Trashed Resort: Japan’s Abandoned New Muroto Sky Rest

abandoned Sky Rest New Muroto
Vacation not “vacant” enough? Abandoned in 1978, Japan‘s New Muroto Sky Rest resort is apparently patronized only by zombies or those hiding from them.

Little is known of the New Muroto Sky Rest resort before its closure and abandonment in 1978… perhaps that’s why the place closed and was abandoned. Certainly its location at the tip of Cape Muroto – a rocky, windswept peninsula jutting southeastward into the Pacific Ocean – was both scenic and accessible by major highways. Then there’s the “prehistoric robot” facade gazing menacingly out to sea. Credit Flickr user Craig Hunter (pictor ignotus) with the above images captured in June of 2009.

Cape Muroto is the largest cape in Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands. While considered by many to be Japan’s version of the boondocks, Shikoku is popular with tourists performing the traditional pilgrimage to 88 select temples and a number of hot spring inns and resorts cater to weary wanderers in search of rejuvenation. Kudos to Abandoned Kansai for the above images dating from April of 2011.

The New Muroto Sky Rest did not have an on-site “onsen” – in fact, it had little to recommend itself as a resort besides its stunning seaside setting. According to urbex vet Jordy Meow, the complex featured a restaurant, a video-game parlor (de rigueur in the Seventies) and a pair of cantilevered side wings which offered unparalleled views of Cape Muroto and the ocean beyond.

The wings are still extant, as are the aforementioned views but as for the rest… put it this way, if it wasn’t nailed down or too heavy to carry away, it’s gone for good. We should mention that those scenic views are towards the ocean: over the past couple of decades Cape Muroto has become infested with more than a few ugly telecommunications towers, radio antennae, and even a wind farm.

Abandoned Quarry to Ice World: Pit Reclaimed as Resort

30 Aug

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 1

China is set to get yet another quarry-turned-resort in an ambitious project by Coop Himmelb(l)au architecture, transforming an abandoned mining pit into an artificial icy landscape with an indoor skiing center and a cantilevered outdoor swimming pool. The Deep Pit Ice and Snow World at Dawang Mountain Resort near Changsha, China will also include a 100-meter-tall hotel with over 300 rooms looking out over Tongxi Lake and Dawang Mountain.

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 2

Spanning 170 meters cliff-to-cliff of what is currently an abandoned cement quarry, the resort will offer both cold-weather and warm-weather recreational opportunities, with the icy and snowy attractions inside a sculpted shell. Beneath this volume will be a sunken garden featuring cliffside pathways, ponds and islands. A central glass cone will cut through the building to bring natural daylight into this subterranean space.

A 60-meter (196 feet) waterfall will crash from the cantilevered outdoor swimming pool on the edge of the quarry, deep into the pit. From inside the Snow and Ice World, visitors can peer through large glass facades onto the watery landscape filled with greenery.

The project is very similar to the Shimao Intercontinental Hotel (pictured above), a 19-story, 5-star hotel located deep within a 328-foot abandoned quarry near the base of Tianmashan Mountain near Shanghai. Though the concept seemed too crazy to be true, construction has already begun. That resort will include an aquarium, restaurants, and recreational activities taking advantage of the unique landscape, like rock climbing and water-based sports.

Hanging Hotel: Hard-to-Reach Resort for Rock Climbers

01 Nov

[ By Steph in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

If you can reach this futuristic hotel pod imbedded in the side of a mountain, your reward is a quiet resting space that you can customize to create a relaxing, meditative environment tailored to your whims. Designed for rock climbers, the Hanging Hotel concept by Dr. Margot Krasojevic was designed for Holden Manz Wine Estate Cape Town in Massif de L’Esterel in the South of France.

This ‘suspended campsite’ is a system of pods and platforms attached to the granite through borehole foundations injected into the rock face. The platforms on the exterior offer additional climbing surfaces, and places to rest while getting closer to the entrance.

Made of steel horizontal piles, columns and frames as well as plywood paneling, a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer shell and a wooden walkway, the Hanging Hotel clings to the rock face in seemingly precarious fashion, looking a bit like an artificial parasite.

Once inside, climbers can access what Krasojevic deems “the most important ingredient to this mix of materials” – a holographic filtered compound glass and prism louver system that alters the look and feel of the interior by adjusting the light level inside, reducing glare and producing shimmering colored light effects on the interior walls.

This orchestrated surreality takes advantage of climbers’ exhaustion and the physical effects of altitude to help them disassociate from the reality of the present moment for enhanced rest and recovery. “It can also ‘tune climbers in’ to the reality of the environment by creating a hyperawareness about the nuances of light that our vision may not be accustomed to seeing,” explains the designer.

Stoppers: Toufic Araman’s Sunset Resort

16 Oct

To photograph the resort area of Sharm El Sheikh, in Sinai, Dubai-based photographer Toufic Araman spared no effort.

He lit the hills. He lit—individually—the area under the area under each of the dozens of umbrellas on the normally dark beach. With an ingenious hack, I might add. He even lit the boat.

And he did it all without a single strobe, as he all but apologized to me later. That's right, this is all done with continuous lights. And it wasn't easy … Read more »
