iPhone 12 Pro Max review round-up: a meta review of Apple’s largest iPhone 12 model

The embargo has lifted on iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max reviews ahead of their availability this coming Friday. So, just as we did with the iPhone 12 reviews, we’re rounding up and summarizing a number of reviews from across the web as we were unable to get ahold of review units.

For the most part we’ll be focusing on the iPhone 12 Pro Max in this meta-review collection, but some videos and text reviews cover both the iPhone 12 Mini and 12 Pro Max, so you’ll get a little mix of both.

MKBHD

In this video review, Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, shares his thoughts on the new iPhone 12 Pro Max. As you may remember from his iPhone 12 Pro review, he had expected the iPhone 12 Pro Max would perform even better thanks to the camera improvements inside, but much to his surprise, he noticed hardly any difference in image quality, even between the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The Verge

To accompany its comprehensive video review, The Verge has also shared its longform text review titled ’The best smartphone camera you can get.’ In it, The Verge Editor-in-Chief, Nilay Patel, focuses almost entirely on the camera capabilities, praising improvements of the larger sensor, saying the iPhone 12 Pro Max ‘took better, more detailed, and less noisy photos than the Pixel 5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.’

Engadget

In addition to its video review embedded above, Engadget also posted a text review of the iPhone 12 Pro Max titled ‘Better, not just bigger.’ In it, Engadget Senior Editor Chris Velazco praises the larger screen, best-in-class performance and the improved camera system. However, similar to Brownlee’s assessment, Velazco says the better cameras in the iPhone 12 Pro Max ‘aren’t exactly game-changers.’

CNET

Similar to Engadget and The Verge, CNET also published both a video review and text review of the new iPhone 12 Pro Max titled ‘Big phone energy.’ Echoing the sentiments of the other reviews, CNET Senior Associate Editor Patrick Holland says ‘when [comparing the 12 Pro Max’s photos] to photos from the regular 12 Pro, the differences don’t jump out at you right away.’ However, he notes ‘that’s less of a strike against the 12 Pro Max, and more of an indication of how good the cameras are on the iPhone 12 Pro.’

Andy To

For a more real-world example, commercial videographer and YouTuber Andy To used the new iPhone 12 Pro Max to capture his trip back home to Oakland in a cinematic fashion using only video recorded with the device. The five-minute video lacks any narration, simply showcasing what’s possible with the camera array. The whole video was shot on HDR video mode without any external lenses. All footage was shot at 4K/60p or 4K/24p and the footage was edited in Final Cut Pro X.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 review: the best easy-to-use Instax Mini model

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 is a fresh entry-level instant camera from Fujifilm and a refinement of the Instax Mini 9 (there is no Mini 10). As the name suggests the camera makes use of the Instax Mini film format.

Improvements include a new ‘Selfie Mode’ and better auto exposure compared to its predecessor. But unlike its higher-end siblings, the Mini 25/26, Mini 70 and Mini 90, there are no additional creative exposure modes or special features to speak of. That said, the camera is simple to operate and capable of producing lovely images in a variety of lighting conditions.

Operation

The Mini 11 comes with two accessory buttons you can affix to the shutter release via double sided tape (included). I attached the glow in the dark button (shown above).

The Instax Mini 11 is really straightforward to use, making it a great choice for kids. Simply press the button next to the lens to pop it out, switch the camera on and hit the shutter button by the viewfinder to take a photo; there are no other buttons to fumble with. When you’re done, push the lens back into the body to turn it off.

The camera does a have a selfie mode as well as a small selfie mirror on the front of the lens. To engage the mode, pull the very front of the lens outward until the words ‘Selfie on’ appear (see image below); it admittedly took some digging through the instructions to figure this out.

Usability

Selfie mode = engaged.

The camera is, by default, held in the vertical orientation, making it good for portraiture. The viewfinder is a bit small, but that’s par for the course with these Instax Mini format cameras.

In use, I found the shutter button can be easy to bump accidentally, and given the high cost of film, that’s a bummer. Fujifilm does include two accessory shutter releases that affix to the button via double-sided tape – one glows in the dark! Installation is tricky, but once attached, I did find my self less likely to pop off an unintended frame.

Another note about usability: the selfie mode mechanism is a bit hard to engage and feels like it could be a fail point of the camera. It takes a good bit of force to yank the lens forward into selfie mode and retracting the lens after selfie mode has been engaged is a fiddly affair.

Image quality

Image quality from the Mini 11 is good through-and-through. The camera handles balancing ambient light with its flash output with ease, in most shooting scenarios. The addition of variable shutter speeds and slow synchro flash definitely seem to give it more versatility in tricky lighting than Mini 9, which has a fixed shutter speed of 1/60 sec.

When shooting in bright daylight, the inability to turn off the flash from firing can be annoying. There’s also no infinity mode, so shots in which the subject is far away can look a tad soft (see examples in the gallery below).

Like most Instax Mini cameras, the Mini 11 produces its best images in good and moderate lighting conditions with subjects at relatively close distances (within the maximum flash range of 2.7 m / 8.85 ft). Shots in very low light tend to come out darker than desired. This is where some sort of exposure compensation would be useful. The Mini 25/26 and Mini 70, for instance, both offer a ‘High Key’ mode that adds +2/3rds exposure compensation.

I’m tempted to say skip the selfie mode all together. From my testing, a selfie in normal mode seems to produce a better exposure, though focus may be a tad soft. Using the dedicated selfie mode can sometimes result in blown highlights. That being said, I did have some success using the selfie mode for close-up subjects, like the pup shot leading the gallery below (which was shot in a very dark room).

Conclusion

Ultimately, the Instax Mini 11 is for those seeking the easiest-to-use instant camera for the most popular instant film format. The addition of more reliable auto exposure is appreciated. And though I have hesitations about the selfie mode, my guess is most folks who didn’t read the instructions will never even find it. And that’s just fine.

For those desiring something with more creative control, we highly recommend spending a few more bucks and getting the Instax Mini 70, which is more feature-rich and our choice as the best Instax Mini camera, for the most people.

Apple announces new $399 iPhone SE model with 4.7-inch display, A13 chip and Portrait mode

Apple has announced a new version of the iPhone SE, its most affordable iPhone model. The new iPhone SE shares many of the features of the now-discontinued iPhone 8 model, including its glass-backed design and single camera.

Looking first at how the new second-generation iPhone SE compares to the original iPhone SE model, the new model is larger and now includes a 4.7″ HDR-capable Retina HD display rather than the 4″ Retina display of the original. Apple has upgraded its processors numerous times since the original iPhone SE launched with an A9 processor, and the new SE model comes with Apple’s A13 Bionic chip. Apple states that this chip results in 2.4 times faster CPU performance and 4 times faster GPU performance when compared to the A9.

Physically, the iPhone SE is very similar to the iPhone 8’s design. It utilizes a glass and aluminum design and is water-resistant to a depth of a meter for up to 30 minutes. The iPhone SE is 138.4mm (5.45″) tall, 67.3mm (2.65″) wide and has a depth of 7.3mm (0.29″). The phone weighs 148 grams (5.2 ounces).

The True Tone 4.7″ display is LCD and features IPS technology. The resolution is 1334 x 750 pixels at 326 ppi. During typical use, the contrast ratio is 1400:1. The phone can display wide color (P3) and has a maximum brightness of 625 nits.

Despite featuring a single camera, the iPhone SE (2nd generation) includes Apple’s Portrait mode (Night Mode is notably absent). The rear camera is a single 12MP wide camera, the same as the iPhone SE (1st generation), but the new phone has a faster F1.8 aperture compared to F2.2. The F1.8 lens includes six elements and features a sapphire crystal cover. Further, the new model now includes optical image stabilization, True Tone flash with slow sync and next-generation Smart HDR when capturing photos.

The Portrait mode in the new iPhone SE includes advanced bokeh and depth control plus six Portrait Lighting effects: natural, studio, contour, stage, stage mono and high-key mono.

Additional camera features include panorama capture (up to 63MP), wide color capture, Live Photos, red-eye correction, auto stabilization, burst mode, photo geotagging and HEIF format image capture.

For video recording, Apple’s latest iPhone SE model can record 4K video at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps, plus Full HD video 30 fps or 60 fps. The phone can also record with an extended dynamic range for video at up to 30 fps and includes optical image stabilization during recording. Full HD video can be recorded at 120 fps or 240 fps. Users can also record QuickTake video and the phone includes stereo recording. If you want to capture time lapse videos, the iPhone SE can do this as well, including with stabilization. Recording is captured in HEVC and H.264 formats.

The front camera is vastly improved in the 2nd generation iPhone SE. The megapixel count is up to 7MP from 1.2MP and the aperture is slightly faster at F2.2 compared to F2.4. The front camera includes Retina Flash, Auto HDR and can capture Portrait mode images with the same six effects as the rear camera. Further, you can record 1080p video at up to 30 fps using the front-facing camera.

In terms of connectivity, the iPhone SE (2nd generation) is much faster than the older iPhone SE. The phone includes Gigabit-class LTE, 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 with MIMO and Bluetooth 5.0. The new Touch ID should also be faster with the new model. In line with other recent iPhone models, the revised SE forgoes a headphone jack and includes only a Lightning connector.

Users should expect similar battery life as the iPhone 8. This means that the built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery will offer up to 13 hours of video playback and up to 40 hours of audio playback. The iPhone SE is now capable of wireless charging and includes fast charge with an 18W adapter (sold separately).

Despite sharing many similarities with the iPhone 8, the iPhone SE (2nd generation) does have several differences. In terms of processing power, the iPhone 8 utilized an A11 chip rather than the A13 in the new SE. Further, the iPhone 8 did not include Apple’s Portrait mode or Apple’s latest next-generation Smart HDR image capture. Video features are similar between the two phones, but the iPhone 8 did not include extended dynamic range video capture, QuickTake video nor Stereo recording.

The iPhone SE is available in black, white and (PRODUCT)RED colorways. Available storage capacities are 64, 128 and 256GB. This AI that can generate a 3D walking model from a single still image or painting

Researchers with the University of Washington and Facebook have detailed a method using artificial intelligence to animate a person using a single still image. The algorithm is called Photo Wake-Up, and it will be presented at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition on June 19.

The Photo Wake-Up algorithm is given a single still image, such as a photo of a person standing or even an image of a less-than-realistic painting. The system animates the character or person featured in the still image, enabling it to step out of the photo and move forward in 3D space. The hole in the image where the character was located is automatically filled in by the software.

According to the study, the method can create a 3D character from the still image that is capable of walking, running, sitting, and jumping in 3D. The resulting animations can be experienced using augmented reality, enabling artwork in museums to literally walk off the wall, for example.

Despite the input image only providing a single camera position, the resulting 3D model can be viewed from the side and back, as well. The quality varies based on the image; a sample video shared by the researchers shows some 3D models that look more realistic than others.

As has already been demonstrated with AI-based faced generation technologies, it’s likely the quality of this method will improve greatly over coming months and years. The study follows a different method revealed by Samsung in May that can transform a still image of a face into an animated, talking video.

When Do You Need to Obtain a Model or Property Release?

Model and property releases are necessary when you want to use your photographs commercially. This also applies if you plan to upload your photos to a stock agency who will license them for commercial use. These rules apply only to photos that contain recognizable people or material which is copyrighted.

If someone can recognize themselves in a photo, it needs a model release. Even if your photo of a person is a silhouette, it needs a model release for commercial use. Anything showing a company logo, branding, photograph or artwork needs to be accompanied by an appropriate property release if using it commercially.

Release requirements vary from country to country, even from state to state. You need to do due diligence to be sure. This article covers the broader issues of model and property releases and should not be considered in any way as legal advice.

What are model and property releases?

These documents are written, signed agreements between the photographer and the people or property in a photograph.

If you have a photograph of any group of recognizable people you want to upload to a stock photo website to sell commercially, every person in the photo must individually sign a model release.

Photographs of things like cars, storefronts, and even some buttons require the signature of the copyright owner or a property release to use them commercially. There are also many other situations where property releases are required.

France’s famous Eiffel Tower does not require a property release during the day. However, if you photograph this iconic landmark at night, a release to use it commercially is necessary. The lighting design that illuminates the tower at night is subject to copyright. Many other public structures are subject to copyright laws, as are any privately owned buildings. So do your homework before you embark on a commercial photography job.

How can you know if you need a Property Release?

Research is easy these days. Jump online and do a quick, specific search and you will find your answer. It’s best to do this early on in your planning because if a release is required, this will have a significant impact.

Many times you will not be granted a property release. I can’t imagine any company would even pay attention to requests for general releases of their intellectual property.

In some situations, you’ll need permission even to photograph. When you are on public property, in most countries, there are no restrictions on what you can photograph. Restrictions only come into play if you want to publish your photos.

Photographing on private property, and in some public spaces such as museums and galleries, you need to seek consent.

Err on the side of caution. Commercial use of photos containing physical or intellectual property without an appropriate release can be very expensive if you get sued.

Is it difficult to obtain a Model Release?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

When photographing friends, family or hired models, it can be quite easy to get them to sign a model release. Careful communication is essential, and it pays to obtain model releases before you start photographing.

Explain to the people you are going to photograph what you plan to do with the photos and ask if they have any objections. If not, have them sign a release form there and then.

Many people are happy to comply. You can offer them something in return for their services. Many times digital copies of their photos are sufficient. If I am working with models, I always require them to sign a model release prior to commencing the photography session.

Minors cannot sign a release form themselves. If you’re photographing anyone under the age of 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian sign the release for them.

At times when photographing groups of people, I have had one or two who do not wish to sign a release. This is problematic as it limits the whole photo session. I have ended up excluding these people from most of the photos because potential use of them is very limited.

If you frequently photograph the same models, it’s best practice to have them sign a new release form each time you work with them. Having a signed model release that’s months or even a few days old can cause problems. Most stock photo agencies require releases for photos made on different days.

A witness also needs to sign the model release at the time the person you are photographing adds their signature. Improperly filled out release forms will be rejected.

Once I even had a model release rejected by a stock agency because the form was in the wrong language. I had photographed this young woman in Thailand and had her fill out my standard model release form. She is a French citizen living in France. Because the address she gave showed that she lives in Paris, the release form had to be in the French language. Thankfully I was able to email her a copy in French which she signed, had someone witness and sent it back.

Conclusion

Obtaining model and property releases may seem like a big hassle if you are not used to the process. It is a necessary part of being a professional photographer, or even a keen amateur who wants to license photos for commercial usage.

You must be well organized. You need to communicate clearly your intentions and that you require a model release before you begin photographing. Don’t be lax and wait until later – later may be too late.

Property releases are generally much more difficult to come by unless you own the property.

Be bold. If you don’t ask, you won’t get it. Be methodical. Build release acquisition into your workflow. Keep good records, even photograph the person holding their signed release form. Once you have gathered a few signed releases the whole process will seem less daunting.

Portrait lighting can be tricky to learn.

After reading articles and watching tutorials about light, you’ll excitedly look for a person to practice on. Although, once you finally have a person in front of your camera your mind goes blank and nothing is as easy as those tutorials made it seem. You forget all that information you’ve been overloaded with and feel foolish in front of your ‘model.’ Worst case scenario, you’ll become discouraged and give up.

Superman was always my favorite.

But there is a way to practice basic portrait lighting techniques and build your confidence before photographing people. You can practice portrait lighting with toys until you feel comfortable enough to experiment with people.

You’ll learn how to position your subject and light source without the stress of working with a real person.

Once you understand the basic principles of portrait lighting your confidence will grow and you can keep learning new techniques and refining your skills.

Choosing the right toy

Choose a toy with a human figure so that what you learn can transfer easily when you photograph real people. Try to find one with pronounced facial features so that there will be realistic shadows created.

Your toy should have some texture too. This is important because it helps you to see how the light affects your subject. As light skims across a textured surface, it will create highlights and shadows, which will help your portrait to pop. Everybody who sits in front of your camera will be textured (hair, skin, and clothes).

Using a flashlight (hard light source)

Quality of light refers to the hardness or softness of the light.

A general rule is that the smaller the light source, the harder the light will be. This means that there will be deep, crisp shadows. The larger the light source, the softer the light will be. The difference between the shadows and highlights will be much less intense.

I’ll begin by using a flashlight as a hard light source. The basic lighting patterns will be easier to see with hard light.

In each of these sample photos, we’ll focus on the direction of light and what happens as we move the light around.

  • Uplighting

I kept my Superman figure in one place and simply moved the light around it.

The first image is the lighting set up and the second image is the portrait.

The light is placed directly in front of your subject. It’s a little higher than his eye level.

You can see that he is evenly lit with a crisp shadow under his neck created by his jawline.

Rembrandt light

This is a classic lighting pattern named after the painter, Rembrandt. Reposition the light so that it hits your subject on a 45-degree angle. It’s still a little above eye level.

The light has now been positioned directly beside him.

The light now only illuminates one side of him. His face is split between shadow and highlight.

Swing the light around so that it shines over his shoulder.

The only light that we can see now is the edge of his face, shoulder, and arm.

Put the light right behind your subject.

This is similar to the edge light effect except that the light is directly behind him now. If the light source were larger (perhaps a sunset sky) there would be more of a silhouette effect. But the dark background has created a very mysterious look for this low key portrait.

This is the exact same lighting situation except that I increased my ISO to make a brighter exposure.

To achieve this dramatic looking portrait I placed the light at his feet and shone it up toward his face. Uplighting is sometimes referred to as ‘monster lighting.’

Using a window (soft light source)

Now that we’ve seen how light can be used with a harsh source, let’s look at the same techniques with more subtle soft lighting.

In this case, we can’t move our light source, so we’ll have to move the subject in relation to the window.

We’ll cover:

  • Front
  • Rembrandt
  • Side/split
  • Edge
  • Back/silhouette

The window is beside him, but notice that I place him back from the window a bit.

The right side of his face becomes shadowy except for that triangular patch of light under his eye.

I’ve now moved him forward so that the window is directly beside him.

The light splits his face and body into a highlight on one side and shadow on the other.

You can see the window behind him on the left side of the photo. It’s behind him but off to the side so that it illuminates the edge of his head, shoulder, and arm.

Backlight/silhouette

The window is directly behind him. Because it is such a large, bright light source the portrait has become a silhouette.

Creative

Because I wasn’t working with a real person, I felt comfortable experimenting with some creative lighting. The more I relaxed and the longer I practiced, the more I began to notice interesting lighting situations.

The glare on the table acted as a backlight source, creating a silhouette. The light from the window became an edge light source, tracing his upper body and making it stand out from the dark background.

This is the window edge light photo from above. I cropped the window out and used a radial filter in Lightroom to make that subtle burst of warm light in the top left corner of the photo.

Let’s look at a three-step progression from one light to two.

More advanced

The leap from practicing with toys to photographing real people may still be a little uncomfortable, but at least you’ll have some success behind you. Just focus on one thing at a time. Use a window to make a soft Rembrandt light portrait of a friend. Or try a dramatic split light photo using off-camera flash.

7 Tips to Get the Best Out of a Model Shoot

Many photographers want to have a human being in their shot. They may ask friends or family to pose for them or may engage the services of a model, either paid or a TFP (trade for prints) engagement. If you have not spent any time in front of the camera yourself, then understanding the specific challenges of doing the work of a model is difficult.

My advice is to spend some time in front of the camera yourself, either posing for another photographer or doing some form of self-portrait work. This isn’t for you to learn about how to specifically pose a model for certain styles of photography (although this is absolutely necessary) but instead for you to understand what it is like to BE a model.

However, if you don’t opt for that valuable learning experience, take note of these tips instead:

#1 – COMMUNICATE

Most people feel really nervous and uncomfortable in front of a camera. Even an experienced model cannot read your mind and does not know what your intentions are. So before you get started, sit down with the person and talk them through the plans for the shoot.

Explain your concept, share your goals, sketch out how you want the poses to look, and what mood or expressions you are after. One major mistake a lot of photographers make is to treat their model like a living statue, only there to be posed and take direction, and they forget that model is actually a person.

By discussing everything at the beginning, you give the person some structure, context, and understanding of the situation, which helps them be less nervous. It also gives them an opportunity to engage with the process, they may even have ideas of their own which could improve on what you initially had planned.

Making it a cooperative situation builds trust and engagement, lowers barriers, helps relax the model and hopefully give you a better outcome. Constant reassurance and feedback throughout the shoot are also important to keep them motivated.

#2 – COMFORT

Many model shoots often involve the model dressed in clothing that is not always suitable for the environment. When you are standing still in a cold wind wearing a bathing suit, it’s really hard to give off a relaxed summery vibe.

Be aware of the environment and temperature your person is modeling in, make sure they are as comfortable as they can be in the situation. If you have to do a nude shoot, try and do it in a warm heated room instead of outside. It’s really hard to look relaxed when you are cold and shivering.

Discuss your model’s strength and endurance with them in relation to the poses you are doing. Then schedule regular breaks and stick to the schedule. Posing can be quite physically demanding as many poses are quite unnatural to hold for extended lengths of time. Be aware of getting into the zone and shooting for too long and not allowing the model to take a break.

#3 – ENVIRONMENT

As well as the comfort of the model, consider the environment in which you are shooting. Is it inside and private? Is it outside and open to the public? Are they expected to get changed in the back of a car or are there some facilities nearby?

What can you do to make the model feel comfortable in the environment? Would they like some music playing to help get into the right mood? Is there a private space for them to go have a break? Blankets and hot drinks and somewhere to sit down away from the camera?

Perhaps it’s a hot sunny day and they need a break away from the heat and the sun? Have they been standing in front of hot studio lights and been constantly flashed while wearing sky-high heels?

Can they bring along a friend for support and encouragement? Are they able to feel relaxed and engaged and safe while they are working in front of the camera?

#4 – EXPLAIN THE POSE

The way people naturally stand generally looks less than ideal when a shot is taken. Double chins become triple ones, elbows and knees are all awkward, hands on hips or arms crossed in front of the chest, etc., feel comfortable and natural to do, but don’t look so good.

The kinds of things you need to do to your body to get a pose that looks good can be quite uncomfortable to do and hold for long enough to get several shots. The classic “turtleneck” where you push the head forward to get separation at the jawline feels really odd.

So take the time to explain and demonstrate the pose to the person. Give them a chance to experiment and figure out how to get the hang of it. Usually, you will need them to do several things at once – stand in a certain way, tilt the shoulders, put the arms in position, move the head to the right angle, have the hair doing something, etc.


Demonstrate each pose and explain to them why it matters. If you show them the “before” and “after” they will generally understand and be more inclined to make the effort because they can see the difference.

Start with small easy pose setups to allow them to relax and master the basics before going on to the more complicated poses. That is unless you have a really experienced model who is on your wavelength, in which case, go nuts.

#5 – HANDS

Generally, when people are being asked to do something new and difficult, they concentrate on the hard stuff so much that they forget about the unnecessary stuff around the edges. One of those things is their hands, and they can often end up being floppy uninteresting things stuck on the ends of the arms.

Bad hands can completely ruin an otherwise good shot. So pay attention to what their hands are doing, because the model may not know that they need to with them.

#6 – MAKE THEM LOOK GOOD

A lot of fashion photography styles use really artificial poses that look terribly uncomfortable to do. They don’t generally look achievable or attractive to the viewer either, but it appears to be the style of the moment. That might be your desired outcome and I hope you end up with some amazing shots.

However, one of the great things you can do when working with a model is to make them look good in front of the camera in a way they never have before. A lot of that is because people usually don’t know how to pose well in front of a camera. Creating images that make them look good means they then feel good about what is happening.

Being able to offer them some copies they can be proud to show people afterward is an added bonus. #7 – ENGAGE THE EMOTIONS

Using a model as a living breathing mannequin is one way to have a model pose for you. For some types of photography that impassive detached style of posing is desired. However, if you want to truly engage the viewer, having some emotion present in the image is more effective.

Really good models can project a range of different emotions, that is what good professional models do and why they get paid the big bucks. Not everyone gets the option of working with models of that caliber every day, so when working with a less experienced model you may need to coach them around the emotional projection.

Asking your model to try and feel a particular emotion can be a challenge for them to do on top of all the posing you are asking. So this is a more advanced step that you may not always achieve.

Talk them through the concept of the shoot – is it a soft spring morning and they are enjoying a walk on the beach in the sun? Are they a cool crisp corporate executive about to give a high-level presentation? A couple of friends enjoy cocktails and nibbles on a summers evening? Help them get into the right headspace to project a feeling or emotion to fully express the pose they are doing.

Sometimes allowing them to move during the shoot or move into the final desired pose can add an extra level of engagement. Both the body and the brain are fully involved in communicating the external expression of the pose.

To get someone to stand still and look fantastic while doing it, allowing you to take an amazing photo actually requires a lot of work behind the scenes first. When working with a model, remembering that they are a living breathing person is important, they are not just a thing that’s there for you to manipulate into the desired position.

Taking care of your model, providing them with an environment and a situation where they can relax and be comfortable while working in front of the camera is important. Someone who is happy and enjoying their modeling experience is far more likely to provide you with great photos, than someone cold, stiff, miserable and uncomfortable (unless that is the look you are after).

Help them be a good model. Communicate, listen to their feedback, support them and you should both reap the benefits with some memorable images and hopefully a fun experience as well.

DJI Mavic 2 drones leak with Zoom and Pro model variants

DJI will release two variants of its upcoming Mavic 2 drone, according to a leaked product listing. The Mavic 2, which hasn’t been officially announced, appeared in a catalog issued by UK retailer Argos, which lists two model variants: the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom.

The catalog listing, which was shared on Twitter by Brett Thake, describes the DJI Mavic 2 as a small drone with a 45mph / 72kph top speed, 31-minute max flight time, omni-directional obstacle sensing with APAS and Active Track 2.0, and an 8km / 5-mile transmission range, including 1080p video transmission. The Mavic 2 Pro is described as having a 1-inch CMOS Hasselblad camera, while the Mavic 2 Zoom variant advertises a 24-48mm equiv. 2x optical zoom.

DJI confirmed the leak in a statement to CNET, explaining that catalog was preprinted and scheduled before July 18, the date DJI originally planned to launch the Mavic 2

Assuming the catalog details are correct, this represents a significant upgrade from the original Mavic Pro and Pro Platinum. In particular, a 1-inch CMOS sensor should deliver significantly better performance than the 1/2.3″ sensor found in the earlier models, and has been one of the most frequently requested features from users.

Additionally, The Verge is reporting that users will be able to switch lenses on the camera.

The new models will also see an increase in flight time from 27 minutes to 31 minutes, as well as a top speed increase from 40mph to 45mph. Pricing information was not leaked by the catalog, but it does feature a partial image of the two drone variants.

DJI confirmed the leak in a statement to CNET, explaining that catalog was preprinted and scheduled before July 18, the date DJI originally planned to launch the Mavic 2. The event was ultimately postponed, but Argos apparently didn’t get the memo, proceeding with publication of the catalog including the Mavic 2 details. We’ve reached out to DJI for a statement and will update this article with any new information.

“This early look just hints at the many exciting features and capabilities DJI will announce at the proper time,” the company said in its statement.

Apple’s 2018 iPad 9.7″ is the first entry-level model with Pencil support

During its event on March 27, Apple introduced its new sixth-generation iPad, a 9.7″ model with a starting price of $ 329. The new iPad is the first non-Pro model to support Apple Pencil, the maker’s own stylus. Despite its low price, the new iPad features a Retina display A10 Fusion chip, and support for augmented reality experiences.

This is the first entry-level iPad to support the $ 99 Apple Pencil, a stylus that makes it possible to write, draw and edit images. The iPad runs iOS 11, the latest version of iOS that brings major updates to Apple’s mobile operating system. As with the iPad Pro devices, the new iPad features iOS 11’s Dock, which is similar to the dock found on macOS. Other 6th-gen iPad 9.7 features include an aluminum unibody construction, support for Apple SIM, advanced sensors array for motion tracking and AR apps and both front- and rear-facing cameras.

Apple is offering its new iPad in Silver, Space Grey and Gold color options with 32GB (starting at $ 329) and 128GB (starting at $ 429) of storage. Apple Pencil is sold separately. Apple provides a comparison chart helping potential buyers contrast the new iPad’s features with existing iPad models.
