DxOMark splits from DxO Labs, is now an independent privately-owned company

11 Jan

In an email distributed late last month, DxOMark Image Labs announced that it has been spun-off from DxO Labs. DxOMark now exists as its own privately-owned independent company, which will continue to “pursue the development and commercialization of image quality solutions and services.”

DxO Labs, meanwhile, continues to develop its photo editing software, DxO PhotoLab, as well as the DxO One smartphone camera attachment. We’ll also keep a close eye on what DxO plans to do with the Nik Software Collection, which it recently acquired from Google and promises to update in early 2018.

The business change happened back in September, according to the email, which didn’t go into further detail about the matter. The full note reads:

We’ve had an important internal change as well: In September, DxOMark Image Labs was spun off from DxO Labs. DxOMark Image Labs is now a privately-owned, independent company. As such, we continue to pursue the development and commercialization of image quality solutions and services that support our customers in designing the best-quality camera systems for a range of markets, including smartphones, DSC/DSLRs, drones, action cams, surveillance, and automotive.

Tooth Or Consequences: 15 Dodgy Dental Labs

24 Jul

[ By Steve in Architecture & Offices & Commercial. ]

Come up to the dental lab, and see what’s on the dental slab: these dental labs will definitely leave you shivering, tho’ NOT with antici… pation.

Looking for tomorrow’s dentures today? Then get your bleeding gums down to 2919 Mack Avenue in Detroit’s once-beautiful Poletown East neighborhood, where you’ll find Denture Work Of The Future!

Situated in an almost-windowless whitewashed concrete block building that would make an awesome anti-zombie fortress, this oddly-named “customized” dental lab featured equally odd exterior artwork highlighted by a truly frightening set of choppers – one would hope they didn’t represent examples of their work. Sometime before 2010 the building was repainted, possibly by the same “artist” though their illustrative skills show some improvement.

Motormouth City

While “Denture Work Of The Future” seems to be a going concern, the ink’s a whole lot redder over at the Detroit Dental Lab.

Kudos to City-Data.com and Andy from Hot Fudge Detroit for the photos above, the second of which is slightly more recent (judging from the blown-out second story windows), dating from February of 2008.

N-ter At Own Risk

Dental Laboratories – where crowns, bridges and other such dental prosthetics are crafted by dental technicians – enjoy a sort of regulatory limbo where certification is voluntary. Even the lowest level of certification (CDL, or Certified Dental Laboratory) is achieved merely by submitting photos of the facility for third-party review! Yeah, so, next time your dentist recommends you get a crown, ask him if the lab they use is certified and to what degree. Otherwise, your shiny new faux-molar might just hail from the dyslexic (if not dysfunctional) dental lab above, snapped by Flickr member Duncan in July of 2012.

Abbey Normal

The British have been knocked over the state of their teeth and we may have found the reason: the state of their dental laboratories. Take the slightly ominous establishment above, Abbey Dental, captured by Flickr member Johnny Wilson (johnnytakespictures) in August of 2013. Located in the  Warwickshire town of Nuneaton (perfect location for a dentist, amiright?), Abbey Dental boasts of having “over 40 years experience” though if one judges by appearances it’s more like 400 years.

Meat Me In Medellin

A dental lab occupying space above a butcher shop? Seems legit… and that’s just how they roll in Medellin, Colombia. Bonus points awarded for the nifty folk-art illustrations of toothy mouths above and tasty beasts below. It’s the South American version of “business up front, party in the back.”

Alpine Labs’ Spark 3-in-1 camera trigger seeks funding on Kickstarter

17 Apr

Alpine Labs, the company behind the Pulse camera remote, is back on Kickstarter with a more powerful and versatile triggering device. The Spark camera remote allows for triggering your camera in three ways: you can either use it as an infrared wireless remote, control, plug it into your camera with a cable and use it as a wired remote, or connect it to your smartphone and a dedicated app via Bluetooth to unlock a variety of creative trigger options.

The app offers customizable settings and lets you shoot timelapses, HDR brackets and long exposures and can trigger up to three cameras at once. Using the infrared connection you can trigger single shots or capture time lapses at one-second intervals by holding-down the shutter button.

The cable connection offers more reliability and doesn’t require line of sight to your camera’s infrared sensor. According to Alpine Labs the button battery will work for over 2,000 hours of use. In addition the device works with a large number of cameras. The Spark Kickstarter campaign will be running until May 20. Until then you can reserve a Spark device for $ 44 which is 25 percent off the envisaged future retail price.

4 September, 2013 – Kenyon Labs Gyro Stabilizer

04 Sep

There are situations where even the best in-lens or body stabilization isn’t enough. What to use? In today’s featured review Neal Ratoul explains the Kenyon Labs Gyro Stabilizer.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott

Bell Labs creates lensless single-pixel camera

05 Jun

lensless2.jpg

Scientists at Bell Labs have built a prototype camera that uses no lens and a single-pixel sensor. This idea is based around a grid of small apertures that each direct light rays from different parts of the scene to the sensor, and can be opened and closed independently. The sensor makes a series of measurements with different combinations of open apertures, and uses this data to reconstruct the scene in front of the camera. No lens to focus the resultant image means infinite depth of field and low cost. Click through for more details and a link to the original research.
