Australian Nikon ambassador Dale Sharpe, 36, killed in tragic roadside accident

Dale Sharpe, an Australian storm-chaser, landscape photographer and Nikon Ambassador has passed away after a tragic roadside accident while in the United States.

According to The Wichita Eagle, a local paper in Kansas, Sharpe was killed when he was hit by a vehicle after suffering car problems of his own.

The report says Sharpe was traveling northbound on highway K-2 when his vehicle made contact with a deer and ultimately came to a stop in the southbound lane due to the damage not long after midnight on June 20, 2019, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash report.

In an effort to seek safety while making a call for assistance, Sharpe moved to the side of the road. Shortly after, a vehicle traveling southbound attempted to avoid Sharpe’s broken-down vehicle when it swerved off the road and into the same ditch Sharpe had attempted to run to for safety. Sharpe was taken to Harper County Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:14 a.m. local time.

The driver of the vehicle who hit Sharpe was unharmed. A Kansas Highway Patrol spokesperson told The Wichita Eagle that the 45-year-old man driving the vehicle was ‘driving in accordance to the law and will not be charged.’

Sharpe, who was 36 years old, is survived by his wife, Karlie Russell, who served as a partner in their photography business, DK Photography, as well as his daughter, Mia.

In a statement to DPReview, Nikon Inc. said ‘We are deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Dale Sharpe. He was a talented photographer and a valued member of our community. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and all those that he inspired through his work.’

Two separate GoFundMe campaigns (’Bring Dale Home’ and ‘Memorial Fund for Dale Sharpe DK Photography’) have been set up for the Russell family. Per the DK Photography Facebook post, DPReview did not contact anyone to verify the GoFundMe campaigns out of respect for their privacy.

Fruitless: 10 Abandoned Roadside Fruit & Produce Stands

Once vital threads in the fabric of Americana, these abandoned fruit & produce stands no longer entice hungry travelers into making roadside pit stops.

An urban farm in a state whose rivers have been known to catch on fire? It’s more likely than you think: the six-acre Ohio City Farm in Cleveland operates between June and November though the Farm Stand only opens on weekends.

Etsy member GregMurrayPhoto and Flickr users MMW Horticulture Group and LAND studio, respectively, snapped the photos above. Gotta love that eggplant-purple, zombie-proof corrugated facade – all that’s missing is a herd of vegetarian walkers milling about in front. BROOOCCCOLIIII…

Speaking of TWD, the abandoned Michaux Produce stand (and matching flatbed truck) in Goochland County, VA might have served as an alternate filming location had Georgia’s governor not vetoed a certain bill. They could call it “Michonne’s Produce”, harvested with a samurai sword while-u-wait! Kudos to Flickr user Aes D for getting up close and personal with the pleasant yet eerie scene in September of 2015.

Sign of the Times

No sign remains of this Florida roadside produce stand – er, the stand seems to be gone but the sign remains, though not for much longer by the looks of it. Flickr user Dan Optimus Prime (dvn225) captured the sorry signboard standing – barely – just outside Daytona Beach in March of 2013.

Roadside Renaissance: Art Of The Painted Desert Project

Conceived by photographer/activist Chip Thomas, The Painted Desert Project connects urban street artists with communities in the southwest‘s Navajo Nation.

Chip Thomas (above) first set foot in Navajo Nation over 25 years ago when, as a newly-minted doctor, he decided the best way to repay his National Health Service Corps scholarship was by volunteering to serve a community with limited access to healthcare. Decades later, his roots are set deep into the stony desert soil.

Somewhat of a Renaissance Man, Dr. Thomas displays a very different skill set when he “becomes” Jetsonorama – a street artist whose favored medium is blown-up black-and-white photos applied to a range of outdoor structures.

Being as his home base is the Western Agency of the Navajo Nation in Arizona, Thomas’s subjects are the Navajo people and their traditional symbolism. “I’m just trying to reflect the positivity I have been allowed to experience from the people for the past 25 years,” explains Thomas. “It’s like I’m holding a mirror up and saying, ‘Thank you for letting me experience all this.’ And to the youth I’m saying, ‘Learn from this!’” Not corny at all, actually.

Soviet Bus Stops: Surreal Architectural Roadside Wonders

Standing stark against silent desert backdrops like sculptures made for Burning Man, these leftover Soviet structures are actually bus stops scattered throughout one of the most sparsely populated regions on Earth. Photographer Christopher Herwig followed bus routes from Estonia to Armenia to photograph odd little roadside shelters in former Soviet satellite states for a new book.

‘SOVIET BUS STOPS’ chronicles dozens of these entirely unique and surprisingly artistic structures in 157 color photographs, exploring the bus pavilion as its own architectural form. “There is a certain amount of [utilitarianism] here,” reads the foreword by Jonathan Meades. “But it is atypical. The norm is wild going on savage. Just as follies were, in the 18th century, often try-outs for new architectural styles, so may some of these wayward roadside punctuation marks have been structural or aesthetic experiments; they certainly don’t lack grandeur and audacity.”

Herwig first discovered the strange beauty of these huts on a long-distance bike ride from London to St. Petersburg in 2002. Designed by local artists, seemingly without any restrictions from the government providing the money, each one displays a bit of the character of the town in which it stands.

Throughout his journey, which took him to 13 countries and through territories that are rarely traversed by tourists, Herwig reports that he was occasionally accused of being a spy. The photographer scoured maps, Google Earth and traveler’s blogs for clues to find many of the shelters, which appear to be in exceptionally good shape for their age.

Twelve years in the making, the photos were originally published in a limited-edition, sold-out version of the book, which is now available in an expanded, smaller-format trade edition.

Go Somewhere Else: 8 Abandoned Roadside Rest Stops

Rest stops and welcome centers are to highway travel what oases are to desert caravans, with one exception: when an oasis dries up, the camels unload anyway.

European? NOT HERE!

Making a run for the border? Not so fast… this abandoned rest stop on the border between France and Belgium no longer offers a welcome break for weary travelers; one imagines the Wehrmacht was rather put out. Kudos to Flickr user Neomaru for capturing this curious relic of modern architecture in its currently colorful yet sadly forlorn state.

No Rest For The Wicked

We don’t make a habit of ignoring road signs (and neither should you) but in this case we’ll make an exception: the rest stop at milepost 104 on US 41 southbound, about 3 miles north of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, hasn’t existed since some time in the mid-1990s. So then, does the sign advise the next rest stop is 21 miles further down the road or that this is (was) the last rest stop FOR 21 miles? Why not both?

Scott Kuznicki visited the location of this late and unlamented rest stop on October 5, 2002… we don’t know why, but he’s got the photos to prove he (and the rest stop) was/were there. Maybe he just needed an alibi. Anyway, as you can see there’s not much evidence for the rest stop’s existence besides fencing and faded stripes on the road.

The CHiPs Are Down

Rest stops in California are funded and maintained by the state’s Department of Transportation, known as CalTrans. While many rest stops in remote areas were closed relatively recently due to California’s never-ending fiscal crisis, the rest stop whose remnants linger on Highway 99 bit the dust in the early 1980s. It did have one claim to fame while still standing, though: an episode of the popular TV crime drama CHiPs centered around an accidentally abandoned baby left at a rest stop… THIS rest stop.
