Luminar Neo to debut this winter

Skylum has announced yet another eye-catching photo-editing program, Luminar Neo, billing the software as “a creative image editor driven by AI technologies of the future.”

As the company behind Luminar 4 and Luminar AI – programs that debuted innovative, AI-based tools such as AI Sky Replacement and Composition AI – Skylum is no stranger to success in the AI photo editing market. And Luminar Neo aims to improve upon the Skylum formula, offering amateur photographers an AI route to pro-level edits, along with higher-level control for advanced shooters.

Yet Luminar Neo isn’t a simple Luminar AI iteration. According to Skylum, Luminar Neo “is a quintessence of all [the company’s] applications released to date,” and “will retain almost all of Luminar AI’s features” but add “all-new, cutting-edge, AI-powered tools.” 

For current Luminar AI users wondering whether it makes sense to upgrade, Skylum spells out the difference between Luminar AI and Luminar Neo:

“Luminar AI is the easiest-to-use image editor fully powered by artificial intelligence for those who prefer a time-saving, Template-driven workflow for quick results…Luminar Neo is for those who want more editing options and more creative control.”

In other words, while anyone – including complete beginners – will feel at home in Luminar AI, the new Luminar Neo pushes in the direction of programs like Luminar 4 and Adobe Lightroom Classic, both offering a slew of tools for enthusiasts and pros alike.

Skylum has already teased a handful of new Luminar Neo tools, including a powerful photo relighting option, intelligent background switching, sensor dust removal, power line removal, and some form of AI masking, but we’ll have to wait to learn precisely how these features work and who they’re for.

Luminar Neo has no release date – the promotional materials merely claim a “winter” launch – though you can expect an announcement sometime in the next few months. An early December release would make sense, given the upcoming holiday season. And if you know you want Luminar Neo, you can preorder a one-time license for $ 54 USD.

So who should think about buying Luminar Neo? The new program should suit serious hobbyists all the way up through advanced amateurs (and potentially even pros). If you like the idea of creative AI effects but still want to be in control, Neo is likely a better pick than Luminar AI. On the other hand, if you’re looking for an ultra-easy, no-effort-necessary editor, Luminar AI is the better option.

Nikon Will Offer 27 Z Mount Lenses Before 2022 Is Out

Nikon’s Z lens roadmap has expanded substantially over the past two years – and the company’s most recent roadmap update promises a total of 27 Z-mount lenses before the close of 2022.

It’s a clear sign that Nikon is devoted to their mirrorless system, which debuted just over two years ago with the Nikon Z7 but has remained limited in both camera and lens selection. But while a complete set of lenses is a long way off, it’s nice to know that Nikon is willing to dig in and create a mirrorless lineup that will eventually compete with the current heavy hitters.

So what lenses can you expect from Nikon over the next couple of years?

The existing set of Z mount lenses already offers a lot of the basics (note that this includes lenses coming out over the next couple of months):

  • A handful of fast primes and zooms for professional and amateur portrait shooters, including the 50mm f/1.2, the 35mm f/1.8, and the 24-70mm f/2.8
  • A few cheaper zooms, such as the 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3, the 24-200mm f/4-6.3, and the 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3
  • Some excellent glass for landscape photographers, including a 24-70mm f/4, a 70-200mm f/2.8, and a 14-24mm f/2.8

However, despite a core set of strong Z mount options, Nikon has failed to offer a few “standards,” including a faster 85mm lens (e.g., an 85mm f/1.4), as well as a 70-200mm f/4 (for hobbyist landscape photographers, among others). The Z-mount lineup continues to lack lenses for specialized shooters, as well – such as super-telephoto primes and zooms, plus a macro lens or two.

Which is where the Nikon Z mount roundmap comes in.

While the roadmap doesn’t address all of these gaps, it does promise a number of powerful lenses, including:

  • A 24-105mm lens
  • An 85mm lens (likely an f/1.4 version!)
  • Both a 50mm and a 105mm macro lens
  • Four super-telephoto lenses, including a 200-600mm zoom, a 100-400mm zoom, a 400mm prime, and a 600mm prime

If you’re a bird, wildlife, or even sports photographer, then Nikon’s Z system is going to become a lot more appealing over the next couple of years, as Nikon fills in its super-telephoto gap (with a 200-600mm and a 100-400mm option, no less!).

The same is true for macro photographers, who will pounce on Nikon’s 105mm micro lens (though I do wish Nikon would offer a 180mm or 200mm Z mount macro lens; maybe it’ll be added to a future roadmap).

Regardless, Nikon’s Z system is becoming more and more well-rounded – and the addition of these lenses will simply broaden its appeal.

Nikon offer lets you trade up any camera to a Nikon Z5 with a special $100 bonus offer

Nikon has announced an introductory trade-in offer for photographers interested in Nikon’s new entry-level full-frame mirrorless Z5 camera. From now through one month following the Z5’s August 27, 2020 release date, customers will be able to trade-in any working camera from any brand and save $ 100 USD on the Z5, in addition to the trade-in value of their camera. This deal is available retroactively as well, ensuring that those who already preordered through Nikon directly or through an authorized reseller can still get in on this new deal.

The basics of the deal are as follows. You visit Nikon’s dedicated trade-in website to get a quote for your camera. You then purchase a new Z5 (or Z50, Z6 or Z7, albeit without the $ 100 USD bonus). Next, you send Nikon your old camera, with Nikon covering the cost of ground shipping. Once the camera has been received and checked over, Nikon will send you a refund.

As an example, let’s consider the (plausible) case of a Nikon D750 owner wishing to trade-up to a new mirrorless camera, while still being able to use their existing full-frame F-mount lenses via Nikon’s FTZ adapter. Further, let’s assume that the camera is in excellent condition, meaning it shows minimal wear and functions properly. In this case, Nikon will offer $ 495 trade-in value, plus an additional $ 100 with the ongoing promotion. ‘Good’ and ‘poor’ conditions are also available to select, although all three conditions require the camera to function properly. You cannot trade-in a camera that is not functional.

If Nikon determines that the quality of the camera is less than you stated during the trade-in quote process, you will be eligible to return the Z5. However, you will otherwise forfeit the $ 100 bonus if you, for any other reason, return the camera. As expected, there additional terms and conditions to consider, the full list of which can be viewed here.

To participate in the trade-in program, you must have the Z camera shipped to a valid US address. You can trade-in multiple cameras when purchasing multiple Z cameras, but only a single trade-in can be applied per camera, so there is no way to combine $ 100 bonuses on a single Z5 purchase.

Nikon has published a Frequently Asked Questions list for their Z camera trade-in program as well. Before participating in the program, it is highly recommended reading. There is included information worth highlighting.

You can trade in any camera in working condition, not just a digital camera nor only an interchangeable lens camera. Cameras not listed as trade-in options are eligible and Nikon will send a quote within 1-2 business days of receiving your submitted information, in most cases. You cannot trade standalone lenses in as part of the promotion, however, some kit lenses are included in the promotion, such as a Nikon D3000 and accompanying 18-55mm VR kit lens, for example. If you are worried about being without a camera, fret not as Nikon will ship your new Z camera with free two-day shipping and you aren’t required to send in your trade-in camera until your new Z camera has arrived.

Nikon to offer beta webcam utility software in August

Camera manufacturers were quick to recognize that a pandemic-induced rise in video conferencing would spark interest in higher-quality webcam footage. Soon, Nikon shooters will also be able to get in on the fun. The company will release its own free webcam utility software – in beta form – to Windows 10 users for starters. Nikon says the software will be compatible with ‘many’ of its Z-series cameras and DSLRs. Head to Nikon’s site for more details.

ProGrade Digital’s new CFexpress Type B cards offer read speeds up to 1,700MB/S

The two capacities available in ProGrade Digital’s ‘Cobalt label’

ProGrade Digital has announced the release of its new CFexpress Type B memory cards, which offer higher capacities and improved speeds over previous-generation CFexpress cards.

The new CFexpress Type B cards use an NVMe host interface with PCIe Gen3 X2 to offer read speeds up to 1,700MB/s and burst write speeds up to 1,500MB/s — that’s 1.7GB/s and 1.5GB/s, respectively for the ‘Cobalt label’ cards. In addition to the ‘Cobalt label’ cards, ProGrade Digital is also launching a line of ‘Gold label’ CFexpress Type B cards that offers up to 1,700MB/s read speeds, but only guarantees a sustained write speed up to 400MB/s, depending on the card capacity.

Blackjet’s CFexpress Type B and XQD card reader, 4-bay Cinema Dock offer Thunderbolt 3 performance

Blackjet has two relatively new storage peripherals: the new TX-4DS four-bay Cinema Dock with Thunderbolt 3 and the TX-1CXQ reader for CFexpress Type B and XQD cards. Both products offer rapid data transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s due to the inclusion of Thunderbolt 3, making them suitable for users who often shoot Ultra HD footage, manage data-heavy projects or who need to rapidly transfer large batches of images between drives.

The Blackjet TX-1CXQ Thunderbolt 3 hub features support for CFexpress Type B cards and Sony XQD / XQD 2.0 cards with ingest speeds up to 1600MB/s and 500MB/s, respectively. The hub is powered by the Thunderbolt 3 cable that connects the device to the user’s computer. The TX-1CXQ works with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12 and higher.

The model is priced at $ 199 but is listed on multiple online retailer websites as on backorder without clear availability or shipping dates at this time.

Joining the card reader is the Blackjet TX-4DS Thunderbolt 3 Cinema dock, which features four M.2 NVMe SSD enclosures, dual Thunderbolt 3 ports for daisy-chaining up to five Thunderbolt devices (displays, external drives, etc.), and optional reader modules for directly turning the inputs into CFast 2.0, XQD, SDXC, SSD, SxS and CFexpress card readers.

The TX-4DS features a built-in cooling fan and can be configured with RAID 0, RAID 1 and JBOD using the included software. The unit measures 120 x 145 x 155mm (4.7 x 5.7 x 6.1in); it is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12 or higher.

ProGrade Digital’s new microSDXC cards offer faster speeds at lower prices

ProGrade Digital has released an updated line of UHS-II microSDXC cards that offer improved read and write speeds at a lower cost than ProGrade’s previous microSDXC lineup.

The new microSDXC UHS-II V60 memory cards feature read and burst write speeds up to 250MB/s and 130MB/s, respectively, a 50MB/s increase in both departments compared to their predecessors. Sustained, the cards only guarantee 60MB/s write speeds, as denoted by the V60 label. Despite the increased performance, the lineup, which now includes a 256GB option will retail for much less than the cards they’re replacing.

The 64GB, 128GB and 256GB cards retail for $ 34.99, $ 54.99 and $ 99.99, respectively; that’s $ 15 and $ 45 less than the previously available 64GB and 128GB cards, respectively. In addition to a three-year warranty, all cards will come with a UHS-II SD adapter and ProGrade’s Refresh Pro software for keeping tabs on the health of the cards.

It doesn’t appear as though other retails have listed the new cards yet, but both the 64GB and 128GB versions are available to purchase on ProGrade Digital’s website. The 256GB option will be available sometime in the second quarter of 2020, according to ProGrade Digital.

Something worth keeping in mind when looking for these cards is to make sure you’re getting these new, updated cards, rather than the old cards. The design on the cards is effectively identical with the only noticeable difference being the read speeds printed on the cards. The old cards will read ‘200MB/s’ while the new cards will read ‘250MB/s.’

Canon confirms the EOS R5 will capture internal 8K/30p video, offer ‘advanced animal AF’

In an uncharacteristic move, Canon Australia has published a press release revealing a number of new details pertaining to the specifications of its upcoming EOS R5 mirrorless camera, in what appears to be an effort to quiet the ongoing speculation regarding what ‘8K’ capabilities the camera will offer. Spoiler alert: Canon’s video-limiting days may be over.

Canon confirms in the press release the EOS R5 will offer 8K internal video recording using the full width of the sensor at up to 30 frames per second (fps). In addition to no crop shooting, Canon notes all 8k modes for the EOS R5 will support Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology.

Canon also says the R5 will support ‘advanced animal AF – recognising dogs, cats and birds, relying not only on the eyes of the animal but also the face and body for situations when the eyes are not visible.’

Historically, Canon has been suspected to limit the video capabilities of its non-cinema camera products in order to minimize cannibalization, a name given to the problem of losing sales within a company’s own product lineup by putting what’s considered premium features and capabilities in lower-cost products.

These new details don’t confirm Canon has taken an entirely altruistic approach to its EOS R camera development, but it does show Canon is getting serious about video in its mirrorless lineup and is determined to make a statement in the market compared to the likes of the Sony’s a7 III and Nikon’s Z7, two full-frame mirrorless cameras that have, until now, been above and beyond what Canon has offered with its EOS R and RP mirrorless cameras.

ShutterGrip 2 wireless smartphone grip aims to offer camera-like ergonomics

The team behind smartphone accessory ShutterGrip is back with an updated version of the product called ShutterGrip 2. The new iteration of ShutterGrip has been refined to offer improved ergonomics and appearance, adding a metallic finish and a non-slip grip.

In addition to its built-in selfie stick, the ShutterGrip 2 features a threaded 1/4-inch tripod mount, integrated hex wrench for tightening the hinge, a cold shoe for mounting accessories, support for both right- and left-hand usage, as well as vertical and landscape modes for different shooting styles.

ShutterGrip 2 is compatible with Android smartphones and iPhones using Bluetooth 4.0. With an assumed average of 500 button presses per day, the ShutterGrip 2’s battery will last for six months of continuous use or 18 months in standby mode using a CR2032 button battery. Despite its various features, the device is compact at 190mm x 76mm (7.49in x 2.99in).

The ShutterGrip 2 is compatible with the iPhone 5 and newer models, as well as the Samsung A6+ through the flagship Galaxy S10 and Note 10 handsets. Eary bird units are being offered to Kickstarter backers who pledge at least $ 35; shipping is estimated to start in February 2020.

Tetenal to offer ‘Magic-Box’ single-roll film developing kits for testing the waters

The revived photochemistry company Tetenal has announced the impending release of a one-roll development kit for those wanting to try out film photography or those wanting a kit to take on-location. The Magic-Box series will include all the chemicals needed to process a roll of negative film, a transparency film or 23 sheets of 8x10in color paper, with the chemistry arriving in pre-measured quantities.

Available only in German-speaking regions at first, the company says it will extend distribution in time, as it gets production up to speed. The new company, Tetenal 1847, has risen from the ashes of the former Tetenal business after employees got together to take on the company after it faced collapse at the beginning of the year. The new business has an online store already and is beginning, it says, to work on new products – including tablet form photochemistry. In fact, though, the old Tetenal used to produce tablet chemicals as well as one-shot processing kits some time ago, but it is great to see them come back to life again.

According to the website Emulsive prices for the new Magic-Box kits will be:

  • TETENAL Magic Box RA-4: €14.95
  • TETENAL Magic-Box E6: €15.95
  • TETENAL Magic-Box C-41: €12.95

New Products for analog photography from Tetenal 1847.

In the meantime, the employee-based initiative to save Tetenal has developed to a more than 40 people strong and still growing StartUp, in order to continue Tetenal ?s pivotal role in the analog photography industry. Out of the old Tetenal, the new company, Tetenal 1847, has formed with the claim to develop innovative and new products for analog photography.

Vinyl records and instant photography have shown that a new demand for “nostalgic” products has formed with a target audience that did not grow up with these very technologies initially. This is the case with analog photography as well. Be it a camera found on the grandparent ?s attic, or bought directly from the used equipment dealership, cameras, film and the overall “style” of shooting connected with it are increasingly in demand again. “The fascination of analog photography does, however, not end with the exposure of the film”, says Carsten Gehring, who together with Stefania Grimme has taken over leadership of Tetenal 1864 GmbH. He points out that the team in Norderstedt have made it their expressed goal to proliferate the fascination about analog photography even to households not previously associated with developing film. This claim is clearly visible on the new products leaving the factory in Norderstedt as well: “Magic-Box – Discover the magic of film development.”

The Magic-Box C-41 and Magic-Box E6 contain pre scaled concentrates to develop exactly one colour negative or colour slide film in 135 or 120 formats conveniently at home. The product line is completed by the Magic-Box RA-4 for 23 8×10 sized colour enlargements on photographic paper.

For the time being, the products are being launched in the German speaking market but will successively be made available in other markets as well.

This, however, is not the end, but merely the beginning. Product developers in Norderstedt already are working on the next innovation – tabletized photochemistry. Already leaked here and there, and even part of Tetenal ?s rich history, these tablets will again simplify developing film substantially.

Something is developing in Norderstedt again. This time, literally.
