Hasselblad adds iPhone connectivity to its Phocus Mobile 2 application

15 Aug

Hasselblad has announced a major upgrade to its Phocus Mobile 2 application. The mobile app, which had previously only offered Apple iPad support, is now compatible with iPhone, making it an even better option for Hasselblad photographers on the go.

Phocus Mobile 2 offers photographers advanced remote control, live view, tethered image capture and importing, image conversion and exporting, image rating and filtering, and the ability to update the firmware of your camera and lenses directly in the app. On the iPad version, users can also edit their raw files and perform color correction. A video overview of a previous version of Phocus Mobile 2 can be seen below running on an iPad Pro.

In addition to offering Live View on the new Phocus Mobile 2 app for iPhone, the latest version of the app allows users to update the Hasselblad X1D II 50C, 907X Special Edition and 907X 50C to firmware 1.3.0, adding Live View functionality to these cameras in Phocus Mobile 2 on iPad. When remotely shooting, the app offers a newly designed focus wheel for remote manual focus control. Further, the app now includes focus peaking, simulated exposure, depth-of-field preview and improved AF area position control.

With respect to iPad models, Phocus Mobile 2 is compatible with iPad Air (2019 and newer) and iPad Pro (second generation and newer) models with a minimum of 3GB of RAM. On iPhone, Phocus Mobile 2 works on any iPhone model running iOS 12 or later. However, 100 percent magnification in the application requires an iPhone with at least 3GB of RAM (iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus and X models or later).

Hasselblad updates its desktop, mobile Phocus image processing apps

02 Apr

Hasselblad has released an update to its Phocus image processing applications for both desktop and mobile devices. Phocus 3.5 for desktop brings a number of new and improved features, while the Phocus Mobile 2 update is more incremental with only a few small changes.

Phocus 3.5

Phocus version 3.5 brings a number of new tools and features, including. Specifically, Hasselblad has added a new defringe tool for removing green and purple fringes. The tool will automatically detect and correct for fringing, but also offers manual controls for more precise edits. The brightness and contrast adjustments have also been updated with ‘enhanced algorithms’ that should create more precise tonal adjustments than previous versions.

Hasselblad has also added a new ‘Luma Mode’ to the curves tool for controlling the luminosity of an image with less impact on the colors of an image compared to using the RGB curve mode. Finally, to smooth things out, Hasselblad has increased GPU usage within Phocus 3.5, which should help increase performance, specifically when viewing and exporting high-resolution images. Hasselblad notes the ‘Extended GPU usage option’ must be active within the settings/preferences in order to get the boost from your computer’s GPU.

Phocus Mobile 2 version 1.0.1

Phocus Mobile 2 version 1.0.1 makes only a few changes. In addition to general performance improvements, Hasselblad has also added lens correction support for its XCD 45P and added the ability to zoom and scroll around images immediately after they’re loaded into the viewer within the app.

Phocus Mobile 2 is available on iOS and iPadOS. Hasselblad has an overview video walking through the core functionality of the app if you want to familiarize yourself with the app.

Hasselblad Phocus 3.4 update adds new shadow/highlights tool, adjustment layers, more

07 Dec

Hasselblad has released an update to its medium format post-production program Phocus. Focus version 3.4 adds improvements across the board, including improved shadow and highlight tools, new adjustment layer tools, expanded live view options, new lens profile, and more.

The enhanced Shadow Fill and Highlight Recovery tools have been ‘significantly enhanced.’ Hasselblad says the updated algorithm ‘enables photographers to fully utilize the dynamic range available in their images,’ although exactly how it’s changed remains a mystery. In the event the updated methodology isn’t what a user wants, or the a user is working with previously-corrected images, Hasselblad has also included the old algorithm under a selectable version option.

Hasselblad has added Shadow Fill and Clarity options to the adjustment layer tools so they can now be used as local adjustments with the brush tool and linear and radial gradients. A new Detail tool has also been added under the exposure toolset. This new tool is used alongside the Clarity tool to fine-tune the local contrast in an image.

Focus 3.4 also includes a new Live View Aperture option that lets users ‘to automatically open to the widest aperture possible or to use the selected aperture instead when activating live view.’

Also new is an updated Noise Filter tool and additional lens profiles for the following lenses:

• XCD 2,8/65
• XCD 1,9/80
• XCD 2,8/135 with X Converter 1.7

Hasselblad introduces keystone and local highlight recovery in Phocus 3.1

21 Oct
A before and after example in which the highlight recovery tool has been applied via a mask over the sky in the right-hand image

Hasselblad has released the latest version of its Phocus software that is designed to manipulate images from its H and X series cameras, and the CFV digital back. The 3.1 version adds a new perspective control palette that allows both vertical and horizontal corrections against grid-pattern guide lines, which is something users have been requesting for some time. This should make life easier for those shooting architectural subjects, flat coping and product photographers, among others.

A second new feature is a highlight recovery tool that can be used via a selection on an adjustment layer. A mask is painted over the area that needs drawing back and a slider control pulls in the over-bright detail.

The company has also added a pair of new settings for its Reproduction menu that governs color and contrast settings in the display. Reproduction Low Gain creates a lower contrast image while Negative inverts colors and tones – which will be useful for creating film negatives for other processes.

Version 3.1 of Phocus is available for download on the Hasselblad website.

Manufacturer information:

Phocus 3.1

The eagerly awaited update to our rich image processing software has just been released, bringing with it additional features and benefits.

Keystone Perspective Correction
The new Keystone tool enables you to perform high quality perspective corrections directly in Phocus. This can be done both via a simple guideline interface or via manual slider adjustments. Additionally, the dual-axis correction capability is extremely useful when copying flat artwork.

Local adjustment of highlight recovery
Highlight recovery has now been added to the palette of local adjustment tools, allowing for quick and precise correction without the need for manual masking.

Viewer background and margin options
It’s now possible to configure both margin and background color options for the viewer. This can be done separately for both the normal and a newly added proof mode.

Added camera response options
In the reproduction tool you now have the choice of 2 additional response modes. Reproduction Low Gain enables an even higher quality linear response. The new Negative response is suitable for reproduction of black and white negative film.

Phocus tutorials now available
We have partnered with UK professional photographer Karl Taylor to produce a series of Phocus Tutorial videos. They can be accessed through the Phocus product page and you will need to log in to view them.
