Atomos is working on a Ninja V update to bring 12-bit 4K/30p ProRes RAW to Nikon Z6 II, Z7 II cameras

The cameras haven’t even his the shelves of retailers yet and already Atomos has announced its Ninja V monitor/recorder will support ProRes RAW recording over HDMI on Nikon’s forthcoming Z6 II and Z7 II camera systems.

While both the Z6 II and Z7 II have respectable internal recording capabilities in their own right — 4K/60p for the Z7 II out of the box and with the Z6 II via a future firmware update — the addition of ProRes RAW recording further adds to the creative capabilities of Nikon’s latest mirrorless cameras.

Atomos says both the Z6 II and Z7 II will be able to output up to 4K/30p 12-bit ProRes RAW video over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V recorder when it receives an AtomOS firmware update later this year. Atomos also notes that Nikon’s N-Log profile is fully supported in its AtomHDR monitoring pipeline ‘with the ability to add built in 709 preview, custom 3D LUTs and LOG to HDR conversion for both monitoring and output.’

Atomos Ninja V adds ProRes RAW capture to GFX 100, Sigma fp over HDMI

Atomos has released the latest firmware update for its popular Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables ProRes RAW capture over HDMI with the Fujifilm GFX 100 and Sigma fp camera systems.

Fujifilm GFX 100

On a GFX 100 running firmware version 2.01 or later, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW video at up to 30p over HDMI. This marks the first time users can capture Raw footage on the large format camera.

If you don’t need the Raw video, the Atomos firmware update also enables 10-bit 422 ProRes and DNx 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) capture up to 30p or 4K DCI (4096?×?2160) at up to 24p. Multiple monitoring modes have also been added for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

Sigma fp

Moving onto the Sigma fp, the Ninja V can now record 12-bit ProRes RAW at 4K DCI up to 24p or 4K UHD up to 30p over HDMI using the full width of the sensor. You can even capture 120p (119.88p) 12-bit ProRes Raw if you knock the resolution down to 1080.

10-bit ProRes 422 and DNx can also be recorded at 30p and 120p (119.88p) at 4K UHD and 1080 resolutions, respectively, if you don’t need Raw footage. Like the GFX 100, multiple monitoring modes have also been included for viewing and playing back Raw footage.

With the installation of this update if not previously activated users will be required to activate ProRes RAW, as a codec.

Known limitations

SIGMA fp

• In some instances when using LUTs banding artifacts may be observed in some areas of the display on the Ninja V for

4KUHD video modes. (This behaviour is only limited to the display of the Ninja V and not the recordings).

• On occasion if the camera is. powered down whilst connect to the Ninja V and set to RAW mode, the Ninja V may enter a locked state.

– Switch between Record and Play back mode, Unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI, or Power cycling Switching will all resolve this issue.

• ISO metadata reported in Final Cut Pro X may occasionally be incorrect if using 1/3 EV ISO adjustments on the camera. – Incorrect for camera ISO setting 1000, 8000, 16000.

• Update in future firmware release for camera.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

FujiFilm GFX100

• Interaction with the EVF eye sensor may cause freeze frame or black frames in the recording. – Not using the EVF or tilting the LCD screen can resolve the issue.
– Removal of the EVF from the camera is advised to avoid issue.

• White balance metadata is not reported in Final Cut Pro X.
– Update in future firmware release for camera and Ninja.
– White balance adjustment is not available in Final Cut Pro X.

General

• RAW to HDR HDMI output – PQ / HDR10 output conversion may appear slightly incorrect.

Atomos releases full Ninja V firmware update for recording 5.9K 12-bit ProRes Raw with Panasonic S1H

Atomos has announced the full firmware update for its Ninja V monitor/recorder that enables 5.9K ProRes Raw video capture from a Panasonic S1H.

It’s been just one week since the pre-release beta firmware was released alongside Panasonic’s S1H 2.1 firmware update, but the full version is up and ready to go. The full firmware update enables Ninja V units to record 12-bit ProRes Raw video over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. Also new is a 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode that makes it easier to record footage shot on anamorphic lenses.

To accompany the new recording options, Panasonic has released a new LUT that can be downloaded for free on its website. The Atomos Ninja V firmware update (AtomOS 10.52) can be downloaded from the Ninja V product page, under the ‘Support’ tab.

Simply stunning 12-bit RAW

The Ninja V captures the unprocessed highly detailed 12-bit RAW signal files directly from the full frame sensor of the S1H over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame, or 4K/59.94p in Super35. These unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every detail from the S1H. The resulting ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows.

Anamorphic RAW

More and more cinematographers are now choosing to shoot with anamorphic lenses and the Ninja V and S1H combination caters to them with the new 3.5K Super35 Anamorphic 4:3 RAW mode. An even bigger world of cinematic opportunities opens up as the Ninja V and S1H can now be used as an A-camera or smaller B-camera on an anamorphic RAW production.

Improved color pipeline

LUMIX S1H ProRes RAW files recorded to the Ninja V can now benefit from an improved color pipeline in Apple Final Cut Pro X. Panasonic have published a new LUT based workflow that allows the enhanced potential of ProRes RAW files captured from the LUMIX S1H to be realised in the NLE software.

Ninja V advantage

The Ninja V allows users to accurately monitor the RAW signal on its daylight-viewable 5” 1000nit brightness HDR screen. Setup is simple when the camera is attached with perfectly tuned color settings applied automatically. Users can then view the RAW image accurately in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The Ninja V offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, 1-1 magnification and focus peaking, allowing them to perfect their RAW video. The Ninja V then records the ProRes RAW data onto a removable AtomX SSDmini or other SSD drive. When shooting is complete the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB for immediate offload and editing.

ProRes RAW the new standard

In addition to their ground-breaking combination of flexibility and performance, Apple ProRes RAW files are smaller than other RAW files – simplifying and accelerating file transfer, media management, and archiving. Even with the new higher 5.9K resolution, ProRes RAW files from the S1H can easily be edited on most modern Macs. ProRes RAW is fully supported in Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight and Grass Valley Edius.

This is available immediately; Ninja V users can download the free AtomOS update for their monitor-recorder directly from the Atomos website.

Sony a7S III to get 4K/60p ProRes Raw capture over HDMI with Atomos’ Ninja V monitor/recorder

To coincide with the announcement of Sony’s a7S III, Atomos has announced it will release a firmware update for its Ninja V recorder/monitor that will enable it to record 4K/60p ProRes Raw video over HDMI.

The 16-bit linear Raw video output of the a7S III is sent via HDMI to the Ninja V recorder, which then compresses and records the video as 12-bit ProRes Raw at up to 4K/60p. The Ninja V will also be able to record the a7S III’s 10-bit 4:2:2 HDMI video output as 10-bit 4:2:2 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4K/60p in ProRes or DNx codecs.

Atomos to record 4Kp60 ProRes RAW over HDMI from Sony’s Alpha 7S III

Melbourne, Australia – July 28, 2020 – Atomos are today announcing RAW recording at up to 4Kp60 via HDMI from Sony’s new Alpha 7S III (ILCE-7SM3) full-frame mirrorless camera to the Ninja V HDR monitor-recorder.

The Alpha 7S III has a state-of-the-art CMOS image sensor and the Ninja V can record its full dynamic range in Apple ProRes RAW for maximum detail and latitude in post-production. The RAW files are optimal for HDR finishing, or for greater flexibility in SDR (Rec.709), giving stunning results in either. Images are recorded directly to affordable, reliable AtomX SSDmini or other compatible SSD drives for quick transfer to your editing system.

Unrestricted RAW recording
RAW recording with the Ninja V from the Alpha 7S III is only limited by your imagination. The combination will record ProRes RAW video for as long as you have disk space on your SSD and power for the camera and recorder. The active cooling employed means that internal record time limitations can be bypassed making a perfect setup for performances and long interviews. Optionally, RAW video can also be captured on the Ninja V at the same time as compressed video is recorded internally to memory card on the Alpha 7S III, providing several workflow options and a useful backup

Making low light RAW video a reality
Alpha 7S III low light performance is especially impressive, with the data from the camera’s large photosites making recording RAW in dim conditions a practical option. The Alpha 7S III also has 5-axis optical image stabilisation that is available while shooting RAW video, allowing for amazingly stable and detailed handheld RAW shots.

16-bit Linear RAW perfectly captured as 12-bit Log RAW
The data-rich 16-bit linear RAW output of the Alpha 7S III is compressed and recorded in the Ninja V as 12-bit ProRes RAW at up to 4Kp60. The result is a high quality ProRes RAW file that combines the superb visual quality of the Alpha 7S III with the workflow advantages of RAW and the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. One key benefit, especially in low light, is that the ProRes RAW files allow you to take fine control of how noise reduction and sharpening is applied to images, tuning these precisely for each shot.

A defined standard
Atomos believes ProRes RAW is the new standard for RAW video capture, which is supported by an ever growing number of cameras outputting RAW over HDMI to the Ninja V. The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. Both ProRes RAW, and the higher bandwidth, less compressed ProRes RAW HQ are supported. Manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. 10-bit 4kp60 Apple ProRes or Avid DNx for extended recording
For the first time in a mirrorless camera from Sony there is also a 10-bit 422 HDMI video output option available. The Ninja V and other current Atomos monitor-recorders can record this as 10-bit 422 Log or Rec.709 video at up to 4Kp60 into production ready ProRes or DNx codecs. These provide long record times and practical data rates when the additional flexibility of RAW is not required. This is ideal for situations where the camera needs to integrate into an established post workflow, or a fast turnaround is needed.

HDR monitoring perfection
The accurate 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display of the Ninja V allows users to view the Alpha 7S III RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats or view natively in Sony’s S-Log profile and used with LUTs. The monitor offers touchscreen access to tools like waveform, magnification and peaking so users can check focus and make adjustments to get the perfect HDR or SDR shot.

Launch film from filmmaker Philip Bloom
Renowned filmmaker Philip Bloom has shot a short film titled ‘The Paddleboarder’ to test the ProRes RAW capabilities of the Alpha 7S III with the Ninja V. Shot on the river Thames in just one day it clearly demonstrates just how filmic the RAW images look. In his time with the camera he has also shot ProRes RAW in various lighting conditions including near darkness.

He said: “Sony’s Alpha 7S III is incredibly powerful and does pretty much everything I need from a camera. Having the ability to record RAW over HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V is the icing on the cake. This is especially invaluable when shooting at very high ISO where working with RAW allows me to adjust the noise in post processing with much more precision.”

Atomos announces Shinobi SDI monitor, Shogun 7 monitor/recorder and a Ninja V SDI module

Atomos has been on a roll this past week with the introduction of three new video products ahead of NAB 2019: the Shinobi SDI, Shogun 7 and AtomX SDI module. Below we’ve summarized the news of each product.

Shinobi SDI

The Atomos Shinobi SDI is a new, super-lightweight 5-inch 4K HDR monitor that offers HD-SDI and 4K HDMI connectivity. The monitor features a compact, durable frame that offers a 1000nit display with a pixel density of 427 pixels-per-inch (PPI) behind an anti-reflection, anti-fingerprint screen. The monitor comes factory calibrated with the option to calibrate the screen on-demand.

Atomos says this monitor was built as a means of addressing one of its customers most-demanded products, a stand-alone SDI monitor. The monitor operates on AtomOS 10 and offers a number of features, including focus peaking, 4:1 / 2:1 / 1:1 zoom, customizable zebras, false color, frame guides, broadcast markers and a suite of scope options that include waveform, RGB parade, vector scope and audio level meters.

The Shinobi SDI weighs in at 226g / 7.8oz and is available for pre-order at B&H for $ 499 USD and is expected to ship at the end of April 2019.

Shogun 7

Also new is the Atomos Shogun 7, a new seven-inch HDR monitor, recorder and switcher. The 1,500nit daylight-viewable display features a new 1920 by 1200 panel with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 15+ stops of dynamic range.

Atomos says the ‘screen uses a unique combination of advanced LED and LCD technologies which together offer deeper, better blacks than rival OLED screens, but with the much higher brightness and vivid color performance of top-end LCDs.’

A new 360 zone backlight inside the Shogun 7 is controlled by the Dynamic AtomHDR engine that enables the panel to show ultra-wide color with 105% of the DCI-P3 colorspace covered. Atomos has also teamed up with Dolby to create Dolby Vision HDR ‘live,’ which makes it possible to capture HDR footage on the Shogun 7 and display it on an HDR-capable TV or monitor over HDMI.

On the recording front, the Shogun 7 can record video up to 5.7K / 80p, 4K / 120p or 2K / 240p in RAW/Log or HLG/PQ over SDI/HDMI. Video is stored directly to an AtomX SSDmini or comparable SATA SSD drives. Recording options include Apple ProRes RAW and ProRes, Avid DNx and Adobe CinemaDNG RAW codecs.

The Shogun 7 can also be used with an optional balanced XLR breakout cable that can record up to 12 channels of 24/96 digital audio from HDMI or SDI connections. Monitoring of the audio can be done using the onboard 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Shogun 7 is available for pre-order at B&H for $ 1,499 USD and is expected to ship June 2019.

AtomX SDI module for Ninja V

The third and final product Atomos has announced is the AtomX SDI module for Ninja V. As its name suggests, this add-on module adds the ability to record and output video over 12G-SDI at up to 4K / 60p.

Atomos says it’s been one of the most-requested products from video professionals around the globe. The module is approximately the size of an NP-type battery and attaches to the rear of the Nija V via the modular expansion port. It adds two user-configurable 12G-SDI connections and full-sized 75 Ohm BNC connectors.

Apple ProRes and Avid DNx file formats are used when recording over single or dual-link SDI uses, and shooting is supported in Log, HLG and Rec.709 gammas.

The AtomX SDI module is available for pre-order at B&H for $ 199 and is expected to ship in May 2019.

Atomos Ninja V, Inferno recorders will support 4K 10-bit 422 HDR with Panasonic’s Lumix S1

Atomos has announced its Ninja V and Inferno monitor/recorders will support 4k (3840×2160) 10-bit 422 HDR from the Panasonic Lumix S1 when it starts shipping.

Atomos says recording via HDMI to a Ninja V or Inferno will allow direct recording to Apple ProRes or Avid DNx codecs at up to 4K30 in the HLG HDR format. Using metadata transferred over the HDMI cable, the Atomos recorders can correctly display the HLG signal which provides an instant and accurate HDR image for monitoring purposes.

In Atomos own words, ‘The metadata triggers auto-setup of the Atomos recorders, and the same data is written into the ProRes or DNx file for instant playout to compatible HDR televisions and monitors, or upload to YouTube.

Atomos also addresses Panasonic’s upcoming support for 10-bit 422 HDMI output in V-Log gamma in a future paid firmware update saying the Atomos recorders will be able to record this format and that it’s working hand-in-hand with Panasonic to ensure full support and additional features will be supported when the firmware is launched.

The Atomos Ninja V and Inferno are available from authorized retailers for $ 695 and $ 1,295, respectively.

Recording over HDMI to one of these Atomos recorders will allow recording direct to Apple ProRes or Avid DNx codecs at up to 4kp30 in the HLG HDR format. HDR metadata passed over HDMI from the Panasonic LUMIX S1 to the Ninja V or Inferno allows the HLG signal to be correctly displayed, giving the users an instant and accurate HDR image they can expose and trust. The metadata triggers auto-setup of the Atomos recorders, and the same data is written into the ProRes or DNx file for instant playout to compatible HDR televisions and monitors, or upload to YouTube.

Panasonic will also add 10-bit 422 HDMI output in V-Log gamma via a paid firmware update to the camera in the future. This version of the gamma curve will be the full V-Log, rather than the V-Log L variant found on the GH5 and GH5S. Atomos will record this and are working with Panasonic to fully support the additional options that the upcoming firmware will bring.

The Panasonic LUMIX S1 is the latest in a growing number of large sensor mirrorless cameras to support 4k 10-bit 422 recording via HDMI. The increased image quality brings greater flexibility in post-production for better HDR or SDR images. Stepping up to 10-bit offers greater accuracy with billions of color combinations. This is massively beneficial when utilising computer processing for finishing. Typically, users will see smoother color gradients, eliminating the commonly seen banding in areas with gradual tone change such as blue skies. Recording to an Atomos recorder perfectly preserves this information in the ultimate way possible, combining Panasonic and Atomos technology.

The Panasonic LUMIX S1 has an ergonomic body design that is perfectly partnered with the 5″ Atomos Ninja V HDR monitor/recorder. The Ninja V weighs 360g and sits perfectly on top of the camera. When the two are used together they balance well in the hand, forming an easy to operate camera setup that rivals some traditional cinema cameras.

High bright 1000nit or 1500nit monitoring

Seeing the built-in screen of all mirrorless cameras is difficult in bright conditions. The Ninja V screen has 1000nit of brightness when in SDR mode, allowing it to be used effectively, even when outside. The Ninja Inferno and Shogun Inferno each offer an incredible 1500nit brightness and are well suited to productions where a larger 7” screen is required.

Why external recording makes sense

External recording via HDMI from mirrorless cameras is perfect for users wanting to get the best possible image quality from cameras like the Panasonic LUMIX S1. Until this year users needed to invest in a high-end cinema camera costing ten of thousands of dollars to get a larger than Super35 sized sensor that offered 4K 10-bit 422 recording. Nikon, Atomos team up to offer 4K Raw capture over HDMI to the Ninja V external recorder

Atomos has announced it’s working alongside Nikon to develop PreRes Raw recording with Nikon’s Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras. This marks the first time any mirrorless camera will be able to output 4K Raw video over HDMI to an external recorder, in this case the Atomos Ninja V.

‘Capturing Apple ProRes RAW video with the Ninja V unlocks complete control of the video image at the highest quality possible,’ says Atomos in the press release. ‘The maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and detail is preserved, while at the same time every aspect of the video image can be controlled with precision for maximum creativity.’

Atomos explains the Raw video capture works by streaming Raw data across an HDMI cable to the Ninja V external recorder. That footage is then repacked into the ProRes Raw format and stored to a removable SSD drive inside the Ninja V.

When the SSD drive is full or shooting is completed, the drive is then removed and connected to a computer for post-processing. The resulting footage is decoded (debayered) on the computer, as it’s quite a processor-intensive process, and ready to be edited accordingly.

As previously noted, this is the first time 4K Raw video over HDMI has been seen in a mirrorless camera. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K offers Raw output both internally and over USB Type-C, but not over HDMI.

Atomos and Nikon are currently showing off the new 4K Raw recording feature at CES 2019 (Booth #14006), but there’s no official timeframe on when we’ll see this new capability publicly.

Atomos Ninja V shipping at the end of the month, with new AtomX expansion modules

The Atomos Ninja V external video recorder and monitor will be ready to ship at the end of this month. Announced in April this year, the 5.2in Ninja V is designed to provide a smaller option for those using more compact video cameras while still offering many of the features of the larger 7-inch models.

The recorder can handle 4K 60p footage in 10-bit 4:2:2 over HDMI from the collection of recent cameras capable of producing it – such as the new Nikon Z7/Z6 and Canon EOS R mirrorless bodies as well as Fujifilm’s X-T3 and the existing Panasonic Lumix GH5 and GH5s.

The recorder now comes with options for expansion modules to extend its feature-set. These modules are called AtomX, and the first will be the AtomX Ethernet/NDI that allows the cameras to stream broadcast quality footage and to network with multi-camera set-ups and for the Ninja V to receive NDI data from a range of sources.

The 10-bit mirrorless revolution

Modularity is at the heart of the Ninja V with a bi-directional high-speed expansion port breaking out connectivity for I/O of video, audio and power. Atomos created AtomX to ensure users could adapt and connect to any legacy or future wireless or wired video standard. The expansion system offers endless scalability and is demonstrated by the first of many modules – the AtomX Ethernet/NDI® $ 199 and the AtomX Sync $ 149 announced today. Atomos unveils the Ninja V: A 5.2-inch 4K/60p external monitor and recorder

For filmmakers who want an Atomos external monitor/recorder but feel like the 7-inch Atomos Ninja and Shogun recorders are a bit too big, Atomos has released something just for you. The Atomos Ninja V packs many of the same features into a smaller 5.2-inch form factor that the company says is “perfect for mirrorless cameras, DSLRs and gaming.”

We’re not sure about (and not interested in) the gaming bit, but for video shooters who prefer a DSLR or mirrorless system, a smaller external recorder could be exactly what they’ve been waiting for.

The Ninja V sports a 5.2-inch HDR screen with 1000nits brightness and anti-reflection finish for easy daylight recording, and can record up to 4K/60p 10-bit video over HDMI 2 in either Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR. And since portability is one of its main features, the whole thing is 1-inch (2.5cm) thick and weighs just 11oz (320g).

Feature-wise, you get most of the things you’ve come to expect from an Atomos recorder: histogram, false color, focus peaking, movable 1-1 and 2-1 pixel magnification, waveform, RGB parade, Vector scope, 8 channel audio level meters, and the ability to load creative LUTs, for a start. And the Atom HDR engine promises to show you 10+ stops of dynamic range on the LCD in real time from your camera’s Log/PQ/HLG signals.

Finally, the Atomos Ninja V also features the company’s modular expansion slot, which will allow you to dock “expansion modules” into the battery slot and add advanced features like bi-directional high speed video, audio and continuous power.
