The UK’s largest news agency announces partnership with Sony

The largest national news agency in the United Kingdom and Ireland, PA (formerly known as the Press Association), has announced a deal with Sony to have its photographers shoot with Sony cameras and lenses.

PA was founded 153 years ago, in 1868, and its parent company is PA Media Group Limited. PA Media Group Limited is a private company owned by 26 shareholders that are primarily UK-based newspapers, like the Daily Mail.

PA has over 90 staff photographers and video journalists working in the UK and Ireland, and the process of switching them all over to Sony’s full-frame Alpha mirrorless cameras and Cinema cameras, like the FX3, has begun.

Sony UK writes, ‘With developments in the quality of still and video technology and specifically the introduction of Sony’s full frame silent shutter mode and remote capture it has meant that journalists and photographers have been able to adapt and shoot in situations not possible before – for example silently during broadcast – a key requirement for official engagements, where most recently the Sony Alpha 9 II has been used. Remote shooting is becoming a more common requirement, so being able to control cameras and send images quickly and efficiently to the newswire, is key for success. Along with a close working relationship with the Sony UK Pro team, it is for these reasons that Sony imaging kit was selected as the preferred choice.’

Beyond Sony A9 II and Sony FX3 cameras, additional full-frame cameras will be used. Cameras will be paired with a wide range of Sony E-mount lenses, including several G Master models, like the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS, FE 135mm f/1.8 GM and FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS.

PA members will be receiving their kit personally from Sony, along with product setup support and regular training. After all, some photographers have likely been working with non-Sony equipment for a long time, and there will probably be an adjustment period.

Keene added, ‘It’s a big investment, but the opportunity to have all of our team using the same brand new, state-of-the-art kit is both rare and really worthwhile, and will make a real difference to the quality of the pictures that our customers see.’

This news from the UK and Ireland comes just over a year after The Associated Press announced that it partnered with Sony to exclusively provide its visual journalists with Sony camera gear. The AP’s undertaking was massive, including journalists in more than 250 locations across 100 countries being supplied with Sony cameras, lenses and accessories. Last July, the AP said, ‘A wide variety of Sony’s imaging solutions products will begin delivery immediately, including the full-frame mirrorless Alpha cameras, FS series professional video cameras and an assortment of Sony’s 57 E-mount lenses including G Master models.’

ACDSee has just launched its latest software:

‘Disgraceful propaganda’: Fox News under fire for misleading images from Seattle protest zone

Fox News is taking heat after publishing a digitally altered image and a misleading photograph last week in its reporting on Seattle’s Black Lives Matter protests in Seattle, Washington.

Last Friday, Huffington Post reporter Michael Hobbes shared a set of pictures that shows Fox News clearly composited an image of a person carrying a rifle over two photographs of Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ). While the editing job is far from subtle if you look closely – note the lighting discrepancies between the backgrounds and the gun-wielding subject, as well as the extra area of red between his torso and left elbow – the fact the same individual was used in two separate images makes it clear this was a post-production job.

A Fox News spokesperson provided the following comment to Seattle Times:

‘We have replaced our photo illustration with the clearly delineated images of a gunman and a shattered storefront, both of which were taken this week in Seattle’s autonomous zone’

It appears that there are weapons in the autonomous zone, but as The Seattle Times notes, even Fox News’ follow-up statement is misleading, since the photo of the armed man was taken on June 10th in the Capitol Hill neighborhood while the wrecked storefront image was captured in downtown Seattle, back on May 30th, according to metadata provided by Getty Images.

Photojournalism ethics expert Kenny Irby told Seattle Times in response to the posting of the altered images, ‘I think it’s disgraceful propaganda and terribly misrepresentative of documentary journalism in times like this, when truth-telling and accountability is so important […] There is no attribution. There is no acknowledgment of the montage, and it’s terribly misleading.’ National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) executive director Akili-Casundria Ramsess also told The Seattle Times it was ‘completely egregious to manipulate this the way they have done.’

In a reply to Hobbe’s post on Twitter, Seattle Times Editor Gina Cole responded with a screenshot showing Fox News also shared an article under the headline ‘Seattle helpless as armed guards patrol anarchists’ ‘autonomous zone,’ shake down businesses: cops’ with a photo of an individual running through the streets with a burning car in the foreground and a burning storefront in the background.

However, the image Fox News featured with the article was taken not in Seattle this past week, but two weeks ago, 1,650 miles away in Minneapolis. It was taken by AP photographer John Minchillo, during the Black Lives Matter protests in Minnesota’s capital, as noted by Suki Dardarian, Senior Managing Editor & VP of Minnesota’s Star Tribune. Meanwhile, Seattle’s protests remains largely peaceful, and SPD has apologized for repeating the groundless claim that local businesses had been ‘shaken down’.

In response to the criticism, Fox News took down the images and shared the following statement on Saturday in the form of an Editor’s Note at the end of the article:

‘A FoxNews.com home page photo collage which originally accompanied this story included multiple scenes from Seattle’s ‘Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone’ and of wreckage following recent riots,” the note read. “The collage did not clearly delineate between these images, and has since been replaced. In addition, a recent slideshow depicting scenes from Seattle mistakenly included a picture from St. Paul. Fox News regrets these errors.’

This isn’t the first time Fox News has been caught altering images or sharing misleading images under unrelated headlines. But it’s not the only offender. CBS was caught this past April using video footage of an Italian hospital while reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. CBS apologized at the time for what it called an ‘editing mistake’.

News: When to Expect Sigma’s Full-Frame Foveon Camera

Back in 2018, Sigma announced it would be creating a new kind of camera: an L-mount, full-frame mirrorless body with a Foveon sensor.

In 2019, Sigma gave an update, indicating that the Foveon full-frame body would debut in 2020.

And then, just days ago, Sigma announced that the full-frame Foveon wasn’t even close to production-ready:

As a result of careful and rigorous testing based on the latest development information, however, it has become clear that the launch of such a camera would be infeasible within this year. Still at this point, we cannot say for certain when the full-frame Foveon X3 sensor will be put into mass production.

Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t be seeing the Foveon sensor in a full-frame camera for quite a while, though it’s encouraging that Sigma hasn’t scrapped the project entirely. Of course, only time will tell whether the company meets its end goal of a full-frame Foveon option.

Sigma has created a number of cameras with Foveon technology in the past, including two recent mirrorless bodies that separately feature APS-C and APS-H size sensors (note that APS-H sensors sit between the smaller APS-C and the larger full-frame, 35mm sensors). But Sigma’s only current full-frame digital camera, and only current Sigma full-frame camera to use an L-mount, uses a standard imagining sensor, not the Foveon tech that gets consumers excited.

What is it about the Foveon sensor that’s so special?

To understand this you should also be familiar with standard (Bayer) sensors, which dedicate a single RGB color to each pixel/photosite. Light hits the Bayer sensor, and is filtered into the corresponding photosites: red light enters into red photosites, blue light enters into blue photosites, and green light enters into green photosites.

Then, through a process called demosaicing, the full-sized color image is determined based on the already-existing color data.

Foveon sensors, on the other hand, toss this out the window. Instead of dedicating a single photosite to each color, Foveon sensors capture data for three colors per photosite, resulting in more information captured per pixel and better sharpness overall.

Note that the full-frame Foveon is planned to incorporate the L-mount, and will, therefore, handle L-mount lenses that are produced by Panasonic and Leica, in addition to Sigma’s own L-mount glass.

For now, I recommend keeping an eye out for news regarding Sigma’s new camera. And, if we’re lucky, we’ll have some information before the year is out.

Last week Fujifilm launched its X100V, an update to the popular X100 compact camera lineup. It includes a 23mm f/2 lens, a 26.1 BSI sensor, and fast autofocus for professional-quality images.

It also includes both an electronic viewfinder and an optical viewfinder, which you can toggle between by way of a switch on the camera body. You’re also free to view both the EVF and OVF at once, by working with an electronic viewfinder that appears as part of the optical viewfinder display.

With the X100V launch came a series of promotional videos, including one that featured the work of Tatsuo Suzuki, a street photographer who uses…unusual methods.

The promotional video shows Suzuki approaching people while out in public, then shoving his X100V in their faces in order to capture a photo.

Nearly all of Suzuki’s subjects look uncomfortable with the encounter, with many of them holding up their hands or ducking to the side to avoid his camera.

After this promo video dropped, many viewers became disturbed and angry, which culminated in Fujifilm deleting the video from their YouTube channel.

Note that Fujifilm seems to have done more than just delete the video. Recent reports suggest that the company has removed Suzuki as an ambassador, presumably as a response to protests.

But while some have expressed deep offense at Suzuki’s methods, others find his work impressive or even inspiring.

Many have compared Suzuki to the celebrated American street photographer, Bruce Gilden, who is known for his forceful approach; Gilden’s shooting style involves marching straight up to a subject and shoving a camera, as well as an off-camera flash, in their face.

Which begs the question:

Are Suzuki’s methods acceptable?

On the one hand, Suzuki’s photos are undeniably powerful. His style is intimate and unique.

On the other hand, if Suzuki is causing such discomfort, are the shots really worth the cost? Do the ends justify the means?

There are also other costs to consider. For instance, the more unpleasant experiences the public has with street photographers, the less likely they are to engage with street photographers in the future, potentially ruining opportunities for the rest of the community.

In truth, I find it curious that Fujifilm didn’t recognize this problem with their footage from the beginning. Even if the company doesn’t have a problem with Suzuki’s style of shooting, it was inevitable that not all viewers would appreciate his approach.

Irix produces the 15mm f/2.4 Blackstone lens for three camera mounts: Canon EF, Nikon F, and Pentax K. It’s a fast prime lens that has received raved reviews, which makes it a perfect choice for landscape or architecture photographers looking to add an optically-impressive prime to their bag, not to mention astrophotographers.

The Irix 15mm f/2.4 is a manual focus only lens, which means it isn’t optimal for fast-paced genres such as street photography. But street photographers rarely shoot at ultra-wide focal lengths anyway, and all the photographers that would actually appreciate a 15mm prime probably work in manual focus most of the time.

One more thing you’ll appreciate about the Irix 15mm f/2.4 is the build quality. Irix is unique among lens manufacturers in that it offers two versions of the 15mm f/2.4: A rugged “Blackstone” lens, and a less rugged “Firefly” lens.

News: Inexpensive Canon RF Lenses are in the Works, Including a 50mm f/1.8

Earlier this month, Canon announced its intention to produce RF lenses over EF lenses. A Canon Europe spokesperson indicated that the imaging giant would continue to support the EF mount, but that we can expect to see only new RF lenses for the foreseeable future.

For longtime Canon users who haven’t jumped on the mirrorless bandwagon, this is a blow. But for Canon’s mirrorless users, this is excellent news. One of the main reasons to switch to a company like Sony over Canon is the mirrorless lens lineup; Sony’s mirrorless lens development has had a big head start over Canon’s, and Sony now offers dozens of full-frame and APS-C mirrorless lenses.

But with Canon focusing on its RF lenses, we might get to see it close the mirrorless gap.

In fact, it looks as if Canon is already making good on its commitment to the RF mount, especially in the budget lens category. Up until now, Canon has offered very few cheap RF lens options.

Over the twelve months, we might see that change.

According to Canon Rumors, we can expect to see several new low-priced RF lenses announced in the near future, including “at least one…this year.”

This should include some type of pancake lens with an f/2.8 maximum aperture, as well as the possibility of an RF 50mm f/1.8.

While it’s unlikely that Canon’s 50mm f/1.8 could rival the price of the current EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, its good to know that we might have some strong options for consumers.

Thus far, anyone looking for a 50mm lens option (which is great for shooting portraits, street images, and more) would have to settle for the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L, which currently costs over $ 2000 USD.

But with a cheaper 50mm option, the Canon RF lens lineup should feel much more accessible, even for beginners.

And with some luck, we should see both these new RF lenses before the year is out.

News: The Nikon Yellow Program Lets You Try the Nikon Z 50 for 30 Days

Nikon has started a program called Yellow, which allows potential customers to try the Nikon Z 50.

You can get 30 days of use out of the Z 50. And at the end of the trial period, if you don’t like the camera, you can send it back.

According to Nikon’s website:

We’re so confident that you’ll fall in love with the photos and videos you’ll get with your new mirrorless Z 50 camera, especially when compared to the ones you get with your smartphone, we’ll let you try one at home for 30 days. If you don’t fall in love, send it back to us for a full refund, including shipping.

A neat aspect of the program is that Nikon allows you to choose your kit so that you can trial the Z 50 with a 16-50mm VR lens (for $ 999.95 USD), with the 16-50mm lens and a 50-250mm VR lens (for $ 1199.95 USD), or you can just get the Z 50 (for $ 859.95).

The camera arrives with a charger, a battery, and a memory card, so you’ll have everything you need to start taking photos.

Now, you will have to be careful when trialing the Z 50, because you’re responsible if the camera comes back to Nikon in anything less than like-new condition. Note that Nikon makes you pay upfront, either in full or in installments through PayPal, so you’ll need to be prepared to hand over money in advance.

Really, there’s a lot to like about this program with very little to lose; assuming you take care of your camera equipment, you should have no problem trialing the Z50 without risk.

Of course, the Z50 isn’t a camera for everyone. But it does offer a lot of power in a little, fairly inexpensive camera body: a 20.9-megapixel APS-C sensor, 11 frames-per-second continuous shooting, 4K video, and much more. News: The Nikon D6 Will Be Released in February, With a 24 MP Sensor and Much More

The Nikon D6 has officially been in the pipeline since early September, when Nikon announced the development of its flagship action snapper.

But now we have a rumored release date:

February 12, 2020.

Whether the D6 will actually come out on February 12 isn’t certain (Nikon Rumors notes that this may be the date of an internal Nikon presentation), but it seems highly likely that the camera will be announced in February.

Note that this puts the D6 announcement close to the expected Canon 1D X Mark III release date (which is sometime in the first few months of 2020), and the potential announcement of the Canon EOS Rs (which is also in February of 2020).

While the D6 won’t be competing against any Rs-type camera, the Canon 1D X Mark III will be the D6’s direct competitor, forcing sports and action photographers across the world to make a tough choice between the Canon and Nikon flagships.

We already know that the Canon 1D X Mark III will feature 20 fps continuous shooting in Live View and 16 fps when using the viewfinder. Canon has also promised an upgraded autofocus system that sports enhanced tracking and improved low light AF capabilities.

As for the D6, while nothing official has been announced, we do have some updated specification rumors:

  • Upgraded IBIS from the Z-system
  • Upgraded silent shooting
  • Dual CFExpress card slots
  • 4K video at 60p
  • A 24 MP sensor
  • Enhanced dynamic range
  • Better autofocus, but with the same point count as the Nikon D5 (153 points, 99 cross-type)

While there is no official information on the Canon 1D X Mark III megapixel count, it’s likely that it will be close to 24 MP (and some rumors suggest it could be even higher), so Nikon D6 may not surpass the 1D X series in that area.

But I’m certainly looking forward to learning more about the new Nikon (and Canon) AF system, and equally excited about the continuous shooting speeds on the Nikon D6. Will it be able to match Canon’s 16 fps/20 fps combo? Or could it possibly surpass it?

The Nikon D6 will almost certainly be here soon, hopefully with the features we all want to see!

News: The Canon EOS Rs to Have 75 MP Sensor and Dual Card Slots

Over the past few months, rumors have abounded regarding a “professional” Canon EOS R. But recent news has given us the month of the release, making this new Canon camera more exciting than ever.

As initially reported by Canon Rumors, this Canon mirrorless snapper is about to enter the market, offering a resolution far beyond anything previously offered by Canon.

The Canon EOS Rs (as the folks at Canon Rumors are calling it) will apparently be announced in February of next year, presumably around the same time as the Canon 1D X Mark III and the Nikon D6, though it’ll be aimed at a completely different audience.

So what should we expect from Canon’s pro-level mirrorless model?

The EOS Rs will have plenty of the features you’d expect based on the EOS R, but better:

  • The latest and greatest Canon processor, the DIGIC 9.
  • A “similar” continuous shooting speed to the EOS R (which clocks in at 8 fps in One-Shot AF).
  • An improved EVF.
  • Weather sealing.

But the Canon EOS Rs is also rumored to possess a few traits that should pique the interest of quite a few professional photographers:

  • Dual card slots and a 75 MP sensor.

The dual card slots are somewhat expected, given the slew of complaints that Canon received regarding the lack of dual slots on the EOS R. But a 75 MP sensor is groundbreaking for a 35mm camera, offering a higher pixel count than either the Canon 5DS and 5DSR duo or the Sony A7R IV. It would be, in fact, the highest-resolution 35mm digital camera currently available.

Now, a camera like the EOS Rs is designed with professional photographers in mind. The huge megapixel count is required by, for instance, commercial photographers, as well as those looking to make giant landscape prints.

But while megapixel monsters are undoubtedly powerful, they come with some downsides.

The first is the price; the Canon 5DS debuted at around $ 3700 USD, and I don’t expect Canon to knock many dollars off the EOS Rs MSRP.

The second is file size. The RAW files produced by a 75 MP camera will be huge, which makes storage (both in memory cards and on computers) potentially frustrating.

And third, higher megapixel counts result in smaller pixels. This hurts high ISO performance on even the most professional of cameras, which is one of the reasons why megapixel monsters are often outperformed by other full-frame cameras in low-light scenarios, especially when images are compared at native resolutions.
