Adobe Premiere Pro can now natively decode ProRes Raw video files

Adobe has announced Premiere Pro (version 14.5) will now natively support ProRes Raw, finally opening up editing of Apple’s Raw video format to all Premiere Pro users.

Earlier this year, Adobe started selectively supporting ProRes Raw, but only for Windows users running Nvidia GPUs. With this new update, both macOS and Windows users will be able to edit ProRes Raw video regardless of what system or GPU your computer has packed inside.

The initial support is limited, in the sense you aren’t offered full control of ISO and White Balance settings as you are with Apple’s Final Cut Pro X, but it’s likely Adobe is working to get this functionality in place too. Adobe has also added ProRes Raw to LOG color space conversion.

As more cameras get ProRes Raw recording, most notably with the help of Atomos who’s already brought ProRes Raw support to more than 20 cameras via its Ninja V monitor/recorder, it’s nice to see Premiere Pro finally getting the ability to decode and work with the files.

Other improvements in the October 2020 release (version 14.5) of Premiere Pro include support for HDR workflows in Rec2100 PQ color space, improved hardware decoding when using AMD and Nvidia GPUS and faster audio pre-roll.

Atomos is working on a Ninja V update to bring 12-bit 4K/30p ProRes RAW to Nikon Z6 II, Z7 II cameras

The cameras haven’t even his the shelves of retailers yet and already Atomos has announced its Ninja V monitor/recorder will support ProRes RAW recording over HDMI on Nikon’s forthcoming Z6 II and Z7 II camera systems.

While both the Z6 II and Z7 II have respectable internal recording capabilities in their own right — 4K/60p for the Z7 II out of the box and with the Z6 II via a future firmware update — the addition of ProRes RAW recording further adds to the creative capabilities of Nikon’s latest mirrorless cameras.

Atomos says both the Z6 II and Z7 II will be able to output up to 4K/30p 12-bit ProRes RAW video over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V recorder when it receives an AtomOS firmware update later this year. Atomos also notes that Nikon’s N-Log profile is fully supported in its AtomHDR monitoring pipeline ‘with the ability to add built in 709 preview, custom 3D LUTs and LOG to HDR conversion for both monitoring and output.’

Atomos, Olympus working to bring ProRes RAW to E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III by end of year

Atomos and Olympus have teamed up to announce the duo is co-developing firmware updates that will enable ProRes RAW footage to be captured on the OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras when paired with the Atomos Ninja V over HDMI.

This partnership is the latest in many that have seen numerous cameras gain ProRes RAW output over HDMI when recording to an Atomos Ninja V recorder, including the Sigma fp, Fujifilm GFX100 and many others. The announcement doesn’t lay out the video specifications that will be able to be captured, nor a date we can expect the firmware updates to go live, but the press release says we can expect them before the end of 2020.

We’ll be sure to share an update article when the firmware updates go live later this year.

Atomos announces ProRes RAW support for Olympus OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras

September 15, Melbourne, Australia: Atomos is excited to announce co-development with Olympus of RAW recording over HDMI with the OM-D E-M1X and Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras. Together these powerful Olympus cameras and the Atomos Ninja V will record Apple ProRes RAW directly from the camera’s sensor.

Olympus users who love the OM-D family for its portability and in-body 5-axis image stabilization will get all the benefits of a ProRes RAW workflow – creative control to adjust the color and look of the video in post-production while extending brightness and shadow detail.

The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the image in HDR quality with a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing users to perfect their shot setup. The Ninja V then records the ProRes RAW data onto a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. When shooting is complete the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate offload and editing.

Atomos Ninja V adds ProRes RAW capture to GFX 100, Sigma fp over HDMI

Atomos has released the latest firmware update for its popular Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables ProRes RAW capture over HDMI with the Fujifilm GFX 100 and Sigma fp camera systems.

Fujifilm GFX 100

On a GFX 100 running firmware version 2.01 or later, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW video at up to 30p over HDMI. This marks the first time users can capture Raw footage on the large format camera.

If you don’t need the Raw video, the Atomos firmware update also enables 10-bit 422 ProRes and DNx 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) capture up to 30p or 4K DCI (4096?×?2160) at up to 24p. Multiple monitoring modes have also been added for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

Sigma fp

Moving onto the Sigma fp, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit ProRes RAW at 4K DCI up to 24p or 4K UHD up to 30p over HDMI using the full width of the sensor. You can even capture 120p (119.88p) 12-bit ProRes Raw if you knock the resolution down to 1080.

10-bit ProRes 422 and DNx can also be recorded at 30p and 120p (119.88p) at 4K UHD and 1080 resolutions, respectively, if you don’t need Raw footage. Like the GFX 100, multiple monitoring modes have also been included for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

Known limitations

SIGMA fp

• In some instances when using LUTs banding artifacts may be observed in some areas of the display on the Ninja V for

4KUHD video modes. (This behaviour is only limited to the display of the Ninja V and not the recordings).

• On occasion if the camera is. powered down whilst connect to the Ninja V and set to RAW mode, the Ninja V may enter a locked state.

– Switch between Record and Play back mode, Unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI, or Power cycling Switching will all resolve this issue.

• ISO metadata reported in Final Cut Pro X may occasionally be incorrect if using 1/3 EV ISO adjustments on the camera. – Incorrect for camera ISO setting 1000, 8000, 16000.

• Update in future firmware release for camera.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

FujiFilm GFX100

• Interaction with the EVF eye sensor may cause freeze frame or black frames in the recording. – Not using the EVF or tilting the LCD screen can resolve the issue.
– Removal of the EVF from the camera is advised to avoid issue.

• White balance metadata is not reported in Final Cut Pro X.
– Update in future firmware release for camera and Ninja.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

General

• RAW to HDR HDMI output – PQ / HDR10 output conversion may appear slightly incorrect.

Final Cut Pro X 10.4.9 adds ProRes Raw camera setting adjustments, improved vertical editing and more

Apple has released its latest update to Final Cut Pro X, bringing with it a number of new features, including the ability to finally adjust ProRes Raw camera settings.

Although it’s listed under ‘Other new features,’ one of the most welcomed additions in the update is the ability to adjust ProRes Raw camera settings, such as ISO, color temperature and exposure compensation in the new controls within the inspector.

These new options address what was a big hole in the ProRes Raw workflow with FCPX. We asked our own Jordan Drake of DPReview TV for his thoughts on these new additions and he had the following to say:

’Working with ProRes Raw was initially jarring, as it did not respond like other photographic or cinematic raw formats. White balance and ISO were not directly adjustable, and attempting to use the built in tools to simulate those adjustments often led poor colors or noisy shadows. This new update allows adjustments to white balance, exposure and ISO and will hopefully allow ProRes Raw to behave more like R3D Raw, or Apple’s primary competition Blackmagic BRaw. Camera manufacturers aside from Blackmagic seem to be moving towards ProRes Raw, so this added functionality will be a big benefit for many current and future cameras.’

Also new is an improved proxy workflow with the ability to generate proxy media in custom frame sizes (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, or full resolution), the ability to create proxies in either ProRes Proxy or H.264 and the ability to create a proxy-only copy of a library to reduce the size of a project.

It’s now easier to compose footage for use in vertical-preferred platforms, such as Snapchat, Instagram TV, TikTok and others.

Apple has also added a number of new social media tools within FCPX, including automated project transformation for square of vertical delivery via the new ‘Smart Conform’ tool, the ability to view footage outside the viewer boundary for easier composing in non-traditional formats, as well as custom overlays for guides and a new ‘Duplicate Project As’ option that works with the new ‘Smart Conform’ tool to make creating videos for multiple platforms easier.

For other minor feature updates and bug fixes, head on over to Apple’s changelog for FCP 10.4.9. The update should be available as a free update in the macOS App Store if you’ve already purchased FCPX.

Atomos releases full Ninja V firmware update for recording 5.9K 12-bit ProRes Raw with Panasonic S1H

Atomos has announced the full firmware update for its Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables 5.9K ProRes Raw video capture from a Panasonic S1H.

It’s been just one week since the pre-release beta firmware was released alongside Panasonic’s S1H 2.1 firmware update, but the full version is up and ready to go. The full firmware update enables Ninja V units to record 12-bit ProRes Raw video over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. Also new is a 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode that makes it easier to record footage shot on anamorphic lenses.

To accompany the new recording options, Panasonic has released a new LUT that can be downloaded for free on its website. The Atomos Ninja V firmware update (AtomOS 10.52) can be downloaded from the Ninja V product page, under the ‘Support’ tab.

Last week Atomos launched a Pre-Release Beta for Ninja V users to try out on their Panasonic LUMIX S1H. Today Atomos announces the full firmware update for the Ninja V.

From today Ninja V & Panasonic LUMIX S1H users will be able to record:

Simply stunning 12-bit RAW

The Ninja V captures the unprocessed highly detailed 12-bit RAW signal files directly from the full frame sensor of the S1H over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. These unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every detail from the S1H. The resulting ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows.

Anamorphic RAW

More and more cinematographers are now choosing to shoot with anamorphic lenses and the Ninja V and S1H combination caters to them with the new 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode. An even bigger world of cinematic opportunities opens up as the Ninja V and S1H can now be used as an A-camera or smaller B-camera on an anamorphic RAW production.

Improved color pipeline

LUMIX S1H ProRes RAW files recorded to the Ninja V can now benefit from an improved color pipeline in Apple Final Cut Pro X. Panasonic have published a new LUT based workflow that allows the enhanced potential of ProRes RAW files captured from the LUMIX S1H to be realised in the NLE software.

Ninja V advantage

The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple when the camera is attached with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the RAW image accurately in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing them to perfect their RAW video. The Ninja V then records the ProRes RAW data onto a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. When shooting is complete the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate offload and editing.

ProRes RAW the new standard

In addition to their ground-breaking combination of flexibility and performance, Apple ProRes RAW files are smaller than other RAW files – simplifying and accelerating file transfer, media management, and archiving. Even with the new higher 5.9K resolution, ProRes RAW files from the S1H can easily be edited on most modern Macs. ProRes RAW is fully supported in Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight and Grass Valley Edius.

Sony a7S III to get 4K/60p ProRes Raw capture over HDMI with Atomos’ Ninja V monitor/recorder

To coincide with the announcement of Sony’s a7S III, Atomos has announced it will release a firmware update for its Ninja V recorder/monitor that will enable it to record 4K/60p ProRes Raw video over HDMI.

The 16-bit linear Raw video output of the a7S III is sent via HDMI to the Ninja V recorder, which then compresses and records the video as 12-bit ProRes Raw at up to 4K/60p. The Ninja V will also be able to record the a7S III’s 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI video output as 10-bit 4:2:2 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4K/60p in ProRes or DNx codecs.

Melbourne, Australia – July 28, 2020 – Atomos are today announcing RAW recording at up to 4Kp60 via HDMI from Sony’s new Alpha 7S III (ILCE-7SM3) full-frame mirrorless camera to the Ninja V HDR monitor-recorder.

The Alpha 7S III has a state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor and the Ninja V can record its full dynamic range in Apple ProRes RAW for maximum detail and latitude in post-production. The RAW files are optimal for HDR finishing, or for greater flexibility in SDR (Rec.709), giving stunning results in either. Images are recorded directly to affordable, reliable AtomX SSDmini or other compatible SSD drives for quick transfer to your editing system.

Unrestricted RAW recording
RAW recording with the Ninja V from the Alpha 7S III is only limited by your imagination. The combination will record ProRes RAW video for as long as you have disk space on your SSD and power for the camera and recorder. The active cooling employed means that internal record time limitations can be bypassed making a perfect setup for performances and long interviews. Optionally, RAW video can also be captured on the Ninja V at the same time as compressed video is recorded internally to memory card on the Alpha 7S III, providing several workflow options and a useful backup

Making low light RAW video a reality
Alpha 7S III low light performance is especially impressive, with the data from the camera’s large photosites making recording RAW in dim conditions a practical option. The Alpha 7S III also has 5-axis optical image stabilisation that is available while shooting RAW video, allowing for amazingly stable and detailed handheld RAW shots.

16-bit Linear RAW perfectly captured as 12-bit Log RAW
The data-rich 16-bit linear RAW output of the Alpha 7S III is compressed and recorded in the Ninja V as 12-bit ProRes RAW at up to 4Kp60. The result is a high quality ProRes RAW file that combines the superb visual quality of the Alpha 7S III with the workflow advantages of RAW and the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. One key benefit, especially in low light, is that the ProRes RAW files allow you to take fine control of how noise reduction and sharpening is applied to images, tuning these precisely for each shot.

A defined standard
Atomos believes ProRes RAW is the new standard for RAW video capture, which is supported by an ever growing number of cameras outputting RAW over HDMI to the Ninja V. The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. Both ProRes RAW, and the higher bandwidth, less compressed ProRes RAW HQ are supported. Manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. 10-bit 4kp60 Apple ProRes or Avid DNx for extended recording
For the first time in a mirrorless camera from Sony there is also a 10-bit 422 HDMI video output option available. The Ninja V and other current Atomos monitor-recorders can record this as 10-bit 422 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4Kp60 into production ready ProRes or DNx codecs. These provide long record times and practical data rates when the additional flexibility of RAW is not required. This is ideal for situations where the camera needs to integrate into an established post workflow, or a fast turnaround is needed.

HDR monitoring perfection
The accurate 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display of the Ninja V allows users to view the Alpha 7S III RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats or view natively in Sony’s S-Log profile and used with LUTs. The monitor offers touchscreen access to tools like waveform, magnification and peaking so users can check focus and make adjustments to get the perfect HDR or SDR shot.

Launch film from filmmaker Philip Bloom
Renowned filmmaker Philip Bloom has shot a short film titled ‘The Paddleboarder’ to test the ProRes RAW capabilities of the Alpha 7S III with the Ninja V. Shot on the river Thames in just one day it clearly demonstrates just how filmic the RAW images look. In his time with the camera he has also shot ProRes RAW in various lighting conditions including near darkness.

He said: “Sony’s Alpha 7S III is incredibly powerful and does pretty much everything I need from a camera. Having the ability to record RAW over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V is the icing on the cake. Not only can I record at full quality 10-bit 4K internally to the camera’s memory cards, I can simultaneously record 12-bit ProRes RAW to an SSD which gives me more flexibility to grade and bypass things like the in-camera sharpening and noise reduction. This is especially invaluable when shooting at very high ISO where working with RAW allows me to adjust the noise in post processing with much more precision.”

Ninja V users will receive a free AtomOS update to enable RAW recording over HDMI from the Alpha 7S III. This is set to be available in September 2020.

ProRes Raw video capture delayed for Lumix S1H, but firmware v2.0 still set to ship next week

Videographers waiting to be able to record 5.9K ProRes Raw video footage from the Lumix S1H to their Atomos Ninja V will have to wait a bit longer as statements from both camera and recorder manufacturers have confirmed that while the expected firmware release will go ahead on Monday, May 25, Raw video won’t be included.

Atomos says a technical issue is the cause and that the delay will be ‘slight,’ while Panasonic concentrates on the other new features firmware v2.0 will bring to users. Both companies say they’re working together to rectify the problem.

There’s no indication what the problem is, but only that it cropped up in beta testing and that both companies want to ensure recording quality is at its best before the firmware is released. A new release date for the raw video feature will be announced ‘shortly.’

Firmware V2.0 for the Panasonic S1H adds ProRes Raw video capture capability when paired with an Atomos Ninja V recorder.

While the v2.0 firmware won’t have its headline feature when released on Monday, it will still offer these new features:

LUMIX S1H Firmware Version 2.0 (*RAW video data output function is not included.)

  • Down converted output over HDMI during [6K]/[5.9K]/[5.4K] video recording is available.
  • In Creative Video mode, it is now possible to disable the operation of starting/stopping video recording by pressing a shutter button.
  • In Creative Video mode, it is now possible to set [Rec Quality (My List)] from the control panel.
  • The value of noise reduction in [V-Log] in Photo Style has been expanded to [-1], designed to suppress ghosting or afterimages that could have previously occurred in some situations.
  • It is possible to prevent the enlarged view window of MF Assist to be output over HDMI.
  • There were cases where colour banding appeared in 4:2:0/10-bit video recording in some situations. This bug has been minimised.
  • There were cases where the REC RUN time code did not count up when the video was not recorded on an SD Memory Card but was recorded on an external device over HDMI. This bug has been fixed.
  • It is now possible to set [AF+MF] in AFC mode.
  • It is now possible to assign functions to the lens’ Fn buttons when the Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200) is mounted.
  • It is now possible to assign function to the Fn buttons of Sigma L-Mount interchangeable lenses.
  • When attaching a lens using the Sigma MC-21 mount converter and [Image Stabilizer] > [Lens] is set to ON , Body I.S. (Image Stabiliser) suppresses roll movement.
  • [Backlight Illumination Period] has been added to the menu of Status LCD. [ON1] prevents the LCD backlight to be turned off.
  • It is now possible to select the card slot to save the JPEG images developed by in-camera RAW processing.
  • [0.5 SEC] has been added for an option of [Duration Time (photo)] in [Auto Review].
  • [Off (Disable Press and Hold)] can be assigned to the Fn button. It disables operation when the button is long-pressed.
  • The Fn button can be used for checking aperture effect while the button is pressed.
  • To prevent improper operation, touch-control is disabled for [Delete All] operation in playback mode. Only cursor buttons can be used for [Delete All] operation.
  • There were rare cases where the camera froze during [Segmented File Recording] or during recording at 400 Mbps under a particular set of conditions including the type of SD Card used. This phenomenon has been improved.
  • Aperture and shutter speed can be controlled using front/rear dials when the rear monitor is set to OFF.
  • There were cases where F stop value control failed depending on the maximum F stop value when non-Panasonic L-Mount lens is mounted. This bug has been fixed.

The new firmware will be downloadable for free via the Panasonic Japan support pages.

Atomos Ninja V and LUMIX S1H RAW firmware delay

The firmware updates enabling the much-anticipated Atomos Ninja V and Panasonic LUMIX S1H RAW over HDMI combination have unfortunately been slightly delayed from the original 25th May release schedule, to ensure the highest possible level of RAW recording.

An unforeseen technical issue has come to light in the final rounds of beta testing that needs rectification prior to shipping. The companies are working together to complete the development as soon as possible. We apologise to our mutual customers waiting for the functions this release enables.

Please note that Panasonic will be releasing Ver 2.0 firmware on May 25th with various improvements to camera functions, however will not include the planned RAW HDMI output feature. Atomos will release its Ninja V AtomOS for LUMIX S1H HDMI RAW in-line with Panasonic’s RAW output firmware.
