Press release:

The Next Generation of Canon’s Instant Camera Printer, IVY CLIQ+2 and IVY CLIQ2, Encourage Snap and Print Stickable Memories – In an Instant

Pre-Cut Circle Sticker Paper also Introduced, Taking prints with an IVY product to Another Dimension

How long is an instant? It could be long enough to snap the camera shutter at the right moment, but short enough to instantly print a photo from your compatible smartphone and share it with friends. In the essence of capturing, printing and sticking your photos, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the next generation of IVY products: The IVY CLIQ+2 Instant Camera Printer + App and IVY CLIQ2 Instant Camera Printer. Designed with fun at their core and an all-in-one package, the new IVY CLIQ2 instant camera printers boast new features and print color quality improvements.

“This next phase in the IVY product line is a direct result of what the end-user is passionate about when it comes to instant camera printers. Expressing individual style, instant access to printing and the option to stick photos are what make the new IVY products exciting for Gen-Z and Millennial consumers who are looking to think beyond their smartphone’s photography capabilities,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, executive vice president of the Canon U.S.A., Inc. Imaging Technologies & Communications Group.

IVY CLIQ+2 Instant Camera Printer + App
True to its predecessor, the instant camera printer + app is equipped with an eight-megapixel1 camera and a selfie mirror surrounded by a glowing light ring of LEDs. The CLIQ+2 also connects to a compatible smartphone and the Canon Mini Print app2. Packed full of fun filters and borders – which are available with seasonal and celebratory themes – the app lets users customize and personalize their prints. Snap-happys also have the option to print from an SD card and the now available Live View allows users to check the image before clicking.

Though the CLIQ+2 is small, it is mighty with the “2 in 1” ability to both snap a photo and print a photo which also doubles as a sticker – if you so choose. Simply peel off the photo backing and stick wherever you like. Don’t let the slim and sleek design fool you – upping the instant camera printer + app ante, the new CLIQ+2 +app has new fresh features to channel all that creative energy, including:

* Three modes directly built into the camera to snap photos, such as:
o Landscape
o Portrait
o Selfie
* Built-in frame and filters – available directly from the camera

Adding another layer of creativity, Zink Pre-Cut Circle Sticker paper is a new consumable to use with the CLIQ+2 Instant Camera Printer +App. Through the Canon Mini Print app2, the consumer simply selects the “Pre-Cut Sticker” layout option, and then can edit their circular formatted photo to their liking and instantly print.

Available in Rose Gold and Midnight Navy, the CLIQ+2 Instant Camera + App will instantly make a sticking impression on friends and family!

IVY CLIQ2 Instant Camera Printer
Built with a five-megapixel1 camera, automatic-flash and the coveted selfie mirror – users can click, print and stick in an instant. New for the CLIQ2 are the built-in borders and filters that are accessible right from the camera – no app connection is required, and three new matte colors: Petal Pink, Turquoise and Charcoal.

Pricing and Availability
The Canon IVY CLIQ+2 Instant Camera Printer + App and Canon IVY CLIQ2 Instant Camera Printer are scheduled to be available for in-store purchase in September 2020 at an estimated retail price of $ 149.99* and $ 99.99*, respectively. Epson announces new and improved 13″ SureColor P700, 17″ P900 photo printers

22 Apr

Epson has announced a pair of new SureColor photo printers, the SureColor P700 and the SureColor P900. These printers print up to 13″ and 17″ wide respectively and are replacing the SureColor P600 and P800 printers in Epson’s lineup.

The P700 and P900 introduce a variety of new features, some of which were introduced in the large format SureColor P7570 and P9570 printers Epson announced last October. Like these larger printers, the P700 and P900 include a new internal light for checking on your prints as they’re being made and a 4.3″ touch screen control panel. While the P700 and P900 do not have the 12 channel print head of their larger siblings, they do include a new 10 channel MicroPiezo AMC Print Head which features dedicated channels for Matte Black and Photo Black ink. This is a big deal for Epson printers as previous generations of printers required time-consuming (and ink-consuming) black ink switching when moving from glossy to matte photo paper.

Shown here is the ink set for the Epson SureColor P700 printer. These cartridges are 25mL each. The cartridges for the P900 are larger and are 50mL each. Image credit: Epson

The SureColor P700 and P900 printers include a new set of Epson UltraChrome PRO10 inks. Epson states that the new inks deliver up to a 6 percent wider color gamut than the P600 and P800 printers. Further, they include a new violet ink channel, which will improve the appearance of blues, violets and purples in your prints. Epson is known for their industry-leading print permanence, and the new ink set continues this trend, promising longevity up to 200 years for color prints and 400 years for black and white prints.

Speaking of black and white prints, the Epson P700 and P900 include a new Carbon Black printing mode, which increases the DMAX by up to 11 percent versus the SureColor P800. The special driver mode is optimized for glossy and metallic glossy media and produces what Epson calls a “rich, ‘wet’ looking black.” This mode uses the existing Light Gray ink channel and does not require a dedicated ink channel, such as Canon’s Chroma Optimizer.

Considering the printers themselves, let’s look at the new 4.3″ touchscreen user interface. This new control panel is user customizable, including in terms of color and the information displayed. The panel can also show a live preview of the image you are printing. Settings shown on the touchscreen panel include the internal light option, network settings, errors and warnings, print job status and remaining time, media type and loading options, ink levels and more. Regarding network settings, the SureColor P700 and P900 printers include new 2.4 and 5 GHz wireless functionality.

The SureColor P700 and P900 printers are also much more compact than their predecessors. They are up to 30 percent smaller than the printers they are replacing. In fact, the new SureColor P900, despite printing up to 17″ wide rather than 13″ wide, is the same size as the outgoing SureColor P600. Specifically, the P700 is 20″ wide and the P900 is 24″ wide. They have respective minimum depths of 20.8″ and 23.1″.

As mentioned, the SureColor P700 supports 13″ wide media. Core media up to 2″ is supported. The P700 includes an include rear roll media feed, allowing for roll printing up to 10 ft. long. When loading sheet media from the top, the P700 can hold between 10 and 30 sheets at a time. There is also no need for a second Fine Art tray anymore; you can load all accepted paper via the single top load tray. The printer can accept media up to 1.5mm thick.

The SureColor P900 accepts 17″ wide media and supports both 2″ and 3″ cored roll media via an optional enclosed roll media adapter. Like the P700, there is a single top lead sheet tray now, which can accept between 10 and 30 sheets of paper and papers up to 1.5mm thick. In the case of both the P700 and P900, there is no built-in cutter.

To summarize, the key features of the new Epson SureColor P700 and P900 printers are as follows:

  • UltraChrome PRO10 10-color ink technology with up to a 6 percent wider color gamut than the SureColor P600 and P800 printers.
  • New MicroPiezo AMC print head with dedicated channels for photo black and matte black. This means no more black ink switching when changing paper types.
  • Carbon Black Overcoat technology results in improved black density on glossy media.
  • Dramatically smaller physical size compared to the P600 and P800 printers.
  • New 4.3″ touchscreen control panel.
  • Improved media feeding options.

The Epson SureColor P700 and P900 printers are now available to order with shipment expected to begin in early May. The estimated MSRP for the new P700 and P900 printers are $ 799 and $ 1,195 respectively.

It’s portable, with great ease-of-use, and works great with smartphones.

It has an attractive design with a high-quality build made from soft plastic. It’s expertly constructed, as it should be with its premium price tag.

The device measures 6.1×6.1×3.7 inches (weighs 1.3 pounds) in total, meaning it can fit in most backpacks.

The Fujifilm Instax SP-3 has a rechargeable battery. LED lights on the printer let you know how many shots you have remaining before having to recharge the printer. It also has a reprint button so you can easily reprint the same image as many times as you like without having to go through the app each time.

The app is attractive and intuitive and has a history section, too, so you can go back and easily print photos you’ve previously printed.

Downsides aside, the print quality is still relatively good. It prints in a 2.1×3.4 inch format and takes about 30 seconds to print.

Also, the app delivers filters and customizations before printing.

CAMERADACTYL creator launches Kickstarter campaign offering camera files for 3D printers

31 Dec

Ethan Moses, creator of the Homonculus 69 camera introduced last summer, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for CAMERADACTYL Brancopan, a 3D-printed panoramic camera that supports Mamiya Press lenses and 35mm film. Specifically, Moses is seeking funds to cover the costs of releasing the STL files for the camera, enabling 3D printer owners to print and assemble their own cameras.

In his Kickstarter campaign, Moses explains that increased demand for his cameras has resulted in considerable time spent printing, assembling and shipping the units. This has taken up time that would otherwise be spent researching and developing additional cameras.

According to Moses, if the Kickstarter campaign reaches its $ 12,000 initial goal, he will release the STL files for the Brancopan camera to Kickstarter backers first, then, later on, he will release them to the general public on May 1, 2020. As well, the files will be joined by videos that teach DIYers how to print the components, assemble the camera, calibrate it and then use it.

Moses explains on Kickstarter:

This Kickstarter is my shot in the dark, my test to see if people will pay for the R&D on an open-source project in a specific way. I am not sure that this will work, or how people will feel about it, but I do know that if the Kickstarter should fail, nobody gets charged anything and I can always go back to selling cameras through the mail, but if it does work it could change the way I work and the projects that I get to tackle, and the types of cameras and photographic tools available to the public now, and in the future.

The released files, assuming the campaign progresses to that point, will be licensed for personal use only. The estimated delivery date for Kickstarter backers is January 2020. Some Kickstarter pledge options include laser cut film counter dials, video chat troubleshooting and more.

Disclaimer: Remember to do your research with any crowdfunding project. DPReview does its best to share only the projects that look legitimate and come from reliable creators, but as with any crowdfunded campaign, there’s always the risk of the product or service never coming to fruition.

Epson reveals SureColor P7570, P9570 wide-format printers that offer ‘museum quality’ prints

03 Oct

Epson has expanded its SureCore P-Series line of printers with the new wide-format SureColor P7570 and SureColor P9570 models offering 24in and 44in print sizes, UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink, and PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead tech. Epson’s Reed Hecht calls the P7570 and P9570 its ‘most advanced printers to date.’

Both printer models feature dedicated nozzles for Matte and Photo Black ink, which eliminates ink switching and improves overall printing speeds. According to Epson, the new 6.6cm (2.6in) PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead combined with the new 12-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink enables these models to print up to 2.4 times faster than the previous models.

Other features include a new print mode called Black Enhanced Overcoat offering improved DMAX for what Epson says is better sharpness and wider contrast ratio on glossy prints, as well as a 4.3in customizable color touchscreen, support for the optional Epson SpectroProofer, a built-in LED light for viewing prints as they’re printing, and a sealed roll media door designed to better protect against dust.

Talking about what users can expect from these two models is Wilhelm Imaging Research director of research Henry Wilhelm, who said:

Preliminary data for the Epson 12-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment inks in the new SureColor P7570 and P9570 create stunning museum-quality prints with WIR Display Permanence Ratings that will equal or exceed the ratings achieved by the current UltraChrome HDX inks of up to 200 years for color prints and up to 400 years for B&W. Prints framed with UV-absorbing acrylic – and those displayed under LED illumination – will achieve significantly higher ratings.

Epson plans to showcase its new printers from October 3 to 5 at PRINT19 in Chicago. Both models will launch in December at around $ 4,695 USD (P7570) and $ 6,595 (P9570).

Both models will be available in 24-inch and 44-inch formats with onboard vertical trimmers, new HP Pixel Control color technology, and a redesigned poster application.

According to HP, the new Z Series printers are able to print 2.5 times faster than the DesignJet Z3200 Photo Printer while utilizing fewer inks, the end result being improved performance and reduced costs. The company claims these new large-format printers offer the “fastest printing capabilities available on the market today.”

The DesignJet Z6 printer is designed specifically for Geographical Information Systems (GIS) users and creators, as well as anyone else in need of water- and fade-resistant large-format prints. Canon launches refillable ink printers in the UK

16 Jan

Canon has announced that it will introduce a series of printers that are fitted with ink tanks designed so that users can refill the inks themselves. In move that might be interpreted as an “if you can’t beat them, join them” attitude, the company will release four models in the new Pixma G range, each of which has four built-in tanks for black, cyan, magenta and yellow ink.

The company will also sell bottles of ink so that users can refill the printers without having to buy individual cartridges—they will also, in theory, save money.

The new printers will be filled via 70ml bottles of colored dye ink which cost £10, and a 135ml bottle of black pigment ink that will cost £13. This makes the colored ink 13p per ml and the black 9.5p per ml compared with the 200p per ml that UK consumers pay for ink for the Pixma MG series, and 106p paid for 1ml of ink that’s used in the Pixma Pro range.

It’s worth noting, however, that Canon hasn’t made any print-life claims with these inks, and the printers are being marketed as general-purpose photo-capable machines rather than photo-specialist printers, so perhaps we shouldn’t expect the same quality.

The Pixma G series consists of four models that range from basic printer to a multi-functional four-in-one (print, copy, scan and fax) with the second two models offering Wi-Fi connectivity and printing from a smartphone app.
