Video: FedEx contractor throws package containing $1,500 Canon lens

19 Nov

A viral video shared by photographer Greg Riegler over this past weekend highlights the problem of carriers mishandling packages — in this case, a package containing a $ 1,500 Canon lens. The video was captured by a video doorbell security camera and recently detailed by Riegler on Reddit.

The video shows an individual claimed to be a delivery driver in training carrying the box across the lawn, only to throw it across what appears to be 10-15ft onto the porch and into the door. The entire process was pointless, as the video shows the trainee walking back to the unmarked van, only to return with a second individual wearing the FedEx logo. A slip was ultimately left at the door and the package was returned to the truck.

In a comment on Reddit, Reigler said:

This happened yesterday, I’ve been in contact with FedEx and the local distribution center. It’s a contractor, and the guy tossing the box seems to be training, which is crazy he already doesn’t care about his job … I know packages are supposed to be packed in a way they can handle drops and what not, but they shouldn’t be intentionally mishandled.

Riegler reports that an actual FedEx employee, not a contractor, delivered the package the next day and that the lens appeared to be unharmed upon inspection.

Waste-Free Future: 5 Package Redesigns for Everyday Products

07 Jan

packaging redesigns

Starting with name-brand versions of popular products found in virtually any home, this designer has come up with a series of clever solutions to eliminating the waste from each package system on a case-by-case basis.

waste free bag roll

Aaron Mickelson took on this challenge as a master’s thesis project at the Pratt Institute, asking (and answering) the question: can any product be truly garbage-free, leaving little or nothing unused in its wake? The strategies employed here are also potentially versatile – each could be applied to a type or category of packaging (and would-be trash).

wasteless bag design concept

waste free garbage bags

The bag of garbage bags design for GLAD products is fairly straightforward, to the point where one has to wonder why they are not using this strategy already: the last bag contains the rest of the bags, both to make it functional as a bag itself but also to leave it as a reminder to buy more bags (which you can see coming thanks to it being partially transparent as well).

waste free packaging concept

no waste consumer pods

wasteless dishwasher pods package

wasteless pod washing machine

The laundry (or dish) pods for Tide are designed to dissolve in water, leaving nothing behind that you need to take out of the wash, obviating the need for a container entirely.

waste free food boxes

waste free container design

waste free pop containers

The OXO pop containers feature soap-soluble ink that breaks down when you wash it, taking the branding materials with it and leaving you with an all-purpose container. As a bonus: these could also come pre-loaded with food rather than simply sold as containers, too, allowing you to buy products then keep the plastic boxes for other uses.

wasted packaging milk bar

waste free soap box

The Nivea bar of soap comes in a septic-safe dissolving paper wrapper that you can bring into the shower or bath with you and not have to worry about throwing out, eliminating a step as well as reducing landfill.

no consumer packing waste

no waste tea bags

Finally, this Twining tea bag variant eliminates the wax lining that typically prevents composting and instead integrates each tea packet directly into the compost-friendly packaging design that unfolds like an accordion for use.

13 Dec

Petzval-news.png

Lomography has announced that its Kickstarter-funded Petzval portrait lens is now available for pre-order in Canon and Nikon mounts. Based on a 19th century optical design, the 85mm F2.2 lens has a brass lens barrel, a ‘gear rack’ manual focusing mechanism using a knob on the side of the barrel, and a set of drop-in ‘Waterhouse stops’ to change the aperture. The pre-order package costs $ 599 from Lomography’s website, with a current delivery estimate of May 2014.

Our Fujifilm X-M1 review: big photo quality in a small package?

17 Sep

X-M1_Black_Front_16-50mm.png

We’ve completed our review of the Fujifilm X-M1, which is the company’s lowest-priced X-Trans-based mirrorless camera. It takes the sensor from the X-E1 and X-Pro1 and puts it in a simpler, more portable body. Fujifilm also added a tilting 3-inch LCD and Wi-Fi, which puts the X-M1 on much the same level as mirrorless cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GF6 and Sony NEX-5T. For a detailed look at the X-M1, follow the link.

06 Feb

It has been two weeks since we announced our brand new eBook – Portraits: Making the Shot by Gina Milicia.

The feedback from readers has been wonderful and many have snapped up our launch offer that gets you a second ‘portrait recipes’ eBook by Gina for free when you buy the first.

Today I’m excited to announce a further bonus for anyone (anywhere in the world) who buys this eBook in the next 2 weeks (and anyone who has already picked it up).

One person who grabs Gina’s eBook is going to win $ 1000 towards a new lens/lenses and some personal mentoring by Gina herself.

  • 3 hours worth of mentoring and a folio review from Gina via Skype (details below) – worth $ 600

The Mentoring sessions with Gina includes:

GinaMilica12-1WEB.jpgThis is your opportunity for some one on one time with the author of our eBook to work on your portrait photography!

Gina Milicia has photographed some of the world’s most powerful and famous people including royalty and heads of state, billionaires and a-list celebrities and been on location in some of the world’s most exotic places.
