Leica will increase its prices in the US starting May 1st

05 Apr

According to a report from Red Dot Forum by Leica Store Miami, Leica will increase the price of most of its products in the US starting May 1st. The site has published a list of the 66 products that will become more expensive next month, which includes most Leica M cameras and nearly all M lenses—for example, the Leica M10 with chrome finish will increase in price by $ 400, from $ 6,895 to $ 7,295.

You can check out the full list here, but according to the report you’ll pay:

  • $ 200 to $ 500 more for Leica M cameras
  • $ 100 to $ 600 more for Leica M lenses
  • $ 100 to $ 200 more for Leica S lenses
  • $ 45 to $ 245 more for Leica APS-C gear
  • $ 245 more for the Leica Q (Typ 116) black anodized model
  • $ 200 more for the Leica X-U (Typ 113)
  • and a whopping $ 1,045 more for the Leica S (Typ 007), which will now cost $ 19,995.

You’ll notice the SL system, new Thambar 90mm and Noctilux 75mm lenses, and Leica CL camera are not affected by this price increase.

Per Red Dot Forum’s report, orders placed by April 30th will honor the current, lower prices—that includes items that won’t be in stock until May 1st or later. If you’re in the US and are interesting in purchasing a Leica product, you can browse the full list of affected products here.

Adobe Creative Cloud prices will increase April 16th, Photography Plan will stay the same

13 Mar

Yesterday, a few of our staffers received an email from Adobe warning them that, in a little over a month, the price of their Adobe Creative Cloud subscriptions would increase on their next renewal date. The email read:

Dear *subscriber*

The price of Creative Cloud will increase on April 16, 2018. However, your price will not change until your next renewal date. Please note that this is the first time in over five years that we’ve raised the base price of Creative Cloud.

The price of Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps will change to US$ 52.99/month on your renewal date of *insert date here*. A reminder email will be sent to you as your renewal date gets closer.

It seems these prices changes were initially announced in October at Adobe MAX, but the email still came as news to us. So when we received the notice, we reached out to Adobe to confirm and to ask if the Creative Cloud Photography plan pricing would also increase.

Here’s what we got back:

As announced in October 2017 at Adobe MAX, for the first time since the introduction of Creative Cloud five years ago, a modest adjustment in commercial pricing will take effect for customers in the United States, Canada and Mexico on April 16, 2018 or at existing customers’ next contract renewal. Beginning April 16, new subscribers will benefit from the current pricing and can lock in a year subscription at no additional charge. Prices will vary by plans—for example, Creative Cloud for Individuals All App annual plans will experience a 6% increase to $ 52.99 per month from $ 49.99 per month. These pricing updates do not impact our Student/Education, Creative Cloud Photography, XD or Acrobat CC plans.

For more pricing details visit: https://theblog.adobe.com/adobe-updates-creative-cloud-pricing/

So, the good news for photographers is that the Creative Cloud Photography plan price is not changing. You will still pay $ 10/month for Photoshop CC, Lightroom Classic CC, and Lightroom CC with 20GB of cloud storage, or $ 20/month to increase that cloud storage quota to 1TB. But if you’re on an All App or Single App plans, you’re going to see a price hike.

In addition to the Individual All App plan increasing in price to $ 53/month (previously $ 50), Creative Cloud for Individual Single App plans will now cost $ 21/month (previously $ 20), and Creative Cloud for Teams All App plans will now cost $ 80/month (up from $ 70).

For more info on this price increase, you can read the original announcement post here.

Blackmagic Design slashes Video Assist prices

28 Jun

Blackmagic Design has dropped the prices of its Video Assist external monitor/recorders for a limited time. The smaller, 1080-capable model with its 5″ screen has $ 100 knocked off its price, taking it down to $ 395 while the 7″, Video Assist 4K drops $ 300 to a price of $ 595.

We recently took a look at the benefits of using an external monitor/recorder, and have been pretty impressed with our experiences of using the Video Assist 4K thus far.

The company has given no further details of the firmware update which promises the addition of Waveform and Vectorscopes, which was due to be released in June. We’ll be publishing a review once the update is available.

Press Release:

Blackmagic Design Announces Summer Special Price for Video Assist and Video Assist 4K

Fremont, California – June 27, 2017 – Blackmagic Design today announced a new summer special promotion for Blackmagic Video Assist and Blackmagic Video Assist 4K. During this promotion, customers can save US$ 100 on the purchase of a Blackmagic Video Assist, and US $ 300 on the purchase of a Blackmagic Video Assist 4K. That means Blackmagic Video Assist can now be purchased for only US $ 395 and Blackmagic Video Assist 4K can be purchased for US$ 595 from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide while stocks last.

The Video Assist summer special makes it easier than ever for customers to add professional monitoring and broadcast quality recording to any SDI or HDMI camera. With the new summer special pricing for limited stock, customers will be able to buy a Video Assist for each of their cameras.

The Blackmagic Video Assist family of products gives customers better monitoring and higher quality recording than is available on many cameras. Older cameras often feature custom and hard to use file or tape formats, while lower cost consumer cameras often have poor quality file formats and small screens, limiting their professional use. Blackmagic Video Assist solves this problem because it works with every type of camera from DSLRs to older tape based camcorders, and even the latest digital film cameras. Customers get a large professional on set monitor, along with 10-bit broadcast quality ProRes and DNxHR recording.

In addition to professional monitoring and recording, the Blackmagic Video Assist 4K model will also support powerful built in scopes such as a waveform monitor, RGB parade, vectorscope and histogram in the upcoming Video Assist 2.5 Update, along with extremely high fidelity audio recording and microphone inputs.

“Video Assist is an incredibly versatile tool and has become an indispensable part of everyone’s production kit,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “It’s the perfect portable field monitor and recorder, and now customers can get them at an even lower price so they can add them to all of their cameras while stocks last!”

Apple cuts adapter and card reader prices to appease new MacBook Pro buyers

05 Nov

When Apple announced its new MacBook Pro last week, Mac fans were up in arms about the removal of its HDMI port, SD card reader and MagSafe power connector (among other things.)  The new models have four Thunderbolt 3 ports (two on each side), and that’s it, thus requiring ‘dongles’ in order to use legacy connectors. SanDisk also produces an SD card reader (pictured) that plugs right into the side of the computer.

To help placate those who aren’t excited about spending nearly $ 120 just to get their SD card reader and HDMI port back, the company has cut prices of many USB-C and Thunderbolt adapters for a limited time.

  • USB-C to USB adapter: $ 19 to $ 9
  • Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter: $ 49 to $ 29
  • USB-C to Lightning cables (1/2 meter): $ 25 to $ 19 / $ 35 to $ 29
  • Multiport adapter w/HDMI, USB and USB-C: $ 69 to $ 49
  • Multiport adapter w/VGA, USB and USB-C: $ 69 to $ 49
  • SanDisk USB-C SD card reader: $ 49 to $ 29

Fujifilm says photographic paper prices will increase starting in October

25 Aug

Fujifilm has announced an upcoming price increase that will be applied to photographic papers starting this October. The company says it expects the price increase will be ‘of at least [a] double digital percent,’ though a specific percentage has not been provided at this time. The price change will be implemented across the globe.

The company cites a decrease in demand for photographic papers as the cause, saying that while it has made changes to its production to deal with a ‘rising expense ratio,’ it expects that demand will continue to decrease in the future, necessitating a price increase.

Shazam for Art: Phone App Identifies, Prices & Compares Artwork

27 Apr

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

art identification app

Whether at a gallery without wall plaques, visiting a business establishment or hanging out at a friend’s home, having Magnus on your smartphone will let you see what the wall art around you is all about.

art comparison app

Pointing your device and clicking a picture brings up all kinds of details about a given work, including the name of the artist, medium of the work and its dimensions … as well as its price (either current, if available, or most recent if sold and off the market).

art gallery app

One of its more fascinating features, however, is  its comparative software that brings up what the app considers to be related works of art, by type, style and price. It does this by tapping into a crowd-sourced database of 8,000,000 works of art (and growing).

One risk here, of course, it that it reinforces the commodification of art. It is also sort of a strange function in that it boils art down to tastes and preferences … just because another piece looks similar or is priced in the same range does not mean a user should go out and buy it.

artist coder

Magnus was 31-year-old German art entrepreneur Magnus Resch, known for his work on best Larry’s List, an active database of contemporary art collectors. His response to this kind of criticism: “Why is it ethically wrong to show users prices of an artwork they are interested in?

“If you are willing to spend $ 10,000 on an artwork,” he continues, “you should know that another gallery put the work on auction a year ago for $ 7,000 and it didn’t sell. Knowing this will allow the collector to make a more conscious decision.” Of course, for most of us, spending $ 10,000 on a piece of art is a bit unrealistic, so perhaps the general public is not really the target audience for the app.

Hasselblad drops 15% on lens prices until the end of March

16 Mar

Swedish medium-format camera manufacturer Hasselblad has announced it is dropping the price of all its H series lenses until the 31st March. The discount applies to all HC and HCD lenses, and gives buyers 15% off the usual prices.

The HC and HCD ranges include fixed and zoom lenses designed to be used on the Hasselblad H cameras, including the current H5D 50c Wi-Fi but also going back to the H1 film body. The savings mean the 35-90mm F4-5.6 HCD Aspherical zoom, which is the most expensive of the range will cost $ 6936 instead of $ 8160 – a discount of $ 1224 – while the standard 80mm F2.8 HC lens drops by $ 445.50, from $ 2970 to $ 2524.50.

It is hard to tell whether the offer really will finish at the end of the month as Hasselblad has a habit of announcing short-term discounts that then become the standard price. The new CEO Perry Oosting said recently that price is definitely an issue for the company and that introducing lower costs to ownership, such as the Christmas discount on the H5D 50c Wi-Fi, brings new customers to the brand.

For more information about the company’s lenses and to find a retailer visit the Hasselblad website.
