Mobile by Peak Design is a new line of smartphone cases and accessories with unique ‘SlimLock’ design

Peak Design is back with its latest crowdfunding campaign. This time, the San Francisco-based accessory manufacturer has found a way to put a unique spin on a new line of cases and accessories for smartphones.

The legs of the tripod accessory fold out wide to create a sturdy base. If you’re using larger, heavier devices, the case even has a built-in hex tool for tightening the joints of the ball mount and legs.

The new Mobile by Peak Design lineup consists of smartphone cases and universal mounts that use Peak Design’s ‘SlimLink’ hardware to easily connect an ecosystem of accessories, including an ultra-compact tripod, various magnetic and locking mounts, a wallet and even wireless charging mounts.

The tripod accessory is tapered and easily snaps into place on the rear of the case or universal mount.

What makes the SlimLink connection on each of the cases and adapters unique is its ability to work with both hard-locking (mechanical) and soft-locking (magnetic) mounts. This means some of the accessories, such as the mobile tripod, can connect with a quick snap of the built-in magnets, while mounts that need a more secure hold, such as the bike and moto mounts, can lock into place for a more secure hold.

The SlimLink connection is made of ceramic-zirconium, meaning it will still allow Qi charging to work through the case. At launch, the Mobile by Peak Design lineup will offer dedicated Peak Design Everyday Cases for the following devices (other phones will work using the universal adapter):

  • iPhone 12 (6.1” + 5.4”), Pro Max, Pro
  • iPhone SE2
  • iPhone 11, Pro, Pro Max
  • Samsung S20, S20 Ultra, S20 +
The universal mount ensures nearly any older device—even those with cases—should be able to be adapted to work with the Mobile by Peak Design system.

Peak Design is also supporting cross-compatibility between its mounting system and the new MagSafe connection found in Apple’s latest iPhone 12 devices. Specifically, Peak Design says its soft-locking mounts and accessories (tripod, wallet, charging stand, wall mount and car mounts) will work with Apple’s MagSafe phones and cases. Peak Design also says iPhone 12 devices in the Peak Design Everyday Case will work with Apple’s MagSafe charger and notes Apple’s MagSafe accessories, such as their wallet, will be able to be connected to a Peak Design Case, but it doesn’t specify how exactly that will be achieved.

As of the announcement of the Kickstarter campaign, Peak Design lists four different cases or adapters and eleven different accessories. An infographic overview of the ecosystem is shared below:

This is Peak Design’s 10th Kickstarter campaign and should, if it reaches its goal, ensure Peak Design surpasses smartwatch manufacturer Pebble for the all-time most money raised through Kickstarter campaigns — $ 43.4M.

After a successful funding and launch on Kickstarter, the Mobile by Peak Design system will be available to purchased through Peak Design’s online shops as well as partnered retailers in Spring 2021.

DJI updates Ronin line: RS 2, RSC 2 3-axis gimbals with higher payloads, new shooting modes and more

DJI has revealed a new pair of gimbals that are successors to the company’s popular Ronin-S and Ronin-SC stabilization systems. The new DJI RS 2 and RSC 2 are ‘redesigned and reimagined’ three-axis handheld gimbals for filmmakers of all types.

The DJI RS 2 is the successor to the Ronin-S and is made to be used with DSLR and compact cinema camera setups up to 4.5kg (10lbs). Despite the heavy payload, DJI claims the new RS 2 features up to 12 hours of battery life, as well as a new quick-charge function built into the handle for quickly adding two hours of use with just 15 minutes of charging.

DJI is using its ‘newly optimized’ Titan Stabilization Algorithm for driving the onboard brushless motors, which it claims ‘reduces the need for manual user input while compensating for user movement and optimizing the gimbal tilt and angle.’ Also new is a SuperSmooth mode that’s specifically tuned to compensate for movement when using longer focal lengths up to 100mm.

Like its predecessor, the RS 2 features axis locks for secure transport and a new dual-layer mounting plate that’s compatible with both Arca-Swiss and Manfrotto standards.

A new 1.4” color touchscreen on the rear of the RS 2 serves as a way to cycle through settings, camera data or even a live feed from the camera. Two onboard RSA ports can double as NATO ports, enabling the RS 2 to be used in conjunction with other DJI and third-party accessories, including jibs, car attachments, sliders, grips and remote controllers.

Just as the the DJI RS 2 is a successor to the Ronin-S, the RSC 2 is a successor to DJI’s Ronin-SC. The updated gimbal is constructed of steel and aluminum, which work to increase rigidity while reducing the overall weight of the unit compared to the Ronin-SC by 35%. It also has a smaller physical footprint with a folded size of 180mm x 190mm (7” x 7.5”) — roughly the size of an A5 sheet of paper.

Despite the reduction in both size and weight, the RSC 2 features an increased maximum payload of 3kg (6.6lbs) over the Ronin-SC. DJI notes this makes it more than strong enough to carry a combination such as the Panasonic S1H with a 24–70mm lens attached.

It too features DJI’s improved Titan Stabilization Algorithm, dual-plate mount system and OLED screen, albeit slightly smaller at just 1”.

Other features and accessories

In addition to new hardware, both the RS 2 and RSC 2 have received a new pre-programmed movement mode — Time Tunnel. This new option is an inception-esque mode that performs a 360º roll while capturing a hyperlapse. This mode is in addition to other pre-programmed modes such as Flashlight, One-Tap Portrait Mode, Panorama, Roll 360, Timelapse and more.

Ronin RSC 2

The two gimbals also include an array of accessories for building out the gimbals to fit your needs. Optional accessories include a cheese plate, Focus Wheel, 3D Focus System, Twist Grip Dual Handle, RavenEye Image Transmission System, Tethered Control Handle, counterweight systems and more.

The DJI RS 2 is available starting today for $ 849 USD as a standalone unit and $ 999 in its Pro Combo configuration. DJI RS 2: Masterfully Crafted

Considering a tremendous amount of feedback from professional operators, DJI RS 2 incorporates carbon fiber in vital structural components, reducing weight down to 1.3 kg (2.86 lbs) while remaining highly durable. Pushing the innovation of single-handed gimbal technology even further, DJI RS 2 now supports a tested dynamic payload of 4.5 kg (10 lbs) for creators to use heavier camera and lens combinations while still achieving up to 12 hours of battery life. A new quick-charge function directly to the battery handle has been added for urgent situations, providing an extra two hours of battery life with just a 15-minute charge.

DJI RSC 2: Filmmaking Unfolds

Additionally, the folding design provides creative ways to use the gimbal such as vertical filming without additional accessories, as well as a new Briefcase mode, where the main gimbal arm can be loosened and slung forward to provide unique shooting angles. Fujifilm to improve X-T3 AF performance with new firmware, bringing it more in line with X-T4

In addition to announcing a camera, lens and more, Fujifilm has also revealed it will soon release a free firmware update for its X-T3 that will improve autofocus performance and more.

The firmware update will go live on October 28, according to Fujifilm’s press release. The improvements should see autofocus speeds more than double, taking focus times drop from 0.06 seconds to 0.02 seconds, bringing the X-T3’s autofocus performance more in line with the X-T4.

Fujifilm says it’s also improved the algorithm for predicting subject movements, which should result in a >90% ‘hit rate.’ The Face Tracking and Eye AF algorithm has also been re-written to double the tracking performance in continuous shooting modes.

Other improvements include the ability to use AF in low light levels down to -7EV with the new Fujinon XF 50mm F1.0 R WR lens, a new ‘Focus Limiter’ feature for setting pre-determined focus ranges, the ability to change the size of Single AF points while recording video and improvements that make it possible for third-party programs to read the ratings applied to pictures in-camera.

Cosina announces new VM-mount Voigtlander Nokton Vintage Line 50mm F1.5 Aspherical II VM lens

Cosina has announced (translated) the release of its new Voigtlander Nokton Vintage Line 50mm F1.5 Aspherical II VM lens, an updated version of its predecessor, which was released back in June 2013.

The second-generation lens features an entirely redesigned optics system and a more compact body to match. It’s constructed of eight elements in seven groups, has an aperture range of F1.5-F16, uses a 12-blade aperture diaphragm and has a minimum focusing distance of 70cm (27.5”). The lens measures in at just 55mm (2.17”) diameter and 37mm (1.5”) in length.

The lens is constructed almost entirely of metal, with knurled rings for manually adjusting both the aperture and focus. Interestingly, Cosina is offering the lens in two different versions: a multi-coating version (MC) and a single-coating version (SC). In its own words, Cosina says the MC version ‘aims to reproduce colors as neutral as possible’ while the single coating ‘reproduces classical colors.’

Cosina is offering the lens in black and silver versions constructed of aluminum, while a more premium model constructed of nickel-plated and black-painted brass is also available.

All versions of the Voigtlander Nokton Vintage Line 50mm F1.5 Aspherical II VM lens use a bayonet VM mount that can be used with Vessa and M-mount cameras (not including the Bessa L and R). The Japan launch date is October 22 for all models and pricing is listed at ¥100,000 (~$ 950) for the aluminum models and ¥115,000 (~$ 1,100) for the brass model. Currently, no information on availability outside of Japan is mentioned.

Moment unveils CineBloom, its new line of cinematic diffusion filters

Photography accessory company Moment has released CineBloom, its new lineup of diffusion filters meant to ‘take the edge’ off your digital photos.

Inspired by cinema, the new CineBloom filters can be used with both stills and video, and ‘capture dreamy, film-like vibes straight out of a camera,’ not unlike the ‘Pro-Mist’ diffusion filters Tiffen produces.

The filters are constructed of ‘aerospace grade aluminum’ and ‘Japanese optical glass’ and come in seven sizes: 37mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm and 82mm. They’re available in two densities — 10% and 20% — so you can choose exactly how much diffusion you’d like. Moment has designed the filters in such a way that they can also be paired with the company’s variable neutral density filters for further creative control right in camera.

The filters are available for purchase through Moment’s online store. Prices start at $ 50 for the 37mm filter and go up to $ 80 for the 82mm filter; the density you choose doesn’t affect the price.

Sony to Announce New Line of Compact Cameras Next Week

Sony’s is famous for its full-frame mirrorless lineup, which offers stellar image quality, lightning-fast autofocus, and more.

Sony is also famous for its APS-C mirrorless lineup, which offers similarly fast autofocus but in a compact package.

Yet Sony is about to take their mirrorless system a step further.

Earlier this week, Sony unveiled this graphic on their Sony Japan website:

And while the announcement hasn’t officially been followed by additional details, Sony Alpha Rumors has reported that Sony will be announcing a brand-new type of mirrorless camera, one that combines the compactness of the Sony a6000 series with the image quality of the a7 and a9 series.

According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the first of these cameras will be labeled the Sony a7C, where the ‘C’ will likely stand for either Concept or Compact.

So what can we expect from this new mirrorless body?

  • The a7 III’s 24 MP sensor
  • A fully-articulating screen in the style of the a7S III
  • Autofocus from the a7S III
  • A design close to that of the Sony a6600 (though a hair larger)
  • 4K/30p video recording capabilities
  • In-body image stabilization
  • One SD card slot
  • A headphone jack as well as a mic input
  • A higher price tag than the a7 III (which currently sits around $ 2000 USD)

Sony Alpha Rumors also reports that the a7C “will be marketed for vloggers and YouTubers,” and will debut alongside a new set of compact lenses.

If all this information is accurate (and I suspect that it is!), we’re going to be in for quite a treat. The a7C will offer some of Sony’s best goods, and future a7C cameras should be similarly impressive.

Really, this camera seems like a powerful hybrid; while it may be aimed at YouTubers and vloggers, it should also appeal to travel photographers, street photographers, and even more casual, walkaround photographers.

Plus, the new compact lens lineup will hopefully address a common frustration among Sony mirrorless photographers: that the cameras are compact, but the lenses aren’t.

Samsung reported to be expanding its image sensor production line

According to Business Korea, Samsung is planning to convert one of its current DRAM manufacturing lines into a camera sensor production line to the tune of roughly $ 815M.

The report says Samsung will be converting its DRAM line 13 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea into a camera sensor production unit. This transition isn’t unprecedented, as Samsung did the same back in 2018 with its DRAM line 11, converting it into the camera sensor production line S4.

This transition from DRAM production to camera sensor production happens because, as noted by Android Headline, approximately 80% of the manufacturing processes and equipment for the two operations overlap. so, rather than build from scratch, Samsung can save a dramatic sum of money by simply converting an existing production line.

Despite so much overlap between the two processes, the conversion is set to cost one trillion Korean won (?), which is roughly $ 815M dollars at the current exchange rate.

Business Korea doesn’t note what kind of sensors the converted production line will manufacture, but Samsung recently showed off its new 50MP ISOCELL GN1 sensor and has also teased the development of both a 150MP sensor and a 250MP sensor, with hopes to someday create a 600MP smartphone sensor.

Android Headline cites ‘industry experts,’ saying mass production on the converted line could start as early as year’s end, ‘once it completes installing and testing the new equipment.’

NVIDIA’s new GeForce RTX Super GPUs join forces with Intel’s 10th generation H-series CPUs in RTX Studio laptop line

NVIDIA has announced the arrival of ten ‘Studio’ laptops announced that use Intel’s newly-released 10th generation H-series mobile processors. The NVIDIA RTX Studio-branded laptops include the company’s newest GeForce RTX Super GPUs. The RTX Studio notebooks come from Acer, Gigabyte, MSI and Razer, with new RTX Studio laptops from HP to be announced in the coming weeks.

All the announced RTX Studio laptops include NVIDIA’s flagship RTX 2080 Super Max-Q GPU and Intel’s 10th generation H-series mobile processors. Each Studio laptop is designed and catered to creatives, and thus include features important to creative enthusiasts and professionals. For example, the Acer ConceptD 7 Ezel and ConceptD 7 Ezel Pro laptops have built-in Wacom pen support and include color-accurate touchscreen displays. The MSI Creator and Razer Blade 15 Studio display 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, which is important for videographers. It is worth noting that some RTX Studio notebooks include 100 percent coverage of the Adobe RGB color space as well.

In total, 10 new RTX Studio systems were announced today. They each focus on different features, but all cater to creative applications. The Acer ConceptD Ezel 7 and ConceptD Ezel 7 Pro feature Acer’s Ezel design allowing flexibility in usage and have Wacom pen support. The Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED and 17 HDR machines include 4K OLED displays and display 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. MSI’s Creator 15 and Creator 17 notebooks have 4K IPS displays and can display 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color space. The Razer Blade 15 models have a striking aluminum unibody design and 4K OLED displays.

Moment launches new line of variable ND filters for DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and drones

Moment has announced the launch of its first variable ND filters for cameras and drones. The company is offering a total of four variable ND filter products at this time, one designed for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone. According to the company’s website, it designed its new filters to ‘hit the sweet spot on affordability, functionality, and quality.’

The Moment variable ND filters are made with machined aerospace-grade aluminum and Schott B270 Pro Cinema Glass. The three products designed for use with cameras utilize ‘unique geometry and laser-etched graphics’ that enable photographers to view the stop using the viewfinder. As well, the camera filters feature a design that prevents cross-polarization when rotating the filter.

In addition to the camera filters, Moment has also launched a filter for drones, specifically the Mavic 2 Pro. According to the company, this is the first cinema-grade variable ND filter for the Mavic 2 Pro. Offered in 2-5 Stop and 6-9 Stop varieties, this product is made from fused silica glass coated for ‘cinematic color and rugged durability.’ As with the camera filters, these drone filters are designed to prevent cross-polarization.

All four new variable ND filter products are available from Moment now. The Mavic 2 Pro Cine Variable ND filters are priced at $ 80 each; the camera filters are available in 67mm, 77mm and 82mm sizes for $ 150, $ 160 and $ 170, respectively.

Confirmed: Venus Optics working on new line of ultra-fast ‘Argus’ F0.95 lenses

Update (11:30 EST, January 20): Venus Optics has confirmed to DPReview that it’s working on not just one, but multiple F0.95 lenses. A Venus Optics spokesperson says Venus Optics does ‘not have further information about these lenses’ at this time and concluded their statement saying ‘As usual, we are just trying to create something unique, good quality and affordable for photographers.’ The headline of this article has been changed to reflect this confirmation.


According to a report from FujiAddict, Venus Optics, manufacturer of the Laowa lens brand, is working on a new ultra-fast F0.95 lens for DSLR and mirrorless full-frame and APS-C camera systems.

FujiAddict’s report, which says the lens will be denoted by the ‘Argus’ moniker, is substantiated by an image posted to Chinese social media platform Weibo that claims to show a frame from a presentation that simply shows the words ‘Laowa F0.95.’ At this time, no information is given regarding the focal length or specific mounts this purported lens will be available for. However, FujiAddict claims ‘Many are speculating it will be wide and my contact says they expect it to be between 20–35mm.’

As noted in the report, Venus Optics isn’t the first third-party lens manufacturer to create an ultra-fast prime lens. In addition to the legendary Leica Noctilux F0.95 lens, SLR Magic has a slew of ‘HyperPrime’ lenses for both still and cinema photography.
