza (left) next to the same image scanned by a local photo lab here in Seattle (right). For what it’s worth, said lab charges $ 18 for processing and scanning a roll of 35mm color film.

Scan quality isn’t terrible, but a quick comparison to a professional lab scan shows the limits of the Scanza. For simply preserving memories, or scanning to share on social media, the Scanza’s quality should be good enough.

Bottom Line

This is not a bad product, it’s just an overpriced one for what it is. For similar cash, you can invest in a decent flatbed scanner with film trays – like the Epson V550 – which offers higher-quality scans and greater versatility, but at the cost of speed and ease-of-use.

For those simply wishing to painlessly make digital copies of years of photos, the Scanza is a decent option. But we have a hard time believing it is much better than this similar option with no Kodak label, priced half as much.

  • Scanza sometimes crops images

Epson FastFoto FF-680W, world’s fastest personal photo scanner, now available

Epson has launched its new FastFoto FF-680W High-Speed Photo and Document Scanning System, a model it claims is the fastest personal photo scanner currently available. At max speed, the FastFoto FF-680W can scan a photo every second at 300dpi (up to 36 photos per batch).

The FF-680W, which builds upon the existing FF-640 model, supports a variety of media types, including Polaroids, postcards, and panoramic photos, as well as scanning in 300dpi (“easy sharing”), 600dpi TIFF (“archiving”), and 1200dpi (“enlarging”) modes. More than one mode can be used per photo batch. The scanner also supports document scanning with OCR.

Both USB and wireless connectivity is supported. Users can directly share scanned images to Google Drive and Dropbox, capture handwritten notes on the back of an image during a single scan, and perform modest photo restoration and edits using Epson’s ScanSmart software.

The Epson FastFoto FF-680W scanner is available through the company’s website and at select retailers, including Amazon, for $ 599.99 USD.

Kodak Scanza is a portable, budget film scanner that turns negatives into JPEGs

Kodak has launched a new budget scanner that digitizes film and slides. The scanner, called the Kodak Scanza, is compact at just 12cm x 12.7cm (4.7in x 5in), and features: a 3.5-inch color screen, an integrated SD card slot for saving scanned content, adapter trays for different types of film, and an HDMI port for viewing scanned content directly on an external display.

Kodak Scanza, which was introduced at CES 2018, supports 35mm, 110, Super 8, and 8mm film negatives and slides via inserts and adapters. Content is scanned as 14MP JPEGs, though users can enlarge the resolution up to 22MP.

The integrated screen, which is hinged for tilting, provides access to pre-scanning options, such as exposure and color adjustments.

Both Windows and macOS are supported out-of-the-box, and scanned content can either be saved to a compute, or directly to an SD card inserted into the scanner’s built-in card reader. Kodak Scanza will be available to purchase from Amazon for $ 170 USD. Availability and pricing in other regions is unclear at this time.

Blackmagic unveils Audio and KeyKode Reader for the Cintel Film Scanner

Blackmagic Design has taken the wraps off a new Cintel Film Scanner accessory called the Cintel Audio and KeyKode Reader. With this accessory, Cintel Film Scanner users are able to capture both KeyKode data and high-quality audio from film in real-time as it is being scanned.

This is made possible thanks in part to ‘deep red LED illumination’ as well as a magnetic audio head; captured audio is ‘perfectly synchronized with the video,’ the company promises, explaining that its accessory supports silver optical, high-magenta dye, 16/35mm cyan, and 16mm magnetic audio tracks.

To aid in post-production, users can utilize this new accessory to scan their film’s KeyKode numbers, making it easier to match corresponding frames after scanning has finished. Other features include a capstan encoder that can fix wow and flutter automatically, highly precise mechanical adjustments for azimuth, and electro-formed slits.

The Cintel Audio and KeyKode Reader is available now from Blackmagic’s resellers for $ 3,495. The Cintel Film Scanner, meanwhile, is priced at $ 29,995.

Epson’s FastFoto FF-640 scanner can digitize a photograph in one second

The newly unveiled Epson FF-640 is, according to Epson, the fastest photo scanner in the world. The model can scan photographs as rapidly as 1 image-per-second, doing so at 300dpi, or more slowly at a higher quality 600dpi resolution. Unlike flatbed scanners, the new FastFoto model features a 30-photo auto feeder, scanning the images to a hard drive and then providing the option to upload the files to online destinations including Dropbox, Google Drive, or Facebook.

The rapid scanning rate is made possible in part by technology that scans both the front and the back of a photo simultaneously. In addition to the scanning capabilities, the related Epson software organizes image files in such a way that they’re easy to find using searchable metadata, ‘recognizable file and folder names,’ and a capture date that, when possible, uses the date the photo was taken rather than the date it was scanned.

FastFoto also includes Epson’s Smart Photo Fix Technology; with it, users can press a related button and allow the software to automatically restore their photos, applying things like red-eye reduction, fade correction, and ‘enhancements.’ This is complemented by Dynamic Skew Correction, a technology that works with multi-roller scanners to auto-correct the angle at which the photo is scanned.

Finally, the FF-640 has what Epson describes as a ‘special handling sheet’ that is used to scan old or otherwise fragile photos. The Auto Size Detection tech means differently sized photos can be scanned in the same stack, while Double Feed Detection works with an ultrasonic sensor to help ensure no photos are skipped during the scanning process.

The Epson FF-640 is now available from Epson’s online store and some major retailers for $ 649.99.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 combines S7 camera with large display, S-Pen and iris scanner

In keeping with its established product innovation cycle, Korean manufacturer Samsung has today launched the latest model in its Note line of large format smartphones, the Galaxy Note 7. Judging by its specifications the new device looks like an impressive package but is in many ways more of a refinement of previous models rather than a radical overhaul.

The camera module, for example, comes with the same specification as the smaller Galaxy S7 and S7 edge devices. A 1/2.5″ 12MP sensor with 1.4-micron pixel size is combined with a fast F1.7 aperture, optical image stabilization and dual pixel on-sensor phase detection AF. The front camera has a 5MP sensor and F1.7 aperture.

Processing specifications are identical to the S7 as well. The US version of the device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset while the international versions will come with Samsung’s own Exynos octa-core chip. All models come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage that is expandable via a microSD-slot.

The Note 7’s characteristic 5.7″ dual-edge display offers Super AMOLED technology and a 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD resolution. It’s also the first display to feature Gorilla Glass 5 which should survive a drop from 1.6 meters height. As on the predecessor, the edges of the display are curved and offer Samsung’s unique Edge interface for quick access to contacts and apps. While some competitors have started to dispense with the headphone-jack the Samsung still offers this standard connector, next to a new USB Type-C port. All the components are powered by a 3,500mAh battery, which is a little smaller than the variant in the S7 Edge.

Notable new features include an iris scanner above the display that allows you to unlock the phone or access secured content. Samsung says that in the future the scanner will let you log into accounts or use Samsung Pay, but none of these functions are currently implemented. The design of the Note series’ characteristic S-Pen stylus has been slightly altered, too. It is now water-resistant and at 0.7mm comes with a thinner tip which should make for a more natural writing experience. 

Overall the Galaxy Note 7 looks like an appealing proposition for those users who like to work with larger screens and a stylus for photo editing. The camera module has already been tried and tested on the Galaxy S7 models and currently among the very best.

X-Rite i1Profiler v1.4 features scanner profiling
