The Associated Press partners with Sony to exclusively provide its visual journalists with Sony camera gear

The Associated Press (AP) has announced it’s partnering with Sony to make the Japanese electronics manufacturer the sole supplier of photo and video equipment for its visual journalists around the globe.

This massive undertaking will see visual journalists in more than 250 locations across 100 countries supplied with Sony cameras, lenses and accessories to capture the more than 3,000 photos and 200 videos submitted every day. AP says ‘A wide variety of Sony’s imaging solutions products will begin delivery immediately, including the full-frame mirrorless Alpha cameras, FS series professional video cameras and an assortment of Sony’s 57 E-mount lenses including G Master models.’

To find out more about the collaboration, we had a conversation with AP’s Director of Photography, J. David Ake. In the interview, he explains why the partnership happened now, how long it’s taken to get this collaboration together and what it means for the hundreds of AP visual journalists around the world.

Sony Electronics to become AP’s exclusive global imaging provider for photo and video journalism

July 23, 2020 – SAN DIEGO, CA – Sony Electronics Inc. a global leader in imaging, and The Associated Press, the trusted global news organization, announced today a new collaboration that will make Sony the exclusive imaging products and support provider for AP news photographers and video journalists around the world.

With journalists in nearly 250 locations in 100 countries, AP provides factual, compelling journalism in all formats, including 3,000 photos and 200 videos each day. The news agency has a distinguished history of powerful visual journalism, winning the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography — AP’s 54th Pulitzer and 32nd for photography — and garnering recognition from the Royal Television Society for excellence in video.

A wide variety of Sony’s imaging solutions products will begin delivery immediately, including the full-frame mirrorless Alpha™ cameras, FS series professional video cameras and an assortment of Sony’s 57 E-mount lenses including G Master™ models.

When the transition to Sony is complete, AP’s video journalists and photographers will for the first time be equipped with the same brand of cameras, allowing for seamless collaboration among the news agency’s journalists as they tell the world’s stories in whatever medium is right for the moment.

AP visual journalists will be able to share Sony cameras and lenses, as well as the images they capture, to produce a news report unhindered by technical limitations.

“The new mirrorless technology in Sony’s cameras allows for a completely silent operation, meaning our photojournalists can work in environments without interrupting the scene around them,” said AP Director of Photography J. David Ake. “This is a huge leap forward in photojournalism.”

In addition to delivery of product, AP and Sony will work together to improve workflow and efficiency of field operations, including testing of 5G capabilities.

Sony offers 5G through its Xperia™ product line, which uses technology from its professional monitors, cameras and audio devices.

DJI partners with RMUS to expand its UTC training program to North America

Drone operations, when implemented properly, save time, money and effort across numerous industries. The drone industry has grown exponentially in the past few years. In 2015, there were only a few hundred remote pilots available for hire. Thanks to the affordable and accessible Part 107 ruling, that was implemented by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in August 2016, there are now well over 100,000 remote pilots with certification to fly commercially across the U.S.

As enterprises and governments start incorporating drones into their daily workflow, the need for streamlined and efficient training programs has never been greater. DJI, the world’s top drone manufacturer, recently partnered with Rocky Mountain Unmanned Systems (RMUS) to expand its Unmanned Aerial Systems Training Center (UTC) program to North America.

The program will utilize RMUS’ eight training centers located in Utah, Washington, California, Hawaii, Delaware, Ohio, Texas, and Illinois. Each location will start off using Commercial UAS Training – Level 1, a new curriculum that provides a foundation for developing the knowledge and skills to pilot an unmanned aircraft. Training will be conducted both online and on-site. Compact, lightweight Tello drones from Ryze Robotics will be used for basic flight training.

Once on sight training and the successful passing of an administered exam is completed, individuals will receive UTC certification. The program will be available this June at all eight centers. Learn more and reserve a spot here.

Flickr partners with Pixsy to create end-to-end platform for protecting image copyrights

Flickr has announced a new strategic partnership with Pixsy, an online legal-tech service that helps photographers protect and enforce their copyrights. The new partnership allows Flickr Pro users an end-to-end solution to track their images and take legal action in the event a photograph is stolen and used illegally.

Starting today, Flickr Pro members can integrate their Flickr images with Pixsy’s advanced monitoring and protection platform which allows access to 1,000 monitored images, 10 DMCA takedown notices and unlimited case submissions.

When a copyright infringement is detected by Pixsy, an alert will be sent to the user with the option to decide what should be done next. The press release says ‘Photographers have access to a comprehensive case resolution service to recover lost licensing revenue and damages, along with the tools to register images with the US Copyright office and send automated DMCA takedown notice.’

Pixsy works alongside law firms around the globe on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis. Pixsy says it’s handled more than 70,000 copyright infringement cases to date, resulting in millions of dollars in lost revenue.

To get started, head to your account settings page on Flickr, locate Pixsy under the ‘Pro Perks’ section and select ‘Redeem.’ From there you’ll be directed to Pixsy, where you will link your Flickr and Pixsy accounts.

Craft brewery partners with Kodak to create a beer that doubles as film developer

Delaware craft brewery Dogfish Head has teamed up with Kodak to create SuperEIGHT, an analog-inspired Super Gose beer designed specifically to develop film.

Sam Calagione, founder and CEO of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, was recording an episode of The Kodakery, a podcast created by Kodak, when he learned that with the right levels of acidity and vitamin C, it would be possible to create a beer capable of developing film. Coincidentally enough, the research and development team at Dogfish was already working on a beer with properties that would align perfectly with those needed for developing film, and so SuperEIGHT was born.

After further developing the ‘super-refreshing, sessionable Super Gose,’ the Dogfish Head team sent a few batches over to Kodak for testing and sure enough, it worked. The resulting footage, seen in sample footage above, isn’t nearly as impressive as dedicated developers, but for a beer we’d say it’s pretty darn impressive. Kodak and Dogfish Head even shared a recipe for the development, which can be downloaded and printed off.

As for the beer itself, SuperEIGHT has an alcohol content of 5.3% and ‘is made with eight heroic ingredients including prickly pear, mango, boysenberry, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, kiwi juices and a touch of quinoa, along with an ample addition of Hawaiian sea salt.’

Dogfish Head Craft Brewery will start shipping six packs of 355ml (12 fl oz) cans in April 2019.

Skylum partners with EyeEm to launch global photography scholarship

Software company Skylum and mobile image sharing community EyeEm have teamed up and launched a global photography scholarship that is open to anyone interested in photography. Skylum Software will be supporting 10 artists on the EyeEm platform with $ 10,000 to help them focus on their photography.

In addition the selected photographers will be able to create editing presets for the Skylum Luminar software. The presets will be available to purchase on the Luminar marketplace as part of a special collection. Revenue from preset sales will be shared 1/3 with the artists.

Skylum CEO Alex Tsepko said: “Our focus has always been to provide artists with the best photo enhancement tools, and collaborating with a creative community like EyeEm to empower next generation of creatives is just a natural fit”.

If you want to apply for the scholarship you’ll need an EyeEm acccount, have an impressive portfolio, and convince the decision makers that your work is standing out. Submissions are open from now until December 2. You’ll find more information and the submission form on the EyeEm website.

Magnum Photos partners with Scottish distillery to release limited-edition whisky

To celebrate the construction of a new $ 178 million distillery, Scottish whisky distillery Macallan has partnered with the international photo cooperative Magnum Photos and six of its photographers to create the Macallan Masters of Photography: Magnum Edition. The limited-edition box-set includes input and images from some of Magnum’s most well-known photographers, including Steve McCurry, Martin Parr, Paolo Pellegrin, Mark Power, Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Alec Soth.

Inside the vibrant portfolio-style packaging is bottle of highland single malt whisky, crafted by drawing from eight different casks, each of which was chosen ‘to reflect the photography style of each of the Magnum photographers and to represent Magnum itself.’ The whisky’s color is a ‘deep amber with rose gold hues’ and smells of ‘hints of peat layered into warm spiced ginger with mellow oak notes.’

Six 11×14-inch signed prints from each of the Magnum Photos photographers are included inside the box, which was designed to look like the ‘classic photographic portfolio boxes on display at the Magnum studio.’

As part of the collaboration, each of the six photographers went to Scotland to capture images of the new distillery in various stages of construction. Magnum Photos has shared a wonderful post highlighting the photographs each artists captured.

This isn’t the first time Macallen has partnered with photographers, either. The Macallan has released multiple limited-edition Masters of Photography Series, celebrating the achievements and work of photographers including Annie Leibovitz, Elliot Erwitt, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Albert Watson and Rankin.

The Macallan Masters of Photography: Magnum Edition is limited to 2,000 units and is currently available around the world for $ 3,500.

Ricoh partners with 360° content social platform Spinnable

Ricoh has partnered with Spinnable, a social sharing platform dedicated to 360-degree content. The partnership allows Ricoh Theta S owners to directly upload 360-degree videos recorded with the camera to Spinnable. The Spinnable platform is currently available as an iOS app, and will soon be launched for Android, Samsung Gear, and desktop, as well.

The Ricoh Theta S is a consumer handheld camera that records 360-degree high-definition video via a 14MP image sensor, wide-angle lenses, and Ricoh’s own ultra-small twin-lens folded-optical system. Currently, Theta users can only upload their creations to YouTube, Google Street View and Ricoh’s website. Spinnable opens up another option to Theta users, who will be able to view and pan around within the video using either their phone’s integrated gyroscope or by swiping a finger.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Spinnable co-founder and CEO Mark Demarest said, ‘Although Spinnable is hardware agnostic, we’ve chosen the Ricoh Theta S as the first camera to directly integrate with Spinnable because of its compact form factor, image quality and price point.’ Spinnable users can now purchase the Ricoh Theta S directly through the app, as well.
