Peak Design, the camera carry company based in California, launched their Travel Tripod in early April.

And they donated 100% of the profits to charity.

The Travel Tripod has been making waves ever since it was funded on Kickstarter, where the promise of a stable, compact tripod drew in 12 million USD from nearly 30,000 donors.

Fast-forward a year, and the Travel Tripod was ready to launch as two separate products:

A carbon fiber option and an aluminum alloy option, both offering unprecedented compactness and stability as a pro-level travel tripod solution.

Then, in the weeks prior to the launch, Peak Design announced its intentions to donate all profits to two charities:

The CDC Foundation, for COVID-19 relief, and Climate Neutral, an organization that works to combat climate change.

As explained by the Peak Design CEO:

Now more than ever is the time for us to act on our core values and ensure that our employees, contractors and retail partners can find economic shelter in a product we’ve spent years developing…Peak Design is also in a unique position to offer financial support to those that are solving the problem. To be able to donate in a time of need speaks volumes to the company we’ve built over the last ten years.

Now that the launch is complete, Peak Design has released their numbers; the company sold over 2000 tripods, culminating in a whopping $ 218,000 USD donated to the CDC Foundation and Climate Neutral.

Peak Design gives $200K+ of profits from its Travel Tripod launch to coronavirus, climate charities

Bag manufacturer Peak Design has donated 100% of the profits it made from the launch of its first tripod to charities dealing with the coronavirus response and with climate change. The four-day launch saw the company sell 2265 units of its new Travel Tripod, which generated $ 218,150.

The funds were then split equally between the non-profits Centers for Disease Control Foundation which is assisting in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Climate Neutral organization that helps companies to reduce their carbon foot print. Peak Design is actually a founder of Climate Neutral, which has so far certified 105 brands as being climate neutral, including Kickstarter, and is helping numerous others to achieve this goal.

The development of the Travel Tripod was funded by a Kickstarter campaign, and over the launch period, the aluminum alloy version generated $ 75,110 in profits while the carbon fiber version made $ 143,040 after selling 110 units more.

Canon’s Q1 financial report shows Imaging Systems net sales and profits are down 13.9%, 80.6% YoY

Canon has released its first-quarter (Q1) financial report, revealing just how bad the COVID-19 pandemic has affected its bottom line and suggesting it’s only going to get worse before it gets better.

The report starts off by stating on its ‘Key Message’ summary page that the COVID-19 pandemic has ‘completely [changed the] global economic landscape’ with the following bullet point saying the ‘global economy faces worst recession since the Great Depression’ due to the ongoing pandemic.

Across the board, Canon saw a 9.5% drop in net sales and an 18.7% decline in operating profit for Q1 (January 1 through April 23), year-over-year (YoY). But even those numbers look great in comparison to those found within Canon’s Imaging Systems division, which accounts for camera and inkjet printer sales.

The report shows net sales and operating profit for Q1 within the Imaging System division is down 13.9% and 80.6%, respectively, YoY. Further split up, Canon states its net sales are down 24.8% YoY specifically for cameras, while its inkjet printer net sales were actually up 7.3%. Despite the current situation, Canon hasn’t changed its projections which currently have net sales and operating profits down 2.5% and up 11.5%, respectively for the entire 2020 fiscal year.

That may very well change though, as Canon expects its second quarter (Q2) to be even worse, as Canon’s current downward trajectory didn’t even start until mid-way through Q1. Combined with the uncertainty of when the COVID-19 pandemic will begin to subside, Canon says it’s difficult to provide accurate estimates of future financials and even clarifies that once the global economy is back on the rise, it’s unlikely cameras will see an immediate return to normal sales.

In addition to the impact on supply, sales of interchangeable-lens cameras were also greatly affected. One after another, live events were canceled or postponed and chances to use cameras decreased. In addition to this, we believe it will take time to see a recovery in the demand for cameras, which are considered luxury items, even after the global economic turmoil has subsided.’

Whatever happens, it seems Canon has little intent on slowing down. In its summary of the results, Canon says it ‘will steadily push forward [its] strategy that focuses on models for professionals and advanced-amateurs to maintain medium- to longterm profitability,’ an obvious nod to the forthcoming EOS R5 camera, as well as new RF lenses on the horizon.

Something worth keeping in mind, as with all financial reports, is that numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. There is plenty going on behind-the-scenes and there is a lot of grey area within the net sales and operating profits within any given division.

For this particular Q1 report, a standout example of this is in the dramatic discrepancy between the net sales and operating profit within Canon’s Imaging Systems division. While we obviously can’t confirm this to be the case, the 80.6% decline in operating profit could very well be due, at least in part, to the research, development and marketing expenses of the EOS R5 and other professional and ‘advanced amateur’ camera systems Canon plans to release in the near future. It’s shaping up to be an industry-shaking camera based on the currently-known specs and actively developing such a system doesn’t come cheap.

Apple captures 79 percent of global smartphone profits with 14.5 percent market share

According to Flickr the iPhone is the most popular camera(s) in the world and even 10 years after the original model was launched, iPhone continues to generate enormous profits for Apple. According to research from Strategy Analytics, that was obtained by The Korea Herald, in 2016 the iPhone captured 79 percent of profits in the global smartphone market, at a market share of only 14.5 percent. In absolute numbers that is $ 44.9 billion out of a $ 53.7 billion total profit.

Apple’s biggest rival Samsung leads the market share ranking in front of Apple at 20.7 percent but only grabs 14.6 percent of the profit, amounting to $ 8.3 billion. This is a similar picture to previous years when, thanks to very high margins, Apple was able to claim a much bigger proportion of smartphone profits than its market share would suggest. 

With the upcoming iPhone 8 models expected to bring a range of innovative features at what are projected to be high price points, the situation is unlikely to change in 2017. If Apple continues to invest profits into camera development, we could all benefit from its success.

Interchangeable lens camera sales steady as Canon profits plunge

Canon calls out the EOS 80D as a driver for strong unit sales in the interchangeable lens camera market.

Canon Japan reported flat ILC unit sales as one of the bright points in first quarter reports that saw a 17.5% fall in net income. A strengthening Yen, poor performance in the laser printer business and continued decline in compact camera sales combined to give the company a tough quarter.

Overall, digital camera sales are down 12%, due in large part to a 22% decline in the dying compact camera market, though Canon cites its G-series as a bright spot. Interchangeable lens camera sales were flat compared to Q1 2015, propped-up by strong sales of the EOS 80D and gains for the M3 and M10 mirrorless cameras in Asia. Interchangeable lens cameras account now account for 49% of total unit sales and 84% of the company’s revenue.

While delivering ‘flat’ numbers might not sound very positive, figures provided by the Camera & Imaging Product Association show a nearly 10% year-on-year industry-wide decline in ILC unit shipments, as well as 17% YoY reduction in SLR shipments. In other words, Canon isn’t doing quite as poorly as it may sound just looking at the numbers.

Looking ahead to 2016 as a whole, Canon expects compact camera sales to drop 24%, though more expensive models like the G-series will help protect margins. The company states that it hopes to increase profitability of this line ‘through the standardization of parts and other measures.’ It also says it expects unit sales of ILCs to fall by 7% across the year. But, while it has slightly lowered its projections for income from its imaging business for 2016, nearly all of the reduction comes from the expectation that the Yen will stay strong, lowering the value of overseas sales.
