Canon shows forthcoming RF lenses including radical 70-200mm F2.8 IS

Introduction

Alongside the EOS RP, Canon has announced the next six lenses it plans to introduce for its RF mount. Don’t be fooled by the timing: although they are being announced with the RP most of these lenses are not being targeted at entry-level or even mass-market customers.

Canon has already said it’s working on a full frame mirrorless camera aimed at professionals, and most of today’s development announcements make clear it intends to have appropriate lenses ready to suit it. All six lenses will be formally launched by the end of 2019, the company says.

Details are pretty scant right now (technically Canon is only announcing its intention to develop these lenses), but mockups of all six were on show at the pre-launch RP event.

RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM

To us the most exciting lens to be revealed is the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS. Part of our excitement is that a 70-200mm F2.8 is one of the workhorses of any system. Pros and enthusiasts use these lenses for a whole range of shooting situations, from portraiture to sports, so it’s an essential ingredient for a system trying to appeal to high-end shooters.

Another piece of good news is that the lens uses Canon’s Nano USM lens motors. The company is a little cagey about exactly how these work, other than that they provide linear, rather than the rotational motion of the ring-type USM motors used in DSLR lenses. What we do know is that the fastest and smoothest focusing lens in the RF system so far (the 24-105mm F4L IS) is powered by Nano USM, which bodes well for the 70-200mm.

Oh, and the other interesting thing about the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS? It’s TINY. Here we’ve shot it alongside the most recent EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS and you can see just how much smaller it’s going to be. Unless the ‘pro’ RF model ends up being huge, this is going to make an impressively compact combination.

Canon’s engineers wouldn’t be drawn on exactly how they’ve managed to make it so small, beyond pointing us back to the claimed benefits of the short and wide lens mount. There may well be something more complex going on: we’ll find out when it’s formally released but we were given the distinct impression that it’s not a diffractive optics (Fresnel) design.

RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM

Another great pro workhorse is the 24-70mm F2.8 and Canon’s going to launch one of those, too. We’ve had no details about specifics but it’s a sensibly-sized lens, even if it isn’t as impressively small at its tele counterpart.

Canon has confirmed that it’s working on an in-body stabilization system

Like the 70-200mm the 24-70mm has built-in image stabilization and Canon has confirmed that it’s working on an in-body stabilization system for future camera models that will work in conjunction with this. So you’ll get stabilization on all RF bodies and even greater stabilization on others.

Like the 70-200mm, the 24-70mm will be driven by a Nano USM focus motor.

RF 15-35mm F2.8 L USM

The last in the cover-the-bases pro lineup is the 15-35mm F2.8. Canon says the RF lens mount allowed them to make it a 15-35mm, rather than starting at 16mm.

Again the lens is small and stabilized and, like the other two F2.8 zooms, will be driven by a fast, silent Nano USM motor.

We only wonder whether it needs more prominent markings to make it easier to distinguish from the 24-70, when they’re placed next to one another in a camera bag.

RF 85mm F1.2 L USM

While the trio of F2.8 lenses are all pretty compact, the same can’t be said of the 85mm F1.2. We thought the RF 50mm F1.2 was big (in part because we’ve only had the mid-range EOS R to mount it on, so far), but perhaps not unreasonably, the 85mm F1.2 is even bigger.

We’ve been impressed by the optical performance of the 50mm F1.2 so far. And, while we can’t be sure how much of that can be ascribed to the short, wide lens mount, Canon is clearly doing something right. A super-fast 85mm prime that can be confidently shot using off-center AF points is likely to be an exciting prospect as a portrait lens, even if you don’t always opt for for the hairbreadth depth-of-field that F1.2 can give you.

On the subject of focus, like the RF 50, the 85mm’s focus elements are too big and heavy for the use of a Nano USM motor, so it’s based around slightly less snappy ring-type USM drive.

The ‘DS’ designation is new for Canon. Sadly it doesn’t mean we should expect avant garde engineering and styling. Instead, it stands for ‘Defocus Smoothing’ and promises improved bokeh, compared with the standard version.

If that makes you think of apodization elements (essentially an element that’s progressively darker towards the edge to prevent bright-edged bokeh), then the things we were told in our interview with senior engineers will only confirm that assumption.

The DS was the only lens not shown in mockup form as we’ve been told that not all the design decisions have been made yet. Despite this, a computer rendering of the lens has been issued: it says ‘Defocus Smoothing’ on the front, whereas the non-DS version does not.

RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM

The only lens not clearly aimed at a high-end audience is the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM. It’s designed as a do-everything travel zoom, giving a 10x zoom capability.

We’ve mounted it here on the EOS RP and you can see it’s well matched (many of the other RF lenses have a wider diameter, and as a result lift the RP body off the ground if you haven’t attached the optional grip extension).

The two most obvious features are its comparatively small size and comparatively slow aperture range. We stress ‘comparatively’ when it comes to aperture, since you’d need a 15-150mm F2.5-4.0 on Canon APS-C to be equivalent, and few keen photographers would turn their noses up at such a lens. The other thing to notice is that it has only two rings, so we wonder whether the ‘focus’ ring will double as a custom ring when in AF mode.

Summary

The addition of these six lenses will extend the RF system to ten lenses by the end of 2019. With the three F2.8 zooms, 50 and 85mm F1.2s and the monstrous/rather cool 28-70mm F2, it means seven of the options have a distinctly high-end feel to them (and, we suspect, will have price tags to match).

This may leave EOS RP and many EOS R users a little short of choice (or push them towards adapting EF DSLR lenses), but makes very clear that Canon is gearing up for a pro-level RF camera sooner, rather than later.

Brutalist Victory: Concrete Skylines Dominate Radical Retro-Future Cities

Architectural trends come and go, but some visions are more persistent than others, and Brutalism could have been among them. This artist asks and answers the question: what if concrete monstrosities of the 1960s and 70s had somehow won the war against the steel-and-glass towers that dominate contemporary skylines?

German digital artist Clemens Gritl has built a virtual world around this retro-futuristic vision, dubbed “A Future City from the Past”, populated with extreme forms of concrete idealism. His “super-brutalist” metropolis extrapolates the revolutionary aesthetic of this harsh material, seen for a time as representing social progress and democratic ideals in architectural form.

Through 3D modeling (exhibited as black-and-white 2D images), this series presents something that could have been seen as utopian but inevitably, with Brutalism in hindsight, feels oppressive and dystopian. His renditions are meant to look like products of a past time, capturing Modernist-worthy views of these giant-sized Brutalist creations.

“All buildings and structures are homogenic,” says the artist. “The differentiations of architectural styles and eras are eliminated and replaced by geometric structures, repetition and absolute materiality.”

“Ballard’s novel paints a dark dystopian picture — the architecture of a single residential tower becomes the driving force for mysterious changes of the tenants behaviour. Can the presence of a high-rise structure truly create such a threatening atmosphere and social tension, culminating in murder, decay, destruction and even anarchy?”

Individually, various structures recall Modernist greats as well, like a towering residential complex arrayed on piloti (columns) as envisioned and realized by Le Corbusier. But, like Corbu’s masonry towers for his idyllic cities, the results do not look particularly livable. Perhaps the portrayal is also a little unfair — after all, Corbu at least envisioned these things surrounded by green landscapes.

Architectural Interventions: 12 Radical Modern Changes to Historic Buildings

Honoring the historic significance of deteriorating buildings while reinventing them for modern contexts and usage, these architectural interventions don’t try to erase signs of aging and damage or blend the demarcation between old and new. Cracks in stone manors are filled with glass, elegant Parisian facades are recreated in stark concrete, rusted steel volumes are lowered right into the empty shells of ruined brick houses. Whether renovating or reimagining the original structures, these projects preserve history and highlight the passage of time instead of demolishing or disguising it.

Ashley Castle, a former fortified manor for England’s Royal Family that fell into abandoned ruin for decades, comes back to life in the hands of London-based Witherford Watson Mann Architects, who repaired the damaged parts of the space with an insert that simultaneously blends and contrasts with the existing walls. The new brick follows the uneven breaks in the original masonry, preserving it not as it originally looked, but as it looked prior to the renovation, with all its years of history and wear.

A similar approach fills a crack in Blencowe Hall in Cumbria, enabling a deteriorating former manor house to become a luxury hotel in the countryside. The south tower was missing a roof and had sustained a large breach in its east wall. Donald Insall Associates worked with local architect Graham Norman to insert a steel frame and glazed wall into the reach, retaining it “as part of the story of the building.”

The Dovecote Studio by Haworth Tompkins, England

The Dovecote Studio is another example of radically preserving ruins that are deemed “too damaged to save” with some creative thinking. Studio Haworth Tompkins filled the empty shell of an abandoned building with a cortex steel building, which reads as an entirely separate structure within the original envelope but complements the red of the old brick as it rusts. The whole thing was preassembled and literally dropped inside by a crane. It now acts as housing for artists in residence, rehearsal space and temporary exhibition space at the internationally renowned music campus at Snape Maltings.

Kew House by Piercy & Company, London

Very little was left of the original buildings that stood on this street within the Kew Green Conservation Area of southwest London, yet the new construction honors it all the same, incorporating it into the exterior facade. A nineteenth century stable wall acts as the defining architectural feature of the street-fronting side of a new four-bedroom family house by Piercy&Company, retaining its sense of history while allowing the construction of a modern home for modern needs.

Abandoned Architecture as Art: 13 Radical Reclamation Projects

When an abandoned structure can’t be rehabbed in the traditional sense, whether due to practical constraints or simply becoming obsolete, it can be transformed for another purpose with paint, tape, lights and sculptural installations. Artists transform derelict buildings into public art, sometimes visible to lots of passersby and sometimes only to the urban explorers who might be curious enough to climb through a broken window.

One of many abandoned military buildings making up Fort Tilden on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens now spills red onto the surrounding sand in a site-specific installation by artist Katharina Grosse. The former aquatics building is highlighted inside and out in abstract crimson strokes meant to mimic the effect of a sunset in the Rockaways. The structure is set to be demolished in late 2016.

Only urban explorers curious enough to gain access to this abandoned water tank in Slab City, California will ever see this somber circular mural in person, climbing a staircase to the top of the tank to gaze inside. Artists Christina Angelina and Ease One create a starkly emotional contrast to the red and beige tones of the desert beyond the tank’s walls.

‘Flower House Detroit,’ conceived by Lisa Waud and realized with the help of florists from across the country, may be a temporary reclamation of an abandoned place, but it’s among the most striking installations for its contrast of life and decay. Each room had a different designer creating artful compositions of flowers, trees and even weeds, beautifying the space before it was deconstructed and repurposed. The land the neglected house stood on will be converted into a flower farm for Waud’s design business.

The idea of pairing monsters and abandoned buildings may sound like a nightmare, but German street artist Kim Köster makes both seem less scary with a series of fun paintings in Berlin. Choosing easily accessible public spaces as his canvas, the artist not only takes some of the fear out of dark derelict rooms in a physical sense, but also brings the to a much wider audience thanks to an interactive children’s picture book called Monzster.

Radical Aquatic Recreation: 10 Extreme Water Sports

Whether powered by jet packs or taking the capabilities of the human body to whole new depths (literally,) these water gadgets and activities multiply the fun and danger of more conventional water sports like surfing and wake boarding. A shockingly realistic shark-shaped personal watercraft jumps out of the water, an Iron Man suit propels you high up into the air and a water ‘wing’ lets you fly beneath the surface.

Designed to look like sailfish, killer whales, sharks and other large sea creatures, the Seabreacher is actually a two-person underwater vehicle dubbing itself “the ultimate diving machine.” It looks pretty insane when it bursts up out of the water in a dramatic leap, and has likely terrified more than a few nearby boaters when spotted doing so in the wild. An acrylic canopy and underwater view ports give the pilot and passenger a nearly 360-degree view as they ‘fly’ through the water. The dorsal fin acts like a snorkel during the 5-10 second periods in which you dive below the surface to a depth of 5-6 feet.

Have you ever gone wakeboarding and wished that you could dive below the surface of the water temporarily while being pulled behind the boat? A device called the Subwing makes that possible with a twistable joint in the center of a fiberglass or carbon fiber board towed behind a boat. Just angle the board so you dip under the water and stay under for as long as you like, using the bend in the board to steer, before popping back up.

Add a jet ski engine to a surfboard and what you get is a JetSurf, an ultralight carbon and kevlar board that can reach a top speed of 35mph and carry a 3-liter fuel tank that’ll take you on a 45-mile trip. It weighs about 30 pounds, it’s fairly compact and it floats. The experience is intended to be a sort of super-powered version of surfing. The prices start at $ 12K.

Free diving is incredibly dangerous and strikingly beautiful to watch, as evidenced by this video of fearless diver Guillame Néry reaching the bottom of the world’s deepest salt water blue hole attests. Dean’s Blue Hole is an amazing 603 feet deep. Free divers are able to hold their breath for far longer than most people, relying on the capacity of their own lungs rather than breathing apparatus like scuba gear. It’s undoubtedly exhilarating, and there are dozens of things that can go terribly wrong. The world’s greatest free diver, Natalia Molchanova, disappeared in the Balearic Sea in 2015 after failing to surface from a recreational dive. It’s likely that she was swept away by a strong underwater current.

Whether selling recreational marijuana or grand pianos that cost almost as much as a house, this eclectic mix of retail stores really sets off their products with eye-popping interior design schemes featuring unusual architectural elements. Some of the shops might even be at risk of outshining what they sell with modern sculptural displays, dramatic hanging staircases and faux truck facades.

The stainless wires on the facade of the flagship Asian Steinway & Sons showroom mimics those inside the luxury pianos on display, only slightly obscuring them and the people who test them out within the beautifully illuminated space. Designed by SALT, the shop’s main room mimics the living rooms of European manors.

Clear as Day: Crisp White at Optimist Eyewear Store

A perfectly clean, crisp white terrace that looks almost like a pristine glass cube from the street is tucked into a dingy alleyway in Greece as part of optical shop c_29 / optimist. The airy space by 314 Architecture Studio modernizes the classic Greek aesthetic, with the products tucked into prismatic sculptural furniture.

A creative firm called McBride company is anticipating the day when the sale of both medical and recreational marijuana becomes legal nationwide, and has designed a concept for a national chain of cannabis retails stores called Pineapple Express. “The industry needs to provide a sales experience that reflects the evolving perception of marijuana,” says CEO Pat McBride. “The store design and atmosphere we created offers consumers a space that incorporates all the elements of great retail design, but addresses the unique display and service challenges faced by the cannabis retail industry. Our goal was to make this a true retail experience, meaning customers should feel completely comfortable and entertained, while also safe and secure. Some elements of cannabis shops today have the opposite effect, especially when the focal point is a long consultation counter where customers must wait to be helped.”

Shoppers feel like they’re walking into a tropical greenhouse as they enter the Mit Mat Mama maternity store in Barcelona by architect Román Izquierdo Bouldstridge. Emphasizing a feeling of freshness, harmony and natural beauty, the store consists of a modular system of wooden ladders stretching up to the ceiling that are used to display plants. The scheme adds visual interest without blocking views of the entire space.

Vertical sheets of white fiberglass hang from the ceiling of SND Fashion Store in Chongqing, China to create an undulating canopy that utterly transforms the entire interior. Shanghai-based studio 3GATTI gets a little catty in their explanation for the design, saying “We used a very thin white translucent fiberglass material because of its fire resistance and the way it reacted to light, thus creating a ceiling landscape that would be a spectacular source of beauty and emptiness; perfect for every fashion victim.”

Urban Subversion: 13 Radical Examples of Guerrilla Housing

Vacant lots, billboards, rooftops and even dumpsters are hacked into inhabitable spaces in these examples of often-illegal guerrilla housing. All manner of urban surfaces can be subverted into safe, dry shelters, often taking examples in gray areas of local laws or flying under the radar simply because they blend so well into the city environment.

Belgian artist and hacktivist Karl Philips focuses on “themes such as gaps in legal, economic and social systems, the omnipresence of advertisement, unrestrained capitalism and consumerism, etc” so it’s no surprise that he decided to turn a billboard into an illegal parasite apartment. Invisible from the street, the apartment consists of a simple wooden platform and a clear plastic enclosure. Another more capitalism-friendly project in Mexico City attached a 170-square-foot house onto the back of a billboard as a residence for artists, who hand-painted the billboard for paper company Scribe.

Attach a specially-crafted plastic shelter to an air vent on a building and you’ve got an instant inflatable shelter for the homeless. Michael Rakowitz creates these ‘paraSITE shelters‘, which narrowly fit the legal definitions of temporary structures due to their size, on a budget of less than five dollars each.

Artist Gregory Kloehn turned an ordinary dumpster into a pop-up shelter with a working kitchen and toilet, storage and sleeping areas as well as a modular rooftop deck, outdoor shower, flower beds and even a bar. It took six months to modify the Brooklyn-based house, in which Kloehn actually lives part-time. Perhaps the ultimate in urban camouflage, the dumpster looks no different from any other trash container when it’s all closed up.

It may not be spacious, but artist Kevin Cyr’s pop-up camper cart takes advantage of ubiquitous shopping carts to offer a dry, portable place to sleep. When not in use, the whole thing folds down into an inconspicuous wooden box that fits within the cart.

Urban Surfing: City Dwellers Catch Radical Artificial Waves

Until recently, anyone who wanted to surf the artificial waves in a river in Munich’s English Garden had to do so under cover of night, with one eye on the shore watching out for police. But in the summer of 2010, Eisbach Munich was officially opened to qualified surfers, who must be pre-approved by the city before attempting to stay afloat in the often-freezing waters.

The need to test surfers’ abilities comes after an Australian student drowned while swimming in the river in 2007. While swimming is still forbidden, Eisbach has since become the world’s largest urban surfing spot among the world’s largest urban park.

The wave that permanently crests year-round was created by accident in 1972 after concrete blocks were submerged underwater to disrupt the current. It measures 12 feet across and can only accommodate one surfer at a time.

Crowds gather to watch as the surfers attempt to stay on top of the wave, never getting the break that would come when a natural wave in the ocean crests upon the shore and retreats.

Sigma unveils radical DP2 Quattro with re-thought ~19.6MP Foveon sensor

Sigma has revealed the next generation of its DP series of APS-C sensor, fixed focal length cameras, with the DP2 Quattro. The latest, 45mm-equivalent, model features dramatic styling and a fundamental re-think of the company’s Foveon multi-layer sensor design. The Quattro sensor still uses three layers to detect color information but now only captures its full, 19.6 million pixel resolution in the top layer, with lower two layers capturing 4.9MP of information each. The sensor will also appear in 28mm and 75mm equivalent DP1 Quattro an DP3 Quattro models.

You may have seen some strange and unique accommodations on AirBNB, but few hosts can boast something as unusual as Faktum Hotels, an unreal room-free resort in Sweden.

Their offerings are entirely out in the open air, doubling as an awareness-raising campaign for the city’s homeless and and actual alternative sleeping space for those same citizens.

So if not rooms, then what are you actually booking? A sleeping bag, or simply a secluded space … everywhere an actual vagabond or vagrant might occupy, including park benches, public restrooms, abandoned buildings, bridge underpasses and below bleachers.

And how much to reserve one of these temporary hobo hostels? The rate for each of these 10 surreal pseudo-spaces is just 10 Euros per night … proceeds of which go to charity work supported by Faktum Magazine.
