Samyang teaser suggests two new astrophotography prime lenses will be released later this month

04 Apr

Samyang, also known as Rokinon or Bower depending on the retailer, has posted a teaser on its Facebook page for two upcoming lenses — a full-frame lens and an APS-C lens — which appear to have been designed specifically with astrophotography in mind.

Samyang doesn’t reveal the focal length or aperture for either lens, nor whether these are manual lenses or autofocus lenses, but both lenses are relatively compact primes based on their respective silhouettes. Samyang says the lenses will be ‘Masterpiece[s] for Astrophotography,’ with night sky photos (presumably captured with the respective lenses) as the background for the teaser.

The duo will be out by the end of the month, according to the post, so it shouldn’t be long before we know the details.

Samyang has released its own lens simulator web app

21 Sep

Optics manufacturer Samyang has released a new lens simulator web app that allows you to see how certain lenses will affect the look of a scene based on sensor size and lens settings.

The web app creates a simulated scene using a cutout portrait of a woman as well as three backgrounds. By changing the sensor size, focal length, aperture and distance, the scene will adjust to show a simulated representation of what the image would like like when the shutter is pressed.

The web app is somewhat rudimentary, but its simulated representations do a good job of showing photography newcomers how crop factors, focal lengths, apertures and the subject’s distance from the lens can impact the look of an image. Samyang also includes an option to select on of its lenses to use as a preset of sorts to see what a given Samyang (also sold under the Rokinon/Bowen brands) lens will produce.

Both Canon and Nikon have lens simulators of their own, so this isn’t exactly an original idea, but it’s yet another option you can try out.

Samyang announces its AF 85mm F1.4 lens is now available for Canon RF mount

29 May

Last year, Samyang1 released the AF 85mm F1.4 FE prime lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. Now, the lens has been updated with a Canon RF mount to work with Canon’s line of full-frame mirrorless cameras, too.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_2578928428″,”galleryId”:”2578928428″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Aside from the new mount, the lens remains unchanged from its Sony FE predecessor. The lens is constructed of 11 elements in 8 groups, including one Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) element and four High Refractive Index (HRI) elements to help minimize chromatic aberration. The optical elements also use Samyang’s Ultra Multi Coating (UMC) to keep flares and ghosting under control.

Autofocus is driven by Samyang’s Dual Linear Sonic Motor (DLSM) and the sole button on the lens is the AF/MF button for switching between auto and manual focus. The lens features weather-sealing, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm and a 77mm front filter thread. Below is a sample photo, provided by Samyang:

The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 RF is expected to ship in June for $ 800, with pre-orders opening up before then. The RF version comes in at $ 100 more than the Sony FE version was launched at and $ 200 more than what the Sony FE is currently selling for. We will update this page when pre-orders become available.

1 Samyang is also sold under the Rokinon and Bowens brand names, depending on your region and the retailer you purchase from.

26 May

Samyang, which is also sold under the brand name Rokinon, has released updated versions of two of its best-selling lenses: the MF 14mm F2.8 MK2 and the MF 85mm F1.4 MK2.

The updated manual focus lenses feature the same optical designs as their respective predecessors but add new features to provide a more seamless and robust user experience. In particular, both lenses now have weather-sealing, an updated focus ring for better grip and a switch for de-clicking the aperture without the need to tear it apart. The 14mm F2.8 MK2 also has a new focus lock switch for ensuring the focus doesn’t get bumped out of place during operation.

Both lenses are available for Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon M and MFT mount camera systems. As of writing this article, no pricing information is available for the lenses and no online retailer appears to have a product page up. We have contacted Samyang for additional information and will update accordingly when we receive a response.

Samyang launches AF 18mm F2.8 FE lens for Sony full-frame cameras

30 Aug

Samyang has listed a new AF 18mm F2.8 FE lens as available for pre-order. The model has appeared on the Samyang website and Adorama, offering photographers an ‘ultra-compact’ lens with a 100-degree field of view (FOV) for Sony full-frame cameras. The lens weighs 145g (5.1oz), features 9 elements in 8 groups, 7 diaphragm blades, 58mm filter size, F2.8 to F22 aperture and 0.09x maximum magnification.

The Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE lens features a stepless motor and is constructed from a ‘glass-strengthened composite material,’ according to the company, which offers a combination of durability and reduced weight. The lens’ glass is ‘ultra multicoated’ for what Samyang describes as high sharpness, contrast and clarity with minimal distortion.

Below is a sample gallery of images provided by Samyang:

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_3061873981″,”galleryId”:”3061873981″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The lens’ motor can focus to a distance as close as 25cm (9.8in). The company bills the model as suitable for shooting interiors, as well as architecture, landscapes, and other environments in which a lightweight wide-angle lens would be useful. The Samyang AF 18mm F2.8 FE lens is available to pre-order for $ 399 USD; the shipping date is unclear at this time.

Samyang XP / Rokinon SP 35mm F1.2 sample gallery

01 Jul

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_0099637412″,”galleryId”:”0099637412″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

Ultra fast and ultra heavy, the Samyang XP / Rokinon SP 35mm F1.2 is one serious lens. The focusing ring is huge and well-damped for incredibly smooth operation, and it’s one of only a handful of 35mm F1.2 lenses on the market that will cover a full-frame sensor. It also comes with full electronic contacts, so aperture is controlled from the camera and metadata is intact (and it works perfectly with Canon’s RF adapter and a Metabones adapter on Sony).

Is it perfect wide-open? No, but it’s darn good. From portraits to landscapes, take a look through our sample gallery to see what F1.2 could do for you.
