Photokina 2014: Quiet but significant

27 Sep

This year’s Photokina felt a little quiet, but it might have been the most significant in recent years. As well as major new DSLRs from Canon and Nikon, we also saw a slew of new large-sensor compact cameras and a smartphone – Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-CM1. Meanwhile, RED’s Epic Dragon pointed the way to the future with its 19MP Raw still images from 6K video footage. Click through for our take on the world’s biggest photographic tradeshow

Domestic Adventure Update: Sleep, Quiet & Relaxation

21 Aug

Sleep, quiet and relaxation are the three things I have not had in my month long blogging hiatus. As you can tell from the photo above that is because we have a new member of our household. Grant, my second son, arrived on the scene May 27th right between 2 holidays and 3 (nuclear) family birthdays (all with in 6 weeks of each other). Needless to say my wife and I have been elated that Grant is here, but to be honest we’ve been pretty tired.

Ah good times.

As you’d imagine I’m incredibly excited to introduce Grant to the natural world and photography as I have been with Blake. It’s an amazing process to hear the raw interpretation of our world from a child’s perspective. Not only do these innocent and candid interpretations of the world ground you, they help you see the world in new ways. Such experiences are a great reminder for myself to keep pushing for new visual and interpretive perspectives.

Quiet of the Fog

01 Aug

Quiet of the Fog, Yosemite National Park

One aspect of nature that I love is fog. Perhaps my love for fog is rooted in the fact I seldom saw it in my youth. Now every time I see it I can’t help but enjoy it. It’s not that I love being cold and wet, I merely enjoy the atmosphere it lends to any scene.

Fog is an instant game changer making the most ordinary of scenes seem mysterious. It is when you stop to watch the fog that it’s movement becomes most captivating. In remote locations this movement has unique quiet to it. The quiet of the fog combined with the sensation of its condensation on your skin connects you physically to the scene you’re witnessing. It’s as if the landscape before you reaches out to touch you.

A morning walk along the lakeside of HangZhou can be a wonderful and refreshing experience especially on a cool and beautiful day. It is surrounded by breathtaking scenery of emerald hills, woodland, rivers and colorful wildflowers while beautiful sounds of birds can be heard chirping by the tree top. Along the lakeshore, gentle wind blow against the willow trees creating a welcoming and pleasant environment for a leisure walk along the promenade. Many local folk likes to gather by the open spaces for daily exercise, chinese tai chi, fan dancing and socializing. While families would enjoy their day by taking their time out for a camp and picnic over the weekend to take a rest from their busy day. Visitors who enjoy tea can have a wonderful and relaxing time along the lakeside while sipping over a cup of local Chinese tea.

There is an old saying by the chinese, “There is heaven above, Suzhou and HangZhou below”, it is a statement to declare the indescribable beauty that can only be found in HangZhou West Lake. Throughout the year and in every season, people could enjoy while appreciating the changing landscape and colors from spring to fall.

A Quiet Snack

18 Aug

Sometimes I have trouble abiding silence, I want to fill it with words.  I used to daydream, when I was younger, before teachers at school would shame me for it, over and over again… so now I talk, to feel comfortable. One of the bad things about our schools… they force people like me to conform or reject.  I did both, simultaneously.  But it was painful at times.

Kianna, and people like here, are slowly showing me that it’s ok to be quiet.

She’s reminding all of us about something we used to know.  It’s important to daydream, maybe even more important than long division.
