Painting as Protest: Rainbow Stairs Spark Guerilla Reaction

30 Sep

painted steps art image

It started with a single person painting one public staircase, but when city workers of Istanbul, Turkey covered this brightly-colored street art with dull gray paint, citizen activists picked up brushes in rapid response. Thus escalated an isolated incident into a quiet but powerful city-wide campaign mixing politics, graffiti and beautification.

painted staircase silent protest

Aged 64,local  retired engineer Huseyin Cetinel spend reportedly $ 800 on paint simply to make the steps in his area more attractive – he notes that nature is colorful, and suggests simply that cities can be as well.

painting stairs newspaper story

As images of his work began to go viral online, many viewers saw it as a call for equal rights – a political statement. When the municipality painted the original stairs over (then initially denied doing so, adding to the confusion), that act was perhaps inevitably interpreted through a polarizing lens as well.

painted steps reaction political

Twitter and Facebook were awash with calls to color other sets of stairs around the hilly city, and a quiet war fought with guerrilla art began … the city whitewashing (or gray-painting) newly-colored staircases as people kept on recoloring them, before finally agreeing to let the steps be painted as the citizens wished.

As interviewed by the New York Times, local financial adviser Nalan Ozgul sees a larger lesson in these events: “There has been some movement in the society, a social uprising together with the Gezi Park protests, and this is just an extension of that spirit. The fact that the government-run municipality first denied having painted over the stairs, then agreed to paint them back in color, shows how desperate and indecisive they are about their policies.”

Alternatively, perhaps this strange story shows the everyday tensions between ordinary people and relentless bureaucracies as much as it says anything  about the activist citizens and imposing governments of a particular time and place, but the effects are certainly colorful no matter how you look at them (Images via Instagram photographer sumrue and Twitter users @durmusbeyin, @demishevich, @verbikerem and @ozgelu)

Panoramic Rainbow: Circular Space Spans Color Spectrum

14 Sep

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

rainbow panoramic walkway design

Rainbows on the horizon are impossible to approach, let alone pass through – they flicker and fade like phantoms, except in the case of this iconic space.

rainbow museum roof path

Your Rainbow Panorama by Olafur Eliasson is an enclosed circular walkway that sits atop the ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark. Its colored glass spans from floor to ceiling and rotates visitors through five hundred feet of color, looping them through a rainbow of panoramic city views.

rainbow roof green yellow

The experience of walking along this 500-foot path is at once reductive and complex. At each step, the city outside becomes a monochromatic landscape, filtered through the lens of single slices of color that rotate as you move.

From outside, the raised structure forms a bright beacon within the city, a recognizable icon thanks to its combination of round shape and vibrant color. As this project illustrates, powerful architecture can be about more than structure, building and void – it is also about shaping experience through color and light.

rainbow spectrum walking experience

According to its Danish-Icelandic designer, it is “a space which virtually erases the boundaries between inside and outside – where people become a little uncertain as to whether they have stepped into a work or into part of the museum. This uncertainty is important to me, as it encourages people to think and sense beyond the limits within which they are accustomed to moving.”  In the end, is it an gallery space, a viewing platform, a permanent art installation … or does it perhaps span a spectrum of spatial definitions as well as colors?

Transformation: Sunset Rainbow over Yosemite National Park

Sunset Transformation and Rainbow - Yosemite National Park, California

Transformation: Sunset Rainbow over Yosemite National Park

30 minutes of amazing transformation is all it took to change a drab gray stormy view of  Yosemite’s Half Dome and Nevada Falls into a dynamic fiery rainbow filled  scene. Literally in the 11th hour after a full day of foggy and overcast weather I witnessed a sunset like I’ve never seen anywhere in all my travels.

As if scripted, storm clouds rose above Yosemite Valley and were illuminated by a thin pipe of sunset light. Just as the intensity of the red light was about to peak the clouds exploded into downpour. This cloudburst in combination with the suns last gasp of light created the largest rainbow I’ve ever seen. Even with a Zeiss 15mm ultra-wide lens I was only able to photograph a third of it. This sunset was easily the most stunning I’ve yet to witness.

Cool Colors: Rainbow Igloo Built of 500 Translucent Blocks

25 Mar

colorful rainbow ice igloo

When your prospective future mother-in-law takes the time to fill hundreds of cartons with colored water before your visit, it would behoove you to do something with them. And thus this unexpected collaboration was born.

colorful iglooe interior blocks

Braving temperatures down to negative 25 degrees (both Fahrenheit and Celcius), engineering student Daniel Gray and his girlfriend Kathleen Starrie took these frozen ice bricked (formed by Brigid Burton) and constructed an incredible structure.

colored snowcrete construction process

Instead of carving each block, Gray developed a kind of ‘snowcrete’, using flexible layers of snow as mortar to create the hemispherical shape required (after extensive calculations to make sure it was of a size that would not run them out of building materials).

colorful igloo night entrance

150 combined work-hours and 5 days later, the result is nothing short of stunning – the semi-spontaneous igloo is colorful by day, but even more dazzling by night when lit from the inside. If this was a pre-marital tes, one can only hope he passed with flying (or frozen) colors.

Rainbow Food Photography is Not Entirely Appetizing

08 Dec

[ By Delana in Art & Photography & Video. ]

Would you eat purple lettuce? How about green bacon or multi-colored pasta? Photographer Henry Hargreaves has put some of our favorite foods into an entirely new context by giving them a technicolor makeover. But does it make you hungry for rainbow-colored meals or just all kinds of queasy?

Hargreaves’ interpretations of common foods call to mind a joyous celebration of diversity…but instead of rainbow flags and pride parades, his celebration involves meal time.

One has to wonder if it was the photographer’s intent to invoke those visual associations of diversity or if his Foods of the Rainbow series is all about fun.

We eat rainbow-colored food frequently, but it is usually candy, breakfast cereal or other artificially-flavored, nutritionally-devoid fare. In Hargreaves’ hands, these everyday foods seem to take on an entirely new level of appeal (or unappeal, as it may be).

Although most of us would have no problem scoffing rainbow-colored ice cream, not many people would go anywhere near the unusual bacon cheeseburger above.
