Retro Restoration: Abandoned Space Age Bungalows

04 Jul

[ By Steph in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Abandoned Space Bungalows 1

In the 1970s, these odd little pods were on the cutting edge of portable architecture, with a design clearly influenced by Space exploration and futurism. Today, they sit abandoned on the lot of an Italian holiday resort, cracked and stained. Time hasn’t been kind to these relics of a bygone era, but they could be saved. Restoration specialists are seeking funding to preserve them, along with the rest of the resort, making them an active travel destination.

Abandoned Space Bungalows 5

‘BANGA’ portable bungalows were created by an unknown designer in 1971, intended for use as compact living spaces with folding beds, a small bathroom and kitchenette. The interiors are reminiscent of airplanes and boats, with rounded surfaces, porthole windows, and virtually everything built right into the plastic walls.

All of the factory-assembled components are made from glass-reinforced plastic GRP. Left to age over the decades since they were built, these unusual living units have definitely seen better days, and they’re in need of some serious care, but it’s not hard to imagine them scrubbed up and ready for novelty-seeking travelers.

Retro Hover Cars: Editing Photos to Float Vintage Rides

19 Feb

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vintage & Retro. ]

hover car

One of the most common concepts for the future has long been the wheel-free automobile, even before it was popularized in Back to the Future – but always, these looked almost shockingly familiar to our everyday rides.

hover floating retro cars

Renaud Marion is well established in the realm of realistic photo editing, splicing everything from architecture to wild animals into ordinary city street scenes and letting the strange juxtapositions speak for themselves.

hover vintage car photoshop

In this new series, he simply (albeit carefully) edits out all trace of wheels from various vintage vehicles, resulting in surreal portraits of apparently-flying cars. Even the dingiest rusting old 70′s-era auto seems somehow wonderfully otherworldly after he is done.

We ? Retro Media: Vinyl, VHS, Tapes & Film | Off Book | PBS

17 Jan

We live in a digital world that gives us all the media we could possibly dream of at the click of a mouse, yet many people miss the old school physical formats from our past. Listening to vinyl and cassettes allows us to connect with music in a different way than MP3s. VHS and 8mm create visual aesthetics and atmospheres that are difficult to replicate in digital video. And the surprises inherent to analog instant photography help embed an organic quality to the recording of our memories. The challenges these retro formats present to capturing and experiencing media actually enhance our appreciation for the sound or image, making the art we love a bit more intimate, and real. Here’s a list of all the art used in the episode! docs.google.com Featuring: Eilon Paz, www.dustandgrooves.com Prof. Al Nigrin, Rutgers University Ryan Martin, Dais Records Rebecca Cleman, Electric Arts Intermix David Bias, Impossible Project www.the-impossible-project.com Music: Professor Kliq – soundcloud.com PhatRecords Music – www.youtube.com Jason Day – soundcloud.com Diadainconsupertrafra – soundcloud.com Nic Bommarito – freemusicarchive.org Binarpilot – www.jamendo.com Duckett – ccmixter.org More Off Book: Our last video on The Effect of Color: youtu.be Our short documentary on The Creativity of Indie Video Games: www.youtu.be Taking a look at The Art of Web Design: youtu.be We asked Can Fandom Change Society?: youtu.be An examination of The Art of Animation & Motion Graphics: youtu.be Follow

Retro Redial: 8 Creative Phone Booth Conversion Projects

phone booth banksy art

As you may recall (and please, forgive the pun), pay phones used to be ubiquitous – in many places they remain a physical presence, but without a use. As Banksy‘s work (above) points out, their primary purpose is arguably quite dead – but, on the upside, that leaves room for all kinds of radical rebirths.

phone booth data hub

Around the world, old phone booths are also becoming high-tech data hubs. Consider New York City, which has just unrolled a pilot program to turn 250 old phone booths into information centers, providing basic maps, directions and directories to tourists, but also up-to-the-minute emergency information and safety alerts in case of serious storms or other natural disasters.

phone booth library nyc

Local architect John Locke has come up with another, lower-tech, even-easier reuse project for some of the 10,000+ remaining unused public phones on the streets of Manhattan – easily-fabricated micro-libraries that can be slotted into existing boxes, taking advantage of their robust framework and shelter. No fasteners needed for this efficient and inexepensive flat-pack solution.

phone booth media swap

Across the pond, iconic red-box phone booths of England may be even more well-suited to this particular kind of conversion, being closeable and thus, while not 100% weatherproof, still more completely sealed from the elements. The result is one of “the country’s smallest lending libraries – stocking 100 books. Villagers from Westbury-sub-Mendip in Somerset can use the library around the clock, selecting books, DVDs and CDs. Users simply stock it with a book they have read, swapping it for one they have not.”

phone booth charging station

Turning back toward the high-tech, Telekom Austria is tackling over ten thousand disused phone booths, turning them into recharging stations for the nation’s estimated growth toward over a half-million electric vehicles in the next decade. But enough about functional conversions – what about the artistic side? See below for homeless shelters, aquariums, even outhouses made of old phone booths.

Fujifilm X100S retains retro looks while adding cutting-edge technologies

08 Jan

fujifilm_x100s.png

Fujifilm has announced the X100S – a significantly enhanced replacement for its X100 large sensor, fixed-lens compact camera. The X100S retains its predecessor’s classic styling but has been extensively re-worked inside, with a 16MP X-Trans sensor that includes on-chip phase-detection elements (a technology first utilized by Fujifilm), and a higher-resolution LCD in its Hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder. A faster ‘EXR II’ processor, along with the on-chip AF information help Fujifilm offer what it says is the world’s fastest AF. The X100S backs-up its rangefinder-esque looks with a digital split-image manual focus system, allowing fast manual focusing. A great many fine details of the camera have also been enhanced – we look in greater detail in our hands-on preview article.

21 Retro Travel Posters Feature Fantasy & Sci-Fi Destinations

25 Dec

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vintage & Retro. ]

Ever wanted to be the next companion of Doctor Who, wished you could ride along on the Firefly-class Serenity, or wondered what it would be like to cruise the galaxy with the rebels (or imperial fleet) of Star Wars? Created to look like vintage travel posters, these faux advertisements give a new spin to science-fictional and other fantastical worlds.

Steve Thomas is working on selling posters, but for now has a galactic travel calender you can buy. His Star Wars series features such dubious destinations as Mos Eisley and the Swamps of Degobah, and offers transit via imperial shuttles, star destroyers or for the more adventurous: Jawa sandcrawlers, rebel escape ships and the Millennium Falcon.

Adam Levermore was “commissioned me to create a series of travel posters for Joss Whedon’s film, Serenity [and designed] these as WPA-style travel posters for the planets and locations from the movie. They were a huge success, and remain one of Quantum Mechanix’s top sellers. The highest praise came from Whedon himself, when he posted on the Whedonesque blog, calling the posters “extremely cool” and “masterfully designed.”
