Pleasantly punchy: Nikon D3400 real-world samples gallery

30 Sep

The Nikon D3400 is the company’s newest entry-level DSLR, offering users 24MP and an 11-point AF system in a compact, lightweight body. It may not be the most exciting camera for Nikon faithful on paper, but in the real-world, it offers impressive image quality that will put any smartphone camera to shame. We used the camera mostly in the ‘Auto’ or ‘No Flash Auto’ modes, and were pleasantly surprised by its default output – metering is usually spot-on, with good sharpening and punchy color (though it may be over-the-top for some).

Over the past week, we’ve had a chance to photograph city living, botanical still-life, playful pups and yes, even some sleepy cats. Take a look at how the D3400, its 18-55mm kit lens and the DX 35mm F1.8G lens fared in our real-world samples gallery.

Traveling light: M.Zuiko 12?100mm F4 Real-world Samples

26 Sep

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_6403402487″,”galleryId”:”6403402487″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

The new M.Zuiko Digital Ed 12?100mm F4 IS PRO is a 24-200mm equivalent zoom for the Micro Four Thirds system. On paper, it’s the ideal travel lens, and we were lucky enough to bring one back from Photokina last week to try out.

So how does it stack up? That’s what we wanted to know, so we spent a jet-lagged morning back in Seattle trying it out with the OM-D E-M1. And we have the pictures to prove it.

Petzval 58mm real-world samples

18 Sep

Lomography’s second riff on a historic lens design, the Petzval 58 offers the same swirly bokeh effect as the original 85mm variation at a shorter focal length. It’s been given the same brass treatment as the first lens and also uses the Waterhouse aperture system with interchangeable plates, but introduces a Bokeh Control Ring to adjust the strength of the swirly bokeh effect. Funded via a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign, the Petzval 58 made its way to our office. Take a look and see what the latest Petzval can do.

We’ve only had the 5D Mark IV for a couple days, but that hasn’t stopped us from taking it out for a bit of shooting. Take a look at some sample images from Canon’s latest full-frame DSLR.

*Raw conversions have been performed with a very early beta build of Adobe Camera Raw. Image quality may not represent the final shipping version.

Canon EOS M10 real-world samples

27 Aug

The Canon EOS M10 is the most beginner-friendly camera of that manufacturer’s mirrorless family, doing away with many physical controls and embracing touchscreen functionality. Its 18MP APS-C sensor, built-in Wi-Fi and compact size help make it a compelling go-everywhere camera, especially when you add Canon’s svelte 22m F2 to the mix.

We’ve had it on hand for strolls through the neighborhood, shows in dim bars and in the stands watching some world-class tennis. Take a look at the samples we’ve gathered so far.

Pentax K-70 real-world sample gallery

19 Aug

It’s a bit of a shame the K-70 didn’t arrive in the middle of winter. The weather-resistant design would have made it the perfect companion for braving the inevitable Northwest rain, and the famed in body “Shake Reduction” would have helped in overcast light conditions, as well. Nevertheless, when it arrived we took the refined 24MP DSLR out in the hot summer sun for a bit of a sample shakedown.

Lensbaby Twist 60 real-world sample gallery

06 Aug

Lensbaby’s Twist 60 is all about the bokeh. It promises appealing subject/background separation with Petzval-like swirly bokeh, offering an F2.5 maximum aperture. The Twist 60 is part of Lensbaby’s Optic Swap system and is currently offered for Canon, Nikon and Sony E mounts. We just couldn’t resist taking it out for a spin  — and we have to confess that we stuck mostly to wide open apertures in order to get the full swirly effect.  Take a look at our samples below, and stay tuned for more thoughts on swirly bokeh!

Fujifilm X-E2S real-world samples

02 Aug

The Fujifilm X-E2S takes everything we loved about the X-E2 and its latest firmware updates and adds… well, not much. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a capable and relevant camera in today’s market. With great build quality, plentiful external controls, retro styling and Fujifilm’s gorgeous film simulations, the X-E2S just begs you to slap on a prime lens and go out shooting. The substantial drop in MSRP compared to the original X-E2 doesn’t hurt, either. Take a look at what we came up with when we took the X-E2S for a spin.

Canon EF-M 28mm F3.5 Macro real-world samples

25 Jul

‘Get closer’ is photo advice that the Canon EF-M 28mm F3.5 takes to heart. It can achieve focus as close as 9.4cm/3.7in, and brings a couple of built-in LEDs to the party to brighten things up. It’s not perfect, but it’s priced attractively and if you’re a Canon EOS M shooter then we think this little lens is a great way to experiment with macro photography. Read more of our impressions on using it and take a look at a full gallery of samples.
