Video: Starry time-lapse at the ESA’s Ariane 6 rocket launch site

The European Space Agency (ESA) recently published a stunning time-lapse of the star-filled night sky at the ESA’s Ariane 6 launch site in French Guiana, South America. Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana is preparing for the arrival of Ariane 6, ‘Europe’s next-generation launch vehicle.’

The Ariana 6 rocket will come in two versions depending on mission requirements. The A62 has two strap-on boosters, while the A64 has four. The Ariane 6 is 207′ (63m) tall with a diameter of 18′ (5.4m). The mass of the rocket ranges from 1,170,000-1,900,000 lbs (530,000-860,000kg). Replacing the Ariane 6 launch vehicle, the Ariane 6’s maiden test flight is scheduled for 2022 following several delays.

You can see what a typical Ariane 6 mission might look like in the ESA’s video below. Ariane 62 can launch payloads of approximately 9,920 lbs (4,500kg) into a geostationary orbit and 22,700 lbs (10,300kg) into low Earth orbit. By strapping on an additional two boosters, Ariane 64 can launch payloads of around 25,350 lbs (11,500kg) into geostationary orbit and 45,400 lbs (20,600kg) into low Earth orbit. With a full payload, Ariane 6 weighs about the same as one and a half Airbus A380 passenger airplanes.

The development of Ariane 6 has comprised an industrial network of more than 600 companies in 13 European countries, including 350 small- and medium-sized companies. The development is led by prime contractor ArianeGroup. The Ariane 6 launch facilities in French Guiana, seen in the time-lapse video above, are being prepared by France’s space agency, CNES.

The modular design of Ariane 6 means that it will be suitable for a wide range of missions, including Earth observation, telecommunications, meteorology, science and navigation. Adapters have been developed to allow Ariane 6 to carry multiple small satellites at once, allowing small companies more cost-effective access to the space industry. Canon’s CE-SAT-IB satellite camera destroyed during Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket launch

Two weeks ago, we reported on Canon’s CE-SAT-IB satellite camera, which was set to be launched alongside six other satellites aboard Rocket Labs’ Electron vehicle as part of its ‘Pics or It Didn’t Happen Mission.’ And, well, whoever chose the mission’s name might want to choose something a little less ominous next time, as in keeping with the theme of 2020, it’s been reported all payloads were destroyed during ascent due to a rocket failure.

According to Rocket Lab, its Electron vehicle, which housed Canon’s Earth-imaging camera and six other satellites, failed late in its journey after taking off from Mahia Peninsula on North Island, New Zealand (Te Ika-a-M?ui)

In a Twitter post shared on July 4, Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck apologized to Rocket Lab customers, saying ‘I am incredibly sorry that we failed to deliver our customers’ satellites today. Rest assured we will find the issue, correct it and be back on the pad soon.’

No specific cause for the issue has been shared at this time, but the launch video, which was live-streamed for the world to see (and embedded below), shows the video feed from the Electron rocket cutting out just shy of six minutes into its flight. Not long after, you can hear a Rocket Lab team member say the less-than-inspiring phrase ‘initiating mishap response plan.’

In a press release, Rocket Lab further elaborated on the incident saying ‘Today’s anomaly is a reminder that space launch can be unforgiving […] The launch team operated with professionalism and expertise to implement systems and procedures that ensured the anomaly was managed safely.’

Rocket Lab is already in the process of getting future missions in place and Canon already has its CE-SAT-IIB satellite ready for a Rocket Lab mission later this year. We have contacted Canon for comment on the incident and will update this article accordingly if we receive a response.

NASA photographer Bill Ingalls’ camera melted in fire caused by rocket launch

Last week, a tweeted image of a melted camera belonging to NASA photographer Bill Ingalls caught the Internet’s attention. In a statement clarifying the matter, the space agency explained the story behind the image, saying, “His creativity and efforts to get unique images are well known within the agency and to those who follow it.”

Ingalls has worked as a NASA photographer for 30 years. In its statement published Friday, NASA explained that Ingalls knows where to setup his cameras, and that a grass fire caused by the GRACE-FO launch on May 22 was behind the damage. Though Ingalls had placed two cameras outside of the launch pad safety perimeter, the melted camera was one of four placed within the perimeter.

Speaking with NASA, Ingalls said, “I had six remotes, two outside the launch pad safety perimeter and four inside. Unfortunately, the launch started a grass fire that toasted one of the cameras outside the perimeter.”

Despite the camera casualty, NASA says the memory card within the camera survived the fire. The space agency published a GIF of the fire as it moved toward the camera, which recorded its own demise. NASA says it’ll “likely” display the melted device at its Washington DC headquarters.

Looking up: Sixteen-year-old John Kraus is a rocket launch photographer

Growing up in Satellite Beach, Florida, John Kraus has been watching launches for as long as he can remember. He’s now a photojournalist who covers rocket launches for AmericaSpace.com. Oh, and he’s just sixteen years old. Feel old yet? Keep reading to see more of his images and find out more about him.

How did you get started in photography, and what do you shoot with now?

I decided to start photography randomly in January of 2015. I figured it could be a fun hobby to pick up and learn about. I use a Nikon D7100, but my closeup images of launches are captured with a D3300.

How did you start working as a photojournalist at such a young age?

Since I always watched launches, once I bought my camera, I started photographing them. After almost a year of experience, I was lucky enough to be credentialed under AmericaSpace.com as a media member.

How have you continued to learn as a photographer?

I’ve learned a lot from my photo a day challenge that I’m doing this year. I’m taking a photo every day of the year. That’s it. Take a photo, upload it to Instagram by midnight. So far, I haven’t missed a day. It’s given me a way to be creative daily. Some photos aren’t so good, some are great. It’s a learning experience!

Do you hope to pursue a career in photography?

What have been some of the most memorable launches you’ve photographed?

Both SpaceX landings have been amazing to see. I was able to capture long exposure photographs of each launch. The recent United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy launch in June was spectacular, and very loud.

Ready for takeoff: GoPro records rocket trip into space

While you’re waiting for Space X to get you into orbit, there’s an easier way to enjoy an otherworldly view. A GoPro HERO 4 camera was used to record a UP Aerospace Inc. SL-10 rocket’s travel into space, showing the flight at speeds of up to Mach 5.5 from Earth to an altitude of 120,700m / 396,000ft and back again. The video was recorded on November 6, 2015 during a mission to deploy the Maraia Capsule designed by NASA, and was recently showcased by GoPro on its YouTube channel.

This isn’t the first time GoPro’s action cameras have been used to record space missions. In April 2015, for example, NASA published a pair of videos showing astronauts on a spacewalk, both of which were recorded using the small action cameras. A GoPro was also used to record Felix Baumartner’s ‘Red Bull Stratos,’ a space jump that took place 24 miles above Earth.

These days shots from a flying drone are a dime a dozen – when engagement shoots are being covered from a hovering photographic robot you know that the technology is ubiquitous. It’s getting increasingly hard to impress someone with images or video from drones. So it’s lucky that privately-owned SpaceX happens to own its own rockets because it gives them the ability to capture stunning video, like this launch and landing test of its Falcon 9 Reusable rocket. See video

Rocket Man: Going POV With a Parkour Expert (VIDEOS)

Parkour isn’t quite the sensation it used to be, but there are plenty of urban athletes all over the world still exploring cities by free running, jumping, flipping and climbing. One of England’s parkour champs is James Kingston, a talented expert who films thrilling point-of-view (or POV) videos of his parkour adventures.

Just in case his incredible videos entice any amateurs to try his death-defying style, we’ll just put this cliche saying out there: if you don’t have proper training, don’t try this at home. Or anywhere else. You can get most of the same thrill by watching Kingston’s heart-stopping POV adventures.

Wearing a helmet camera, Kingston takes his viewers on thrilling rides through rooftops, neighborhoods, and beautiful locations. Although he’s been criticized for glamorizing this dangerous sport, Kingston has also received accolades from people who aren’t able to try it out on their own. He gives his viewers a way to fly through the air and perform daring tricks without ever stepping foot away from their computers.

The Rocket Travel Slider

Long time no chat! Hello! I’ve been digging about for products that are currently on my radar that I wanted to tell you about!

I’ve posted previously about Kickstarter stuff, the last time was another product from the same group of folk out of Bend, Oregon. Nice Industries are skipping along a sweet looking trail of products for the dSLR video producer, or even the 4/3rds / mirror-less video producer. The last product, the one I wrote about previously, was called “Aviator Travel Jib” So, this time I wanted to tell you about a complimentary product called “The Rocket – Travel Slider” You might hear people talk about a “Dolly shot” that’s the nice smooth slide shot – left to right, back and forward… It really does add an extra “something” to your film making that you can’t typically get when handheld or on a static tripod.

Have a look at the THE ROCKET – These guys are doing something right – the Kickstarter was already funded less than 24 hours after launch!

If you’re going to the 2013 NAB Show you can see The Rocket Slider in action at booth 12141, and Zeke may even make you a nice cup of tea!

So I have my very own Aviator Travel Jib now and i’ll be working on an article / review for you all [When I get better at film making!] it is a great little product that has added SO much ‘dynamics’ to my current film making. As well as the Canon 5D MK3, I’ve started using the Olympus OM-D (which I’ve fallen in love with!) and the two together are fantastic! – more on that later… Much more! I’m very much looking forward to getting The Rocket and finishing my film project!

The simplicity is what makes it that little bit more epic… You take the bar ends, the rocket sled and stick them in any old bag, your pipe goes wherever and you’re away! I’ve just priced up some extra light galvanised steel pipe here in Melbourne, it’s $ 38 for a 6.5M length – that’s with 2mm walls, so you’re going to be able to get a great dolly shot by cutting that in half and using the center support. Pretty excited about where dSLR cameras are taking independent film making right now, much more accessibility for the regular person (me!) to try this and that with the gear a lot of us already have.

Japan’s Urban Spaceship: The Omiya Rocket Building

Let’s do launch! The shiny, streamlined, sc-fi styled Rocket Building dominates an otherwise unremarkable downtown street near Omiya Station in Saitama, just north of Tokyo, Japan. Home to rental apartments, a cafe, an educational daycare facility and more, the Rocket Building stands out even among Tokyo’s eclectic collection of oddball buildings.

“I’m the urban spaceship, baby, I’ve got speed. I’ve got everything you need!” Well maybe not everything, but the Rocket Building in Sakuragi-cho, Omiya, Saitama – just north of Tokyo, Japan – can certainly be said to have speed even though it hasn’t moved a millimeter since it was completed back in the early 1980s.

The Rocket Building was one of a number of offbeat edifices that sprung up in and around Japan’s major cities as the country’s economic bubble inflated. Low interest rates, reasonable real estate prices and a steady flow of government funds into the construction sector saw projects approved which would normally never see the light of day.

By the mid-1980′s, Japan’s economy began to show signs of overheating. A combination of rising stock prices, increasing land values and a shortage of urban building space proved to be the death knell for one-off projects like the Rocket Building.

A building is a building, however, and in super-dense urban Tokyo no habitable structure goes to waste. As odd as the Rocket Building looks on the outside, its theme park ambiance slips away once one enters the chrome-edged surround of the cavernous front entranceway. We’re not sure if the Rocket Building has a doorman but if it did, he would likely be tempted to greet visitors with a cheery “All aboard!”

The Rocket Building may have originally housed a private museum though those days are long past. These days, the building’s owners lean more to the commercial than the artistic figuring there’s a niche market for tenants who appreciate the allure of living or working in a rocket-shaped building. hey may be onto something: just imagine your very own bachelor “pad” inside this 9-stage, er, 9-story structure!

Tenants renting space in the Rocket Building have changed from time to time. Some, such as the Rocket Nursery, are more than happy to play off their location as a way to distinguish themselves from competitors.

How thrilled must pre-school age kids 6 years old or younger be to find out their school (or rather, a flexible-hours daycare) is located inside a sky-high shining rocket? Curiously, the Rocket Nursery is open 24 hours a day – in space there’s no night or day, it would seem.

The landlords of the Rocket Building currently rent space on an ad-hoc basis with an odd assemblage of businesses rubbing shoulders within the structure’s confines. At one point the tenants included a “conversation cafe” called Leafcup, the Total Beauty College, and occupying the 9th floor something called “Bambitch” which sounds a lot more awesome than it probably is.

Most images of the Rocket Building focus on its easily accessible, street-facing front but the building’s rear offers a heady dose of visual interest as well. Note the gold-toned wall panels that one might think aren’t really necessary and the curious cylindrical structure whose exact purpose isn’t obvious. Chimney, elevator shaft, garbage disposal, tower gantry?

As much as the Rocket Building’s appeal is a function of its colorful neighborhood, the latter also derives benefits from having the former in it’s midst. Grouchy homeowners and worn-down office workers alike can’t help but be cheered by the sight of a golden rocket gleaming warmly over the rooftops, even on cloudy days.

The building’s design is actually quite complex – a pair of scalloped insets on either side of the main entrance allow for open-air balconies with a steel railing facing the street. As well, beneath one of the balconies is an extremely small (though typical for Tokyo) parking space which might possibly hold two small cars or minivans.

It has been suggested that in the years after the Rocket Building opened, the topmost story housed a small rotating observation deck that provided a very limited number of visitors a unique view over Omiya Station and the nearby neighborhood. Whether due to safety concerns, mechanical issues or the preferences of the building’s current tenants, the miniature rooftop upper stage has been fixed in a static orientation for some time.

The Rocket Building isn’t especially tall as urban high-rises go, it just looks that way compared to most of the surrounding homes, shops and mixed-use buildings in West Omiya. The area was already settled and substantially occupied by the time the Rocket Building’s builders applied shovel to soil; this partially explains why the building appears to have been shoe-horned in amongst its neighbors.

Being a “big fish in a small pond” helps the Rocket Building retain some notoriety, as if looking like a spaceship ready to launch isn’t enough. The golden mini-missile capping the building often appears in wide-field photos of the area and curious visitors naturally wonder what’s supporting it – how nice that beneath the topmost rocket is a larger rocket one can enter at their leisure!

What does the future hold for Omiya’s iconic Rocket Building? The structure is aging and the building’s unique design and décor mean replacement parts and panels are either in short supply or are simply non-existent. West Omiya is changing as well, slowly shedding its traditional working class accoutrements and gradually melding into mainstream Tokyo.

Sooner or later, the block or blocks housing the Rocket Building will likely be razed and some massive plaza will rise in its place. For now, though, enjoy the quirky charm of the Rocket Building and appreciate it as a capsule comment, so to speak, of those bright days when building upwards in Tokyo was more than just an expression.

Nikon D90 movie how to: Follow the video to learn how to properly expose for a scene. – Put the camera at iso 200, 400, or 1600 or whichever is needed – Use a small aperture such as F8 – Use a lens with adjustable aperture – Press AE-L/AF-L hold before going to LiveView – Press LiveView, press OK to record, and then adjust the aperture manually until the exposure looks good. You should now have a much better exposed scene by following these steps.
