Halide camera app comes to iPad with revamped interface, ‘Pro Mode’ and more

Lux, the team behind the popular iOS camera apps Halide and Spectre, has announced a major update to Halide that adds support for Apple’s iPad tablets.

The Halide experience on the iPad will be familiar to those who have used the iPhone version thanks to a similar design language, but the interface has been redesigned from the ground up to make to a more streamlined shooting experience on the larger display.

As a whole, the interface is more spread out across the edges of the display and Lux’s custom typeface is now bolder for easier viewing. Lux even took into account the radius of the iPad screen’s corners so they could match the radius of the buttons to neatly nest into the interface for minimal distraction. To minimize the need to reach across the screen when changing settings, Lux has included what it calls an ‘expandable honeycomb’ next to the shutter button that brings up the most commonly needed settings and tools

Since iPads tend to be more two-handed devices, Lux has also added a feature that will ‘flip’ the interface so it’s left-hand oriented for the southpaws out there.

Lux has also addressed the issue of the iPad’s unusual aspect ratio that can sometimes make for a confusing experience when shooting. It’s called ‘Pro View,’ and what it does is shrink the liveview display into the center of the screen so it’s easier to see the entire scene and compose a shot. Doing this also adds extra space on the display to more prominently display the histogram, waveform, manual focus and other pro features, ensuring nothing overlaps with the liveview. Pro View can be toggled on and off in the bottom left-hand corner of the interface (bottom right-hand if you’ve flipped the interface).

The iPhone version of Halide has also been updated with bug fixes and other improvements, including a few UI changes inspired by the iPad update.

You can download Halide for free in the iOS App Store. An in-app purchase will unlock additional features for $ 1.99 per month or $ 9.99 per year.

British Museum launches revamped online collections database early with 1.9M images

On Tuesday, April 28, the British Museum announced that it is the latest institution to make digitized images of its various collections available for free online. The ‘revamped’ online collections database now contains 1.9 million images that are offered to the public under the restrictive Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, which allows for non-commercial use with attribution.

According to the announcement tweet from British Museum, its team expedited the release of this new online database so that the public can browse the museum’s collections while in quarantine at home. The launch follows similar big digitized collections launches from institutions like Paris Musées and The Smithsonian.

This revamp simplifies things for public users who are no longer required to register in order to use the images. Going forward, anyone can browse the online collections database and download any of the 1.9 million images for non-commercial use with attribution. Each image is scanned at a high-resolution; the online viewer enables users to zoom in on objects to view fine details.

According to the British Museum, this collection features two million years’ worth of history that spans six continents. The museum digitized nearly 4.5 million objects, making it the largest online collection of its kind. British Museum explains that its revamped interface not only provides access to these images for free but also makes it easier for the public to find the specific items they’re looking for.

The online collections are vast, including everything from ancient Egyptian sculptures to Assyrian artifacts, Greek objects, Iranian jewelry, artwork from the Roman Empire and much more. Viewers can sort through the content based on collection galleries, as well as searches using museum numbers, persons, places and keywords.

This launch is a welcomed addition to the growing body of digitized artifacts and other works made available to the general public online. However, the release isn’t without criticism. Unlike The Smithsonian and Paris Musées, both of which released their online collections with Creative Common 0 licenses, the British Museum’s collection is made available under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license.

Author and activist Coro Doctorow highlighted some of the concerns related to this in a recent tweet thread, pointing out, among other things, that UK law states that copyrights can only subsist in cases where the work is ‘original in the sense that it is the author’s own ‘intellectual creation.” Among other things, the nation’s copyright law [PDF, page 3] notes that it’s ‘unlikely that what is merely a retouched, digitised image of an older work can be considered as ‘original.”

Critics have also pointed out that Wikimedia Commons only allows images that aren’t ‘subject to copyright restrictions which would prevent them being used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose,’ meaning the British Museum’s digitized collections can’t be included in the Commons catalog.

Despite these concerns, the revamped database is a step in the right direction. The British Museum has been commended for the effort it put into this launch — not just for the high-resolution images and scans of the content, but also the number of tools and information the museum provides for each listing.

The database includes the name(s) of the original excavator who discovered the items, where the object was found, the materials it is made from, the technique used to craft it, its size and weight, its present condition, where it was acquired, its registration number and more. Canon announces Rebel T8i with revamped AF and (proper) 4K video

Canon has announced a new DSLR, aimed at ambitious beginners and enthusiasts. The Rebel EOS T8i is Canon’s latest Rebel-series flagship, and packs a pretty impressive set of features, including a new Digic 8 processor, which enables 7 fps continuous shooting and 4K video capture (including 24p). Like the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, the T8i also supports vertical video.

The T8i is built around a 24MP APS-C format CMOS sensor, with Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus. Face and Eye-detection is available in live view and video modes. In viewfinder shooting mode, autofocus is handled by a new 45-point all cross-type AF system, which works in concert with a 220,000-pixel AE sensor to allow ‘iTR’ tracking AF and face detection.

Previously only available in Canon’s higher-end DSLRs, these features make the T8i the most powerful Rebel-series camera yet, at least on paper. Meanwhile, Canon will be hoping that the usual suite of wireless connectivity options, plus a vlogging-friendly vari-angle touchscreen will make it accessible to first-time ILC buyers.

The EOS Rebel T8i will cost $ 749.99 body only, and $ 899.99 in a kit with the EF-S 18-55mm F4-5.6 IS STM.

Luminar 4 available for pre-order, comes with new AI features and revamped UI

Skylum software has been teasing the release of its Luminar 4 image editing package for quite some time now, we’ve seen previews of a number of machine-learning tool, including the AI Skin Enhancer and Portrait Enhancer filters, the AI Sky Replacement filter and the AI Structure filter which selectively enhances textures and detail in images.

Now the company has announced Luminar 4 will be shipping on November 18, 2019. Apart from the tools mentioned above the new version comes with a refreshed user interface and updated workflow. Luminar says the new software will make for a shorter learning process and ‘While the software incorporates complex tools, they’re completely customizable and easy to use, whether you’re a beginner or seasoned professional.’

In the user interface filters are now called ‘tools’ and are organized into six tabs:

  • Tools: Basic tools, including Crop, Transform and Erase.
  • Essentials: Everything for basic Color and Tone Correction.
  • Creative: Photo processing tools for enhancing images creatively, including AI Sky Replacement.
  • Portrait: Tools oriented for processing portraits, including AI Skin Enhancer and Portrait Enhancer.
  • Pro: More complex tools for advanced photo processing.
  • Deprecated: Tools left for compatibility of presets that have been created within earlier versions of Luminar.

Luminar 4 is available as a standalone application but also works as a plugin for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop Elements, as well as Apple Photos for macOS and Aperture.

The new software will be released on November 18 and set you back $ 89 for the full version or $ 69 for an upgrade. If you pre-order before the 18th you get the full version for $ 10 less and receive a one-year plan to SmugMug as a bonus. More information is available on the Skylum website.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019 due out in November with revamped UI, improved Lightroom migration

ON1 has announced the upcoming version of its photo editing program ON1 Photo RAW 2019. Due out November 2018, ON1 claims version 2019 ‘is one of the biggest and best releases in our history [and] will include tons of improvements to the photo editing workflow and new features.’

Specifically, ON1 Photo RAW 2019 will have an updated UI, a new non-destructive workflow for layers, auto-alignment of layers, focus stacking, a new portrait module, a new AI-powered masking tool, a new text tool, new digital asset management updates and — arguably most significant — a Lightroom photo settings migration plug-in.

Starting with the user interface, ON1 says version 2019 will have a ‘fresh and modern feel.’ Specifically, ON1 says the overall UI will have improved contrast and updated icons, tabs and sliders that take up less screen real estate.

Before diving into the other features, we’re going to hit on the new Lightroom Photo Settings Migration feature. Detailed in the above video, you can now easily export your Lightroom catalogs directly into ON1 Photo RAW 2019 and bring along all metadata and non-destructive edits with the images. While the edits won’t be exact, ON1 notes its AI-powered algorithms will do their best to get more most accurate edits possible using what ON1 Photo RAW 2019 has to offer.

The workflow for layers is no longer a separate module. In ON1 Photo RAW 2019, the non-destructive layers workflow will be present inside of the Develop and Effects module. ‘This will allow for creating or editing multi­layered files, including raw files, and keep the non­destructive settings for each photo layer,’ says ON1 in its press release.

Focus Stacking is also new. As the name suggests, it automatically blends a collection of images together at varying focusing distances and lets you adjust it in real-time to get just the right amount of depth of field. The Auto-Align Layers feature combines multiple images as layers for easier masking and blending when editing.

A new Portrait Module can automatically detect faces in images and features a custom toolset for precise retouching. ON1 specifically mentioned the ability to ‘smooth skin, brighten and sharpen eyes and whiten teeth.’

The AI Masking Tool isn’t due out until a December update to ON1 Photo RAW 2019, but ON1 says it ‘will allow [you] to easily identify areas of your photo to create a selection or mask and the AI technology detects your subject matter and automatically creates a beautiful mask.’

Other additions include a new Text Tool, a Layered HDR Workflow and additional Filter Options in the Effects module. Support for new cameras and lenses have also been added.

ON1 Photo RAW 2019 is set for a November 2018 release and is currently available for pre-order on ON1’s website for $ 100 for a limited time. If you own any previous versions of ON1 software, pre-orders are only $ 80 for a limited time.

We’ve revamped two of our most popular site tools – our camera and lens feature search pages. We didn’t want to completely reinvent the wheel, and changes mostly relate to design and user experience. The tools now look friendlier (we think), search options should be a little more logical and the process of narrowing down searches should be less confusing.
