AVID Media Composer 2020.4 update moves to 64-bit, delivering support for latest macOS and Mac Pro

AVID has released a new update for AVID Media Composer, its popular video editing software. The new version, AVID Media Composer 2020.4, includes numerous new features, but the biggest one for Mac users is that the software is finally 64-bit.

Apple’s macOS Mojave was the last version of Apple’s operating system to support 32-bit apps. Apple warned software developers for a couple of years that 32-bit apps would no longer be supported with macOS Catalina. As photographers and videographers alike have upgraded to macOS Catalina or purchased new computers such as Apple’s latest Mac Pro which ships with Catalina, they have had to deal with outdated software no longer being supported. Until AVID Media Composer 2020.4, that list of inoperable software included Media Composer.

In addition to being 64-bit, AVID Media Composer 2020.4 also includes a new Universal Media Engine (UME). This new UME speeds up the entire workflow, right from file ingest, by removing reliance on QuickTime. AVID promises that the new UME will be felt via improved performance during importing, playback, editing and exporting files.

Windows users can now create, edit, collaborate on and export Apple ProRes media natively. This includes full encoding and decoding support. However, per Cinema5D, it appears that this may not include support for ProRes RAW files. On AVID’s latest blog post detailing Media Composer 2020.4, there is no mention of ProRes RAW.

The updates in AVID Media Composer 2020.4 are not limited to under-the-hood improvements, the team has also worked on improving the user interface and making the software more efficient. Additions and improvements include a Timeline Sequence Map, which allows for a full view of 128-track sequence, color coding for bin tabs, Titler+ improvements, bulk editing capabilities, multi-select tools, faster sound separation, new 9×16 and 1:1 aspect ratio mask margins, new color space support, additional workspace customization options and much more.

Kenko’s new flash automatically moves its own head for optional bounce lighting

Accessories manufacturer Kenko has introduced a flash unit that automatically rotates and tilts its own head to bounce its output from ceilings and walls to provide the ideal soft lighting. The Kenko AB600-R follows the lead of Canon’s Speedlite 470EX-AI by using motors to move its own head into the ideal position to suit the room and the subject, as well as the orientation of the camera.

The new flash unit measures the distance between itself and the subject, as well as between itself and the bounce surface, and automatically calculates the best angle from which to direct its light. The user can also position the head manually and have the flash unit rotate itself when the camera is turned to be used in a different orientation or at an angle.

Where the Kenko flash differs from the Canon model is that it has a guide number of 60m/197ft at ISO 100 (using the 200mm setting) and it offers radio control for wireless operation as well as optical. In wireless mode the unit can act as a master or slave, and can be controlled additionally via the WTR-1 wireless transceiver.

The zoom head can track focal lengths of between 24mm and 200mm, and with the built-in diffuser lowered it will cover the angle of view of an 18mm lens. First and second curtain triggering options can be set, and strobe and high speed sync modes are also available.

The head is powered by 4 AA batteries, but can also be powered by the BP-1 external battery pack and comes with a two-year guarantee. At the moment it comes with i-TTL compatibility for Nikon users (though B&H is advertising a Canon version – but showing the Nikon one), and costs $ 400 / £400. It is expected in stores in November. Master to slave flash angle remote control – The built-in radio transmitting and receiving unit allows a master flash to control the bounce angle of the slave flash remotely.

Auto and manual zoom adjustment – Light coverage angle equal to the 18-200mm range (18mm achieved when used with the wide diffuser panel). Most campers and other mobile micro-homes come with a built-in problem: they can only be so large and still move easily from one site to the next. Designed by Kodasema, an Estonian collective, this house aims to bridge the gap between conventional domiciles and portable retreats.

The so-called KODA features a lofted bedroom, open-plan living space and requires only a 270-square-foot site for deployment. “When choosing where to live however,” note the architects, “we may take risks. It can be difficult to make major changes to a conventional home as inconvenient and extensive repairs are often involved, or even full demolition and reconstruction.” In short: their solution is efficient, economic and also ecological, optimizing use of time and materials while allowing for flexibility.

“In our minds KODA can become whatever you want – a city-center home, a lakeside summer house, a cosy café, an office, workshop or studio or even a classroom.” Like any home, water, sewer, internet and electrical connections will depend on the site, though it can generate its own power through rooftop solar (and his minimal energy requirements thanks to quadruple-paned glass).

Western Digital acquires SanDisk as more data moves to solid state memory

Hard disk drive giant Western Digital has completed its acquisition of flash manufacturer SanDisk in a deal that will create a partnership that WD hopes will help it leap into the future of computer memory. The company announced plans to buy SanDisk last fall.

Western Digital’s reliance on spinning disk technology in a world that is swiftly moving towards solid state drives has been a cause for concern for the company that currently claims 44% market share for HDDs. Acquiring the world’s largest producer of NAND flash memory should settle some nerves.

Western Digital is said to be interested in cloud storage and computing solutions as PC sales continue to decline, so SanDisk’s know-how in flash data center technologies that provide more capacity in a smaller space, with less heat and faster communication have proven attractive. 

All told, the deal cost Western Digital $ 17 billion in cash and shares, $ 2 billion short of initial estimates. The company expects to be able to make significant savings through economies of scale, expecting combined revenue of almost $ 20 billion with a better position to compete against Samsung and Micron.

Fujifilm XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 OIS WR lens moves from roadmap to reality

Fujifilm has officially announced its Fujinon XF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lens, which has been on the company’s roadmap since early 2015.

This weather-sealed lens, equivalent to 152-609mm (F6.8-8.4 equivalent) when mounted on an X-series body, has nine rounded aperture blades, 5 ED and 1 Super ED elements, and a fluorine coating. It also features a 5-stop image stabilization system and twin linear motors for fast, responsive focusing performance.

The lens is compatible with Fujifilm’s 1.4X teleconverter, giving users an equivalent focal length of 213-853mm.

You’ll be able to pick up the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 lens in February for $ 1899.95.

Fujifilm XF 16mm F1.4 moves from roadmap to retailers

Another lens from Fujifilm’s roadmap is making its way to retailers, and that’s the XF 16mm F1.4 R WR wide prime. This lens, equivalent to 24mm on APS-C, has a nine-blade aperture, flare-reducing Nano-GI coating, and a minimum focusing distance of 15cm/6 in. It’s also sealed against weather and dust and can function at temperatures as low as -10C/+14F. More details

Say Goodbye To Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe Moves To The Cloud)

Unless you haven’t been on your computer at all in the last 24-48 hours, you have probably heard by now that Adobe announced an end to their Creative Suite of products and will now be moving to a subscription only based service. This news was not received well in the photography community on Monday as photographers flocked to social media sites to bash Adobe and voice their opinions. Here are some facts about Adobe’s new move…

  • First, like I mentioned above, Creative Suite will be no more. Gone are the days of walking into a brick and mortar store and purchasing a copy of Photoshop that you can call your own. While you will still be able to buy licensed copies of Adobe Photoshop Elements, any pro-grade version software like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, etc will only be cloud based.
  • As of right now, Adobe Lightroom will still be ‘cloud-free’ and available for purchase as a licensed product. Although I doubt this will last very long as Adobe CEO reported that, “Adobe has no immediate subscription-based plans for Lightroom, but the migration to digital copies is the wave of the future.”

New Pricing Options

Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended used to cost $ 999. On average, Adobe seemed to be on an 18 (some odd) month product cycle between CS updates. This means that if you divide $ 999 by 18 months you come out with $ 55.50 per month.

Going forward (and this has been an option ever since the Creative Cloud became available) you’ll have the option of buying an annual subscription to Photoshop alone for $ 19.99/month or you can have access to the entire lineup of Adobe products (formerly known as the Creative Suite) for $ 49.99/month. And as a bonus, if you are a CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6 customer, you’ll get the entire suite of products for $ 29.99/month for the first year. Adobe used to have an option for if you just wanted to pay month to month without an ‘annual agreement’ but that seems to be gone now. I believe that was $ 29.99 a month. Now you have to make an annual agreement but it’s unclear at this point what that entails.

Let’s Do The Math

So let’s see if this is more expensive, less expensive or a wash. Well, as you’ve already read above, if you used to be a customer who upgraded with each update (ie: always upgraded from CS4 to CS5 to CS6) then you will save money now. You won’t have to shell out a fat stack of Benjamin’s any longer at your local software store. If you pay just the $ 19.99 a month on an annual agreement plan, you will pay $ 359.82 every 18 months. That’s a savings of $ 640.17 according to my calculator. Am I missing something? That’s a savings of 64%…

The entire creative suite (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premier Pro, Muse and more) used to cost $ 2599.99. Divide that by 18 months (again, 18 months is the average amount of time between previous versions of CS) and you get $ 144.44 a month. Compare that to the new $ 49.99 a month and you have a $ 94.45/month savings or (again) about 65% less.

Now, I was never much of a math wiz in school but I’m pretty sure I didn’t screw any of that up.

Did Adobe just decrease their pricing by 65%? It sure seems that way to me. At least if you’re going off an average 18-month product cycle. You do have to take into account that there will be no more Creative Suite. That means Adobe will no longer come out with NEW versions of Photoshop. There won’t be a CS7. They will only add features to Photoshop that will become available the next time you open up Photoshop.

What About Those Who Didn’t Buy Every New Version?

That’s a great point. At $ 19.99 a month, it would take 50 months to come out to $ 999.99 (the cost of the old Photoshop CS6 Extended version). That’s just over 4 years. That’s just under 3 18-month product cycles. Call it two. That means that for those who are still using Photoshop CS4 and haven’t updated to CS6; they are still paying the same amount in the long run but are now getting the advantage of having the latest version of the software, with effortless updates as well as access to Adobe’s new Behance community.

So What’s The Problem!?

I’ll admit…when I heard about all this on Monday I was pissed. I even blogged about it. I’m the kind of guy who likes to save up for things I want and pay cash for them, rather than throw it on a credit card and make payments. I don’t have a car payment. I would never lease a car. So the idea of basically leasing Photoshop on a month-to-month basis doesn’t make me particularly happy. The issue for a lot of people is that the consumer, the customer, no longer has a choice. There are some people out there who just want to buy a product and not worry about their bank account getting drafted every month. It’s one thing to plan for automatic drafts like your gas or electricity, your cable or your car payment. It’s another when you start adding stuff like software programs. It’s just one more thing that could go through at just the wrong time and cause someone to overdraft their account. People like having a choice. With the new system you are giving up your right to actually OWN a product.

Some people are also worried that since Adobe will have reliable/consistent income now with subscriptions that they will lose their competitive edge. They used to have to wow us all with each CS update. New features, new tools, new interface. They had to make us WANT it so we would flock to their website and stores to buy the new programs. If they get us all to sign up for these plans where they already have us, will they stop trying so hard to impress us? Who knows? Will that open the door to some relevant competitors? Who knows? Time will tell.

My Suggestion To Adobe

To be perfectly honest, I’m completely on board with getting rid of the physical copies of Photoshop and all the other Adobe products. When I buy a program like onOne Software’s Perfect Photo Suite, I don’t get anything shipped to my house. I get a license code emailed to me that I plug in once the software is downloaded. Easy peasy. What I think Adobe should do is just make an option available to us where we can rent the software for a full year or even multiple years at a time. And give us a discount for paying in advance. That way it’s pretty much just like it was before. Those of us who prefer this method won’t feel like we are renting a software program. It will be the same as owning it except we won’t have a disk sitting in the bottom of our junk drawer. This, at least to me, sounds very reasonable.

Adobe moves to subscription-only future for Photoshop and other creative tools

Adobe has said it will no longer be developing its Creative Suite range of software, leaving its subscription and cloud-based Creative Cloud as the only way of accessing the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe has been trying to encourage users away from the traditional one-off payment licenses and on to a monthly payment model, with features such as online storage and syncing between devices. This latest move ups the ante by making it the only option for future versions of the software.

This is a list of the most creative and innovative moves of 09′. There is no disrespect meant to anyone not on this list. There were some people we didn’t catch up with this year… hence, the challenge a move option. If you think something you did this year is “top 10” worthy, post it. So now we are at the end of the year and I’m sure everyone would love to see a video culminating all the hard work & memorable moments of 2009….So here it is.
