Canon RF mount cameras EOS RP

Canon is rumored to have seven new RF-mount cameras in the works, including an APS-C model, a high-megapixel model, a niche professional model, and an inexpensive model that will cost less than $ 1000 USD.

This latest round of Canon information comes from Canon Rumors, who explains that they “have attempted to piece together what is coming for the RF-mount camera lineup,” and that the information stems from “multiple known and anonymous sources.”

These new bodies will presumably debut over 2021 and 2022, and Canon Rumors specifically asserts that we will not see any new cameras drop in the last few months of this year. Instead, the EOS R camera lineup will begin to heat up in the first half of 2021; that’s when we can start looking forward to a new batch of powerful Canon models. 

So what, specifically, can we expect?

First, there are a few cameras that have been rumored for months, if not longer:

  • A high-resolution, full-frame mirrorless model, one likely designed for serious landscape and commercial photographers and poised to compete against the Sony a7R IV. Canon Rumors explains that this may be an “R5 body with ‘twice the resolution;’” as the EOS R5 is a respectable 45 MP, that would make any high-megapixel EOS R5 at least 60 MP, but probably more in the 75 to 90 range.
  • A pro-level camera designed for sports and action photographers in the style of the Canon 1D X Mark III. This camera should offer blazing-fast shooting speeds, class-leading autofocus, and a rugged build.
  • An APS-C RF-mount model, one that will potentially cater to photographers looking for Canon 7D-like shooting capabilities in a mirrorless body. 

There are also two RF-mount cinema cameras on the docket: the Cinema EOS C90 and the Cinema EOS C50. Both of these bodies are designed for videographers but use RF-mount lenses.

Canon Rumors also reports several additional upcoming models, including an “entry-level camera to replace the EOS RP,” which “will be cheaper than the current EOS RP camera body.” Since the EOS RP is currently $ 999 USD, you can expect a sub-$ 1000 USD price tag (and potentially one that’s several hundred dollars lower!). Note that this will still be a full-frame model, so if you’re looking to break into the full-frame mirrorless world but have balked at the prices thus far, this EOS RP replacement could be exactly what you’re after.

Finally, Canon Rumors predicts a model above the future sub-$ 1000 camera but below the EOS R6 in price (so somewhere in the $ 800 USD to $ 2500 USD range). Note that the Canon EOS R currently slots between the EOS RP and EOS R6, but Canon Rumors claims that the new camera is not a direct EOS R replacement. 

Regardless, we’ve got quite a lot to look forward to over the next couple of years (not to mention Canon’s RF lens lineup, which should grow substantially). So keep an eye out for further news on these Canon RF-mount cameras.

Canon’s 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM is the first super-zoom for RF-mount

Canon’s RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM is the company’s first super-zoom lens for the RF-mount. It’s not the fastest lens in the lineup, but it’s certainly the most versatile RF optic for sports and wildlife photography. The lens’s IS system can reduce camera shake by up to five stops, and there are three IS modes to choose from: standard, panning or active during exposure. When paired with the in-body image stabilization systems of the EOS R5 / R6 bodies, the system is capable of around six EV of total stabilization.

Optically the lens comprises 20 elements in 14 groups. Six elements are ‘UD’ (ultra low dispersion) while one is ‘Super UD’. These elements help reduce chromatic aberrations. The two focus groups are driven by their own Nano USM motor for fast and silent autofocus. The lens extends while zooming, and the torque can be adjusted, or the zoom ring locked. Even with the extension of the lens, Canon claims that it is well-sealed against dust and moisture.

The RF 100-500mm lens offers a maximum magnification ratio of 0.12x and 0.33x at its wide and telephoto ends, respectively. Nine aperture blades help retain circular out-of-focus highlights as you stop the lens down. The lens accepts 77mm filters and weighs a fairly substantial 1365g (3lbs).

The 100-500mm is compatible with Canon’s new RF 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, though the lens must be set to 300mm or longer before one can be attached. A physical hard stop prevents the user from accidentally zooming out past 300mm with these teleconverters.

The 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM will be available in September for $ 2699.

Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6
Both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras have the ability to capture the action of a variety of fast-moving subjects with impressive accuracy and speed. When using the mechanical shutter, each can shoot up to 12 fps and up to 20 fps when using the completely silent shutter. Both cameras are the first to be outfitted with Canon’s advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II which utilizes up to approximately100 percent coverage of the AF area and EOS iTR AF X incorporating AF tracking algorithms using deep learning technology and enhanced readout speed of the CMOS sensor and processing speed thanks to the DIGIC X image processor. The 1,053 automatically selected AF Zones are made even more potent by the ability to detect the human eye, face or head as well as the eye, face or body of animals such as dogs, cats and even birds. Adding to the feature set is the 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilizer, having coordinated control with Optical Image Stabilizer in IS equipped RF lenses. This provides up to 8 stops of shake correction, a feature that many creators have long asked for from Canon. Both the EOS R5 and R6 cameras come with a new LP-E6NH battery with a higher capacity than the previous model.

As the new flagship model in the EOS R series lineup, the EOS R5 camera has features that pack a punch for a variety of users who create both still and video content. It has a powerful 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and is driven by the speedy DIGIC X image processor, giving wide dynamic range as well as boasting an ISO range of 100-51,200 that is expandable up to 102,400. In a camera full of eye-popping features, one that really stands out is the ability to record uncropped 8K RAW internal video recording up to 29.97 fps and 8K internal video recording up to 29.97 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). The camera can also record 4K internal video recording up to 119.88 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). External recording in 4K is also available up to 59.94 fps. When in DCI modes, the 8K and 4K video recording is uncropped and Dual Pixel CMOS AF II is available in all 8K and 4K recording modes. Additional features of the EOS R5 camera include:

The EOS R6 camera is well-equipped with a host of new features to push the limits of creativity for imaging enthusiasts. The combination of the EOS-1D X Mark III based 20.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and the DIGIC X image processor produces an ISO range of 100-102,400 and is expandable to 204,800. Internal video recording at 4K is capable up to 59.94 fps or 1080p up to 119.88 fps in 10 bit 4:2:2 Canon Log(H.265) or HDR PQ(H.265). The camera also features a built-in 0.5-inch OLED EVF with approximately 3.69 million dots and a 119.88 fps refresh ratevi. Additional features of the EOS R6 camera include:

Battery Accessory
The optional BG-R10 battery grip accessory will be available for both the EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras. The BG-R10 accommodates up to two batteries and is compatible with the new LP-E6NH, LP-E6N and LP-E6 batteries. The convenient BG-R10 grip accessory can also improve handling for users while capturing portrait photography.

Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM
The Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM is a high-performance and versatile super-telephoto zoom lens that will find its way into the bags of many photographers. The compact and lightweight lens features optical image stabilization of up to five stops* of shake correction with three different IS modes, including standard, panning and during exposure only. Two Nano USM motors are at the heart of this lens and provide users with high-speed, smooth and quiet auto focus with a minimum focusing distance of three feet. Additional features of the Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM include:

Canon RF600mm and 800mm F11 IS STM
The Canon RF600mm and RF800mm F11 IS STM lenses are the first fixed focal length super-telephoto RF lenses and are incredibly compact and lightweight. The portability of the new lenses is made even greater due to the ability for the lens barrel to retract and lock in place when the lenses are stowed away and not in use. Diffractive Optics technology helps to reduce the necessary number of lenses and greatly diminish the cost of the lenses, making them affordable for a broader group of photographers. Additional features of the Canon RF600mm and RF800mm F11 IS STM lenses include:

  • Lightweight – the RF600mm weighs approximately 2.05lb and the RF800mm weighs approximately 2.78lb, respectively
  • Compact size, RF600mm measures approximately 7.85inch and RF800mm with measures approximately 11.09inch when retracted, respectively

RF Lens Extenders

Sigma rumored to be ‘actively working on’ RF-mount lens road map for 2020 announcement

According to a report from Canon Rumors, Sigma is ‘actively working on an RF-mount lens roadmap’ and is expected to announce its plans sometime in ‘early 2020.’

Canon Rumors’ report, which comes from an unnamed source, goes on to say that distributors have received early information regarding Sigma’s plans, but no specific information regarding potential lenses or launch dates was divulged.

Canon Rumors only ranked this rumor a ‘[CR2]’ (with [CR1] being very unlikely to happen and [CR3] being most likely to happen), so while it’s down the middle in validity it’s worth taking with a grain of salt. Still though, Canon Rumors suspects the announcement would be made ahead of CP+ in February if it were to be made at all.

Sigma offers nearly all of its EF-mount Global Vision Lenses for Nikon’s F-mount as well, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if this purported lens roadmap from Sigma would also apply to Nikon’s Z-mount cameras too, considering the similarities in mount designs. However, much like the roadmap itself, this is purely speculation.

Four RF-mount lenses kick off Canon’s new full-frame mirrorless system

Canon’s first full-frame mount in more than 30 years is here, in the shape of the RF-mount. Featuring the same diameter as the venerable EF-mount but with a much shorter flange back distance, RF is designed from the ground up for mirrorless cameras. It’s still early days, but four lenses have been unveiled alongside the consumer-grade EOS R, providing a tantalizing glimpse into Canon’s future ambitions.

Today sees the unveiling of the Canon RF 28-70mm F2L USM, RF 50mm F1.2L USM (pictured below), RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM and RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM. This quartet covers common focal lengths from 24mm to 105mm and includes an exceptionally fast aperture zoom lens, a macro and – in a throwback to the early days of the EF system in the late 1980s – a flagship fast 50mm (shown below on the EOS R).

Perhaps the most interesting of the four new lenses is the 28-70mm F2, which weighs in at a very substantial 1430g (3.15lbs) – a 77% weight increase compared to the wider but slower EF 24-70mm F2.8 II. Boasting 19 elements in 13 groups, the 28-70mm F2 is a large lens, with a determinedly non-standard front filter diameter of 95mm. The RF 24-105mm F4 appears somewhat more conventional, weighing in at a much more manageable 700g (1.5lb) and featuring a standard filter thread of 77mm. It’s no surprise that this is the lens that Canon is kitting with the EOS R at launch.

The RF 24-105 F4L IS USM has been designed to be video-friendly, with minimal focus breathing, a fast, silent ‘Nano USM’ focus motor and the ability to control its aperture in 1/8th EV steps.

The RF 50mm F1.2 looks to be a pretty substantial chunk of glass, featuring 15 elements in nine groups, and weighing 950g (2.1lb). Meanwhile the lightweight (305g, 0.7lb) RF 35mm F1.8 Macro covers both a useful focal length, and offers a handy 0.5X magnification macro capability. Considering its comparatively smaller size and lighter weight, the RF 35mm F1.8 looks like it could be a very attractive walk-around prime for the small and light EOS R.

The EF-RF adapters will allow the millions of existing EF lenses in circulation to be used “without compromise”

In addition to the four new lenses, Canon has also introduced three EF to RF adapters. The most basic is a simple mount converter, with an additional two adapters which add a customizable control ring (to match the clicking, customizable control rings on native RF lenses), and a tray for drop-in filters, respectively. The drop-in filter adapter makes it possible to add a Vari ND or circular polarizer to all lenses, including the traditionally awkward super-wides.

Canon promises that the EF-RF adapters will allow the millions of existing EF lenses in circulation to be used “without compromise” on the new EOS R and future RF-mount cameras.

The RF 28-70mm F2L USM will cost $ 2,999 and will be available in December. The RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM will also be available in December for $ 1099 ($ 3399 as a kit with the EOS R). The RF 50mm F1.2L USM will cost $ 2,299 and will start shipping next month, while the RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM will cost $ 499 and will be available in December. All three of the ‘L’ lenses are weather-sealed.

The four new RF lenses are built around Canon’s new RF mount, which features a large 54mm diameter and shorter back focus distance than on current EOS DSLR cameras. The new RF mount enables new possibilities in optical design and lens formulation, allowing for faster and lighter lenses with higher performing optics.

The four new lenses, the Canon RF 28-70mm F2 L USM, RF 50mm F1.2 L USM, RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM and RF 35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM capitalize on the robust optic foundation of Canon’s new EOS R system. The design behind Canon’s new EOS R camera and RF lens system started with the concept of the optimal rear lens element diameter and shorter distance (back focus) for a Full-Frame image sensor.

New Canon RF Series Lenses

Three of the newly announced Canon RF lenses are counted among Canon’s top-of-the-line L-series optics; incorporating rugged, dust and water-resistant construction. All four new RF lenses feature a customizable control ring that allows photographers to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture or ISO.

The Canon RF 28-70mm F2 L USM lens, the world’s first standard zoom lens with an f/2 aperture is excellent for capturing landscapes, weddings and portraits with its large aperture for stunning bokeh. Initial testing within Canon has shown this new lens to produce better optical image quality and sharpness over similar focal length EF-series lenses, including the extremely popular and highly regarded EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM.

A portrait photographer’s must-have, the Canon RF 50mm F1.2 L USM lens sports an ultra large-diameter f/1.2 aperture and Canon’s Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology to dramatically reduce flares and ghosting. This amazing new lens is capable of rendering subjects life-size on the full-frame sensor with its minimum focusing distance of only 0.59 inches.

Photographers seeking an all-around utility lens for the new EOS R camera system need to look no further than the Canon RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens. Coming in nine percent shorter in length than the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM, this compact lens employs a CIPA standard of 5 stops of IS and is equipped with NANO USM technology, the first L-series lens with the technology. This small chip-shaped ultrasonic motor is engineered to help deliver high-speed, smooth, precise and near-silent operation, plus full-time manual focus (when using one-shot AF).

A fast, wide-angle single focus lens, the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM lens is an excellent option for photographers looking for an affordable compact lens. Featuring a maximum shooting magnification of 0.5x, the lens can easily shoot macro photography of subjects such as flowers, food and even insects. The lens also utilizes a CIPA standard of 5 stops of IS and is compatible with Hybrid IS, compensating for both angular and shift camera shake.

Enhanced Capabilities for Canon EF Lenses

Thanks to its large lens mount design, Canon’s new EOS R series camera system delivers new capabilities in both design and function, but for existing Canon lens owners it does something incredible. It enhances the capabilities of existing EF and EF-S lenses with full compatibility and in some cases, enhanced functionality when paired with one of three RF mount adapters.

Canon lenses are historically top-rated, and the Company is looking to help customers gain even more value in their investment with three new RF mount adapters.

The Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is a standard adapter that provides full compatibility with EF lenses. Autofocus, metadata, and Optical Image Stabilization on EF lenses all continue to work seamlessly with the new EOS R camera through this adapter.
The Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R continues full EF lens compatibility with the addition of a customizable control ring. Functions that can be assigned and adjusted by the control ring include aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed and exposure compensation.
In addition to full EF lens compatibility, the Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R allows for lens filters to be used behind any EF lens and help photographers conveniently utilize variable ND and circular polarizing filters with any EF lens.

New Speedlite Series

Canon is also introducing a new compact and lightweight Speedlite, the EL-100. Designed for photographers who are just beginning to use an external flash or are in need of a secondary unit, the new Speedlite delivers both soft and natural lighting reproduction. In addition, the EL-100 can rotate upwards and to the left and right enabling photographers to bounce the flash off of nearby ceilings, walls or surfaces.

The Canon RF 28-70mm F2 L USM, RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM and RF 35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM will all be available for purchase in December 2018 for an estimated retail price of $ 2999, $ 1099 and $ 499.99 respectively.

The Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R will be available for purchase in October 2018 for an estimated retail price of $ 99.99 and $ 199.99 respectively. The Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R will all be available for purchase in February 2019 for an estimated retail price of $ 399.99 with a variable ND filter or $ 299.99 with a circular polarizing filter.

The Canon Speedlite EL-100 will be available for purchase in October 2018 for an estimated retail price of $ 199.99.
