The Olympus OM-D E-M10 was announced about a month ago, the third addition to the digital revival of the OM line. It lacks the weather sealing of its siblings but inherits a number of excellent features from the existing OM-D models. Sound enticing? We’ve gotten familiar with the E-M10 over the past few weeks. The full review is on the way but for now, read our shooter’s report, and compare the E-M10 to a growing list of cameras in our new studio test scene.

McCurry’s famous ‘Afghan girl’ portrait almost never published

21 Oct

Afghan-Girl-McCurry.jpg

Nearly everyone has seen photographer Steve McCurry’s striking 1985 National Geographic cover portrait of Afghan refugee Sharbat Gula, but it was nearly left on the cutting room floor. He revels the story behind the picture in his new book, “Untold: The Stories Behind the Photographs.” McCurry only took a handful of frames before the young girl got up. Editors at National Geographic came close to picking a different image for their cover, but made a change at the last minute.

Just published – a quick Pentax 645D sample gallery

17 Nov

Just Posted: A few weeks back we spent a little time with the Pentax 645D – just long enough to grab a small gallery of ‘real world’ samples using the FA 645 55mm F2.8 standard lens. The 40 megapixel 645D, which took an unprecedented 5 years to progress from announcement to production, is the company’s first digital medium format camera. We wanted to see how practical it was to use the 645D ‘in the field’ as a replacement for a smaller sensor SLR, and – aside from an aching shoulder after a day of lugging it around – we were pretty impressed with what we saw. Until we get the 645D back into the studio to complete our testing, check out our quick 24-shot gallery after the link (or click here to jump straight to the gallery page).

Sony SLT-A35 review published

22 Sep

We’ve published our review of the Sony SLT-A35. This latest model in Sony’s series of ‘translucent mirror’ cameras incorporates almost all the features of the original A33 and A55 but includes what Sony promises is an improved 16MP sensor, and handful of extra processing options. The only real losses compared to the A33 are the articulated rear screen and $ 50 from the MSRP of the 18-55mm lens kit, taking it down to $ 699. Is this enough to compete in the crowded entry-level segment? Read our review to find out.
