Results of the post-processing poll

27 Jan

A few weeks ago I started a new poll on what post-production software you use most often. If you want to add your vote you still can here. We have run this poll twice in the past, every two years, so it will be interesting to see if the results have changed at all from 2009, to 2011 to 2013. Let’s look at the current results first.

Results – what post-processing software is used most often in December 2013

With over 27,000 votes at the time of this summary the overwhelming winner was Lightroom with a whopping 42% share. Now let’s see how these numbers compare to 2011 and 2009.

Survey results from 2011

Interesting! Lightroom has certainly catapulted to the top in a big way:

  • Lightroom is up 10% from two years ago to 42% currently, that’s a huge chunk of users
  • Photoshop and Photoshop Elements combined are down from 34 to 30% (-4%)
  • Picasa is down 2%
  • Aperture is down 2%
  • Gimp down 1%
  • PaintShop Pro held steady at 3% share
  • iPhoto was down from 4% to 3% share
  • Other was constant at 5%

These results are from 23414 votes in the 2011 poll.

 Way different results from 2009!

According to Wikipedia Lightroom Version 1 was released in January 2007. Within two years (as seen below) it had taken almost 20% of the post-processing market share. Not bad! But compare those stats to the current one and Lightroom has become the clear front runner for photographers in the processing arena.

Quick comparison of the big two by Adobe

  • 2009 Lightroom had 19%
  • 2009 Photoshop (all versions of CS) had 36%
  • 2009 Photoshop including Element had 49%
  • 2013 Lightroom at 42%
  • 2013 Photoshop down to 19% (pretty much reversed)
  • 2013 Photoshop inc. Elements 30%

Most of the “also rans” stayed pretty steady in terms of their percentage, within a point or two. I’d say it’s fair to say that Lightroom has taken over in four short years and has become the “go to” software of choice for most photographers (amateur and professional).

Want to learn how to use Lightroom and get on board?

First, grab a copy of Lightroom 5 if you haven’t got it already, or upgrade if you’re still using version 4.

Do you Shoot in the Rain? – Poll Results

12 Jan

A few weeks ago I posed the question:

Do you Shoot in the Rain or Pack up at the First Drop?

Over 7000 people voted and the survey results are in.

rain-poll-results-dps-2

Looks like close to half of us (39%) are crazy enough to just go for it come hell, or in this case high water, while about a third are worried about their gear. If you have a non-sealed camera body and kit lenses you should take due care in protecting your gear in inclement weather for sure.

For those 18% of you what want to give it a go, here are a few articles on how to protect your gear:

  • Tips to Protect your Gear in Harsh Weather Conditions
  • How to Protect your Camera in Extreme Conditions
  • How To Keep Camera Gear Safe While Traveling (another thing to consider)
  • Embrace the Weather with Your Photography

Remember to take the current poll and tell us what software you use the MOST here.

Poll update – what post production software do you use the most?

23 Dec

We ran this poll last in February of 2009, so I thought it was time for an update to see if there have been any changes since last time. I’m especially curious about any Adobe offerings since the Creative Cloud too affect. Has that swayed your software choice?

Tell us what post production software you use the most. If you use more than one, indicate the one you use most often, for most of your editing needs. For example I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC, but LR5 is my primary tool as I use it for 90% of my editing.

By filling this in you will also be giving us direction in what types of articles and tutorials we post in the future. So please share and add a comment below if you want to give us additional information.

>I’ve included the eight most popular tools mentioned last time we asked this question to readers (I’ve combined all Photoshop versions into one for simplicity). I know others of you use Noise Ninja, Bibble Pro, ACDSee and others – feel free to tick the ‘others’ option and tell us in comments below what ‘other’ one you’ve chosen.

If you use more than one feel free to tell us about that too.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

77% of dPS Readers Take A Camera Everywhere [POLL Results]

18 Jun

Last month we asked readers whether they took their camera with them everywhere in a poll. The results are in!

Screen Shot 2013 06 17 at 12 47 40 PM

If you include the camera in your phone… 77% of the almost 20,000 people who responded take a camera with them everywhere.

What I find interesting is that we ran this exact same poll in January 2009 so we can track how things have changed over the last 4 years among our readers. Here are the 2009 results (the results were from around 18,000 readers at that time).

Screen Shot 2013 06 17 at 12 47 22 PM

While the changes have only been subtle there are a few interesting observations to make.

Firstly – more people are relying upon the cameras in their phones to capture their everyday events. This is no wonder – back in 2009 the iPhone had been out for a couple of years but since then the camera in iPhone (and other phones) have improved significantly (in fact a segment of our readership ONLY use camera phones).

Secondly the rise in camera phone use has come at the expense of compact camera solutions and those who only took cameras on special occasions.

What surprised me most was the slight rise in those taking DSLRS everywhere because there’s been such a push of late from camera manufacturers to improve their offerings in the compact camera space.

How have your camera usage habits chanced in the last 4 years?

How Many Cameras Have You Owned? [POLL]

16 Jun

ZA10AThis morning I opened up the cupboard in my study where I keep my camera gear and my eye was drawn to the very first digital camera that I owned – a little Canon Powershot A10 camera (pictured right) with what I thought at the time was an amazingly big 1.3 megapixel sensor. Before that I’d used a friends Sony Movica camera that had a 1.4 inch floppy disk to record the images).

It made me think about how digital cameras have changed over the years and how many different digital cameras of different types I’ve owned.

I have 13 cameras in that cupboard today (I have a feeling I owned another couple which may be in the hands of family or friends) plus have used numerous camera phones.

I thought it might make an interesting poll question. How many digital cameras have you owned? Keep your response to just the cameras (not camera phones) if you can.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

I’d also love to hear in the comments:

  1. what was your first digital camera?
  2. what has been your favorite digital camera?

For me the first was my Canon A10 but I think my favorites would have to have been my Canon EOS 20D (my first DSLR which was when I really started to get intrigued by digital) and my Leica M9-P which helped me slow down and begin to enjoy my photography again after a period of getting a little disillusioned by it.

What about you?

Poll: What concerns you most about Adobe’s move to subscription software?

09 May

AdobeCClogo.png

Adobe’s decision to move to a subscription-based model for its professional creative software has prompted probably  the most impassioned response we’ve ever seen to a news story on dpreview.com. There’s a risk that the sheer volume of comments might prevent a clear message being heard, so we’ve prepared a poll of the most common complaints, to help establish what your biggest concerns are.

How Many dPS Readers Have Had Photography Training? POLL RESULTS

07 May

Last week on dPS our reader poll asked readers if they’d ever done any kind of photography training (a class or course). The results from over 66,000 readers are in and interestingly over 60% of us have never done any formal training (whether it be online or offline).

Photography courses

Those of you who have done some training – what was it and how did you find it?

Those of you who have never done any training – where did you learn? Was it just through practice, magazines, websites, friends, books… or something else?

Do You Take a Digital Camera With You Everywhere? [POLL]

06 May

Last week I wrote a post exploring 3 stupidly simple reasons why most people’s photography doesn’t improve – the first reason being that they don’t take their camera with them.

A lot of people agreed – so I thought it might be interesting to run a poll to see how many of us DO take a camera with us all the time.

We ran this poll over four years ago so it’ll be interesting to see if anything has changed since then.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Feel free to share more about your answer in comments below!
