You Gotta Be Leaf: 12 Smokin’ Hot Marijuana Mascots

01 May

[ By Steve in Design & Guerilla Ads & Marketing. ]

Marijuana is smokin’ hot and an herb’n helping of marijuana mascots have helped add leaf, er, life to a host of marches, rallies and events.

Marijuana’s gradual transition from an illegal, subversive hobby to a legal, taxable commodity is neither quick nor easy. Proponents of the psychedelic herb have resorted to traditional methods of getting their point across, and mascots take front row center when it comes to getting attention to the cause. Philadelphia-based “Hempy” is a typical marijuana mascot that plays on the wacky weed’s most obvious attributes: he’s green, leafy and makes you smile.

Being a marijuana mascot ain’t all it’s cracked up to be, however. Hempy’s looking decidedly red-eyed and wasted at the November 2015 march for Delaware NORML. Get that dude some Doritos, stat!

Bongman

Yikes! “Bongman” may not be green but something about him will make you FEEL green… and we don’t have to tell you what that something is, hmm?

Appearing at the 420 Smoke Out in downtown Toronto on April 20th of 2011, Bongman was spotted leaving the event behind the wheel of a white van with “FREE CANDY” scrawled on the sides – at least that’s our guess. Canada is set to legalize the recreational use of marijuana on July 1st of 2018, so maybe Bongman did more than make everyone feel uncomfortable and harsh their buzz.

Potsquatch

Bumble Snowman’s got nuthin’ on Potsquatch – just ask Jennifer Pagliei (below) of WWLP-22 News, who was video-bombed by the shambling weed mascot while reporting live in a Springfield, MA blizzard on February 9th of 2017.

When he’s not crashing newscasts, Potsquatch can be found at POTCO – a marijuana growing supplies store described by owner Dave Mech as a “Costco for marijuana” Welcome to POTCO – we love you, man.

Horny Goatweed?

This capped & shaded stuffed goat is the unofficial mascot of EAZE, a San Francisco-based medical marijuana delivery service backed by Snoop Dogg, among others. No one at EAZE knows the goat’s name, how it got to be the company mascot, or even how it ended up in the front lobby… yeah, sounds like your typical weed-biz startup. Word to staffers: goats eat weeds so keep an eye on your stock.

On Assignment: Leaf and a Dish

22 Mar

As photographers, we often have to do outdoor portraits. And if we are lighting, that means hauling a lot of gear, fighting a lot of sun and dealing with the wind. But lately I've been working to pare the gear pack down to something that is reasonable in terms of cost, size and weight.

The photo above is a good example of what can be done with a minimal amount of well-chosen gear. With a little advance thought, you can overpower the sun, have good mobility and not have to worry about the wind.

11 September, 2014 – Upgrading To The Leaf Credo 80

11 Sep

This is date I hope many of us take a moment to reflect on as it is the anniversary of 9/11.  This was a most tragic day and one I’ll never forget.  Please remember those that have fallen and those that serve.  I have two sons in the military (Navy and Army) as well as a daughter in law serving in the Army.  Like all their brothers in arms they serve with dedication so we can live the lives we do.  I am very proud of them. Also, don’t forget all of those victims of that day, and those that served and have not come home.  Let’s hope we can get through the challenges ahead.  As the FDNY says "Never Forget"

Continuing with our articles on Medium Format we share a story by Robb Williamson today, Upgrading To The Leaf Credo 80.  Not only is Robb a great photographer, but he is a detailed writer.  He shares with us his decision and process of making an upgrade to the Leaf Credo 80.  He also gives good insight into using technical cameras with medium format digital backs.

Michael and Kevin leave for Cologne, Germany on Sunday and they will be covering Photokina.  This is the largest photo show in the world and happens only every other year.  Unlike in the past when most manufacturers actually announced products at the show, mostly everything that is new has already been announced.  As usual though, there will be surprises.  Michael and Kevin have a number of interviews set-up with some of the big wigs of the industry.  They will be making regular and daily reports on what they see and hear.  So, check in regularly next week to keep up on the latest.

LuLa also has a number of soon to be released videos as well as a large number of interesting articles and reviews.  We’ll be working hard during the next few months to give you more content and informative articles as well as announcing some new workshops for the next two years.  Plus we’ll have a few surprises too.

Leaf Shutter + ND + Flash: A Fuji X100s Daylight Primer

01 May

Right about now I feel like Alice in Wonderland, holding the "drink me" cup. Having a leaf shutter, a built-in 3-stop neutral density filter and a real chip in a compact camera is opening up a whole new world of possibilities.

But with these possibilities come some quirks, some compromises and a few technical things to be mindful of. What you need to know about leaf-shutter compacts and daylight flash, below.
