Leica’s Noctilux-M 50mm F1.2 is an homage to one of its most iconic lenses

The last Leica Noctilux 50mm F1.2 lens was produced 46 years ago. Now, nearly half-a-century later, the iconic lens has been reborn in the form of the Noctilux-M 50mm F1.2 ASPH, a ‘new’ lens from Leica that pays homage to a classic.

The original Noctilux 50mm F1.2 lens was the first to feature aspherical elements in its optical design. This, along with its large maximum aperture, made for a unique aesthetic that’s become synonymous with the Noctilux line. Leica says the original lens’ ‘visual signature embodies the original essence of the “Leica look” and has helped shape the landscape of Leica’s iconic reputation for the best lenses.’

So, rather than go back to the drawing board, Leica stood atop its own shoulders and based the new lens so similarly to its predecessor that Leica says the resulting images are ‘nearly identical.’ Despite that, Leica says ‘the purpose of this lens is by no means limited to nostalgia or trips down memory lane,’ going on to say that when ‘stopped down to F2.8 or further, the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH delivers impeccably sharp images that live up to the quality expectations of modern-day digital photography.’

The lens is constructed of six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements. It features a 16-blade aperture diaphragm, has a 1m (3.3ft) minimum focusing distance and uses a 49mm front filter thread. The lens measures 61mm (2.4″) in diameter, 52mm (2″) long (without lens hood) and weighs 405g (14.3oz).

This lens marks the third in the Leica Classics Range, which has seen reissues of the Summaron-M 28 f/5.6 of 1955 and the Thambar-M 90 f/2.2 of 1935. To further pay homage to Leica’s lens history, the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH will come in both silver and black versions — a nod to Leica’s transition from silver to black anodized lenses over the years.

The silver chrome edition of the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH ‘features a brass lens barrel, a front-ring engraving that reads LEITZ WETZLAR (distinguished from the contemporary LEICA engraving) and along with the clear lens container is packaged in a vintage-inspired box that even further recreates the 1966 original.’ The silver chrome edition is limited to just 100 units worldwide and will retail for $ 16,395.

The black anodized version of the Noctilux-M 50 f/1.2 ASPH will come in packaging ‘inspired by the box of the original [Noctilux].’ Leica doesn’t specify how many of the black anodized versions it will be making, but it doesn’t appear to be a limited edition. Units are available now through Leica Stores and authorized dealers for $ 7,695.

Leica’s FOTOS app is now free for all after the $50/year ‘Pro’ subscription was removed

Last month, Leica quietly announced in the changelog of the version 2.2.0 update of its FOTOS mobile app that it was making all ‘FOTOS PRO’ features available for free to all users.

Previously, FOTOS was free to download, but held most of its premium functionality behind a $ 50 per year subscription plan. Now, in addition to being able to wirelessly capture, transfer, organize, edit and share images, anyone with FOTOS app can also make full use of the iPad version of the app, use the Adobe Lightroom integration (open the image in Lightroom Mobile’s develop module), transfer Raw images and use live view for video capture — all things previously hidden behind the $ 70 subscription.

While $ 50 in comparison to the cost of a new Leica might not be much, having access to these features without having to spend any additional money is a nice change of pace if you own one of the compatible Leica cameras:

Spot the differences: Comparing a $430 35mm F1.4 7Artisans lens to Leica’s $5,895 Summilux-M

It’s well known that better optics ultimately yields better images, as higher-quality glass and components affect how the light hits the image sensor inside your camera. But just how much does cheaper glass differ from expensive glass? We’d like to think it differs quite a bit, but a recent comparison from Leica Rumors shows just how close a cheap lens can be to an incredibly expensive lens — one nearly 14X the cost.

In the blind comparison, Leica Rumors put the Leica Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH lens ($ 5,895) up against the 7Artisans 35mm F1.4 lens ($ 430). All images were shot on a Fujifilm GFX 50R, using the exact same settings. We’ve embedded the images from Leica Rumor’s Flickr account down below, presenting them in the same order Leica Rumors has on its website. You can carefully view and even download the full-resolution images from Flickr to look at more carefully. Following the images, we’ll share what photos were shot on what lens, so don’t scroll down too soon if you want to spoil the surprise.

While this is a rather extreme comparison that is by no means scientific nor representative of the build quality or manufacturing conditions of either lens, it goes to show just how far optics, even budget optics, have come over the years. Ultimately, the best choice is the one that fits your need.

Leica’s 40 Megapixel M10-R is its highest resolution rangefinder yet

Leica has introduced the M10-R, the highest resolution member of its M10-series yet. The M10-R’s 40 Megapixel sensor is largely the same as the one in the M10 Monochrom, with the main difference being (naturally) that it has a Bayer color filter. Leica claims that the new sensor offers a wider dynamic range in Raw mode and less noise than previous M10 bodies.

Like the Monochrom and the M10-P, the ‘R’ has the quietest shutter of any M-series camera (film bodies included).

The M10-R features a 3″ fixed touchscreen with 1.04 million dots, which can be used for live view and reviewing images. It has a single SD card slot (UHS-I only) and Wi-Fi, but not Bluetooth. As with its siblings, the M10-R does not have a USB or HDMI port. As always with Leica cameras, it’s made in Germany and build quality is exceptional.

The M10-R will go on sale later this month, in your choice of black or silver, for $ 8295.

Leica’s SL2 gets 187MP ‘Multishot’ mode with a new 2.0 firmware update

Leica has released firmware version 2.0 for its SL2 full-frame mirrorless camera bringing with it the much-anticipated ‘Multishot’ mode amongst other features and fixes.

When it was first revealed last November, Leica said its SL2 full-frame L-mount camera would eventually be able to capture 187MP images via a Multishot mode that would appear in a firmware update sometime in 2020. Now, the new feature is here and ready to be put to the test.

When set to Multishot mode the SL2 will combine up to eight images to create a DNG file up to 187MP. To achieve this, the sensor is shifted in half-pixel increments between each of the exposures.

Due to the Multishot mode using sensor-shifting to capture the high-res images, Multishot mode is limited to electronic shutter capture and automatically turns off image stabilization (both BIS and OIS). In addition to the final 187MP image, the SL2 will also save an image at normal resolution (47MP).

Other improvements in firmware version 2.0 include an updated video menu interface, the ability to change the size of the autofocus field using a long tap and a new setting that will automatically rename formatted SD cards to ‘Leica SL2.’ Leica has also addressed a number of bugs including better detection of M lenses when used with an adapter, a fix for artifacts in DNG files when shooting in ‘Continous — Very High Speed’ mode, a fix for the incorrect focus distance values and updates to wireless connectivity that should provide a faster and more stable connection between the camera and connected mobile or desktop devices.

Leica’s 64MP S3 medium-format camera is now available to pre-order for $18,995

Almost a year and a half after first teasing it, Leica has announced its S3 medium-format camera is now available to pre-order.

The Leica S3 was originally set for a Spring 2019 release when we first had a hands-on at Photokina 2018, but it was continually delayed for unspecified reasons. Now, it’s alive and well, ready to pre-order for those who have deep wallets.

At the heart of the relatively compact Leica S3 is a 64MP (45 x 30mm) Leica ProFormat CMOS medium-format sensor that features a 2:3 ratio, up to 15 stops of dynamic range and a sensitivity range of ISO 100–50,000. It can capture up to three still frames per second and records DCI 4K (4096 x 2160 pixel) 4:2:2 8-bit internal video at 24 frames per second using the full width of the sensor. All of this is powered by Leica’s Maestro II processor, which offers 2GB buffer memory.

In addition to a Live View mode with a refresh rate up to 60 fps, the S3 also features an optical viewfinder with 0.87x magnification and approximately 98-percent coverage.

The outside of the camera remains largely unchanged from its predecessor, the Leica S (Typ 007), and looks similar to the more recent Leica SL. The back of the camera features a 3” LCD with four programmable buttons, arranged with two on each side.

Also similar to the Leica S (Typ 007) is the S3’s two shutters that can be controlled with a switch on the rear of the camera. The ‘FPS’ mode stands for focal plane shutter, while the ‘CS’ mode stands for center shutter (leaf shutter), which will work with compatible S-Lenses. In our hands-on, the leaf shutter, which has a maximum shutter speed of 1/1000s, did sound noticeably quieter than the focal plane shutter.

As was expected, the Leica S3 doesn’t come cheap. The body-only version is available to pre-order for $ 18,995 (Adorama, B&H), with the first units expected to ship at the end of March 2020.

Leica’s M10 Monochrom is a discreet black and white rangefinder

Leica has introduced its latest dedicated black and white rangefinder camera, the M10 Monochrom. It uses a new 40MP sensor that Leica says was ‘designed from the ground up’ to handle black and white photography. The new sensor has lowered the base ISO from 320 to 160, and Leica also claims an improvement in dynamic range.

To go along with its black and white pictures, Leica has removed any hint of color on the camera body. The neutral gray body has no red Leica badge or any scripting on top, giving it a stealthy appearance. The body is just as thin as the other M10 models and has the ISO dial they introduced. It also has the same silent shutter and touchscreen display as the M10-P. Photos can be transmitted via Wi-Fi and Leica’s Fotos app.

The M10 Monochrom is now available for $ 8295.

Why Leica’s M10 Monochrom is more than just a gimmick

The M10 Monochrom is Leica’s third mono-only digital rangefinder, but the lower base ISO of the latest camera extends its flexibility.

The Leica M10 Monochrom is the company’s third mono-only rangefinder. It uses an entirely new 40MP sensor, rather than borrowing the 24MP chip from the other M10 models.

We think the Bayer filter array is an amazing creation, producing results that massively outweigh its drawbacks, but there are a few reasons why going without color filters is more than just a gimmick.

Higher detail capture

The obvious benefit of a monochrome sensor is that you don’t need to demosaic: each pixel you capture becomes one pixel in your final image. You don’t need to interpolate missing color values for each pixel, so you don’t need to call on neighboring pixels, so don’t experience the slight blurring effect that this has.

The final image will be inherently sharper than most color cameras can achieve (Foveon sensors being the key exception to this).

Higher base ISO

The color filters used on most sensors absorb around 1EV of the light, since each filter has to absorb the two colors it’s not allowing to pass through to the sensor (the green filter absorbs the red and blue light, for instance).

The M10 Monochrom’s base ISO of 160 is lower than previous mono cameras but higher than a camera with a color filter array would be.

This means that the silicon of a monochrome sensor receives around one stop more light at any given exposure. The consequence is that it becomes saturated and clips highlights around one stop earlier, at its lowest amplification setting. The result is that its base ISO tends to be rated one stop higher than a chip with a CFA would be. On the M10 Monochrom, the base ISO is given as 160 (rather than 320 on previous models).

This can be challenging, since it means having to use exposures that are 1EV lower than you’d expect on a color camera. In bright light, this is likely to mean stopping down when you hit the M10’s 1/4000th sec maximum shutter speed. But it’s worth noting that there isn’t any image quality cost to this.

Better tonal quality, ISO for ISO

Usually, reducing exposure by 1EV results in photon shot noise being one stop more visible (this reduction in light capture is the main cause of high ISO images looking noisier).

But, although the M10 Monochrom’s base ISO of 160 means using an exposure that’s half as bright as the ISO 80 exposure you’d expect to need on a color version, the Monochrom’s sensor still experiences the same amount of light: there’s no filter stealing half of it.

The tonal quality of this ISO 12500 shot is likely to be more comparable to that of an ISO 6400 shots on a color camera, since the sensor will be seeing the same amount of light, despite a darker exposure. The dynamic range is likely to be similar, too, since less amplification will have been applied.

In other words, you’ll get the same tonal quality as a color camera shot at 1EV lower ISO. And, while the higher base ISO presents an exposure challenge in bright light, it means you get tonal quality that’s a stop better in low-light situations.

And that’s before you consider the fact that all noise will present as luminance noise, rather than the chroma noise that most people find more objectionable. So you get a one stop improvement in noise in low light and the noise that is present is less visually distracting, which means less need to apply detail-degrading noise reduction.

New sensor

The big unknown with the M10 Monochrom is the specific sensor performance. We’ve not seen a 40MP full-frame sensor before, so can’t yet be sure what its performance will be like. The 24MP sensor used in the existing M10 models is pretty good, but slightly underperforms the standard set by the 24MP sensor in cameras such as the Nikon D750, meaning it’s even further behind the newer chip used by the likes of Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma and Sony.

We can’t yet be sure how Leica has managed to reduce the base ISO, compared to the previous model. An ISO of 160 is very low for a Mono camera, since it would equate to around ISO 80 if a color filter array was applied. So it’ll be interesting to assess the dynamic range, when the camera becomes available.

We won’t know how well the M10 Monochrom’s sensor performs until we get a chance to go out and shoot with it. Probably out in one of the classic sports cars Leica seems to expect us to have.

All Leica has said is that the chip in the M10 Monochrom has been ‘designed from the ground up with Mono in mind,’ which we’re a little skeptical about. It’s true that we’ve not seen this 40MP chip elsewhere, but it’s hard to imagine that (even at Leica prices), the M10 Monochrom will ever generate enough money to cover the cost of the development of a dedicated chip.

What is true, though, is that the smaller pixels of a 40MP sensor will make it less prone to aliasing than a 24MP sensor would be, since higher resolution sensors can accurately portray higher frequency detail, before getting overwhelmed and rendering an alias, rather than a correct representation. That said, simply being a monochrome sensor massively reduces the risk of aliasing (Bayer sensors sample red and blue at 1/4 their full pixel count, so can produce color aliasing with relatively low frequency detail).

Beyond the technical

It feels a bit strange writing about the technical advantages of a Leica rangefinder, since that’s not historically been an area in which they’ve excelled, and probably isn’t high on the list of why anyone buys one.

Of course, we’re DPReview, so we’re always going to consider the technical aspects of camera performance. But we recognize that a monochrome camera is about more than this. If you go out knowing that every photo has to be black and white, you look at the world in a different way: you start to concentrate on compositions of light and shade, not just compelling color or the warmth of the light. It’s a different way of thinking.

Which is to say: we’re really looking forward to getting a chance to go shooting with the M10 Monochrom.

Meet Leica’s newest limited-edition camera, the ‘White’ M10-P

German camera manufacturer Leica has announced a new limited edition M10-P camera that will be almost entirely white and silver, aside from the iconic red dot, of course. The ‘White’ edition will feature white leather trim and white paint on the top- and base-plates, as well as white lettering in the shutter speed and ISO dials.

The camera will come in a kit with a silver chrome Summilux-M 50mm F1.4 ASPH lens, and will have a white leather strap and a white case for the lens. Only 350 white kits will be made, and Leica says each will have a serial number unique to the White edition.
The Leica M10-P White kits are available now and retail for £12,750. The US$ price has yet to be revealed.

Leaked photos, specs allegedly reveal Leica’s upcoming SL2 mirrorless camera

Nokishita has shared images and specifications for a new Leica camera it claims is the SL2.

According to the report, the new camera (codenamed Vader) will feature a 47-megapixel CMOS sensor and feature 4K video recording with a new ‘Cine Mode.’ The report also notes the camera will have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and be compatible with Leica’s mobile app, FOTOS.

Based on the images, the front of the camera remains largely unchanged from the original Leica SL (Typ 601) with the exception of the viewfinder bump and edges around the grip, both of which have been rounded off compared to the sharper design of the original SL. The rear of the camera stays the same up top, but swaps the unlabeled buttons on both sides of the camera for a row of three buttons on the left-hand side of the rear display: a play, function and menu button.

There’s no additional information on pricing, but Nokishita points at a September release with a note that the camera could be pushed back to later in the year pending other factors.
