7-best-photography-podcasts

While this is an article that I want to be educational for us all, it is a bit of a selfish one – I love seeking out new recommendations for podcasts! Rather than position this as the definitive list, I wanted to give you the best photography podcasts that I love to listen to in the hope that some of you may find a new podcast to love in 2020.

However, I also want to hear your recommendations for the best photography podcasts I can check out in 2020!

Podcasts are currently seeing serious investment, with streaming giant Spotify investing over $ 400 million.

This has paid off for Spotify, with their podcast audience doubling in the first half of 2019 alone. With that investment, means more podcasts produced, and the quality is getting higher all the time. This is a serious win for us as Podcast listeners.

For me, at least, Podcasts have made their way into part of my daily routine. Like waiting for the next episode of a TV show, I look forward to hearing the latest episodes of my favorite podcasts each week. I tend to listen to them whilst working, commuting, or just to chill out.

The podcasts I listen to tend to be less gear-based and more based on the story of photographers or how to improve in business. This type of content makes me excited to check out the work of photographers I haven’t before. It also inspires, either for strategies to try, or just visual inspiration from the discovery of new photographers.

Not only are big companies investing, but the quality of podcasts on all levels is better than ever. People are spending serious time in making their podcasts sound great. Gone are the days of what felt like listening to a phone conversation between people. Many modern podcasts are well-produced, great-sounding shows that allow me to imagine my perfect radio station, curated just for me.

The 7 Best Photography Podcasts

Why 7? Well, to be honest, I like to try and listen to one podcast per day. I could give you the top 15, or top 20. If you’re not careful, though, your podcast feed (like my own) will be jammed with episodes or entire podcasts you never get round to listening to.

So, in no particular order, here are my 7 best photography podcasts.

Best photography podcast for business Photobiz X

1. Photobiz X

Seen by many as the number one photography business podcast, Photobiz X is also the only podcast on this list with a premium version alongside the free version.

The podcast will give you great tips, whichever you listen to. Premium listeners get more of a deep dive into business techniques and access to the excellent PBX group on Facebook. As a member myself, I find the amount of help and support you get from the premium version worth the price. If you do find yourself enjoying the podcast, you can try it free for 30 days to see if it is a worthwhile investment for you.

This podcast interviews a huge variety of photographers and related business experts that can help you improve your photography business. Previous topics have included selling more wall art, website design, copywriting for your business, and a whole host of other topics.

Andrew, as a host, intuitively asks the questions that you find yourself asking as you listen along. He picks away the guest’s layers to get to the heart of the strategies that make their businesses successful.

Also, every episode has actionable takeaways that you can take and apply to your business. The only issue may be that you have too many ideas to try!

Best enjoyed: Monday morning, setting you up with business inspiration for the week.

The FujiCast Logo

2. FujiCast

This is a podcast with two UK-based wedding photographers, whom both shoot with Fuji.

You would think that this would be a pretty niche podcast. However, if you can get beyond the name, what you will find is a funny, beautifully-produced podcast that has a great mix between answering readers’ questions and interviews with photographers.

FujiCast is the perfect listen on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee.

The tone of the podcast is that of two mates chatting about photography, except these mates are very knowledgeable and regarded as some of the best UK wedding photographers.

Yes, the gear talk that features usually has a Fuji slant, but gear talk isn’t where this podcast sings – it is the interviews and stories of the guests that are inspiring.

Again, one of the best things about this podcast is the community that Neale and Kevin have built. They host regular meet-ups for recordings, etc.

The FujiCast is a great listen that will introduce you to some amazing photographers.

Best enjoyed: Sunday morning after a leisurely breakfast, whilst enjoying a coffee.

The Candid Frame. Perhaps The best photography podcast voice

3. The Candid Frame

The voice! The Candid Frame begins with smooth Jazz, which leads into possibly the smoothest podcast voice ever in Ibarionex Perello. One of the longest-running podcasts, The Candid Frame, has been running since 2006.

You can tell Ibarionex puts loads of work into researching every guest he interviews. His interview technique, honed over nearly 500 episodes, gives the interviewee the chance to tell their story beautifully. He asks questions that help him (and you as the listener) delve into their photographic journey.

Best enjoyed: Late at night, with a glass of your favorite tipple.

He shoots he draws podcast logo

4. He Shoots He Draws

This podcast consists of a photographer and designer who describe their podcast as a chat over a cuppa. Episodes range from twenty minutes to well over an hour.

He Shoots, He Draws, is as laid back as the title suggests. However, that would not do justice to the huge amount of knowledge that both Glynn and Dave bring to each episode.

While bringing the angles of photography and design, this podcast covers a variety of topics with a wide-ranging variety of guests.

Best enjoyed: Tuesday morning, to help you make it through the week ahead.

7 of the Best Photography Podcasts to Inspire!

5. This Week in Photo

This podcast really doesn’t need an introduction, and I am sure it is already on many of your weekly listens. One of the longest-running podcasts (it’s been around since 2008), This Week in Photo has a great mix of roundtable discussions and interviews, so this podcast still feels fresh.

Not every topic will appeal to everyone, but with each episode usually in the 30-45 minute range, I find myself listening along and getting something of interest that stops me from skipping.

I did think about not including this podcast due to it being so popular, but a podcast is like an old pair of jeans. It’s the one you always go back to because it feels so comfortable.

Best enjoyed: On a lazy Saturday, slouching in your favorite pair of jeans.

One of the best photography podcast. So You Want to Be a Photographer

6. So You Want to Be a Photographer

Gina Milicia is a renowned Australian photographer who has photographed many celebs in her time. (She has also written e-books for dPS including Portraits: Making the Shot,  Portraits Lighting The ShotPortraits: Striking The Pose14 Amazing Portrait RecipesPortraits: After The Shot, and Fast FLASH For Portrait Perfection.)

Her podcast, which she hosts with her friend and photography enthusiast, Valerie Khoo, is exactly the opposite of the type of podcast you would expect from such a high-end photographer. Gina is down to earth, and this podcast is full of advice for those on all levels.

The two hosts bounce off each other, and the enthusiast and expert balance between them really helps keep the podcast accessible to everyone. Episodes are full of great advice for people at differing stages of photography from the beginner looking for inspiration through to those taking a step into making money from photography.

Best enjoyed: On a bad Wednesday in the office. When you have decided that you want out of the 9-5 and want to start getting paid for your photography.

Photobomb Podcast logo

7. Photobomb

This podcast is like listening to two radio personalities with the humor of the naughty kids in class.

Booray Perry and Gary Hughes are a duo who will tend to let their episodes wander off-topic, but in a good way. A perfect example of this is starting a recent episode discussing the new Star Wars movie and which Star Wars films get a raw deal.

Booray and Gary are both experienced photographers with personalities that you will either love or hate. Quick-fire banter between them brings all the news and opinions you need for the week. Booray spent twenty years in radio before becoming a photographer, and that definitely comes through in this podcast.

A great listen in the car or at the gym too.

Best enjoyed: On the daily commute, as long as you are happy with occasionally laughing out loud on public transport.

Scenario podcast logo

Bonus podcast: Scenario

I’ve left the most fragile until last. The Scenario podcast by Jessica Mcdermott is made up of only six episodes recorded between November 2017 and March 2018. The only updates since then come in two, 2-minute notes about an update and #PodStrike.

You may be wondering, why would you tell us that this is one of the best photography podcasts and one that we need to listen to in 2020? Simply put, each episode is a beautiful little documentary on a fascinating photography story. There is the photographer who shoots landscapes to send to her pen pals on death row and the story of a photographer who is documenting his brother’s gender transition.

Each episode is beautifully put together and reminds me of a documentary that you would hear on Radio 4 (or NPR for you US-based listeners). Every story is fascinating, and I can see them appealing to many people outside of the world of photography.

Jessica allows each photographer to open up and tell their story, so each episode feels very intimate.

My only wish is that this podcast returns with more episodes. Although maybe it is destined to be these six perfect episodes that should be appreciated just as they are.

Best enjoyed: All in one. Find a weekend and listen to these wonderful stories in one sitting.

Conclusion

So there you go – a podcast for every day.

As I said, these are some of the best photography podcasts and are not meant to be an exhaustive list.

There are so many more I could add here, including more of the usual suspects. I am sure there are many more that you could add as well.

So, as I said at the start, I wanted to throw this out to you as the readers. Let’s hear in the comments below one of the best photography podcasts that everyone needs to listen to in 2020. I look forward to adding a load more podcasts to my list from your recommendations.

7 Photography Podcasts That are Worth a Listen

28 Jan

There is no shortage of podcasts about photography. They cater for everyone from beginners to experienced amateurs, semi-pros and professionals. A quick search in Google returns so many options it can be a bit overwhelming. It’s impossible to listen to them all, so how do you decide which ones to download or subscribe to? The simplest answer is to follow recommendations from friends and colleagues. So, in no particular order, here are seven photography based podcasts that I currently subscribe to, that I think will be of interest to you as a photographer:

1. This Week in Photo

Image 1 twip podcast logo sans text 480

This Week in Photo (TWiP) has been on my playlist for a long time now. My listening goes back to when Scott Bourne was running it. I found the show early in its lifetime, and have enjoyed listening each week as the many guests and co-hosts share their knowledge and expertise. TWiP is now hosted by Frederick van Johnson. It’s a light hearted look at the major stories from the previous week. Frederick and his guest hosts get down to the nitty gritty of the photographic world. The show is topical, very relevant and usually delivered with just a smattering of humour. It’s one of those podcasts that hasn’t left my playlist from the time I first discovered it quite a few years ago!

Editor’s note: yours truly, Darlene Hildebrandt, has been a co-host on the show several times as well! Always a good time and great discussion.

2. TWiP Street Focus

Image 2 TWiP SF

Street Focus is a new podcast under the TWiP umbrella, hosted by dPS author, Valerie Jardin. She says on her website, “The day I picked up a camera I became a storyteller. Photography is my passion, my obsession, my addiction. I live and breathe in pixels!”

This is obvious when you listen to the Street Focus podcast. I listened to a couple of episodes and immediately subscribed. These days I have to think a podcast is very good before I subscribe because I always unsubscribe from another to make way for the new one. There just isn’t enough time to listen to all the great podcasts out there. This one was good enough for me to do just that! Valerie shares her knowledge about street photography openly, and freely, and has some great guests too.

Her interviews draw out interesting snippets of information from her guests. If you’re thinking of travelling somewhere for the first time, it might pay you to check out the Street Focus archives and see if Valerie has interviewed a photographer from the city you’re visiting. They always describe locations, often in areas not usually frequented by tourists, that offer great opportunities for street photography.

3. The Digital Story

Image 3 Derrick with TDS logo

The Digital Story is a short and pithy podcast hosted by Derrick Story. He usually covers a few topical stories at the beginning of each episode before getting into three more in-depth stories. His technical knowledge is very good and he distills that knowledge into language that everyone can understand. Derrick wears many hats as a photographer and technologist, and his stories cover all manner of subject matter that relate in some way or another to photography. Derrick is also known as the “Nimble Photographer” and enjoys sharing ways to make your life easier as a travelling photographer. He is also a semi-regular guest host on This Week in Photo.

4. The Candid Frame

Image 4 TCFlogo3

I discovered The Candid Frame a couple of years ago and it is one of the most refreshing photography podcasts I’ve heard. You won’t find anything to do with the latest cameras or equipment. Nor will you find anything to do with technique. What you will discover is Ibarionex Perello, a man with a deep insight and understanding of the photographic world.

Each episode, Ibarionex interviews someone new and delves deep into their psyche to extract information about their thought processes. He has grown as an interviewer and is a pleasure to listen to. It’s obvious that Ibarionex does his research before each interview because his questions are not those you would normally expect to hear. They are insightful and deliver responses that go to the core of the interviewee.

5. Photobiz Xposed

Image 5 PhotoBizX logo 600

The Photobiz Xposed podcast by Andrew Hellmich is well worth a listen for any photographer. Its primary focus is the business of photography, particularly for those specializing in portraits and weddings. To be honest though, any photographer can learn from the expert guests Andrew has on his show. In fact, I’d say many of the strategies and much of the information could be helpful to anyone running a business, no matter what it is. The principles explained during the podcast episodes could translate equally well across many platforms.

Andrew has a relaxed way of interacting with his guests and manages to elicit great information from them. There are two levels for this podcast – a free version and a subscription version. Those that pay the monthly subscription get the full interview, whereas those that subscribe to the free version get a shortened, but still very valuable, version. There are usually downloads for those who subscribe too. I’m a fan, and I do pay the monthly subscription.

6. Martin Bailey Photography Podcast

Image 6 mbpp logo 600px

The Martin Bailey Photography Podcast is another long running show. Martin has been putting out weekly episodes since 2005. He hails from England originally, but has been based in Tokyo for many years and specializes in nature and wildlife photography. He’s also a regular guest host of This Week in Photo, an author, and a Master in The Arcanum. Martin is a font of knowledge and his relaxed attitude makes him easy to listen to each week. He covers many topics related to photography and the business of photography. Another must listen!

7. Tips from the Top Floor

This is probably one of the first, if not THE first photography podcast to hit the air. Hosted by Chris Marquardt, Tips from the Top Floor has been running since about 2005 and covers all sorts of photography related topics – from photographing the night sky, to answering reader / listener questions and shooting portraits. Each episode is relatively short and easy to listen to. Like the other podcasts in the list, Chris has an easy going approach and shares his knowledge freely.

Honourable Mentions

Although this is the list of seven podcasts I currently listen to, there have been many others I’ve subscribed to over the years. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to listen to them all, so I have to unsubscribe from some occasionally. That doesn’t mean they’re bad podcasts, or not as good as the seven above, it simply means that at this current time I find myself listening to these seven. So, here’s a few more that might be more suitable for you (check out them all and you decide):

TWiP Your Itinerary is a new addition to the TWiP network and I’ve listened to them all so far to check them out. I’m not sure I’ll subscribe at this point, but I’m certainly keeping my eyes and ears on it. The content is good and Rob Knight is well suited to the hosting role. The podcast covers topics related to travel photography.

TWiP All About The Gear is another one from the TWiP network. Frederick van Johnson has made some really good decisions with the format of the main show and then branching out into sub-genres. This one is no different. Host Doug Kaye and Frederick discuss the nitty-gritty of cameras and other related products. They delve into the heart of the subject to keep listeners informed about all the latest gear. This is a great podcast, but not one I subscribe to. I regularly visit their website to check what the latest episode is about and then listen if it’s of particular interest to me. So I pick and choose the episodes I listen to.

Ready Steady Pro is a podcast hosted by Michael Rammell out of the United Kingdom. It’s dedicated to those moving from amateur to pro and has some great information. The show has been on a bit of a hiatus lately but Michael is planning more episodes again soon. The podcast will be moving from weekly to bi-weekly when it resumes. I’m looking forward to listening to this one again as Michael always covers interesting topics.

Digital Photo Experience hosted by Juan Pons and Rick “Godfather” Sammon is a fantastic listen. Although I’m not currently subscribed, I highly recommend this podcast. Both Juan and Rick discuss all sorts of topics around photography. They’re easy to listen to and get the information across in a way that’s easy for beginners to understand, without being too simplified for the advanced amateur. I’m sure Rick’s mind only stops when he’s sleeping and I’m not sure it even stops then! There’s always something new and exciting on this show.

Adorama TV post numerous video podcasts covering quite a range of topics. There’s tutorials by Mark Wallace, Gavin Hoey, Tamara Lackey – there’s something for everyone under the Adorama banner. They’re well worth checking out. I tend to watch them ad hoc when I have some spare time because they’re video related and I usually listen to my regular podcasts while I’m driving.

Do you have any other favourite podcasts not on this list? We’d love to hear about them or if you listen to the ones mentioned tell us what you enjoy about those.

Radiotopia Fundraiser: Support 7 Story-Centric PRX Podcasts

16 Oct

[ By WebUrbanist in Culture & History & Travel. ]

radiotopia

Last year, Roman Mars of 99% Invisible and PRX broke records, raising $ 375,000 with a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign – this year, Radiotopia aims to collect $ 250,000 in contributions on Kickstarter page to support its lineup of seven amazing radio shows. So far, this campaign has gained over 2,500 backers and $ 100,000 in its first 24 hours – to see why, read on and listen to a collection of select stories, one per show, embedded for your listening pleasure below.

radiotopia kickstarter crowdfunding campaign

Funded directly by fans, Radiotopia represents “a new model for audience engagement and revenue growth in public radio” as well as a “collective of the best story-driven shows on the planet.” For their last campaign, designed to make 99% Invisible a weekly production, WebUrbanist brought you seven of the show’s most compelling episodes in an effort to support their crowdfunding endeavors. This year, we are highlighting one episode from each of these unique and compelling podcasts. As fellow independent media producers, we encourage you to check these out for yourselves and show your support for these amazing programs.

holdout

99% Invisible has gone from a garage radio startup on design and built environments to one of the most popular and celebrated award-winning audio programs in the world. From this past season, Holdout represents the a great example of how the show explores the intersection of urban planning, zoning laws and esoteric architectural history. At the heart of this episode is the nail house of Edith Macefield, a woman who refused to sell her home at any cost – developers ended up building around it, but, like any good story, the end is not the point, and there are many twists along the way. Bonus: a t-shirt featuring this famous home is one of the Kickstarter rewards you can get for supporting Radiotopia!

radio diaries radiotopia prx

Radio Diaries “tells the extraordinary stories of ordinary life,” enabling citizen journalism since the 1960s and collaborating “with teenagers and octogenarians, prisoners and prison guards, bra saleswomen and lighthouse keepers” along the way. When Borders Move explores the strange phenomena of geographical boundaries defined by landscape features like rivers that stubbornly refuse to stop moving over time. In this episode, personal interviews with impacted individuals are spliced in between larger examples and explanations, showing the human side of these larger historical shifts.

love and radio radiotopia

Love + Radio “features in-depth, otherworldly-produced interviews with an eclectic range of subjects, from the seedy to the sublime.” Bedouin Love is a short show featuring a poignant but “brief conversation of love, death, and camel’s milk” with a guide in Petra, Jordan, an ancient historical site where Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and other films were shot. It represents another side to the tourist experience – those hard-to-capture but powerful person-to-person moments that go beyond the contents of superficial and sanitized travel guides and give you a sense of the day-to-day life and culture of a place.
