IBC 2020 latest show to be cancelled, go virtual as organizers fear ‘many unknowns’

19 May

The International Broadcasting Convention (IBC), scheduled to take place in Amsterdam this September, has become the latest industry exhibition to get canceled as the coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt events around the world.

Organizers cited ‘many unknowns’ around the shape of restrictions for social distancing and measures that would have to be in place to make the show safe for visitors and exhibitors alike. ‘It has become clear that a return to (a new) normal is unlikely to be achieved by September’ CEO Michael Crimp says in a statement on the show’s website.

Crimp says the decision to cancel now, while the show was still four months away, was to allow exhibitors to plan for the future and not spend money and time on the event only to have it canceled at a later date. He also says the show will use its digital platform, IBC365, to support the industry and hints that there will be some form of a virtual show on the channel this year, before the physical show returns in 2021.
For more information see the IBC Show website.

Press release:

IBC2020 Cancelled due to Covid-19

I hope you are safe and well, as we continue to adapt to the changing world in which we find ourselves. Following on from my previous statement I wanted to give you an update on the developments and situation at IBC.

As previously outlined, the IBC team has been focused on assessing and developing appropriate plans for IBC2020 this September at the RAI Amsterdam.

Within these plans it is crucial that IBC can deliver a safe and successful environment. However, as governments announce the route forward, it has become clear that a return to (a new) normal is unlikely to be achieved by September.

It has also become evident, through our dialogue with the IBC community, that an early decision is preferential for the industry so it can plan for the future.

Right now, despite the best work of the IBC team and our Dutch colleagues, there are still many unknowns. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to deliver a safe and valuable event to the quality expected of IBC.

It is also evident that important aspects of a large-scale event such as IBC will be greatly altered by social distancing, travel restrictions, masks etc. so much so that the spirit of IBC will be compromised.

With that in mind and based on what we know at this point, it is with a heavy heart IBC has made the difficult decision to cancel the IBC2020 show. You may have seen IBC and the IABM surveys on this topic. Evidence gathered from these IBC stakeholders helps to confirm this decision.

Whilst this is hugely disappointing for us all, IBC will continue to play a vital role in supporting the industry to get back on track wherever we are able.

For more than 50 years, IBC has provided the central annual meeting place for the Media, Entertainment & Technology community. For example, over the coming months IBC will continue to engage with the industry through its digital platform IBC365. Details of our plans will follow soon.

Your views continue to help shape IBC. If you have suggestions, questions or concerns regarding this decision and announcement please do not hesitate to contact us using our dedicated email address: use our dedicated email address statusupdates@ibc.org

My very best wishes to all of you during this time of unprecedented challenges and I look forward to welcoming you next year at IBC2021, in Amsterdam.

Kind regards,
Michael Crimp
CEO IBC

Organizers say Photokina 2020 is still set to go according to schedule, despite growing COVID-19 concerns

29 Feb

This week, representatives from Koelnmesse, the organization behind Photokina 2020, sat down for a press conference in Cologne, Germany to address, amongst other details, concerns surrounding whether or not Photokina 2020 will take place as cases of COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe.

At the press conference, Koelnmesse Vice President, Christoph Werner, said ‘At this time, there is no reason to halt a large-scale event like [Photokina 2020],’ according to translated text from DC Watch. This statement was made even after consulting with the World Health Organization (WHO), the German Federal Ministry of Health and local authorities, according to Werner.

‘At this time, there is no reason to halt a large-scale event like [Photokina 2020]’

Kai Hillebrand, Chairman of the German Association of Photography, further elaborated at the press conference, saying ‘As long as the health authorities do not announce that trade fairs should be stopped in Europe, [the decision to participate] will be at the discretion of the exhibitors.’

In mid-September, well before the rise of the COVID-19 virus, Leica, Nikon and Olympus were confirmed to have dropped out of the tradeshow. Three months later, on December 6, Photokina confirmed Canon, Panasonic and Sony would be present for the 2020 event. No more than ten days later it was confirmed by PetaPixel that Fujifilm, too, would be absent from the show.

Between the departure of four major brands and the ongoing Coronavirus concerns, it doesn’t look promising for the Photokina 2020, despite being three months out. That said, until further notice, it seems as though everything is still set to go according to schedule, even as WHO raises the global risk of COVID-19 from ‘high’ to ‘very high’

Open-plan offices with simplified furniture may look nice and minimalist, but they typically lack built-in storage and organization, making it hard to wrangle all the little things you need to use each day. That calls for some creative solutions that won’t make a cluttered situation even worse. These modern desk organizers are up to the task, and they look good, too.

The shaped wire that makes up the Sketch Desk Tidy by Block mimics the look of a drawing that’s been translated into a 3D form suggestive of a building. The powder-coated steel cage in blue or black rests upon a wooden base to hold pens and other small office items.

Poppin, a New York-based shop for modern office products, teamed up with students from the Rochester Institute of Technology for this edition of ‘Metaproject’ to deliver a series of economical, reproducible yet aesthetically pleasing and highly functional accessories. The results solve a lot of storage problems commonly seen in workspaces, especially those that have switched to a minimalist open-plan design scheme that leaves no room for drawers, hooks and cabinets. The creations include the High-Rise Hanging Family, modular organizers that fit over a felt divider; Branch Holder for your keys, bags and headphones; The Booster Desk so you can stand up when you feel like it; the Munch Mat Takeout Bag so you don’t make a mess with your lunch, and the Task Chair Overhanger for purses, scarves and jackets.

Cliff Riser with Built-In Storage

This simple steel riser is more than just a way to elevate your monitor – it has two drawers built into the side to hold small items like tape dispensers and staplers or personal effects. The Cliff by Heckler Design comes in six colors and is just the right size to be useful without taking up too much desk space.

Do you have trouble keeping track of a bunch of different external storage devices like USB thumb drives? Instead of tossing them all in a drawer, keep them handy and visible with the Memory City USB Station. This plastic diorama of train stations scenery includes slots for thumb drives and flash cards, which then tower over the scene like skyscrapers.

Surprises in Storage: 14 Clever Compartments & Organizers

07 Jul

Rejecting the idea that storage furniture needs to be hyper-functional above all, these innovative bookcases, credenzas, wardrobes, tables and shelves put the focus on unusual shapes and unexpected uses. These exceptionally well-designed storage solutions stand out, whether by hiding compartments in novel places, stacking modules in new ways or making a visual statement as sculpture.

Opening in Waves

Why should every item of storage furniture open via drawers and doors? ‘Wave’ by Sebastian Errazuriz turns the process of retrieving and replacing your stored items into a sort of artistic display with credenzas and armoires that open in entirely unexpected ways. “I don’t know where the line is between art and design,” he says. “It’s important to me that a project consist of just a little twist, because I ultimately want people to see the obvious, the everyday differently.”

Architecture As a Cabinet

OMA’s monumental CCTV headquarters building is recreated in furniture form by designer Nathan Li, turning it into a combination bench and storage case with cutouts in the wood mimicking the structure’s gridded glass facade.

Pin Press Storage

This pin press design by OOO My Design brings a childhood toy into full-scale as a functional item. Press the pins in any which way you want to create little pockets in custom sizes and shapes, perfectly fitting whatever objects you need to store.

Storage As a Perfectly Stacked Sculpture

storage sculpture

Everyone who’s ever packed a moving truck as full as it can possibly get or jammed a bunch of stuff into a closet knows that the problem with this carefully Tetris’ed design lies in the fact that once you take something out, getting it back the way it was is near impossible. Still, it’s an impressive example of compressing a whole lot of stuff into the smallest possible space (and is actually a sculptural installation by Michael Johansson rather than a real storage cabinet.)

Table with Secret Storage

Virtually every compartment built into this wooden table by Naoki Hirakoso opens in a different way, so as you feel along the visible seams trying to open them,  you’ll have to alternately push, pull, slide and lift. The seams produce abstract lines when the piece is fully closed.
