Curated film subscription service launched by Analogue Wonderland

Online film retailer Analogue Wonderland has started a new curated film subscription service for those who enjoy trying different emulsions. The Analogue Wonderbox service promises to deliver six different 35mm films every two months so subscribers can expand their experience of unusual as well as regular emulsion types and brands.

Covering both color and black and white rolls, the service will offer negative and positive films, and users can expect extra goodies in the packages including offers on processing, merchandise and other free gifts. The idea of the service is to introduce film photographers to different emulsions but particularly to give those new to film, and those coming back to it, a taste of what is available.

The company says each week subscribers will be sent information on one of the films, with an explanation of what to expect from it as well as hints on getting the most from it. All subscribers will get the same films each time so they can discuss their results and post examples of their work. Each month the company will hold a competition for pictures shot on one of the films in the subscription pack.

Analogue Wonderland says that although some films will be cheaper than others the total value of each pack will add up to, or exceed, the cost of the service, and that the goodies, learning and community will make it even better value. There are over 100 films to get through, with a wide range of looks to be explored.

The subscription costs £50 (approx. $ 65) every two months, with shipping included for those in the UK. Shipping to Europe and the USA costs £12 (approx. $ 15). For more information see the Analogue Wonderland website.

Report: Air Force One nearly collided with a drone, investigation launched

On Sunday night passengers aboard Air Force One (AF1) spotted a small object, resembling a drone, flying in close proximity to the right of the plane as it was making its final descent. President Trump, First Lady Melania, and their son Barron were all on board. The modified Boeing 757 landed without incident at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland but White House military officials have opened an investigation into the sighting.

Described by witnesses as yellow and black, and shaped like a cross, the unmanned aerial vehicle nearly collided with AF1 as it was making its final descent. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which receives thousands of reports, annually, regarding drones operating in restricted areas and close to manned aircraft, referred questions on this particular incident to the U.S. Air Force. It’s 89th Airlift Wing along with the White House Military Office stated they were ‘aware of the report’ and the ‘matter was under review,’ according to Bloomberg.

Most civilian drones weigh only a few pounds and aren’t capable of taking down an airliner. However, government research reveals that a similarly-sized bird is could potentially destroy a jet airliner’s engine or shatter its windshield. The FAA does not permit flight above 400 feet unless a remote pilot has obtained their Part 107 certification (in the U.S., similar laws apply in most other countries) or has acquired a special waiver.

As we reported back in December 2019, over 1.5 million drones have been registered in the U.S. and 8,700 incidents of unmanned aircraft flying too close to planes have been reported to the FAA. Of those reports, two collisions between a drone with a helicopter and a hot air balloon have been confirmed by the National Transportation Safety Board. Remote ID, the concept that all drones need a digital license plate, took comments from the public through March of this year.

‘Remote ID technologies will enhance safety and security by allowing the FAA, law enforcement, and federal security agencies to identify drones flying in their jurisdiction,’ said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao. The rulemaking is currently in development and is expected to be finalized by the end of this year.

Rumor: The Olympus E-M5 III to be launched October 17th, use same 20MP sensor as E-M1 II

According to the most recent report from 4/3 Rumors, Olympus’ next camera, presumed to be the E-M5 III, will be announced on October 17, 2019, and feature the same 20-megapixel sensor that’s inside the E-M1 II.

In its report, 4/3 Rumors breaks down the summary of the rumored information it’s received thus far saying with ’99 percent’ certainty that the announcement will be made on October 17, 2019, and with ’80 percent’ certainty, the new camera will feature the same 20MP 121 cross-type phase-detection sensor as the E-M1 II.

The report also states with ’90 percent’ certainty the new camera will come with a new processor that should, in theory, result in better image quality despite using the same sensor. Other details in the report say with ’60 percent’ certainty that the camera will have a ‘lighter, more plasticky but still weather-sealed body’ and use the same BLS-50 battery also used by the Olympus PEN and E-M10 cameras.

If this information does end up holding true, the E-M5 III is shaping up to be an incremental improvement rather than a revolutionary advancement.


Update (September 23, 2019): Corrected to reflect the 20MP sensor the rumored E-M5 III will be based on is in fact the E-M1 II, not the E-M5 II.

Magicbooster Pro launched for 6K Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to emulate full frame sensor

LucAdapters has launched a crowd funding campaign to develop a focal reducer for the newly announced Super 35mm 6K cinema camera from Blackmagic Design. The reducer will allow users to mount full frame lenses on the camera with only a slight crop, thus emulating the look of a camera with a full frame sensor.

The company has history with this kind of adapter and currently makes a reducer for the Ursa Mini called Magicbooster Pro, and has in the past made a full-frame adapter for the Samsung NX1. This new model will be called Magicbooster Pocket 6K and will combine the benefits of a 1 stop increase in effective aperture as well as decreasing the crop factor of the 6K area of the camera’s Super 35mm sensor from 1.5x to 1.1x. This allows full frame lenses to practically maintain their intended angle of view when recording 6K footage, with a 50mm lens acting like a 55mm with the reducer instead of like a 75mm without it.

The Magicbooster Pocket 6K will be fully compatible with all of Canon’s EF lenses according to LucAdapters, but not EF-S models. The Magicbooster fits inside the camera’s throat leaving the mount untouched, and replaces some internal parts of the camera itself in doing so. The unit comprises a small barrel with lens elements at the end. It screws into the camera with the magnifying lens sitting directly in front of the camera’s sensor and behind the IR filter.

Buyers will receive a replacement UV-IR cut filter that the company claims is better than that which is shipped with the camera. Such a degree of installation is required that it isn’t the sort of adapter that can be attached and unattached in a couple of seconds, but it also means there’s no need to add and remove the adapter every time you have to change a lens.

10 years ago today, Nikon launched the S1000pj, a compact camera with a built-in projector

Ten years ago today Nikon unveiled a handful of cameras including the CoolPix S1000pj, a compact camera with a built-in projector capable of projecting a 40-inch screen.

Who didn’t relive family camping trips on the glorious 40-inch screen the S1000pj was able to project on your family room’s wall (which just happens to be devoid of a television despite having a couch face the wall)?

Aside from the built-in projector, the S1000pj featured a 12.1-megapixel sensor, a 5x wide-angle Zoom-Nikkor lens (28-140mm full-frame equivalent), an ISO range of 64-6400, 5-way VR Image Stabilization System, Subject Tracking and a 2.7-inch wide-angle LCD display on the rear. Nikon’s MSRP was $ 429.95 when it was eventually released a month after its announcement in September 2009. Below is a video presentation from Nikon France showing the S1000pj in action:

The CoolPix S1000pj still has its own product page on B&H, but as you might suspect, it’s listed as ‘No Longer Available.’ It’s also one of the cameras we previously featured in our 2013 article titled ‘Ten one-of-a-kind cameras from the 21st century.’

Video: Cinema5D shares more exclusive BTS video of the Fujifilm GFX 100 being built, launched

Earlier this month, we shared with you the first part of Cinema5D’s two-part documentary that shares a behind-the-scenes look at how Fujifilm is bringing its medium-format GFX 100 mirrorless camera to life. Now, Cinema5D has dropped part two, which further dives into the intricacies of creating, testing and launching the world’s first 100-megapixel mirrorless camera.

The 12-minute video shares exclusive footage of how Fujifilm meticulously pieces together GFX 100 units inside its Taiwa, Japan factory, which was opened in September 2018 and designed specifically for the creation of Fujifilm GFX and X-series cameras and lenses. The video also shares a collection of footage captured with a pre-production model of the GFX 100 and takes a behind-the-scenes look at what it took to get the official launch presentation in order.

Capture One Studio launched to add automation for high volume studios

Phase One has launched a new version of its Capture One image editing software application that is designed to assist workflow processes in busy studio environments. Capture One Studio allows central control for operations that use multiple photographers shooting high volumes of images that need to be edited and catalogued as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The application is highly customizable, and allows certain tools to be locked off and others to be set up to be consistent across the whole studio. New automatic processes can color-correct, name images, store them and send them for back-up as they leave a tethered camera, while scripts can be created to determine processing paths and issues such as sizing, cropping and output destinations.

Businesses will be able to create on-screen guide lines and grid lines to ensure compositions suit specific layouts which can be shared to all photographers and which can be exported and used in Adobe’s Photoshop as well. Capture Pilot will also be able to display these custom guides and grids so composition can be checked remotely on a tablet or smartphone.

RAW Power 2.0 for Mac and iOS launched with batch editing, new adjustment tools, Dark Mode

A year ago, Nik Bhatt, founder of Gentlemen Coders and a former lead developer for Apple’s Aperture and iPhoto team, released RAW Power, an iOS-based Raw photo editor. Today, a year after its initial launch, RAW Power 2.0 has been released and with it comes updated adjustment tools, batch editing, and more.

RAW Power for Mac 2.0

RAW Power for Mac 2.0 operates as both a standalone app, as well as an extension for Apple Photos. The updated version brings new adjustment tools including chromatic aberration correction, perspective correction, a black and white mode, a vignette tool, and a new enhance module.

Batch processing has also been adding. Now, users can apply filters and adjustments in bulk and copy edits from one photo to another. A new custom naming tool has been added for better organization upon exporting photos.

RAW Power for Mac 2.0 has also received a few UI tweaks. It now includes a full file browser, multiple window and tab support, a thumbnail grid view, Quick Look support, improved metadata information, and a new dark look to go along with maxO Mojave’s Dark Mode.

RAW Power for Mac 2.0 works with macOS High Sierra and Mojave. It retails for $ 29.99 as a one-time purchase, but Gentleman Coders is currently offering it for $ 26.99 throughout the month of November. Version 2.0 is a free update for existing RAW Power for Mac 1.0 users.

RAW Power for iOS 2.0

RAW Power for iOS 2.0 claims to be ‘the first app to combine Raw image editing with seamless iOS and iCloud library integration.’ Like its macOS counterpart, this update brings along the same new adjustment tools (some of which are hidden behind a $ 1.99 in-app purchase) including chromatic aberration correction, perspective correction, a black and white mode, a vignette tool, and a new enhance module. Gentleman Coders says these adjustments are 100 percent compatible with the macOS version and will sync through iCloud Photo Library if you have it enabled.

Batch processing is also present in the iOS version. Users can now ‘apply presets, paste adjustments, revert to original, and generate JPEG previews for [Raw photos] for multiple images at a time.’ The UI has also been updated across the board, including a customizable adjustment panel and a new option to share and export directly to the Photos app in various formats.

RAW Power for iOS 2.0 is available for $ 2.99 in the iOS App Store with two optional in-app purchases for $ 1.99: Advanced Adjustment Pack 1 and 2. Advanced Adjustment Pack 1 includes Depth Effect, Curves, and white balance adjustments. Advanced Adjustment Pack 2, a new pack for version 2.0 of the app, includes chromatic aberration, vignette, perspective, and black and white adjustments.

RAW Power for iOS 2.0 supports iOS 11 and 12 and ‘does not support iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus, or iPad mini 3 or earlier.’

Kodak Daylight Single Use disposable camera launched in Europe

Kodak Alaris has launched a new single-use disposable camera in Europe. Called the Kodak Daylight Single Use Camera, this 800 ISO film camera can be used in low and high outdoor lighting conditions, according to the company, which bills it as an item ideal for parties, weddings, and similar events.

The Kodak Daylight Single Use Camera has a one meter to infinity focal length and 39 total exposures; however, it’s worth noting that this camera does not have a flash. The company announced the camera for the European market, and it appears to be available now from Amazon UK for £7.79. It’s unclear whether the company will launch the Daylight Single Use model in other markets.

The Canon EOS 4000D might be the cheapest DSLR ever launched

Canon Europe has launched the EOS 4000D, a still more cut-down version of the EOS 2000D/T7 announced earlier today. The entry-level model will launch for around £330/€380 body only, which would equate to somewhere around $ 385 without tax. That’s the lowest launch price of any DSLR we can remember.

Canon’s four-digit-D series cameras, from the 1000D (Rebel XS) onwards, have always hit aggressive price points in the market by recycling existing components and features—we called the original 1000D a “reheated” 400D/Rebel XT at the time. But the EOS 4000D takes this to a new level.

The 4000D shares its body and viewfinder with its more expensive sibling (and previous cameras of this series), but relies on a version of the 18MP sensor first introduced nine years ago in the EOS 7D, and the Digic 4+ processor that made its debut in Canon’s 2014 model-year compacts. The camera’s rear display is a 2.7-inch LCD that we last encountered in 2011’s EOS 1100D/Rebel T3.

Finally, some kits of the camera will include the unstabilized 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 III first announced in February of 2011, although we’re pretty sure the plastic lens mount is a first for a digital EOS.

That’s not to say that Canon has just launched a DSLR from five years ago’s parts bin. Although it loses the NFC feature of the 2000D, it does retain Wi-Fi connectivity. This feature, a more modern version of Canon’s Auto modes, and its much-loved JPEG engine means the EOS 4000D is likely to be a pretty credible super-budget DSLR.

Still, we’ve not seen such aggressive corner cutting unit cost optimization since Sony’s a3000 (which was seemingly made from upcycled yogurt containers), and can’t think of a DSLR that has ever launched at a lower price.

London, UK, 26th February 2018 – Canon Europe today unveils the launch of the EOS 2000D and EOS 4000D, Canon’s latest entry-level DSLR cameras. With a wide range of practical and easy to use features, these new cameras cater to the storytelling needs of individuals taking their first steps into interchangeable lens photography and those wanting to create superbly detailed DSLR quality pictures and cinematic Full HD movies with ease.

The newest additions to Canon’s entry-level DSLR range, the EOS 2000D and EOS 4000D have been designed for people who seek out new experiences and want to share their adventures seamlessly to social media. The cameras’ powerful combination of APS-C sensor technology, DIGIC 4+ image processor, seamless Wi-Fi connectivity and straightforward in-camera feature guides enable stories to be captured and shared with highly detailed photos and Full HD movies.

With the EOS 2000D featuring a new 24.1 Megapixel APS-C sensor, and the EOS 4000D using an 18 Megapixel APS-C sensor, each camera allows for compelling storytelling with superb control over depth of field for beautifully blurred image backgrounds. Shooting rich, atmospheric photos during night-time adventures is also made possible with both models capable of low light shooting up to ISO 6400, expandable to ISO 12800.

The DIGIC 4+ image processor, used in both models, powers Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto mode, enabling simple point and shoot photography with superb image results, as it automatically optimises every shot. The fast and responsive DIGIC 4+ image processor enables the Full HD video capabilities in both models, breathing cinematic life into captured memories.

In addition to a rear mounted LCD screen (7.5 cm on the EOS 2000D and 6.8 cm on the EOS 4000D), both cameras feature a centrally mounted optical viewfinder, providing a distinctly authentic photography experience and allowing stories to be told just as they were experienced with the naked eye. Decisive moments in unfolding stories can be captured with responsive and precise nine point auto focus and continuous shooting at 3.0 frames per second.

Both cameras are Wi-Fi enabled for seamless smartphone connectivity via the Canon Camera Connect app (iOS and Android), enabling adventurers to rapidly shoot and share their content on social media whilst on the move. New images can be conveniently backed up to Canon’s cloud storage service, irista, via a Wi-Fi connection, ensuring stories and memories shared are never lost.

These processes are made even easier for the EOS 2000D with the inclusion of Near Field Communication (NFC), which can establish a Wi-Fi connection to a smartphone by simply tapping the device on the camera (available on compatible Android devices).

Both models include simple in-camera feature guides, perfect for those looking to improve their storytelling potential as they upgrade from a smartphone. Both cameras include six image settings outside of basic auto modes and a variety of creative filters, enabling experimentation with manual control and the artistic freedom to tell dynamic and vibrant stories. Those embarking on their first DSLR adventure will also benefit from the Canon Photo Companion app, which provides the necessary tips on getting the best out of the cameras.

The EOS 2000D and EOS 4000D’s excellent battery life delivers approximately 500 pictures, or one hour 30 minutes and one hour 15 minutes of HD video respectively, allowing for peace of mind during extended outdoor adventures and the freedom to explore.

Both DSLR models are compatible with over 80 Canon EF and EF-S lenses and range of accessories, giving beginners the greatest choice of systems as they grow and develop their photography skills. The new cameras will be sold as a body only option or with a selection of lens kit options, including an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens.
