SanDisk unveils world’s largest microSDXC card with 400GB capacity

As long as your device features a microSD-slot, there are now no excuses for running out of storage. Today, Western Digital introduced what is currently the largest capacity microSD memory card in the world: the SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card with a whopping 400GB of storage space.

Western Digital has managed to double the capacity of its current high-end models by leveraging its proprietary memory technology, design and production processes, allowing the die to store even more data in an unchanged form factor.

The company says users will be able to transfer files with 100 MB/s speed—which equals approximately 1,200 photos per minute—or fill the card with up to 40 hours of video in Full-HD resolution. The SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I comes with a 10-year warranty and is available now in Europe for 250 Euros (approximately $ 295). No information on US-pricing has been released yet.

World’s Largest Bicycle Parking Garage Stores Over 6,000 Rides in the Netherlands

The Netherlands, where bikes outnumber citizens, is well known for its cycle-centric transportation infrastructure. In Utrecht, over 100,000 cyclists ride through the city every day, connecting between home, school, work and public transportation. Now open, this newly-built bicycle parking lot can already house 6,000 rides at a time, but is aiming to more than double that capacity by the end of the year.

It actually looks a lot like a conventional parking lot, filled with ramps and arrows pointing cyclists through the structure, crisscrossed with walking paths for people traveling to and from their personal vehicle. Dense stacking allows for layered storage across the multiple levels of the structure.

Eventually, the parking structure will store a remarkable 33,000 bicycles by 2020, which, to most people, might sound like a lot of bikes. But the design, patterned after Tokyo’s amazing underground bike parking station, has people worried — not because it could be overbuilt, but because the capacity might not match the demand.

As popular as cycling already is in the region, the number of people on bikes continues to grow and the Netherlands has long had storage space issues related to this growth. One cycling organization quoted John Lennon to make the point: “life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.” They say politicians are still being too slow to make decisions and implement plans to increase bike-supporting infrastructure. Still, too many riders and fewer seems like a good problem for a city to have.

Italian Nikon distributor sets world record for largest human camera

Nikon is keeping the 100th anniversary party going with a new one-of-a-kind feat: assembling the world’s largest ‘human camera’. Italian distributor Nital and Media Italia put on the event, and over a thousand volunteers answered the call to don black, grey, white and red t-shirts. On June 17th, the human camera components were assembled into the unmistakable shape of a Nikon DSLR.

In case there was any doubt, a judge from the Guinness World Records was on hand to declare that it was indeed the largest human camera ever created. In any case, it seems like about a thousand people had a decent time and got a free t-shirt and hat out of the deal.

World’s Largest “Car Vending Machine” Dispenses Real Bentleys & Ferraris

Combining architecture, advertising and technology, this car dealership lets users punch in numbers to bring their vehicle of choice down a 15-story showroom looming above in full view. The tall lit-up facade of Autobahn Motors acts as a billboard and show space, letting fans scope out a Lamborghini from a distance then take it out for a test drive on the streets below.

The design responds in part to the lack of surface real estate in this space-crunched island city-state, but it also serves as great marketing for the business. While not the first such automobile-vending tower in the world, it is the largest, and it works quickly: a user-selected vehicle can be brought down in just two minutes from the floors far above. Given land scarcity in cities, this unusual-looking typology makes a lot of sense, and could start to spring up in other places as well.

Meanwhile, for those in the United States: Carvana has smaller versions located in Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee. These are less a response to density issues and more driven by marketing and novelty.

And while the towers aren’t quite as tall the effect is still pretty neat – modular platforms provide vehicles on demand from an array of sports cars, hatchbacks, minivans and trucks.

As a bonus for fans of quirky interactivity: their system operates even more like a vending machine – users are given a giant coin to insert, which lets them bring down the vehicle of their choice from the display racks above.

Pillars of Green: 85,000 Plants on World’s Largest Vertical Garden Facade

An extensive living facade system in Bogota, Columbia, represents growth in the right direction, away from unrealistic tree-covered skyscrapers toward more sustainable and useful vertical greenery.

The Santalaia building has plants spanning over 30,000 square meters of its surface area, able to produce oxygen for over 3,000 people annually (and filter tons of heavy metals, harmful gases and other airborne particulates). Paisajismo Urbano installed this specific system, developed by Ignacio Solano.

The recent trend (in renderings and to some extent reality) of putting trees onto tall towers is problematic from engineering and ecological standpoints. “Intensive” greenery requires thicker layers of soil and more complex systems for watering, maintenance and structural support. “Extensive” greenery, by contrast, provides many of the same benefits with lower cost and less wasted energy.

Many architects are naturally tempted to place trees on buildings, which do have a few functional advantages (like providing shade and making for nice-looking renderings). Still, building residents as well as the public would be better served in most cases by systems like this one. Even then, it is important to determine in advance what the goals and intended benefits are, since any green installation is complex and requires ongoing support.

KitSplit acquires CameraLends, becomes largest peer-to-peer camera rental platform

Peer-to-peer camera equipment rental platform KitSplit has acquired its rival CameraLends to form the world’s largest peer-to-peer gear rental community. The combined entity will be managed under the KitSplit brand from headquarters in New York and CameraLends founder Adam Derewecki will join KitSplit as an advisor.

“There are more content creators today than ever before and they all need access to top quality, affordable gear. Since launching a little over a year ago, KitSplit has made huge improvements in gear rentals, making creative work and connecting with creators even easier and more affordable. The CameraLends acquisition will further our goals of democratizing access to great gear and empowering creators,” says KitSplit cofounder and CEO Lisbeth Kaufman.

CameraLends user accounts including gear information have already been integrated into the Kitsplit web platform to smooth the transition for existing CameraLends users. In addition to individuals, KitSplit also works with rental houses and production companies to expand its gear pool. More information is available on the KitSplit website.

Seagate 5TB Backup Plus Portable is ‘world’s largest capacity’ mobile storage drive

Seagate has introduced the 5TB Backup Plus Portable, calling it the world’s largest capacity portable external storage drive. The Backup Plus Portable features the BarraCuda 5TB internal drive in a 20.5mm-thick aluminum case; it supports both macOS (with an NTFS driver) and Windows with USB 3.0 connectivity.

Seagate announced the BarraCuda internal hard drive last month, and lists the 5TB model with data transfer speeds up to 140MB/s. At this capacity, the drive can store up to 600 hours of HD video, according to Seagate. The new Backup Plus offering will be available later this month in red, black, blue, and silver color options for $ 190.

Largest Mural in Paris: 15,000 Origami Birds Adorn Condemned Building

Lunar Cycles is a massive site-specific installation featuring 15,000 paper-crafted birds in the 13th arrondissement of France’s capital city, requiring (non-paper) cranes to hang the elaborate avian collage.

Created by French street artist Mademoiselle Maurice in collaboration with Mathgoth Gallery, the work represents the biggest mural Paris has ever seen, a massive flight of birds landing on a 20,000-square-foot wall.

The artwork was installed on a condemned building, allowing the artist to first apply a layer of black paint as a backdrop for the colorful array of geometric paper birds added to the wall. She also painted on a series of two-dimensional origamic patterns to bridge between the physical papers and flat surface.

The artist notes that the neighborhood contributed to the design, including those most impacted but the upcoming demolition of this long-standing structural pillar of the community. Previous projects from Maurice have featured similar themes in other settings, from birds and other geometric origami shapes gracing the walls of city streets and ancient castles alike. This work will be up through August.

Think Tank Photo launches largest rolling case for lighting

Bag manufacturer Think Tank Photo has introduced a rolling case for lighting kit that it claims is the largest on the market. The Production Manager 50 is designed to hold a pair of studio-style heads with power packs, battery packs, dishes, umbrellas and even lighting stands. The case has internal dimensions of 38 x 125 x 25.4cm / 15.5 x 49.2 x 10in and comes with a collection of adjustable dividers so users can customize the layout of the interior. Zip-up pockets on the inside of the lid are designed to keep cables tidy, and straps on the exterior can be used to attach tripods and larger lighting stands.

The bag is made with ballistic nylon coated with a water-repellent agent that covers a rigid shell, and the shock-absorbing wheels are user replaceable should they get damaged. Think Tank Photo says that the idea of this big case is to make it easier for photographers to transport large amounts of kit in one load, and claims the Production Manager 50 can carry what it would normally require two assistants to manage.

Volcanic Architecture: World’s Largest 3D-Printed Structure

Inspired by the complex organic shape of a volcanic eruption, this 1,086-piece pavilion in Beijing has just been awarded a Guinness Book of World Records distinction for the largest 3D-printed structure in the world.

Created by the Laboratory for Creative Design, the VULCAN stands nearly 10 feet tall and spans 24 feet across, named after the Latin name for the Roman god of fire.

Its robust geometric components reference the divine, while a fragile web of cocoon-inspired interconnections between panels are inspired by man.

Human-scaled arches overhang an open space below, formed by three ramping forms flanking each entry and rising up from fragile points of floor contact.

Th endeavor took 30 days and 20 large-scale 3D printers to complete, then 15 people for 12 days to assemble the pieces on site into the whole pavilion.
