Ricoh WG-60 rugged camera adds FlashAir card compatibility

The Ricoh WG-60 is a waterproof camera with solid rugged credentials. It’s waterproof to 14m (45ft), shockproof from 1.8m (11ft) and freezeproof to -10°C (14°F). It has a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 28-140mm equivalent lens, 2.7″ LCD and a built-in LED ring light.

The WG-60 is the replacement to the WG-50 and, from what we can tell, is nearly identical. The only difference appears to be support for FlashAir Wi-Fi SD cards, which is the camera’s only way to connect to mobile devices. If we discover other differences between the WG-60 and its predecessor, we’ll update this article.

The WG-60 will be available next month for £250 and will come in red or black. The camera will not be sold in the U.S.

The superb waterproof design of the WG-60 means the user can easily take pictures outdoors with confidence. Despite a compact lightweight body, the outstanding specifications of the WG-60 means that it outperforms ordinary digital cameras and smartphones in demanding outdoor conditions. It is waterproof to a depth of 14 metres, shockproof against a fall from a height of 1.6 metres and freeze-proof down to temperatures as low as -10°C. It also comes equipped with an outdoor-friendly LCD monitor so you can instantly adjust its brightness to the lighting level in a particular shooting situation.

Main Features

1. Heavy-duty construction for underwater shooting down to 14 metres, for up to two hours.
Featuring a solid, airtight body waterproof down to a depth of 14 metres for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX 8 or JIS Class 8). Shockproof against falls from a height of 1.6 metres,* dustproof (equivalent to IPX 6 or JIS Class 6), freeze-proof to temperatures as low as -10°C, and crush-proof against weights up to 100kgf (kilogram force). ** Its heavy-duty construction ensures that the WG-60 performs superbly and dependably even in harsh, demanding outdoor conditions.

2. Exceptional image quality
The WG-60 comes equipped with a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which delivers excellent high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics and high-speed read-out of image data signals. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine, this image sensor delivers a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with approximately 16.0 effective megapixels. This model also provides advanced image processing functions, made possible by the latest super-resolution technology for sharp, clear, high-resolution images. It also offers such innovative features as Handheld Night Snap mode, which automatically captures several images of the same nighttime scene to produce a single, blur-free composite image.

3. 5X optical zoom lens with a 28mm wide-angle coverage
The WG-60 features a high-performance, five-times optical zoom lens with a focal-length coverage from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent to approx. 28mm to 140mm in the 35mm format) to accommodate a wide range of scenes and subjects, including landscapes. It also provides other convenient shooting functions, such as macro mode to capture dramatic close-up images from a minimum focusing distance of a mere one centimetre. An Intelligent Zoom function extends the zoom range to approximately 36 times (equivalent to 1008mm in the 35mm format) without compromising image quality, for superior telephoto photography and an interval-shooting mode, which comes in handy for fixed-point observation.

4. Six Macro Lights to assist close-up shooting, and a Self-Portrait Assist mode
By selecting the Digital Microscope mode, six LED Macro Lights ideally positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel for macro shooting, allow the WG-60 to provide bright, uniform illumination on a subject. ***The Macro Lights enable the user to clearly see a magnified view of the microscopic world undetectable by the naked eye on the camera’s LCD monitor, and effortlessly capture eye-catching close-up images. In order to minimize camera and subject shake, the Instant Illumination Enhance function allows the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the discharge level of the Macro Lights at the moment of shutter release. The Macro Lights also provide other useful functions, such as a Self-Portrait Assist mode, which uses the blink of an LED lamp to check if the subject’s face is captured within the picture frame, and the LED Lighting mode, which uses the Macro Lights as a lighting device in the dark.
*** When this mode is selected, the image size is fixed at 2.0 megapixels (at 16:9 proportions).

5. Underwater shooting mode
Specifically designed for underwater photography, the Underwater and Underwater Movie shooting modes optimize colour and contrast, based on the data of images actually captured under the water. These modes deliver sharp, true-to-life images by enhancing shades of red, which are lost in underwater photography, while effectively compensating for the loss of contrast caused by the diffusion of light in water. During Underwater mode, the Flash Off + Flash On option, allows the user to capture two images consecutively — with a single shutter release — one without flash and another with flash.

6. Full HD movie recording for extended shooting of high-quality movies
The WG-60 provides Full HD movie recording employing the H.264 recording format. Users can capture high quality extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16:9 proportions) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. To add some creative touches to movie recording, it also features a high-speed camera function**** for slow motion playback of captured movie clips and an interval movie function. A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also on the camera body for simultaneous output of Full HD movie clips and sound to external audio-visual devices.
**** When this function is selected, the recorded size is fixed at 1280 x 720 pixels.

7. Triple anti-shake protection to prevent blurred images in all applications
(1) Pixel Track SR mechanism
When recording still images, this advanced shake-reduction mechanism effectively compensates for camera shake by digitally processing affected images.

(2) Digital SR mode
When the camera detects low-lighting conditions in still-image shooting, this mode automatically raises the sensitivity up to as high as ISO 6400, making it possible to use a higher shutter speed and effectively minimize the adverse effects of camera shake and subject shake when dealing with poor lighting conditions.

(3) Movie SR mode
During movie recording, this mode effectively compensates for the misalignment of images caused by camera shake with exclusive software to produce beautiful, blur-free movie clips.
8. 2.7-inch LCD monitor with the Outdoor View Setting mode
The WG-60 comes equipped 2.7-inch LCD monitor with horizontally extended 16:9 proportions and approximately 230,000 dots. The monitor’s AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimizes annoying glare and reflections for a sharp, clear on-screen image even in bright sunshine during outdoor shooting. It also comes equipped with such convenient features such as the Outdoor View Setting mode, which easily sets the optimum monitor brightness level for a given lighting situation.

9. Other features
· A range of WG-series mount accessories (optional) to accommodate a range of shooting situations
· Compatibility with FlashAirTM wireless LAN SD memory cards
· Two remote control receptors (one in front and another in the back) to widen signal coverage
· Macro stand (included) to maintain a minimum focusing distance of one centimetre to the subject during extended observation and shooting of macro images
· High-speed Face Detection function to capture as many as 32 faces in focus in approximately 0.03 seconds (minimum); Smile Capture function to automatically release the shutter when the subject’s smile is detected

Photokina 2018: First look at new Ricoh GR III

Our new favorite compact? Meet the Ricoh GR III

Ricoh has announced the development of a third model in its popular GR lineup: The forthcoming GR III will feature an updated sensor and redesigned lens. We’re at Photokina, where we took a quick look earlier at an early sample under glass.

The biggest upgrade to the GR III is invisible. The new camera features a 24MP APS-C sensor, which should substantially improve upon the rather old 16MP sensor used in the GR/II. The new sensor brings with it phase-detection autofocus, and in-camera stabilization. Both these changes are potentially of huge value to prospective buyers, and serve as a major differentiator against arguably the GR III’s main competitor, Fujfilm’s X100-series.

Externally, the magnesium alloy-bodied GR III is virtually indistinguishable from its predecessors, the GR and (extremely closely-related) GR II. The 28mm effective focal length of it 18.3mm F2.8 lens is unchanged, but it has been redesigned.

The new lens features six elements in four groups, including two aspheres. The GR/II’s lens was made up of seven elements in five groups, also including two aspherical elements. Beyond an improvement to minimum focusing distance from to 6cm (2.4″) from 10cm (3.9″) we don’t know what the practical effects of this redesign are (the GR/II’s original lens was stunningly sharp) but we’re keen to put it to the test as soon as we can.

Movie shooting has been moved from its old position on the main exposure mode dial, to a button on the left-hand side of the camera. This button can also be configured to activate the GR III’s wireless feature. Notice also the omission of the mechanical flash release switch, which was featured on the GR/II. The GR III does not include a built-in flash.

Sorry for the poor quality of this image, which was (obviously) shot through perspex, and against powerful spotlights. Hopefully it shows you what you need to know. From behind, the biggest difference to the GR III compared to its predecessors appears to be a larger LCD, but in fact this is partially an illusion. The GR III’s screen is now 3:2 aspect ratio (as opposed to 4:3) but the diagonal length is the same and resolution (1.03 million dots) is unchanged compared to its predecessor.

You might also notice that the GR/II’s AE/AFL / AF-C switch has been deleted in the new model – likewise the +/- toggle that used to live on the upper-right corner of the thumb grip. This is a shame, but the GR III does gain a rear control dial around the 4-way pad, and from the labeling it looks like the rear ‘ADJ’ jog switch can be used for quick exposure compensation.

From the top, the simplified exposure mode dial looks noticeably less cluttered than the older GR/II. Movie mode has gone, but so has the auto-everything ‘green’ camera mode, and TAv. Instead, we have the traditional PASM plus three user-configurable settings. The front control dial and trademark Ricoh pill-shaped shutter button are unchanged.

That’s it! At least for now. This camera was firmly behind glass but as soon as we can get our holds on a working sample, we’ll be posting a lot more about the GR III, which is already looking like it might become our new favorite compact.

Ricoh announces development of long-awaited GR III

Ricoh has announced the development of its new GR III, a significant update to the GR and GR II. The camera gains sensor-shift image stabilization and on-sensor phase detection as part of an updated 24MP sensor. The camera’s 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens has also been redesigned and a touchscreen added for the first time.

The GR III’s sensor can now shift in three axes to compensate for camera shake and, in common with Ricoh’s Pentax DSLRs, this shake can simulate the effect of having an anti-aliasing filter.

Since the stabilization is done at the sensor level, we suspect the lens has been redesigned to boost focus speed. On-sensor phase detection underpins a hybrid phase- and contrast-detection system which, combined with a new processor and the new lens will, we hope, make the autofocus performance more competitive.

The redesigned 28mm equiv. F2.8 lens will have six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements. The minimum focus distance has improved to 6cm (2.4″) from 10cm (3.9″). The built-in 2-stop ND filter from the GR/GR II remains. The GR III can record 1080/60p video, up from 1080/30p on its predecessors.

From the front at least, the design is unchanged, though preliminary specs say that the III isn’t quite as wide as the I and II. We’ve yet to see the back of the camera but we do know that the 3″ LCD is now touch-enabled. The GR III has a USB-C socket, which the company says can be used for video output. Wireless functionality continues to be offered through Wi-Fi only: no Bluetooth here.

The GR III will be available in early 2019 at price to be determined later.

LONDON 25 SEPTEMBER 2018 – RICOH COMPANY, LTD. and RICOH IMAGING EUROPE, S.A.S. are pleased to announce a preview showing of the RICOH GRIII camera at Photokina 2018 — the world’s largest, full-scale trade fair of photographic and imaging products, to be held from September 26 to 29 in Cologne, Germany. The new camera has been in the process of development as the latest model of the RICOH GR series, which features a line-up of high-end digital compact cameras combining exceptional image quality with a compact, lightweight body ideal for snapshot photography.

Over a history of more than 20 years, the RICOH GR series has always kept its basic concept of optimising the essential values of a camera — high image quality, snapshot capability and portability — while at the same time making the changes and refinements needed to meet emerging needs. Because of this, GR-series models have been preferred by a great many photographers, particularly professionals and highly experienced amateurs.

Currently under development, the RICOH GRIII inherits the basic GR-series concept, but it incorporates totally new devices in its main components, including a newly designed lens, a new image sensor, and a new imaging engine. These are designed to further upgrade image quality, strengthen many of the functions and improve the user interface.

Designed to be the ultimate snapshot camera, the RICOH GR II is a totally new breed of GR camera, one that will give the user new and different creative possibilities. We hope Photokina 2018 visitors will enjoy their first look at this new-generation GR-series model.

Ricoh releases SDK for Pentax cameras, opening the door to 3rd party remote control apps

Ricoh has released a software development kit (SDK) for Pentax cameras that allows third-party developers to create mobile and desktop apps that can control the camera remotely via USB cable or Wi-Fi.

The wireless package is available for Android and iOS. The USB-version can be downloaded for Microsoft .NET Framework and for C++ (Linux, Windows or MacOS). Both variants offer functions for controlling Pentax’s DSLRs and medium format cameras remotely, including photo and video capture, live view and adjustment of camera settings.

The SDK should allow for straightforward development of sophisticated remote control apps and other, more specialized, camera software, without any need for reverse engineering.

Ricoh interview: “The development of the K-series is our first priority”

Pictured is Mr. Takashi Arai, one of several Ricoh executives we sat down with. Mr. Arai represents the Product Planning Department, within the Product Development Center of Ricoh’s Smart Vision Business Group.

Recently we visited the 2018 CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan and booked an in-depth interview with several executives from Ricoh. Among the topics covered were the company’s new K-1 Mark II, as well as the future of both the GR series and 360 imaging with the Theta line.

The following interview has been edited slightly for clarity and flow.


What is your ILC strategy for your next generation of products?

We have lots of requests for lenses, especially from K-1 users. They want more lenses that match the higher resolution of the K-1, so that’s one objective which we would like to implement.

As you may know, we will be releasing the 50mm F1.4 SDM AW this Spring, although we cannot specify the exact date. We also have the new 11-18mm F2.8 lens for APS-C, so we’re not only focusing on full-frame. We want to enlarge [the lens selection for] both formats.

What kind of customers are buying the K1/II and KP?

Especially for the K-1, customers who are looking for higher resolution in the field of landscape photography and [appreciate] our tough body construction and weather and dust resistance. Lots of customers who really use this camera in the field are very fond of the new K-1 series.

Will we ever see another Ricoh / Pentax mirrorless camera, such as the K-01?

The Pentax K-01 was a mirrorless camera that used the full-depth Pentax K-mount, allowing full compatibility with existing Pentax lenses. While image quality was great, the camera was bulky, and there were some performance and autofocus shortcomings.

Our resources for research and development are limited and we are more focused on the development of K-series bodies and lenses. That is our first priority, and why we are currently not too involved in the development of other smaller cameras.

Speaking of smaller cameras, our readers really want a GR III – is this something you’re working on?

Good question. Although we don’t know whether it will be called ‘GR III’ or not, the study for the development of the next GR is already ongoing. We cannot say when, and how exactly it will be, but the next GR will come someday.

What is your strategy for medium-format? How has the market changed since Hasselblad and Fujifilm entered at the consumer end?

Our strategy has not really changed. The 645Z is a DSLR, a reflex camera, and the advantage of a reflex camera is that what you see is what you get [through the optical viewfinder]. On top of that, the 645Z can use Live View, so it has the advantage of having both options. We think that it’s a strong point that our competitors don’t have, and we’ll continue to develop the possibilities of what we can do with reflex cameras.

How do you think 360-degree imaging will evolve in the coming years?

In terms of resolution, we think that it’s not yet enough and should be better. The market is expanding, but still, the current user of the Theta 360 camera is more of a ‘gadget lover.’ We want to expand the customer profile from that specific type of user to more generic users.

Do you see any development in, say, the Theta’s form factor as a way to reach other users?

Ricoh’s Theta V uses the same sensors and lenses as the older Theta S, but offers improved image quality thanks to an updated processor.

This form factor is iconic for the Theta. We think it’s important. On the other hand, if there is demand, we would like flexibly to think about any other possibilities, even for other form factors.

What else are Theta users asking for?

They’re asking for better quality of stitching, and since the camera has internal memory, there have been requests to have expandable memory. In order to respond to that kind of request, we have just released a firmware that allows the Theta V to connect to external memory using the USB port.

Photographers are interested in creating pictures [using techniques] such as composition, and [with the total 360-degree image], there is no creativity from this perspective.

From a marketing point of view, I don’t think many photo enthusiasts who are reading your articles have much interest in 360 cameras like the Theta, unfortunately. That’s because with this camera, we can take an image of all 360 degrees. But photographers are interested in creating pictures [using techniques] such as composition, and [with the total 360-degree image], there is no creativity from this perspective.

But if we capture whole [360-degree] images, we can edit those images with photo applications such as Theta+. And with that application software, photo enthusiasts can [selectively] create their own images and reflect their own sensibility. So we have to do more promotion to photo enthusiasts that use various types of editing applications.

Will we see an updated APS-C flagship camera in the future?

For the flagship APS-C model, we have just started to develop that. It’ll be the successor of the K-3 II and will be an evolution of the K-3 series.

The Pentax K-3 II was released in 2015, and now that Pentax has brought the full-frame K-1 II to market, they are beginning development on the next APS-C flagship.

How did feedback from K-1 owners feed into the planning for the K-1 II?

Feedback, especially from K-1 owners, is more focused on the upgrade services.

Existing K-1 users will be able to update their cameras for a fee – will there be any functional differences remaining between the two models after this service?

Once a user upgrades the K-1 to K-1 II, there will be no difference. Perhaps some K-1 users think it’s more prestigious to have the ‘II’ on the front.


Editor’s Note:

Pentax has a reputation for building affordable, capable and rugged DSLRs, and judging from our conversation with Mr. Arai and his colleagues, it appears as though parent company Ricoh is planning on staying the course in this regard. And while the renewed focus on updating their K-Mount lens lineup is encouraging, it must be said that the continued evolution of competitors’ mirrorless camera offerings has Pentax’s DSLR-only lineup looking a little staid.

But perhaps that’s just to be expected. After all, Ricoh is a smaller camera company, and must be highly strategic in where it invests its R&D money. This prioritization is clear in the discussion of the 645Z compared to newer mirrorless options. Since the 645Z has an optical viewfinder while still offering competitive image quality, it remains appreciably distinct from Fujifilm’s and Hasselblad’s offerings. Therefore the company is choosing to narrow its development focus to a new flagship APS-C DSLR, which is likely what more users are asking for anyway.

The confirmation that a new Ricoh GR is coming is downright exciting

Thankfully though, lenses and DSLRs aren’t all that’s in the works at Ricoh-Pentax. The confirmation that a new Ricoh GR is coming – even if all we know is that it’s coming someday – is exciting. In the age of ever-more-capable smartphones whose lenses are of a similar focal length, Ricoh’s continued development of the photographer-focused GR series shows an admirable commitment to their users and fans.

Last but not least is the Theta series. Ricoh’s newest Theta V is an impressive evolution of the previous ‘S’ model, improving image quality and features through better processing and software. The company still feels it has room to grow, not only in terms of image quality, but also mass-market appeal. It’s interesting hearing the executives’ take on the creativity (or lack thereof) of using 360 cameras, and it’ll be even more interesting to see how they continue to evolve the platform and editing software to get more Thetas into the hands of more photographers, and not just ‘gadget lovers.’

Ricoh will let Pentax K-1 owners update their cameras to a Mark II for $550

For a limited time this summer, current Pentax K-1 owners will be able to send their cameras in for service, essentially upgrading them to a Mark II. The service will include a main circuit board swap, and the ‘SR’ logo on the front of the camera will be replaced with a Mark II logo. The upgraded circuit board will add all of the features introduced in the Mark II, such as shooting at up to ISO 819,200 and an updated Pixel Shift mode.

The K-1 upgrade service will cost $ 550 US / $ 690 CAD and will be offered from May 21, 2018 to September 30, 2018.

We do not yet have details of the price or timeframe for upgrading in other regions but we’re told it should be available and we’ll post detailed when we have them.

Ricoh announces an upgrade service for current PENTAX K-1 camera owners

WEST CALDWELL, NJ, February 21, 2018?In conjunction with the announcement of the new PENTAX K-1 Mark II 35mm full-frame digital SLR (DSLR) camera, Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation today announced an upgrade service for current PENTAX K-1 owners.

The program allows current PENTAX K-1 owners to upgrade their current camera to receive the advanced functions of the new PENTAX K-1 Mark II.

Here is an overview of the upgrade service:

– The upgrade service will be available for a limited time, from May 21, 2018 – September 30, 2018- Upgrade cost: $ 550USD / $ 690 CAD- Cameras will need to be shipped to Precision Camera (US) and Sun Camera (Canada)

The upgrade entails replacing the PENTAX K-1’s main circuit board to add new functions featured in the new PENTAX K-1 Mark II camera. Additionally, the current “SR” logo on the PENTAX K-1 will be replaced with the new PENTAX K-1 Mark II logo.

Ricoh courts developers with plug-in program for the Theta V 360 camera

Ricoh has just announced a so-called Partner Program for the 360° Ricoh Theta V. Taking advantage of the fact that the Theta V runs the Android operating system, Ricoh is setting up a program that will allow developers to create plug-ins specifically tailored to the camera.

The idea is actually kind of brilliant, as DPReview’s own Dale Baskin explains:

This is interesting because most consumer-grade 360° cameras really don’t do anything unique. What makes them useful is the software (which is why I really liked the Rylo). I think Ricoh is smart to open their platform up to developers as someone may come up with a really interesting feature that could potentially drive sales of the hardware.

What we’re not clear on is to what degree developers will be able to create features from scratch, given that Ricoh uses the word “plug-in” to describe what they’ll be creating. The Partner Program graphic Ricoh released isn’t much help in that department either:

“Based on the Android operating system, the RICOH THETA V provides a user-friendly way for third-parties to not only create apps and software that extend and enhance the capabilities of 360-degree imaging but also new features and functionality for the camera itself,” reads Ricoh’s announcement. “These can include customized capabilities that enhance the RICOH THETA V’s use for specialty applications and in vertical markets.”

The first step is to give developers access to the Theta V API and SDK. And once the apps and plug-ins start flowing, Ricoh will make them available for download through “an online RICOH THETA V partner marketplace where plug-ins can be uploaded and shared.”

We consider this a step in the right direction for Ricoh, and a good reason to keep an eye on the Theta V in the weeks and months to come. The Partner Program is set to launch in Spring of 2018, at which point Ricoh hopes the Theta V will become “a constantly evolving product.”

LAS VEGAS (CES 2018, South Plaza, Booth #64704), January 8, 2018 – Ricoh today announced the RICOH THETA V Partner Program, which will launch in spring 2018.

The new program will support third-party developers interested in creating their own Android™-based plug-ins for the RICOH THETA V, the top-of-the-line Ricoh 360-degree camera capable of capturing fully-spherical photos and 4K video. The program will be featured at CES 2018, where attendees will be able to get a hands on experience creating their own plug-in, resulting in the creation of a new feature for the RICOH THETA V camera.

Based on the Android operating system, the RICOH THETA V provides a user-friendly way for third-parties to not only create apps and software that extend and enhance the capabilities of 360-degree imaging but also new features and functionality for the camera itself. These can include customized capabilities that enhance the RICOH THETA V’s use for specialty applications and in vertical markets. As part of the program, Ricoh is making available the RICOH THETA V’s application program interface (API) and software development kit (SDK) and will provide tools and guidance to support plug-in development. It will also open an online RICOH THETA V partner marketplace, where plug-ins can be uploaded and shared.

A unique plug-in preinstalled in the RICOH THETA V enables “Remote Playback,”*1 which makes it possible, using a compatible wireless display adapter, to mirror playback of 360-degree still images and video data stored on the camera on a large screen monitor.

“By opening the platform for application development, we are enabling the RICOH THETA V to be a constantly evolving product. For this reason, we are very excited about the new partner program,” said Wataru Ohtani, Corporate Associate Vice President and General Manager of Smart Vision Business Group, Ricoh Company Ltd. “The RICOH THETA V Plug-in Partner Program will enable third-party companies and developers to create custom features and services. When launched in 2013, the RICOH THETA was the world’s first 360-degree*2, single-shot camera, enabling users to express themselves in new and unique ways. 360-degree still photos and videos redefined photography by giving the viewer the ability to control what he or she sees in a scene. In addition, the resulting 360-degree images were easily shared with others, allowing them to virtually experience a scene as if they were there.

Today, the RICOH THETA cameras are being used for a broad range of consumer and business applications, ranging from documenting vacation memories to photojournalism, law enforcement, real estate listings and virtual tours, and much more.

Ricoh announces new lenses for both APS-C and full-frame Pentax cameras

The two lenses Ricoh has announced today are part of the company’s Star-series line of high-performance lenses, being designed from the ground up for use with higher megapixel DSLR camera bodies.

Let’s start with the HD Pentax-DA* 11-18mm F2.8. Designed for crop-sensor cameras such as the Pentax KP, K70 and K-3 II, it offers an equivalent focal range of 17-27.5mm with a constant F2.8 aperture. Pricing has yet to be disclosed, and you have a bit of a wait if you’re interested in this lens; availability is scheduled for the summer of 2018.

Up next will be of particular interest to Pentax K-1 users. The HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW is designed for full-frame image sensors, and is the first new prime lens Ricoh’s announced for the K-1 since that camera was released. To go with the K-1’s rugged design, the FA* 50mm F1.4 comes with all-weather construction, and also a newly developed supersonic direct-drive autofocus motor for both faster and quieter AF operation. The FA* 50mm F1.4’s pricing is also unavailable, though it’s scheduled to be released a little sooner in the spring of 2018.

Ricoh launches Pentax K-1 Limited Silver Edition

Pentax has made a tradition of launching silver-colored limited edition models of its DSLR line-up, and today parent company Ricoh has done just that, announcing a special edition of the Pentax K-1 36MP full-frame DSLR.

The silver K-1 is limited to 2,000 units worldwide, and features a high-grade silver-color coating on the camera body and battery grip to match the lineup of silver Pentax FA Limited lenses. There is also a limited edition metal hot shoe cover with logo, and the package includes a battery grip and two batteries. All the pieces come wrapped up in an exclusively designed product box.

The Pentax K-1 Limited Silver Edition will be available in mid-September. In the UK the recommended retail price is £2,150 (approximately $ 2755); no information on US pricing has been released yet.

Report: Ricoh announcing cost cuts in face of crisis

According to a report by Nikkei Ricoh is facing its biggest crisis ever and will have to cut costs in order to survive. Ricoh’s Imaging and Solutions division, which predominantly produces printers and accounts for 90% of Ricoh’s consolidated sales has been struggling the most. Nikkei reports that ‘Ricoh is staring at huge losses as the market for multifunctional printers, Ricoh’s cash cow, evaporates and its global sales network racks up high costs.’

In light of this situation Ricoh’s new President and CEO, Yoshinori Yamashita, has set a target of reducing costs by 100 billion yen ($ 912 million) through March 2020. He is also quoted as saying that the company’s new policy is to rid itself of the ’emphasis on market share above all else.’

According to the report the lion’s share of the cost cuts will be realized in Ricoh’s global sales and services network which comprises of more than two-thirds of the company’s 100,000 global employees. At this point it is not clear if and how Ricoh’s imaging brands, such as Pentax, the Theta 360 degree cameras or the R Development kit live-streaming VR camera will be impacted by the cost reductions. When Nikkei reported earlier this spring that Ricoh was considering leaving the camera business, Ricoh denied that it was considering such a move.
