Rumor: Canon’s next mirrorless camera could have 45MP sensor with IBIS and possible 8K/30p video

Yesterday, Canon Rumors posted an interesting list of rumored specifications for a Canon mirrorless camera it believes will be called the EOS R5. Today, additional details have emerged, painting a picture of what would be an impressive mirrorless camera if the rumored specifications hold true.

According to Canon Rumors’ report, which was created with information shared via multiple, unrelated anonymous sources, the camera could feature a 45-megapixel sensor with in-body image stabilization and still frame rates up to 20 frames per second. Specifically, Canon Rumors claims the IBIS will offer five stops of image stabilization on its own and up to 7–8 stops when used with in-lens stabilization as well. The still frame rates are still up in the air, as the sources are apparently offering conflicting information, but it appears as though it could be 14 fps and 20 fps for mechanical and electronic shutter, respectively.

According to Canon Rumors, the camera will offer 4K video at 120 fps and could offer 8K Raw at up to 30 fps, although it is noted that the 4K / 120 fps could be a crop mode to control heat and the 8K Raw could refer to a special timelapse mode in the camera.

Those specs are enticing, but it’s the rumored video features that are really interesting. According to Canon Rumors, the camera could offer 4K video at 120 fps and could offer 8K Raw at up to 30 fps, although it is noted that the 4K / 120 fps could be a crop mode to control heat and the 8K Raw could refer to a special timelapse mode in the camera.

Other details rumored include the addition of a scroll wheel, the removal of the touchbar, a larger-capacity battery that looks similar to the LP-E6/N batteries currently used by Canon, and an announcement date ‘ahead of CP+ next month.’

Canon users have long been asking for an R-series camera body worthy of Canon’s growing lineup of RF-mount lenses and if these rumors indeed come to fruition, it’s safe to say there won’t be much room left to complain. However, these specifications are just that: a rumor, so there’s also the possibility these are little more than hearsay or misleading fragments cobbled together from multiple other rumors.

In light of these rumored specifications, let us take a second to ask you, the reader, how you would like to see Canon evolve its R-series lineup going forward?

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S11+ sensor to use Nonacell technology

Yesterday we posted a story about the technology in Samsung’s 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX image sensor and said the chip was likely to make an appearance in the Korean manufacturer’s upcoming Galaxy S11 series.

It looks like this might not be entirely correct. According to a tweet by infamous mobile industry leakster Ice Universe the Galaxy S11+ will use a customized version of the chip that uses a technology that Samsung calls Nonacell.

The standard sensor comes with the company’s tetracell technology, also known as Quad-Bayer, that uses pixel merging for better detail and lower noise levels in low light. Nonacell follows the same concept but instead of four combines — you guessed it — nine pixels into one.

The sensor is said to be called ISOCELL Bright HM1 and will be the successor to the HMX variant that we’ve seen in the Xiaomi Mi Note 10. On the latter four 0.8µm pixels are combined into one 1.6µm effective pixel. On the new sensor the effective pixel size would increase to 2.4µm, theoretically allowing for significantly improved low light performance at a still more than acceptable 12MP output size.

The Galaxy S11 series is scheduled to launch in February 2020, so hopefully, we’ll be able to have a closer look at then sensor and its performance then.

Rumor: The Olympus E-M5 III to be launched October 17th, use same 20MP sensor as E-M1 II

According to the most recent report from 4/3 Rumors, Olympus’ next camera, presumed to be the E-M5 III, will be announced on October 17, 2019, and feature the same 20-megapixel sensor that’s inside the E-M1 II.

In its report, 4/3 Rumors breaks down the summary of the rumored information it’s received thus far saying with ’99 percent’ certainty that the announcement will be made on October 17, 2019, and with ’80 percent’ certainty, the new camera will feature the same 20MP 121 cross-type phase-detection sensor as the E-M1 II.

The report also states with ’90 percent’ certainty the new camera will come with a new processor that should, in theory, result in better image quality despite using the same sensor. Other details in the report say with ’60 percent’ certainty that the camera will have a ‘lighter, more plasticky but still weather-sealed body’ and use the same BLS-50 battery also used by the Olympus PEN and E-M10 cameras.

If this information does end up holding true, the E-M5 III is shaping up to be an incremental improvement rather than a revolutionary advancement.

Update (September 23, 2019): Corrected to reflect the 20MP sensor the rumored E-M5 III will be based on is in fact the E-M1 II, not the E-M5 II.

Meyer Optik Görlitz confirms rumor that Nocturnus was a rebranded Chinese lens

Meyer Optik Görlitz, the German brand that offered lenses through Kickstarter before its parent company filed for insolvency last year, has confirmed speculation that the Nocturnus lenses were slightly modified versions of a Chinese lens, and the Somnium lenses were modified versions of a Russian lens.

The brand’s new owner OPC Optics revealed its finding in a press release, stating that it had spent time analyzing the Meyer Optik products and planning how it would move forward with the brand. According to OPC Optics Managing Director Timo Heinze, ‘It’s fair to say that the previous organization and processes shocked us on occasions.’

Among other things, the company said it discovered that past speculation about the Somnium and Nocturnus lenses proved true, and as such it will discontinue both ranges ‘for the time being.’ The company didn’t say which lenses were used, but online speculation over the years had pegged the $ 3,000 Nocturnus as a modified $ 849 Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 lens.

Heinze explained, ‘That is an absolute no go. As a German manufacturer using the ‘Made in Germany’ quality seal, this is a shameful indictment. These lenses may be perfectly good in their own right, but their production methods and marketing goes against all our principles.’

Heinze acknowledged that Meyer Optik may relaunch lenses ‘with similar characteristics’ under its ownership in the future, but they would not be rebranded, modified Russian and Chinese lenses. The potential future lenses ‘would, of course, be our own designs
and produced by us, in order to genuinely earn the ‘Made in Germany’ label,’ according to Heinze.

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S10 triple-cam to offer super-wide-angle and 3x tele

We’ve already heard rumors about Samsung launching three models for its upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship smartphone generation, including one featuring a triple-camera on the back.

Now more information has surfaced about the specifications of the Samsung triple-camera and if the rumors turn out to be true, mobile photographers will have something to look forward to.

According to German website AllAboutSamsung, the South Korean manufacturer’s upcoming flagship will be the first smartphone to combine a super-wide-angle and a tele-lens with the primary camera. The super-wide-angle is expected to come with a 123-degree angle of view, the tele lens with a 3x magnification, offering a wider zoom range than any other smartphone.

The only current smartphone with triple-camera on the market, Huawei’s P20 Pro, doesn’t come with a super-wide-angle option and instead opts for a monochrome sensor for increased low light capabilities and a native monochrome shooting mode. The main options for smartphone users who want a built-in super-wide-angle, LG’s recent models, have to make do without a tele-zoom.

The rest of the rumored Samsung specifications sound promising, too: the super-wide-angle is expected to come with a 16MP resolution and F1.9 aperture, the primary camera will supposedly feature a 12MP sensor and dual aperture, and the tele uses a 13MP imager and F2.4 lens. No OIS or autofocus will be available on the super-wide-angle but given the angle of view those features might not be missed.

If the rumored specs are close to the real thing and Samsung’s engineers manage to merge image information from all three sensors in an efficient way, the new Samsung could be the smartphone for photography in 2019. We will know more in a few months time.

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S10 to feature triple-camera

We only recently published our Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus review but the smartphone business is extremely fast moving and we are already seeing the first rumors surrounding Samsung’s next generation Galaxy S10 models which should be due for release sometime around the end of February 2019.

The S10 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Korean manufacturer’s high-end Galaxy S line and is expected to come in three variants, with the the top-of-the-line model featuring a Huawei P20 Pro-style triple camera.

On the Huawei a wide-angle RBG camera is combined with a monochrome sensor and a tele-camera with 3x zoom factor. That said, Samsung is expected to develop and implement its own sensors to differentiate the Galaxy S10 from the competition.

The Galaxy S10 base model is rumored to come with a single-camera and a 5.8″ display. The second variant in the line is expected to offer a dual-camera, likely an upgraded version of the Galaxy S9 Plus setup, and the same display size, albeit with with Samsung’s trade-mark curved edges.

The top-end version could feature a larger screen with under-display fingerprint reader and the aforementioned triple-camera. For now Huawei’s P20 Pro is still the only smartphone with a triple-camera in the market but it looks like next year could see both Apple and Samsung enter the triple-camera segment.

DJI debunks rumor: Leaked ‘Phantom 5’ was just a custom-built Phantom 4 Pro

Last week, some ‘leaked’ photos and hand-drawn schematics were published online that purported to show an upcoming drone from DJI: a Phantom 5 with interchangeable lens camera and several prime lenses. The rumor was widely reported and the photos looked real enough, but DPReview has learned that those images do not, in fact, show a Phantom 5 at all.

We spoke to DJI, who clarified on the record that the drone in the images above and below is not an unreleased DJI Phantom 5, but a specialized Phantom 4 Pro designed by DJI for an enterprise client—something that it is not at all unusual for DJI to do.

Here’s the full statement:

The Phantom 4 drone with interchangeable lenses sighted in some online publications is not a DJI product for public sale. To clarify, this was a modified Phantom 4 Pro drone designed for an enterprise client to serve specific application needs.

Of course, this doesn’t mean a Phantom 5 isn’t in the works, but that leak from a couple of weeks ago seems to a have been a hoax.

Rumor debunked: Canon and Profoto will both attend Photokina 2018

Flash maker Elinchrom recently revealed that it would skip Photokina 2018, with company CEO Simon Whittle explaining, “…we feel this is a transitional year for photokina and this break will help Elinchrom to analyze and refocus on what is really important for our customers in the coming years.” Starting next year, the event will take place in May instead of September.

On the same day as Elinchrom’s announcement, DIY Photography said it had been hearing rumors that “big brands,” among them Canon and Profoto, may also be skipping Photokina 2018.

As DPR stated last week, claims that Canon would skip the event seemed far-fetched from the beginning. A day later, DIY Photography said it had received word from Photokina director Christoph Menke denouncing the rumors, and today Photokina responded more broadly by publishing a list of brands that will officially be attending—among them Canon and Profoto.

According to the press release, Photokina is “expecting every single exhibitor space in the halls in Cologne to be filled,” and the following brands have “secured their stands” for the event, which starts September 26th:

Rumor: Canon full-frame mirrorless already ‘being used by select pro photographers’

So far, the EOS M5 is the nearest thing Canon has made to a high-end mirrorless camera.

Rumors of a Canon mirrorless full-frame camera are heating up. Just days after our own Canon interview from CP+ 2018 seemed to hint, quite strongly, that a “high-end mirrorless” from Canon is in the works, Canon Rumors is reporting that they have “confirmed from a couple of good sources” that a full-frame mirrorless Canon is indeed being tested by select pros.

The Canon Rumors report, published earlier today, claims that “a full frame mirrorless camera is well into its development cycle,” and is in fact being used by “select Canon pro photographers” in the field. This matches up with what Canon told us during our interview at CP+ 2018. Specifically, the Canon executives we spoke to said:

In accordance with the full lineup strategy, we will be tackling [the mid-range and high-end mirrorless market] going forward.

And when we asked if it was “realistic” to expect a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera within a year, their tongue-in-cheek response was:

That would be nice, wouldn’t it?

Canon Rumors is “very confident we’re going to see something announced before the end of Q1 in 2019,” while other outlets have predicted something for Photokina in September. Either way, as rumors and reports heat up, it seems more and more likely the industry will be getting a major shake-up in early 2019 or late 2018.

The major unanswered question is: what about lenses? Will Canon release a new lens mount with this rumored full-frame mirrorless camera—thereby taking advantage of the shorter flange distance offered by mirrorless—will the new camera be compatible with EF lenses out of the box, or will it be some sort of hybrid arrangement?

When we spoke to Canon, the company said it “can’t simply ignore the [130 million EF lenses] in the market,” but that “we’re considering the technical advancements that are possible” with a new mount. In the end, they didn’t give us anything definitive, encouraging us instead to “let your imagination suggest some possibilities.”

Rumor: DJI Mavic Pro II will sport 1-inch sensor, may arrive in March

When the DJI Mavic Air came out, we pretty much knew right away that it wasn’t the sequel to the Mavic Pro (or Pro Platium) that many had been hoping for. Following in Apple’s nomenclature footsteps, DJI’s Mavic Air is kind of like the MacBook Air—still powerful, but mostly built for extreme portability, not as a followup to the MacBook Pro.

Fortunately for those people who are still waiting for a true Mavic Pro successor, it sounds like you won’t have to wait very long.

According to a new report from DRN, the upcoming DJI Mavic Pro II is already in production, and may see its official announcement as early as March, 2018. What’s more, DRN got its hands on some rumored specs, claiming the Mavic Pro II will have:

  • A 1-inch CMOS sensor with 28mm lens
  • A 4820 mAh battery that will give it 35 minutes of flight time
  • Binocular rear sensors

They’re also expecting it to take design cues from the sleeker Mavic Air, only in a larger package that can carry the bigger sensor and battery.

As with all rumors, nothing is confirmed until DJI says so, but the drone rumor mill should really heat up ahead of any official announcement in March. In the meantime, the folks at Autel might need to get a head start developing their next drone; that Autel EVO that out-specs DJI’s Mavic Pro Platinum… it might not be superior for long.
