Funleader’s 18mm F8 ‘cap lens’ gets more lens mount options and is now available to the public

Last October, Funleader started a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds to produce its ridiculously small 18mm F8 pancake lens for Sony E mount and Leica L mount camera systems. As promised in its campaign, it started shipping to global backers in December 2019 and now, nine months later, the lens is available to purchase by the general public in three additional lens mounts.

The pancake lens is constructed of six multi-coated elements in four groups, has a 100º field of view on a full-frame camera and is made of aluminum. The lens measures just 15mm (.59in) and weighs only 80g (2.8oz), making it only marginally larger than the lens cap you probably keep on your camera to keep the mirror and sensor protected.

Funleader designed the lens around its hyperfocal distance, ensuring everything from 80cm (2.6ft) to infinity is in focus at its F8 aperture.

Venus Optics brings its Laowa 9mm T2.9, 12mm T2.9 and 15mm T2.1 cine primes to Canon RF mount

Venus Optics has announced it’s now adding a Canon RF lens mount option for three of its ultra-wide cinema primes: the 9mm T2.9 ‘Zero-D’ lens, 12mm T2.9 ‘Zero-D’ lens and 15mm T2.1 ‘Zero-D.’

The 12mm T2.9 ‘Zero-D’ lens was released back in January of this year, while the 9mm T2.9 and 15mm T2.1 ‘Zero-D’ lenses were announced back in June of this year. At the time, the lenses were only available for Sony E, Canon EF and PL mount, but owners of Canon’s EOS R series mirrorless cameras can now get native versions of the lenses, negating the need to use the EF version with the EF-RF adapter.

As part of the Loawa Zero-D’ line, all three lenses offer ‘close-to-zero’ distortion. All three lenses also feature industry standard 0.8 mod pitch gears for controlling both the aperture and focus.

As a quick refresher, below are specification summaries for each of the lenses:

9mm T2.9 ‘Zero-D’ lens

The 9mm T2.9 is constructed of 15 elements in 10 groups, has a minimum focusing distance of 12cm (4.72”), uses a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and weighs 247g (8.71oz).

12mm T2.9 ‘Zero-D’ lens

The 12mm T2.9 is constructed of 16 elements in 10 groups, has a minimum focusing distance of 18cm (7.09”), uses a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and weighs 675g (1.5lbs).

15mm T2.1 ‘Zero-D’ lens

The 15mm T2.1 is constructed of 12 elements in 9 groups, has a minimum focusing distance of 15cm (5.91”), uses a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and weighs 540g (1.19lbs).

All three lenses are available to purchase with the Canon RF mount starting today on Laowa’s online shop. The 9mm T2.9, 12mm T2.9 and 15mm T2.1 retail for $ 600, $ 1,500 and $ 1,200, respectively.

Tamron announces a compact $549 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 for Sony E mount cameras

Tamron has announced the release of the 70–300mm F4.5–6.3 Di III RXD, a lens deemed as ‘the world’s smallest and lightest telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.’

The lens is constructed of 15 elements in 10 groups, including a low dispersion element for minimizing aberrations. Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s Rapid Extra-Silent Stepping Drive (RXD) motor technology.

Other specifications include an aperture range of F4.5 (at 70mm) to F32 (at 300mm), a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and a minimum focusing distance of 80cm (31.5”) on the wide end and 150cm (59.1”) on the tele end. Tamron says the lens is moisture-resistant thanks to an array of seals in ‘critical locations’ and its compact design measures in at just 14.7cm (5.8”) long, 77mm (3”) diameter and weighs only 545g (19.2oz).

The lens is expected to retail go on sale starting October 29 for $ 549, but Tamron notes the complexities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic could change that date.

Nikon to Announce the 14-24mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.2 for Z Mount

Nikon hasn’t managed to capture much airtime over the past few months, what with the Canon EOS R5 and R6 launch as well as the Sony a7S III announcement.

But Nikon continues to produce top-notch kit, and we’ll see the fruits of the company’s labor later this week, with the official announcement for two new lenses:

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S.

And the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S.

Both lenses are designed for Nikon’s Z mount cameras, which means that they’ll be compatible with Nikon’s mirrorless bodies: the Nikon Z5, Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7, and Nikon Z50.

Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from these two lenses.

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S

This lens will be a Z mount remake of a popular F-mount (DSLR) lens, the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G.

And, if the original lens is anything to go by, the Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S will be an absolute powerhouse.

At the very least, the Z mount 14-24mm will give Nikon users an ultra-wide zoom with an f/2.8 maximum aperture, which will be appreciated by many photographers, including astrophotographers and other low-light shooters. At present, Z mount f/2.8 zooms are limited to the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/2.8; while both of these are excellent lenses, they just don’t offer the perspective that you can get from a 14-24mm lens.

According to Nikon Rumors, the Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 will work with front filters (which is always a concern with ultra-wide lenses), but will also take rear filters. The 14-24mm will be relatively compact, and will feature “smooth and silent autofocus.”

In other words:

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 will likely be a lens that does a lot of things well, from landscapes and astrophotography to those ultra-wide travel and event shots that draw the viewer straight into the scene.

The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S

Nikon already offers a Z mount 50mm lens: the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S.

But the new 50mm f/1.2 S will go beyond the 50mm f/1.8 S; that extra maximum aperture may not seem like much, but it’s critical for low-light shooters of all types, as well as anyone who’s after the best possible bokeh.

That’s why, if you’re a portrait photographer or an event photographer, the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S should be at the top of your wish-list.

While the 50mm f/1.2 S is likely to offer stellar image quality, such a wide maximum aperture comes with a serious price:

The lens is going to be big and hefty. This certainly won’t be your easy-to-carry nifty fifty, so if that’s what you’re after, look elsewhere. But it will be a high-quality, well-built, weather-sealed lens that many professionals are after.

Conclusion

The Nikkor Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S and the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S lenses are bound to be impressive (even if they have a price tag to match!).

So if either lens seemed appealing, I recommend you keep an eye out for Nikon announcements over the next few days.

Vazen announces an $8,000 85mm T2.8 1.8x anamorphic lens for PL, EF mount cameras

Chinese cinema lens manufacturer Vazen has announced the release of their new 85mm T2.8 1.8x Anamorphic lens for PL and EF mount camera systems.

The 85mm T2.8 1.8x Anamorphic lens is the first of a new ‘LF’ lineup designed for large-format cinema cameras, such as the RED Monstro, Alexa LF, Kinefinity Mavo LF and Z-Cam E2-F8.

The lens weighs just 1.5kg (3.3lbs) and measures only 17.5cm (6.9”), making it ‘the world’s lightest and smallest 1.8x anamorphic lens for full-frame cameras.’ It features an 86mm front filter thread, a front diameter of 95mm for mounting matte boxes to, 0.8 mod cine gears for follow focus systems and a minimum focusing distance of 9.6cm (3.8”).

Vazen says the anamorphic lens ‘delivers a buttery smooth oval bokeh, signature blue, but not oversaturated, horizontal flare and the widescreen cinematic look.’ When paired with 4:3 sensors, the lens yields a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Below is a video preview of the lens by Expressway Cinema Rentals:

The lens is currently available to order from the Vazen website and authorized Vazen retailers for $ 8,000. The first units will start shipping out in ‘late August.’

Vazen says it also has two other lenses in the works: a 55mm and a 105mm. These two lenses are expected to be released in ‘late 2020/early 2021’ and will eventually be sold as a three-lens set with the 85mm T2.8 anamorphic lens.

ZY Optics releases ultra-fast 50mm F0.95 ‘Speedmaster’ lens for Canon EF mount

Zhongyi Optics (ZY Optics) has announced the release of its new Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm F0.95 manual lens for Canon EF-mount cameras.

The lens might be similar in specs to its mirrorless counterparts (Canon RF, Nikon Z and Sony FE) released back in 2019, but ZY Optics says the lens has a different optical design featuring 12 elements in 6 groups, including one high-refractive element and five ultra-low dispersion elements.

The lens is constructed of metal, features an eleven-blade aperture diaphragm (F0.95-F16), uses an 82mm front filter thread and has a 65cm (2.13’) minimum focusing distance. It measures in at 89mm (3.5”) diameter and 122mm (4.8”) long, weighing 1.5kg (3.3lbs).

the solution to the elinchrom quadra umbrella mount

When I was looking at reviews of the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra, one of the most common complaints people seemed to have was the fact that they couldn’t mount standard umbrellas on it (Elinchrom uses a 7mm umbrella shaft, while most others in the US use an 8mm shaft).

Now this seemed kind of silly to me – first off, the Quadra head is extremely small and lightweight – hanging anything larger than a *tiny* umbrella off it just seems like a recipe for disaster.   Secondly I thought to myself “I mount umbrellas on speedlights all the time and they have no umbrella holder whatsoever – why is the quadra any different?”  The solution:

The plain ol’ vanilla Umbrella Swivel.  Beloved of “Strobists” everywhere, it provides a secure slot/mount for the umbrella, placing the weight & torque on itself rather than the strobe head.  Screw in a post on top, plop the Quadra head on that and good to go.  You can even still use the angle of the quadra head itself to hit the sweet spot of the umbrella.

Personally this is just fine for me.  works great for my umbrellas, Apollo softboxes and Softliters…but let’s say you need the light more “on axis” with the umbrella shaft (maybe to fit the hole in one of the new PLM diffusion screens for instance…)  I found the easiest thing is to simply take a second swivel, and use it to “hang” the head off the umbrella shaft itself.  The head is light enough that it doesn’t put undue strain on the shaft (or the swivel).

Kinda kludgy but it works.  Personally I don’t bother – mounting it on the swivel itself is quick, easy and gets the job done with hardware that I’m already carrying anyway for my speedlights.

So there you have it:  Mounting umbrellas on the Quadra made easy!

Samyang announces its AF 85mm F1.4 lens is now available for Canon RF mount

Last year, Samyang1 released the AF 85mm F1.4 FE prime lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. Now, the lens has been updated with a Canon RF mount to work with Canon’s line of full-frame mirrorless cameras, too.

Aside from the new mount, the lens remains unchanged from its Sony FE predecessor. The lens is constructed of 11 elements in 8 groups, including one Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) element and four High Refractive Index (HRI) elements to help minimize chromatic aberration. The optical elements also use Samyang’s Ultra Multi Coating (UMC) to keep flares and ghosting under control.

Autofocus is driven by Samyang’s Dual Linear Sonic Motor (DLSM) and the sole button on the lens is the AF/MF button for switching between auto and manual focus. The lens features weather-sealing, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm and a 77mm front filter thread. Below is a sample photo, provided by Samyang:

The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 RF is expected to ship in June for $ 800, with pre-orders opening up before then. The RF version comes in at $ 100 more than the Sony FE version was launched at and $ 200 more than what the Sony FE is currently selling for. Aurora Aperture unveils new rear mount filter system for Canon, Nikon, Sigma & Sony ultra wide-angle lenses

Aurora Aperture Inc. has announced a next-generation rear mount filter system for wide-angle lenses. The new filter system is designed to allow for the use of filters with many popular ultra wide-angle lenses, including those which do not include a front filter thread.

In 2017, Aurora Aperture released a rear mount filter system for the Canon EF 11-24mm F4L USM lens. The newly-announced next-generation system works with the 11-24mm lens, plus the Canon EF 8-15mm F4L Fisheye USM, EF 14mm F2.8L USM (versions I and II), EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye, EF 16-35mm F2.8L USM (versions II and III are not supported), EF 17-35mm F2.8L USM and EF 17-40mm F4L USM. In addition to Canon lenses, Aurora Aperture’s new filter system is also compatible with the Nikon Nikkor AF-S 14-24mm F2.8G ED, Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art (Canon EF, Sony E and L mount versions), Sigma’s 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art for Canon EF mount and the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G lens.

Not only is Aurora’s latest rear mount filter system compatible with a wider array of lenses, but it also includes other new features. The new rear mount filter system utilizes a magnetic quick-release structure, allowing for easier installation and removal from the lens. In addition, there are a variety of new filters available for the system, including graduated neutral density filters and light pollution reduction filters.

Neutral density – Aurora Aperture refers to them as PowerND – filters are available in 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 stop variants. Graduated neutral density (GND) filters are available in 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 stop densities. Each GND filter features a soft transition at 60 percent of the image frame height. Finally, the new PowerDusk filter is designed to filter out artificial lighting and reduce visible light pollution in urban areas, which Aurora Aperture states will allow for better astrophotography and even improved nighttime street photography. In order to utilize the magnetic filters on the rear of your wide-angle lens, you must first install the new rear mount filter system. The installation process will vary depending on the lens in question, but it ranges from using specialty adhesive to replacing existing gel filter holders. Once the filter holder adapter has been installed, using and changing filters is as placing a small glass filter into the magnetic filter holder.

The Aurora Aperture next generation rear mount filters will be available through a Kickstarter campaign starting this month and general availability is expected in September. The price of lens adapters range from $ 35 to $ 41 USD and filter prices range from $ 43 to $ 113.
