In pictures: Restoration of Boeing’s first 747 ‘jumbo jet’

28 Jul

The Boeing 747 – or the ‘jumbo jet’ as it is commonly known, changed the world. The 747 first flew in 1969, and transformed modern air travel with its ability to carry more people – and more cargo – across the globe than any previous airliner, shrinking it in the process. Seattle’s Museum of Flight houses RA001 – the very first 747, which flew as a test airframe from its inaugural liftoff in 1969 through until the early 1990s. The museum is currently restoring RA001 both inside and out. Click through for pictures.

Retro Restoration: Abandoned Space Age Bungalows

04 Jul

Abandoned Space Bungalows 1

In the 1970s, these odd little pods were on the cutting edge of portable architecture, with a design clearly influenced by Space exploration and futurism. Today, they sit abandoned on the lot of an Italian holiday resort, cracked and stained. Time hasn’t been kind to these relics of a bygone era, but they could be saved. Restoration specialists are seeking funding to preserve them, along with the rest of the resort, making them an active travel destination.

Abandoned Space Bungalows 5

‘BANGA’ portable bungalows were created by an unknown designer in 1971, intended for use as compact living spaces with folding beds, a small bathroom and kitchenette. The interiors are reminiscent of airplanes and boats, with rounded surfaces, porthole windows, and virtually everything built right into the plastic walls.

All of the factory-assembled components are made from glass-reinforced plastic GRP. Left to age over the decades since they were built, these unusual living units have definitely seen better days, and they’re in need of some serious care, but it’s not hard to imagine them scrubbed up and ready for novelty-seeking travelers.

Lost in Photoshop: another old photo restoration part i

29 Oct

I have a tip about straightening the rotation of images — particularly scanned images. the old photo is younger than 1901 and older than 1930, I believe. Given the image size (approximately 2 1/4 x 3 1/2) I would guess that it was taken by a Kodak Brownie (probably ‘2’) camera. The original image had faded quite a bit. I attempt to use various techniques to recover the image, including: level adjustments, use of high pass filter, use of surface blur filter, use of “split masks”, and attempting to reconstitute “depth” using linear burn (non-destructively) in an “overlay” [not the mode] layer.

Adobe Photoshop old photo restoration – photo touchup

04 May

This is a photo of my grandmother . The photo is the only one we have of her at this age . So I did a restore on the photo and increased the photo res from a very small , wallet size to a full 8×10 . This was done in Adobe Photoshop cs3 . The final picture took about 6 hours of touch up and finish work . I just wanted to show the bulk of the initial work for this vid . When I restore vintage photos or just do touch ups, they can be very time consuming . The music bed or backing track used in this photoshop cs3 example is Aerosmith Dream On acoustic version . This photo was in extreme decay and bad shape . If you would like more information about Digital Design House , please visit our website www.digitaldesignhouse.com

More photo restorations at www.ade-studio.com. Nothing reflects the professionalism of photo experts so vividly as the quality of restoration work. This video will demonstrate that photo restoration is a real art, which requires talent and skills not just correct application of Photoshop filters or premade actions.

Photoshop CS4 colour correction technique using curves and hue saturation layers. Completely reversible and adjustable, also uses a blended Black and White layer for increased contrast. Apologies for the poor sound, I need to find a tool to redub these video’s, and get a better mic!! Sign up for the blog at weshootpeople.wordpress.com
