Sony reportedly cuts planned mirrorless camera features in response to DRAM shortage

21 Feb

Update: This story originally stated that Bloomberg’s sources alleged that PS5 production was given preference over mirrorless features that would require scarce components. Bloomberg’s story only points out that both mirrorless cameras and Playstation divisions are suffering due to the scarcity of DRAM and NAND; our story has been updated to reflect this.

Sources recently speaking to Bloomberg allege that Sony has nixed some features it had planned for an unnamed future mirrorless camera model due to the scarcity of certain hardware, namely DRAM and NAND flash memory.

The current demand for NAND and DRAM is high among smartphone manufacturers, according to Bloomberg, which reports that Sony is struggling to keep down the cost of its upcoming PS5 console. The article makes reference to high DRAM prices having an impact on other parts of the company, with cameras in particular being called out.

According to the article: ‘Sony has already canceled some previously planned features for a new mirrorless camera due this year owing to the constrained DRAM supply, several people with knowledge of the matter said.’

The report doesn’t specify which camera model will suffer as a result of this alleged decision nor which features were eliminated, though it does claim that Sony plans to release the camera this year.

The wording is interesting, in that it suggests the camera will still be delivered, shorn of the capabilities that fast DRAM memory would have provided. It could be that Sony planned to expand the use of stacked DRAM image sensors beyond the a9 and newer RX100 models, but will instead proceed with a more conventional CMOS sensor.

Given the current state of Sony’s lineup, the a7 III replacement seems a likely candidate. Or maybe the technology was meant to underpin the long hoped for NEX-7 high-end APS-C successor or an update to the a7S series.

Sony reportedly cuts planned mirrorless camera features to free up hardware for PS5

20 Feb

Sources recently speaking to Bloomberg allege that Sony has nixed some features it had planned for an unnamed future mirrorless camera model due to the scarcity of certain hardware, namely DRAM and NAND flash memory. The decision was reportedly made in order to reserve the limited hardware for the upcoming fifth-generation PlayStation console, which is expected to launch this holiday season.

The current demand for NAND and DRAM is high among smartphone manufacturers, according to Bloomberg, which reports that Sony is struggling to keep down the cost of its upcoming PS5 console. Assuming sources are correct, the PS5 will cost around $ 450 to manufacture, meaning that even with thin margins, consumers could be facing a unit price of $ 470 or more for the next-gen gaming console.

The sources claim that the coronavirus outbreak hasn’t had any sort of impact on the PS5 at this time, but that limited DRAM availability prompted the company to cancel some mirrorless camera features it had planned. Sony will reportedly prioritize the DRAM for its PS5 console, the final price of which hasn’t been revealed.

The report doesn’t specify which camera model will suffer as a result of this alleged decision nor which features were eliminated, though it does claim that Sony plans to release the camera this year. Assuming the claim is true, Sony may have decided to remove a planned stacked DRAM image sensor from an upcoming model, but the company has not commented on the report, leaving little more than speculation at this time.

Tamron reveals it has three new, unannounced mirrorless lenses planned for 2020

11 Feb
The relevant section (the teal section, middle-right) of the above graphic has been altered to include the translated text.

Buried within Tamron’s full-year financial report was a little detail that hints at Tamron revealing three new, unannounced lenses for mirrorless cameras in 2020.

The new information can be seen in the above graphic within the presentation that shows Tamron has five models planned for 2020, two of which have already been announced: the 20mm F2.8 lens for Sony E-mount cameras (Adorama, B&H) and a compact 70–180mm F2.8 lens for Sony E-mount cameras that’s currently in development.

It’s unknown what the three new lenses will be, but Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting all three will be E-mount lenses.

Other details in the report include a statement claiming Tamron expects ‘the sales of own-brand [mirrorless lens] models is expected to increase the sales compare to the previous year’ and confirmation its 17–28mm F2.8 lens should no longer be backordered by the end of February.

Fujifilm developing 50mm F1.0 instead of planned 33mm F1.0

21 Sep

Alongside the announcement of the X-Pro 3, Fujifilm has said it is developing a 50mm F1.0 lens for its X-mount mirrorless cameras and cancelling the promised 33mm F1.0.

As part of the presentation, Fujifilm’s Head of Product Planning, Takashi Ueno said that the 33mm F1.0 had become too big and heavy as it was being developed. The latest prototype weighed 1300g (45.8oz), included 15 elements and necessitated the addition of a tripod foot.

Instead the company has said it will build a 50mm F1.0, that can be under 900g (31.7oz).

The result is a very different lens: a 75mm equivalent, rather than 50mm equiv. people were expecting. The two sponsored ‘X Photographers’ at the event suggested it could be useful for wedding and portrait photographers. One of these professionals, Bert Stephani, expressed a the hope that the company will re-work its XF 35mm F1.4: one of the first lenses in the X system, whose autofocus isn’t up to the same standard as the company’s more recent designs.

Polaroid teasers suggest company has a big film announcement planned

08 Sep

Visitors to Polaroid.com are being greeted with a pop-up that teases a big announcement scheduled for September 13th. Though the company hasn’t revealed what exactly it has planned, the various teaser messages heavily hint that the announcement will involve film.

Speculation abounds at the moment—including everything from expectations that Polaroid will begin producing its own chemical instant film again, to a possible announcement that Impossible Project’s film will be sold under the Polaroid name—and not without cause. The pop-up scrolls through several statements, including one that reads, “The most complex set of man-made chemical reactions ever. Coming September 13.”

Yet another states, “Analog Dreams,” and another, “SX-70. OS. 600. Spectra. 8×10. Join the dots on September 13.”

Earlier this year, Polaroid announced that Wiaczeslaw Smolokowski, The Impossible Project’s majority shareholder, had acquired its owner PLR IP Holdings, giving the Smolokowski family both the Polaroid brand and intellectual property. The Impossible Project has been working on bringing analog film back from the dead for years, and it’s hard to imagine the timing of Polaroid’s teaser is a coincidence.

The Impossible Project currently offers a few different types of film under the Impossible brand through its website, including SX-70, Spectra, and 600. It is possible we could see this film being sold under the Polaroid name in the near future… or a whole new type of film may be announced by Polaroid itself.

The cards do indicate that something bigger than just film is in the works, though, possibly hinting at big changes in how the two companies do business.

worlds tallest

An ambitious proposal for a country in turmoil, this 3,780-foot building would be not only the tallest in the world but also taller than all structures currently in planning or under construction.

Composed of four connected towers, The Bride by AMBS Architects aims to exceed the Kingdom Tower slated for construction in Saudi Arabia as well as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The mixed-use commercial, housing and office project includes a sweep veil providing shade for outdoor public spaces, parks, gardens and smaller buildings below. A net-zero structure, it is designed to produce more renewable energy than it consumes.

Its designers boast that the 1.5 million square foot structure will break new ground in engineering and vertical transportation. They also emphasize that its horizontality makes an intentional statement about inclusivity – the building is meant to serve more than just those who occupy its heights.

“Super-tall towers are perceived as an object in the distance,” said AMBS. “An alien planted in the city, disconnected from the urban scale at ground level. The Bride, on the other hand, will be conceived as a city itself both vertically but also horizontally from the ground.”

“It will be enjoyed by thousands of people in endless ways, within it, on it or under it, from walking in the vast shaded parks and promenades at ground level, to having lunch or shopping in a sky-square hundreds of metres above sea level.”

LA River Rehab: Dramatic Urban Revitalization Planned

14 Jun

[ By Steph in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

LA River Rehab 1

Currently a concrete wasteland along most of its urban length, the Los Angeles River is set to get a dramatic billion-dollar makeover with the backing of the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps has revealed support for the most comprehensive plan, which transforms two segments of the river stretching 11 miles in length into green space for humans and natural habitats for wildlife.

LA River Rehab 3

Curbed LA has interactive sliding before-and-after images of various parts of the river, showing what they look like now and how much they’ll change after the rehabilitation. Among the planned changes are restoring wetlands that have been lost to urban expansion.

LA River Rehab 2

LA River Rehab 7

The LA River acted as a flood control channel until January 1st of this year, getting a new use as a navigable waterway, meaning the county has to make it accessible to the public. New public events along the river have already begun, like bike-in movie nights.

LA River Rehab 5

Aside from the obvious positives for residents of Los Angeles, the $ 1 billion transformation is expected to bring in over $ 5 million over the next 10 to 15 years alone, and generate tens of thousands of jobs.

Amazon has scheduled a product launch for later this month at its headquarters in Seattle, WA. We are not being told what type of device we should expect but Amazon has started to tease the new model with a picture of one of its corners and a video showing users looking down at a device and reacting with statements like “It moved with me”.
