Lexar launches $50 USB Type-C CFexpress card reader with speeds up to 1,050MB/s

06 Jun

Lexar has announced its upcoming Lexar Professional CFexpress USB 3.1 Reader, a budget-friendly CFexpress card reader that offers impressive speeds in a compact package.

The Lexar Professional CFexpress USB 3.1 Reader is based on the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface and can deliver read speeds up to 1,050MB/s through its CFexpress Type B card slot. It measures in at roughly 5.6cm x 4.7cm x 1.3cm (1.1” x 1.5” x .14”), weighs just 21g (0.74oz) and can operate between -10°C to 70°C (14°F to 158°F) if you really feel like putting it to the test.

Despite having a USB Type-C host port on the reader, Lexar opted to only include a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable within the box. So, if you’re wanting a USB Type-C to USB Type-C connection, you’ll need to supply your own cable.

The good news is, this omission likely plays a role in the affordability of this card reader. The Lexar Professional CFexpress USB 3.1 Reader is currently available to pre-order for just $ 50 (Adorama, B&H). At this time, it appears to be the cheapest CFexpress card reader from major brands, including SanDisk ($ 70), Sony ($ 100), ProGrade ($ 100), Delkin ($ 55) and even Wise ($ 59).

Lexar is showing off a PCIe 4.0 SSD with 7GB/s read sequential speeds

31 Dec

According to technology publication Where Consumers Come First (Wccf), storage manufacturer Lexar is working on a prototype PCIe 4.0 SSD that’s capable of achieving sequential read speeds up to 7GB/s.

Wccf doesn’t share too many details about this prototype SSD, but does say the M.2 PCI-Express 4.0 SSD drive, which uses a 96-layer TLC-NAND, was able to hit ‘6442 MB/s in sequential reads and 4246 MB/s in sequential writes’ using CrystalDiskMark and IOMeter benchmarking programs.

These speeds far surpass the speeds currently found in most PCI-e 4.0 SSDs, which tend to max out with read and write speeds of 5GB/s and 4GB/s, respectively. The drive is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0 slots, but in order to get the maximum speeds, the drive requires a CPU that supports PCIe 4.0. Currently, only AMD Ryzen processors offer PCIe Gen 4 support, so Intel processors, which only offer PCIe 3.0 support at this time, will be limited to the maximum speed of the PCIe 3.0 slots.

According to Wccf, the SSD ‘is planned to be available in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities.’

Lexar announces ‘the world’s largest’ A2 microSD card

01 Nov

Longsys has announced the world’s largest A2 microSD card under the Lexar brand name.

The impending 512GB Lexar High-Performance 633x microSDXC UHS-I card meets the Application Performance Class 2 (A2) requirements, meaning it has a minimum write speed of 2000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) and a minimum read speed of 4000 IOPS. In the case of this particular Class 10 card with a V30 rating, that means it can read up to 100MB per second and write up to 70MB per second.

This particular card is designed more for smartphones and tablets, but can also be used in various action cameras and drones that use microSD cards for storage. Based on the speed, this particular card should handle 4K/30 video and 1080p/120 video without any hassle.

Lexar says the card has been tested in the “Lexar Quality Labs with more than 1,100 digital devices, to ensure performance, quality, compatibility, and reliability.” It claims an operating temperature range of 0°C/32°F to 70°C/158°F, storage temperature range of -25°C/-13°F to 85°C/185°F, and a humidity range of 5-95 percent.

Lexar said the card is expected to hit shelves by the end of October for an MSRP of $ 299.99, and has the card up on its website, but the 512GB version isn’t yet available from any retailers.

Lexar confirms XQD development being “held up by multiple parties,” focusing on CFexpress

29 Oct

Last week, Nikon Rumors reported Lexar will no longer make any XQD cards, citing a press release from Polish Lexar distributor My Adventure. DPReview has since independently confirmed this report with Lexar.

“While Lexar is eager to pursue the XQD technology, the product availability of XQD has been held up by multiple parties including Sony (who owns the IP) which has prevented us from moving forward,” said a Lexar spokesperson to DPReview. “In addition, we are diligently working on the future standard of CFexpress through our efforts in the Compact Flash Association and partnerships with key camera manufacturers.”

The move echoes ProGrade Digital, a memory card brand founded by former executives of Lexar, who recently said it too will skip developing XQD cards in favor of CFexpress.

The Lexar brand makes a return

17 Aug

The Lexar brand was one of the victims of consolidation in the market for memory solutions when parent company Micron pulled the plug in June 2017, announcing it was going to discontinue the brand. A couple of months later Chinese flash memory giant Longsys acquired the Lexar trademark and branding rights but we have not seen any new Lexar product announcements or other market activity since then.

Now we have some news, however. Longsys has announced that Lexar will be back “in full production” and shipping globally this fall.

In a statement Huabo Cai, CEO of Lexar said

“I’m extremely excited to re-introduce the Lexar brand to our worldwide customers. Lexar is dynamic, has superior research and development capabilities, and has a deep understanding of our customer’s needs. At the same time, we are confident that we can expand the Lexar business successfully in different markets globally.”

“For more than twenty years of innovative development, Lexar has been a world-renowned brand in the field of flash memory and trusted by bringing unparalleled storage experience and creating unequivocal value for business users and consumers.”

At this point there is no further detail as to whether the brand will maintain the complete past product line-up which included memory cards, card readers, solid state drives (SSDs) and USB flash drives.

However, the company says Lexar products are now shipping to retailers globally. Lexar will also be exhibiting at this year’s Photokina trade show in Cologne at the end of September, so hopefully more detail on products will be available by then.

Lexar responds to rumors: will continue making XQD memory cards

01 Nov

Almost 2 weeks ago, Nikon Rumors reported that B&H Photo had discontinued Lexar’s line of XQD cards. In light of Lexar’s recent acquisition by Chinese flash storage manufacturer Longsys, people assumed the worst—for once, they shouldn’t have.

Yesterday, Lexar responded directly to Nikon Rumors on Twitter, assuring the publication (and everyone else) that the it will continue producing XQD cards, which are currently used by some high-end Nikon DSLRs like the Nikon D5 and Nikon D850. Here’s the response in full:

Exactly what Lexar’s future looks like, we still can’t say. Longsys has been quiet except to say that “the innovative solutions and excellent support that they have experienced from Lexar will continue.” For now, that apparently extends to XQD cards.

The new owner promises that “the solutions and support they have come to expect from Lexar branded products will continue to be available.”

News of the acquisition broke yesterday on the Longsys website, and according to tech site Tom’s Hardware it’s a boon for both brands. Longsys has told the site “on a number of occasions about its desire to enter the U.S. market,” and Lexar was in need of a savior.

“We are very honored to acquire the Lexar brand,” Longsys CEO of Electronics Limited, Huabo Cai, said in a statement. “Lexar has built a great brand name and our vision is to make it even greater. Existing customers can rest assured that the innovative solutions and excellent support that they have experienced from Lexar will continue.

According to Cai, Longsys’ mission in acquiring the Lexar brand is to make it “the go-to brand for high-performance removable storage,” expanding on the brand’s offering with “even more compelling solutions as the age of wireless an big-data impact the consumer storage markets.”

Neither Micron nor Lonsys have shared any financial details about the acquisition, but for now, it sounds like Lexar will not only continue to exist… it’s about to start growing in a big way.
