Casio launches intense-looking GZE-1 action cam that’s waterproof to 50 meters

Casio just announced an action camera that it claims is drop-, water- and freeze-proof, and comes with a 13mm f/2.8 equivalent lens. It’s called the GZE-1, and it’s the first of a new line of Gz EYE models that are aimed at extreme sports enthusiasts.

The camera is said to use G-Shock technology borrowed from the Casio’s sports watch brand, and can be controlled either by a Casio Pro Trek watch, a smart phone or the dedicated (and optional) remote controllers, one of which has a LCD screen that allows users to see the action live. The camera itself doesn’t have a viewing screen.

Despite having a 21.14-million-pixel 1/2.3-type backlit CMOS sensor, the GZE-1 turns out only 6.9MP still images and FullHD video. It can, however, record frame rates of up to 240fps, and allows users to vary the frame rate during a clip to mix slow-motion with normal motion in the same sequence. This allows action moments to be shown in slow-motion without users having to record the whole sequence at a high frame rate, or having to combined multiple clips of different speeds in post-processing.

Three-axis electronic image stabilization helps to keep movie footage smooth (though it does nothing for stills) and over-sized buttons make the camera easy to control with gloves on. A resin body coating and a urethane bumper helps the camera withstand drops from 4 meters, high pressure blasts from waves, and water in general to depths of up to 50 meters. The body is also IP 6X dust-proof and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C.

No price has been released yet but the Casio GZE-1 is due to go on sale at the end of the month in Japan… we’re still waiting to see if it becomes available elsewhere in the world.

No Quarter: Parking Meters Pimped To Perfection

It’s time to pay tribute to parking meters, those metal “trees” of the concrete jungle that have collected billions of coins over eight decades of service.

Parking meters have been fixtures of the urban street scene since the first of 150 “Black Maria” meters was installed on the corner of First Street and Robinson Avenue in Oklahoma City exactly 82 years ago today. The so-called “curbstone parking automats” (see photo caption above) were quickly embraced by retailers who watched their sales increase as day-long street parkers vacated choice parking spaces in favor of actual shoppers.

Space reserved for Jayne Mansfield? OK, that was in poor taste but still – Flickr member Lulu Vision thought this “only in S.F. moment” was worth capturing and we must agree. Parking meters have evolved over the decades but they don’t get much respect. Even so, you don’t have to be one of those “that cloud looks like Elvis” types to see the winking blonde plying her trade on the streets of San Francisco.

Wait, so putting wigs on parking meters is a thing now? Flickr member Tofu (tofuart) snapped the black-wigged meter above in September of 2013 while strolling along South of Market, San Francisc… aha, now we get it: wigging out the parking meters is a ‘Frisco thing. Whew!

Don’t Be Carless, Help The Homeless

The turnover from analog to digital parking meters left many municipalities with hundreds of obsolete meters. What to do? Well, if you’re the city of Montreal you re-install those meters with a new purpose: collecting donations to support the homeless.

Dubbed “ParcoDon” and instituted in 2007, the program saw 70 obsolete parking meters dolled-up and decorated by local celebrities and organizations. The artwork helped members of the public discern the difference between an actual parking meter and a ParcoDon meter, with roughly $ 23,000 being collected over the program’s first three years.

Never mind the irony of meters once used to charge drivers to park now helping to support citizens who can’t afford a home, much less a car. Oh hey, looks like the idea’s catching on – the images above hail from Miami, Florida and Pasadena, California, respectively.

LenzO underwater housing for iPhone 7 is rated for 100 meters

Sure, your iPhone 7 Plus can probably stand up to a little water, but if you’d like to dive deep you might not want to press your luck. That’s why ValsTech is seeking funding for a new LenzO underwater housing designed for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. As with the iPhone 6/6s version, the iPhone 7 housing is rated for depths down to 100m / 328ft, and features an optical dome lens, total phone control while under water, a selfie lens, and dual tripod mounts. Unlike the previous LenzO housing, though, the iPhone 7 variety is also buoyant.

LenzO is designed for recording videos and snapping photos underwater, and includes different color correction filters to compensation for various bodies of water. The case has a wake/sleep button for the phone, a camera start/stop trigger, swing arm actuators and a secure seal latch.

The underwater housing doesn’t require any special camera apps. Users can easily toggle between photo, video, panorama, and slow-mo modes while using the housing.

ValsTech is offering Kickstarter backers one LenzO for iPhone 7 housing for pledges of at least $ 230. The planned retail price will be about $ 400. Shipments to backers are estimated to start this upcoming April, and will be available globally.

Branco Ottico creates world’s biggest contact print at 24 square meters

Do you lie awake at night wondering how big the world’s largest contact print is? Wonder no more. It turns out Branco Ottico, an Italian photography group, created the largest contact print in the world during Phototrace Florence in September 2015. The project involved a 24 square meter (about 258 square feet) photo negative stitched onto an equally large sheet of canvas, and enlisted the help of strangers who placed their hands on the print for the nearly 13-minute exposure.

Their efforts resulted in a successful – and massive – cyanotype print. According to the group’s website, the print now holds a Guinness World Record. The whole process has been documented in the newly published video below. Additional photos of the project are available on the group’s Instagram.

Smog-Sucking Tower Cleans 30,000 Cubic Meters of Air Per Hour

Successfully crowdfunded last year, the Smog Free Tower has just gone from concept to reality; these machines are now using green energy to create zones of smog-free space in public places in Rotterdam.

Daan Roosegaarde’s Smog Free Project may not be a complete solution to urban air pollution, but it can at least carve out breathable spaces in key city spaces like downtown squares and public parks.

Each 20-foot tower is lightweight and elegantly designed, running on about the same amount of electricity used by a water boiler (1,400 watts). Their low-energy ionization technology also powers LEDs that light the structures up at night.

The device sucks smog in from above then using a small positive current to charge ions, which in turn attach to fine dust particles.

The particulates processed by the tower are to be compressed and turned into jewelry including rings and cuff links, or packed into transparent cubes, available to crowdfunding backers and others who wish to support the project as it continues to expand and grow.

New towers are planned for cities in particularly urgent need around the world, including Beijing, Paris, Mexico City and Los Angeles. As a solution to environmental issues in cities, this may only be a first step, but at least it can provide some relief – a breath of fresh air for smog-weary citizens.

Lighting Tutorial: Types Of Lights & Meters

Hey FashionPhotographyBlog.com readers! Welcome back.

Now that you know different sources of lights that can be used, today we’ll cover the ways in which they can be set up.

TYPES OF LIGHTS

“Key” light is the main light source and generally the brightest.

“Fill” is used to brighten shadows and does bit create a secondary shadow and is generally a diffused source. (Avoid a secondary shadow at all costs! This is the sign of an amateur photographer.)

“Background” lights are used to illuminate the background and aid in separating the subject. They can provide a sense of depth.

“Hair” light is typically overhead and slightly behind a subject. It’s a separation light which only hits the top of the head.

“Kickers” are lights that help separate the subject from the background. Kickers are also known as “Accent,” “Rim” and “Edge” lights.

No Kicker vs. Kicker – This is a more obvious example. Kickers can be use more subtlety.

“Rim” lights are pretty self explanatory. They hit the rim of the subject to serve as a separator from the background.

TYPES OF METERS

Reflective Meters are the types of meters build right into your camera. How do they work? Reflective meters measure the light that is reflected back into them. These types of meters take an average reading of the scene and meter for “middle grey.” Be aware of this when using the meter built into your camera (or a reflective meter) to meter a scene!

Experiment: Using a reflective meter, take a photograph of a black card, take a photograph of a white card and take a photograph of a grey card. You’ll notice that all the images essentially come out grey- the black will be over exposed and the white will be under exposed.

Incident Meters are the type professionals typically use. They’re handheld meters which are held at the subject (not at the camera, like reflective meters) and measure the amount of light that falls on to the subject. These are much more accurate than reflective meters and are easiest to use in studio.

They also come with an attachment to use it as a reflective meter.

100 Cubic Meters: Split-Level Urban Micro-Condo in Madrid

Good home design is not just about a perfect product but about process and context, as illustrated in this case through diagrams, videos and photos of how to make a small space work on multiple levels in Madris, Spain (both physically and proverbially).

MYCC (images by Elena Almagro) managed to fit in a full bathroom, living room, kitchen, bedroom and office into this curiously-shaped urban shelter, narrow yet also relatively deep and tall (approximately: 2 meters wide, 10 meters long and 5 meters high).

A minimal combination of stairs and ladders connect the different platforms within the resulting studio, set out of the way and rendered partially transparent (staircase sans risers) or set off to the side (ladder along the wall) to help leave open lines of sight between various rooms.

A large skylight directly illuminates the work space, and, indirectly, the rest of the unit as well. The lack of horizontal space limited opportunities for plan-level complexity, but opened up spatial options in section as the dimensional diagram outline shows below.

A quirky animated video takes viewers on a short tour of the conceptual design process, starting with the entry level then splitting off to show how the various floors, nooks and crannies took shape.

Luxi turns smartphones into incident light meters

Luxi is a diffusion dome accessory that aims to turns your smartphone into an affordable incident light meter. The accessory is currently gaining traction via a Kickstarter campaign, is designed to work as an incident light meter by measuring the light for an entire scene, rather than just reflected light.
